• Legal concern over "borrowed" code

  A company my friend works for (let's call him Me) recently unveiled a new face for their internal "networking" website. This new face looks remarkably like Facebook, and indeed, examination of the source code reveals that it's almost identical: The code, class names, and even the fonts are the same. There is also no indication that Facebook is in any way involved or aware. I know this is unethical, but is it illegal? I can't find anything concrete about this to help Me decide what to do about it. EDIT: We're talking front-end code. It does not appear to be linking to Facebook in any way.

• Size limit while using UICollectionView as tiled map for iOS game?

  I'm working on a turn-based strategy game for iOS, (picture Civilization 2 as a template example), and I'm considering using a UICollectionView as my game map. Each cell would be a tile, and I could use the "didSelectCell" method to handle player interaction with each tile. Here's my question: I know that UICollectionViewCells are dequeued and reused by the OS, so does that mean that the map could support an effectively infinitely-large map, so long as only a few cells are onscreen at a time? However many cells were onscreen would be held in memory, and obviously the data source would take up some memory, but would my offscreen map be limited to a certain size or could it be enormous so long as the number of cells visible at any one time wasn't too much for the device to handle? Basically, is there any memory weight to offscreen cells, or do only visible cells have any impact? Also, does a UICollectionView seem like a bad idea for a game map, in a way I haven't thought of yet? It seems like it work well, but I haven't tried it yet so any thoughts are welcome.

• How can one manage thousands of IF...THEN...ELSE rules?

  I am considering building an application, which, at its core, would consist of thousands of if...then...else statements. The purpose of the application is to be able to predict how cows move around in any landscape. They are affected by things like the sun, wind, food source, sudden events etc. How can such an application be managed? I imagine that after a few hundred IF-statements, it would be as good as unpredictable how the program would react and debugging what lead to a certain reaction would mean that one would have to traverse the whole IF-statement tree every time. I have read a bit about rules engines, but I do not see how they would get around this complexity.

• Remapping Shift Selection in Gnome Terminal

  Hey so I was hoping somebody could help me out in finding a way to get shift-selection working in gnome-terminal on Ubuntu 11.10. I found the question/bug report below but neither seem to have a solution. I use Emacs for development and being able to select my current line with shift-ctrl-a/e is something I find myself trying to do every couple of minutes. I use 10.04 at work and this is possible so I am not sure what has changed. If it matters I am using Gnome 3 Shell and I use bashish to style my terminal.   With Jason Lee's NetBake plugin (https://bitbucket.org/jdlee/netbake), when you've installed JRuby and then the Asciidoctor gem, you're good to go to use Asciidoctor with NetBeans IDE. New Asciidoc files can be created, which have a Source view... ...and a Visual view. The current content of the text editor is parsed by the Asciidoctor gem and the resulting HTML is displayed in a JEditorPane: Awestruct support is also part of the NetBake plugin, with a new project type and other related features. An Options window is included for configuring the plugin: I've been in touch with Jason and we're discussing separating the Asciidoctor parts from the Awestruct parts and then putting them seperately as plugins on the NetBeans Plugin Portal.

• Configuring Eclipse Xubuntu 12.04

  Just installed Eclipse 3.7.1 on my xubuntu 12.04. I used to have eclipse installed on my 10.04. You could choose new java project, java source files etc. but this version doesn't have these options. If i make a .java file, it's just plane text, no highlighting and no chance to compile. I have installed eclipse-jdt. I looked https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EclipseIDE this manual. It tells to modify /etc/eclipse/java_home file but there is no such file on my system, just eclipse.ini. Am i missing a step here or have i encountered some sort of a bug?

  So I was doing the following: sudo apt-get install php-pear php5-dev sudo apt-get install imagemagick libmagickwand-dev sudo pecl install imagick It all works till I get the error: make: *** [imagick_class.lo] Error 1 ERROR: `make' failed Which according to blog posts and forms is because of libmagick9-dev, how ever when trying to install this I get: sudo apt-get install libmagick9-dev Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package libmagick9-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source However the following packages replace it: graphicsmagick-libmagick-dev-compat E: Package 'libmagick9-dev' has no installation candidate Thoughts?

  We have a website which we want to show adverts in - However, these are custom adverts uploaded by the webmaster, not the Google adverts, or any adverts the network chooses. Ideally, there would be both options. We were considering developing our own advert-management system, but looking at the big picture, it might be better to consider other alternatives. Website is currently developed in C# / ASP.Net (Web Forms) Are there any recommendations to some open-source delivery networks and/or external hosted advert delivery networks? Personally I've used Google's DFP, however sometimes it is not so easy to get a Google AdSense account approved, especially while developing a new website and it not yet being launched. Not sure if this is the best place to ask this kind of question!

