• problem with closing sockets

  Hi, I'm trying to write a client/server program with threads. I close the socket once the connexion is finished. The servers gets plenty of new connexions, and the socket number (file descriptor) increases very quickly: after 5 minutes running I was already at around file descriptor number 800! Is this a normal thing? Do threads share file descriptors? When I do close(sockfd); is the number released immediatly or after a some time? PS: I used to do with fork(), and I didn't have this issue. • ODBC Connection Pooling

  I have inherited a suite of .Net c# applications from a developer which talk to an Informix database on a unix server. Instead of using the usual practices for managing the database connections (disposable pattern / "open late / close early"), the code seems to open one ODBC connection when each app loads and doesn't close it. Connection pooling is turned via the ODBC administrator. Is there any way of seeing how many ODBC connections are open? What is the effect of turning off connection pooling? Am I right in thinking the .NET framework will use connection pooling anyway?

• firefox component doesn't seem to be loading

Near as I can tell the component isn't working and I've no idea as to why. Is there way to make the box extend up and down so that the dialog remains centered ? also if there was enough content then it could potentially go beyond the bounds of the page so I would think I could use a max height to prevent that but what do I do if they re-size the window ? thanks for any help

• drupal's hook_preprocess_page not working as expected

  i am having an issue where hook_preprocess_page 's changes to &$variables is not being rendered, even though it is the last item under $theme_registry['page']['preprocess functions']. logging contents of $variables to a file show the contents changed, but contents appear unchanged on the site. flushed all cache on drupal, flushed all browser caches and still the same result. /** * Implementation of hook_preprocess_page(). */ function grinchlist_preprocess_page(&$variables) { if (grinchlist_usercheck($variables['user']['uid'])) { $variables['scripts'] = preg_replace('/<script[^>]*christmas_snow.*<\/script>/','',$variables['scripts']); } file_put_contents('/tmp/vars.txt',print_r($variables,true)); } the /tmp/vars.txt shows the variables properly, but the browser still show the script being loaded. this may be a silly example, but i've had this issue with the hook_preprocess_page in other instances and it would really help out to understand what is going on here... thanks.

• Firefox redirect response on xhr request

  Suppose we have the xhr 'POST' request that returns 'redirect' status code. In that case browser is sending additional xhr 'GET' by the given URL. I am not sure who is doing that call chain: browser itself or js library(using MooTools). The problem is that the second 'GET' request is not recognized as xhr by the server: It doesn't have "X-Requested-With" header contains "XMLHttpRequest" The problem appears only on Firefox, but not on Webkit. So, believe it is not related to js library bug. Does anyone have ideas how to fix it?

• How to store or share live data between PHP Requests?

  Hi, I want to start a project for facebook and the application will be like real-time multiplayer chess game. The problem I'm having is I have no idea how to store the data when a player moves one piece and update the new position in player2 browser. I'm gonna use PHP, MySQL for server side and jQuery for Client Rendering. The simplest idea is to store the data in XML or MySQL and re-generate the result to player2 browser. But I know that when thousand of players are playing, it will not be an efficient way. Since I don't have time to study new language for this project, I'm gonna have to stick with PHP. I'm not going to use flash either because I want my client side light-weight and flash-free. So is there any way that will solve my problems?

As Jon Skeet pointed out, there's an implicit memory barrier in the end of a constructor that makes sure that final fields are visible to all threads. But what if a constructor calls another constructor; is there such a memory barrier in the end of each of them, or only in one being called from outside? • PHP/Apache: Permission settings for uploaded JPEG image files not correct.

  I just setup a LAMP development server and am still trouble-shooting some things. The server is installed on one computer and I use a Windows laptop to write my code and test the site via the web browser. My file uploading script works in that JPEG image files are successfully uploaded to the server, but when I try to view the images in the web browser, permission is denied. I check the permissions on the file via the server and they are 600. I can fix the issue by chmod 777 theimage.jpg, but this doesn't seem like a good solution at all. Does the solution have something to do with Apache configuration? Or is there something else I should be doing. Thank-you, Mike

  Hello, I am using jquery.autocomplete.js and jquery.apitags to select a few elements from a div (.ac_results) This works great, and I can select multiple elements etc. However the jquery-aptags plugin does only fire when enter is pressed. This might confuse some users if they use the mouse to click instead of the arrows/enter on the keyboard. • Simulating mouse clicks on Mac OS X does not work for some applications.

  I'm writing an application for Mac OS X 10.6 and later in C++. One part of the application needs to simulate mouse movement and mouse clicks. I do this currently by posting CGEvent objects using CGEventPost(kCGHIDEventTap, event);. This works, for the most part - I can simulate mouse movement and clicks just fine, but it seems to fail in some areas. For example: In Mozilla Firefox and Safari, I can click on all the menus, but cannot click on a link within a website. When I try, the link is highlighted, but the browser never follows the link. However, I can right-click on a link, select "open link in new tab", and everything works as expected. Solved - creating the mouse event using CGEventCreateMouseEvent(...) makes the event work within web browser. I can click on the "Dashboard" icon to brink up the dashboard, but I cannot click on the "i" button on any of the dashboard widgets. Similarly, clicking on any of the search results from the spotlight search widget doesn't work either. This inconsistency is along application boundaries. What might be the cause?

• Shadow maps unable to properly project shadows in some situations?

  In the shadow map sample provided by Microsoft I've noticed an issue where shadows are not properly projected when thin geometry is projected at high angles, see here the shadows being projected, notice the poles from the lights are not projected: http://imgur.com/QwOBa.png And in this screenshot we see things from the lights perspective, not ethe poles are clearly visible: http://imgur.com/k2woZ.png So two questions really, is this an actual bug or a limitation with shadow mapping and if it's a bug how can I fix it? The source is directly from the Microsoft DirectX Sample Browser 'ShadowMap' sample from July 2004, the sample browser is the latest August 2009 one.

  Perhaps this has something to do with it being the mainForm, but I'll ask the question. I have my mainForm that is the first to load when the program is booted. I then click a button called Add, which should open a new form, and close the mainForm. The problem is, is shows the new form for a split second, then closes both.   Hi, I'm working with Symfony 1.2. I've a view with a list of objects. I can order them, filter them by category, or moving to the next page (there is pagination). Everything is done with AJAX, so I don't have to load all the page again. What I want to achieve is to have http://urltopage#page=1&order=title&cats=1,2 for example; so the new page is saved in the browser history, and he can paste it to another web. I haven't found a way to get the #part. I know that's only for the browser but I can't believe I can't get through PHP. I'm sure there is a simple solution I'm missing... thanks a lot!

• Multiple xmlns attributes affect page performance?

  We are working on adding some Facebook Connect functionality to our site. Part of their requirements for FB Connect require adding several additional xmlns attributes to the html element. We are likely going to have 5 or 6 of their custom attributes by the time we're done, and I want to know if this will negatively affect our page performance. I.e. will these be additional resources that the browser has to download? I have checked in Firebug and I don't see additional requests, but I don't know if that is because requests are not made by the browser, or if Firebug simply doesn't track them.
