  • Securing against dynamic linking in .NET

    I want to deploy an application with a license attached. However, I want to prevent that my dll can be easily referenced in visual studio. What are the usual ways of doing this? I was thinking about ngen-ing the application to prevent this, however, then the code becomes architecture dependent. Im not targetting any other architecture/platform besides windows, however, ngen-ing the application after making a release build seems like a workaround to me. Are there any other techniques to achieve this?

    I'm wanting to parse a string into a nullable int in C#. ie. I want to get back either the int value of the string or null if it can't be parsed. I was kind of hoping that this would work int? val = stringVal as int?; But that won't work, so the way I'm doing it now is I've written this extension method public static int? ParseNullableInt(this string value) { if (value == null || value.Trim() == string.Empty) { return null; } else { try { return int.Parse(value); } catch { return null; } } } Is there a better way of doing this? EDIT: Thanks for the TryParse suggestions, I did know about that, but it worked out about the same. I'm more interested in knowing if there is a built-in framework method that will parse directly into a nullable int?

  • Program skips code after trying to parse XML in VB.NET

    I'm trying to parse some XML (html) I downloaded using WebRequest.Create() and then read it. However after loading the XML file using LoadXml(string), anything else I execute doesn't work. Setting a breakpoint on anything afterwards doesn't work and it doesn't break. I tried catching exception but none are occurring, so I'm not sure what the problem is.     Hi, I have an IDE named VxWorks 653 2.2.3 Development shell which needed to be invoked all the time when i notice any change in my source files.So i had invoked this shell through a VB scripts which invokes two more .bat(Batch files) to get this shell popped up for execution.Now i feel that since my IDE can be invoked by command line,it can also be invoked through nant scripts using the statement like D:\WindRiver\wrenv.exe -p vxworks653-2.2.3 But what i see is that its not at all invoking.I had tried all different ways but all turned out to be in vain. Can anyone pls suggest me any way either in nant scripts or in cruise control by which my IDE can be invoked.Now at present i am using VB scripts which is a very long proceess. Looking at the query using Profiler, I do not see my addition to the insert command. Questions: 1) Why is my addition to the insert command not making its way to the sql being executed on the database? 2) Is there a simpler way to have my DataSet refreshed with the identity values of the inserted rows? 3) Should I use the OnRowUpdated callback to add my child records?   • asp.net ajax toolkit combobox doesn't work in hidden div

    I have a combobox inside a hidden div which I use css display = none to make it invisible, but when I make the div visible by setting display = block, the combobox just show the input and its button and ul list all have css as display = 'none', visibility ='hidden'. I can tell it is done by combobox inbuild javascript because I tried to use javascript to set the css manually with no luck. It is a bug of combobox. Urgent help needed. I spent a week to solve this, and our team put a lot trust on the toolkit. Please help me on this, all javascript gurus, thanks. Below is the code to reproduce the bug.   • oData/ADO.NET Data Services using LINQ-to-SQL with a decryption layer

    I have written an application using LINQ-to-SQL that submits a web form into a database. I absact the LINQ-to-SQL away using a Repository pattern. This repository has the basic methods: Get(), Save(), etc. As a development of the project, I needed to encrypt certain fields in the form. This was trivial, as I just added the encryption calls to the Get(), Save() methods in the Repository. Now, I want to put an oData layer over it, to allow RESTful extraction from MS Excel 2010 (when it comes out). I have this working, after a few stumbles on useless error messages, etc. However, obviously, those encrypted fields are still encrypted. My repository pattern would have decrypted these for me. As far as I know, I have to directly bind my oData service to the LINQ-to-SQL context for the schema, etc. to work - unless I enter a whole world of pain (any URLs appreciated). Is there a way I can insert my encryption/decryption layer into the request so decryption is done "on the fly"? I looked at the OnStartProcessingRequest() overload of DataService but this doesn't seem that useful.