• HP Pavilion tx2000 - Wifi adapter no longer works after moving from 12.04 to a 12.10 clean install

  I have a HP Pavilion tx2000 that I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 on for a couple of months without any problems (wifi worked great) until yesterday when my hard drive failed. I replaced the hard drive and decided to install Ubuntu 12.10. Unlike 12.04, the wifi did not work after the installation finished and all the updates where installed (over Ethernet). The network drop down in the top right didn't even show a wireless option. I Googled about for a bit and found some solutions that seemed like they might work. Unfortunately they did not. Here is what I tried: sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer Restart the computer. And the wifi still didn't work. At which point I panicked a bit and tried to undo the previous commands by running: sudo apt-get remove b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-lpphy-installer sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source Restart the computer. The wifi still doesn't work. This is where I stopped because I have no idea what I am doing and don't want to mess something up. The network drop down still doesn't show a wireless option and the hardware wifi switch on the laptop is amber (it turns blue when the wifi is on). Pushing the hardware switch turns the hard block back on and I have to run sudo rfkill unblock all multiple times again to turn it off. Any help is appreciated!   I agree that we should put CRUD methods in a data access layer, However, in my current project I have some issues. It is a legacy system, and there are quite a lot CRUD methods in some concrete manager classes. People including me seem to just add new methods to it, rather than reuse the existing methods. Because We don't know whether the existing method is what we need Even if we have source code, do we really need read other's code then make decision? It is updated too quickly. Do not have time get familiar with the DAO API. Back to the question, how do you solve that in your project? If we say "reuse", it really needs to be reusable rather than just an excuse.

• Audio stopped working suddenly in 12.04

  My audio is no longer working in Xubuntu 12.04 after working fine for about a year. This happened right after visiting the following website and installing an audio browser application to upload voice samples for the creation of an open-source speech recognition program: http://www.voxforge.org/home/read I do not know if that is what caused the problem, but audio stopped working around the same time I installed this web application. When I type in the terminal pulseaudio -D I get the following: E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed. I tried the following next: sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio sudo apt-get install pulseaudio When I type 'pulseaudio' at the command prompt, I get: E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running. E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

• Why are most GNU's software written in C

  I am a Java developer, and I rarely write GUI program in C. However, I noticed that many GNU's projects, such as PSPP, R, Dia, etc., are written in C, instead of Java or C++. I personally don't mind this, but I am really curious why GNU favors C so much. My understanding is that C is the one that supports the least in object-oriented programming, and today's CS education really emphasizes OOP, as OOP really makes codes more reusable. In this case, why would so many developers choose to develop in C instead of C++ or Java. Does anyone know why GNU's software are so exclusively written in C? Do you think or GNU's software should be written in C++ or Java so that the source code could be more useful to people? Why or why not?

• Developing a php system that tracks other websites analytics

  I want to develop a PHP website feature where users sign up, get a javascript snippet code that display an image on their site, and let's me track the number of visitors, unique hits, clicks and average visitor duration on their page. Is that something that should be done with some open source analytic software such as http://piwik.org/ or it's pretty doable on your own? If I had to do it myself from scratch, I would use image/pixel as a way to track the visit, drop a cookie with javascript snippet to track uniques, track clicks based on image click and redirect, and not sure about the bounce rate. Any thoughts or opinions are welcome.

• Compiz antialiasing with xserver-xorg-video-radeon?

  Windows previews are ugly on my computer. Is there any solution to make them smooth? BTW windows previews in Metacity with compositing enabled (/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager) are looking much better than in Compiz. I am using the open source radeon driver, so I can't configure my videocard preferences via AMD's GUI, and I've tried all options like a texture filter, bicubic filter or mipmapping I found in ccsm with no result. How to make windows previews in Compiz be as smooth as they are in Metacity? And sorry, my English sucks just like these windows thumbnails in Compiz.

• Blurry vertical sections using fglrx with Radeon hd 6970

  So I managed to get fglrx working by downloading the drivers from ATI because the ones from additional drivers boot to a black screen and the open source dont let me change resolution. My one issue is that half of my monitor is fine and the other half is blurry almost as if there's a blurry vertical stripe on the right side. I tried disabling Compiz and have the same issue in both gnome and kde, I was wondering if theres an xorg.conf change that could be made to fix this as I have already set the resolution and refresh rates to the correct values.

• What all items can I put on my resume without it looking tacky? [closed]

  I've been searching for work, and so far it's very hard for me to even get a call back. So, I'm looking at adding things to my resume. I know a resume doesn't need to be over 2 pages. I have the basics: Objective/personal info General skills (languages known, etc) Work experience Some things I'm considering adding to it: My college education (though I don't have a degree) Awards given for programming skills in high school (curriculum contests and AP test scores) Open source projects? Would any of these 3 items look tacky? And I only have about 1.5 years of work experience, but I've been programming since I was 13. Is there anything else I can add to my resume that would give me a better chance of getting my foot in the door?