    Again I want to talk about safety of the Thread.Abort function. I was interested to have some way to abort operations which I can't control really and don't want actually, but I want to have my threads free as soon as possible to prevent thread thirsty of my application. So I wrote some test code to see if it's possible to use Thread.Abort and have the aborting thread clean up resources propertly. Here's code: int threadRunCount = 0; int threadAbortCount = 0; int threadFinallyCount = 0; int iterations = 0; while( true ) { Thread t = new Thread( () => { threadRunCount++; try { Thread.Sleep( Random.Next( 45, 55 ) ); } catch( ThreadAbortException ) { threadAbortCount++; } finally { threadFinallyCount++; } } ); t.Start(); Thread.Sleep( 45 ); t.Abort(); iterations++; } So, so far this code worked for about 5 mins, and threadRunCount was always equal to threadFinally and threadAbort was somewhat lower in number, because some threads completed with no abort or probably got aborted in finally. So the question is, do I miss something?

    I have a MVC application that I am now trying to add authentication and authorization to. I want to allow users to get to the site and be automatically authenticated. So I set authentication mode="Windows" in the web.config, and enabled NTLM in the project options. The site now shows my domain name in the top right when I run it, but when I hit a action than needs DB access, it tells me access is denied for my user-name? What step am I missing?

  • .NET - downloading multiple pages from a website with a single DNS query

    I'm using HttpRequest to download several pages from a website (in a loop). Simplifying it looks like this: HttpWebRequest req = (HttpWebRequest)HttpWebRequest.Create( "http://sub.domain.com/something/" + someString ); HttpWebResponse resp = (HttpWebResponse)req.GetResponse(); //do something I'm not quite sure actually but every request seems to resolve the address again (I don't know how to test if I'm right). I would like to boost it a little and resolve the address once and then reuse it for all requests. I can't work out how to force HttpRequest into using it, though. I have tried using Dns.GetHostAddresses, converting the result to a string and passing it as the address to HttpWebRequest.Create. Unfortunately, server returns error 404 then. I managed to google that's probably because the "Host" header of the http query doesn't match what the server expects. Is there a simple way to solve this?

    Hi, I have a MVC app where I have a User class and the user can also impersonate another user(Admin users only). So I have this code below that authenticates the request and instantiates my version of a User class. It then tries to get the impersonated user from the Session object but Session is not available in this method in the global.asax. Hope this makes sense.     I am trying to write some code that will allow me to dynamically load DLLs into my application, depending on an application setting. The idea is that the database to be accessed is set in the application settings and then this loads the appropriate DLL and assigns it to an instance of an interface for my application to access. This is my code at the moment: Dim SQLDataSource As ICRDataLayer Dim ass As Assembly = Assembly. _ LoadFrom("M:\MyProgs\WebService\DynamicAssemblyLoading\SQLServer\bin\Debug\SQLServer.dll") Dim obj As Object = ass.CreateInstance(GetType(ICRDataLayer).ToString, True) SQLDataSource = DirectCast(obj, ICRDataLayer) MsgBox(SQLDataSource.ModuleName & vbNewLine & SQLDataSource.ModuleDescription) I have my interface (ICRDataLayer) and the SQLServer.dll contains an implementation of this interface. I just want to load the assembly and assign it to the SQLDataSource object. The above code just doesn't work. There are no exceptions thrown, even the Msgbox doesn't appear. I would've expected at least the messagebox appearing with nothing in it, but even this doesn't happen! Is there a way to determine if the loaded assembly implements a specific interface. I tried the below but this also doesn't seem to do anything!     I have created a solution which read a large csv file currently 20-30 mb in size, I have tried to delete the duplicate rows based on certain column values that the user chooses at run time using the usual technique of finding duplicate rows but its so slow that it seems the program is not working at all.     my question is regarding Pure.Kromes answer to this post. I tried implementing my pages' custom error messages using his method, yet there are some problems I can't quite explain. a) When I provoke a 404 Error by entering in invalid URL such as localhost:3001/NonexistantPage, it defaults to the ServerError() Action of my error controller even though it should go to NotFound(). The Error views are located in /Views/Error/ as NotFound.cshtml and ServerError.cshtml. b) One funny thing is, When a server error occurs, it does in fact display the Server Error view I defined, however it also outputs a default error message as well saying that the Error page could not be found. Here's how it looks like: Do you have any advice how I could fix these two problems? I really like Pure.Kromes approach to implementing these error messages, but if there are better ways of achieving this don't hestitate to tell me. Thanks! *EDIT : * I can directly navigate to my views through the ErrorController by accessing /Error/NotFound or Error/ServerError. The views themselves only contain some text, no markup or anything. As I said, it actually works in some way, just not the way I intended it to work. There seems to be an issue with the redirect in the web.config, but I haven't been able to figure it out.
