• Does Google App Engine allow creation of files and folders on the server ?

  I know Google App Engine offers free space, but I wonder if it's for storing data in it's database only or does it also allow me to create files and directories on the server side to store my data ? • Launch intent viewer to display image from url

  I have the url of an image. What i need to do is launch the default image viewer for images using an intent. I tried launching it by using: Uri uri = Uri.parse("http://www.google.com/intl/en_ALL/images/srpr/logo1w.png"); Intent it = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW); it.setDataAndType(uri, "image/*") startActivity(it); But it doesn't work. If I do not specify the type of data, the intent launches the browser since the data is a url. It works basically (since you can see the image on the browser) but what I would like is to have the gallery display the image for me. I can also download the image into a Bitmap but I would still not know how to display the Bitmap using the gallery (if that's even possible). Any ideas?

• How to store or share live data between PHP Requests?

  Hi, I want to start a project for facebook and the application will be like real-time multiplayer chess game. The problem I'm having is I have no idea how to store the data when a player moves one piece and update the new position in player2 browser. I'm gonna use PHP, MySQL for server side and jQuery for Client Rendering. The simplest idea is to store the data in XML or MySQL and re-generate the result to player2 browser. But I know that when thousand of players are playing, it will not be an efficient way. Since I don't have time to study new language for this project, I'm gonna have to stick with PHP. I'm not going to use flash either because I want my client side light-weight and flash-free. So is there any way that will solve my problems?

As Jon Skeet pointed out, there's an implicit memory barrier in the end of a constructor that makes sure that final fields are visible to all threads. But what if a constructor calls another constructor; is there such a memory barrier in the end of each of them, or only in one being called from outside? • Handling Custom Protocols

  I'm looking to respond to an event from a web browser, hopefully any web browser. I'm working solely on windows and I came to the conclusion a custom protocol (I.E. myprot://collection/of/strings) is the best approach here (any objections?). But, handling an instance of this protocol seems to be a little less straight-forward. All I need is that collection of strings auto-magically passed to my already running application! (the app will only respond to these links while in a specific waiting state) So answer me this, if you can, Whats the 'popular' method of handling them or better yet Whats the 'best' (subjective - I know) way to do it? Although your answers don't need to be specific to my language, I am using Delphi for development. Thanks!

  I have a strange one here, I know there is a issue with airspace and transparency when opening up a web browser control within a WPF application. But in my instance I do not need transparency or opacity etc but the web pages are opening up with a strange overlay across them rather then showing solid colors? I have a WPF application that has a Grid and within the Grid there is a Frame and the frame source is a normal website url which is showing strange colors, as if there is a transparency/opacity issue going on? when I view the web page in a normal browser the page displays fine?

  We are working on adding some Facebook Connect functionality to our site. Part of their requirements for FB Connect require adding several additional xmlns attributes to the html element. We are likely going to have 5 or 6 of their custom attributes by the time we're done, and I want to know if this will negatively affect our page performance. I.e. will these be additional resources that the browser has to download? I have checked in Firebug and I don't see additional requests, but I don't know if that is because requests are not made by the browser, or if Firebug simply doesn't track them.

• Sign in as different user when using Integrated Windows Authentication

  I have restricted access to a site by using Integrated Windows Authentication and turning off anonymous access. This way I can then show them their real name (from looking up on Active Directory and using the server variable LOGON_USER) and do other related Active Directory tasks. How can I then prompt again for their user credentials, through a 'sign in as other user' link , showing the browser prompt (like you would get on a browser like Chrome or Firefox, or if the site was not in the 'Intranet' zone in IE) rather than a Web Form? Since SharePoint offers this functionality, I assume there is a way to do this through code, but I don't know what code can do this (using C#). I can send a 401 header which makes the prompt appear, but how do you then confirm if they are logged in?

  When running a test using the Tornado AsyncHTTPTestCase I'm getting a stack trace that isn't related to the test. The test is passing so this is probably happening on the test clean up? I'm using Python 2.7.2, Tornado 2.2.   hey, i saw this on a site a couple of days ago and i cant seem to find it again. in any case, this is what was on the site: the page opened regularly when you entered the url. upon clicking one of the links on the page, it "transitioned" to the next page (there was a color change). and the url in the address bar was changed to reflect that. eg: if the background was blue on site.com, when clicking on the about link, the background would change to green and the browser would show site.com/about. and so on. also, if the url entered was site.com/about, the bg would be green and on cliking the home page, the site would transition from green to blue and browser would show site.com im interested in finding out how this was done. searching on google got me the meta-refresh tag, but the ffect was much more complex and worked on all browsers. is there any other method out there?

  I'm doing some in browser editing, and I have some content that's on the order of around 20k characters long in a <pre>. So it looks something like: <pre> Text 1 Text 2 Text 3 Text 4 [...] Text 20,000 </pre> I'd like to use jquery to trim it down when someone hits a button to chop, but I'm having trouble doing it without overloading the browser. Assume I know that the character numbers are at 16,510 - 17,888, and what I'd like to do is trim it. I was using: jQuery('#textsection').html(jQuery('textarea').html().substr(range.start)); But browsers seem to enjoy crashing when I do this. Alternatives?

Web browser (tested on IE8, Firefox 3.5.2, Opera 10) shows file length before I start download the file. When I run this code on remote IIS7, web browser doesn't shows file length. File length is unknown. Why I don't get file length when this code runs under IIS7?

• Recommendations for a C++ polymorphic, seekable, binary I/O interface

  I've been using std::istream and ostream as a polymorphic interface for random-access binary I/O in C++, but it seems suboptimal in numerous ways: 64-bit seeks are non-portable and error-prone due to streampos/streamoff limitations; currently using boost/iostreams/positioning.hpp as a workaround, but it requires vigilance Missing operations such as truncating or extending a file (ala POSIX ftruncate) Inconsistency between concrete implementations; e.g. stringstream has independent get/put positions whereas filestream does not Inconsistency between platform implementations; e.g. behavior of seeking pass the end of a file or usage of failbit/badbit on errors Don't need all the formatting facilities of stream or possibly even the buffering of streambuf streambuf error reporting (i.e. exceptions vs. returning an error indicator) is supposedly implementation-dependent in practice I like the simplified interface provided by the Boost.Iostreams Device concept, but it's provided as function templates rather than a polymorphic class. (There is a device class, but it's not polymorphic and is just an implementation helper class not necessarily used by the supplied device implementations.) I'm primarily using large disk files, but I really want polymorphism so I can easily substitute alternate implementations (e.g. use stringstream instead of fstream for unit tests) without all the complexity and compile-time coupling of deep template instantiation. Does anyone have any recommendations of a standard approach to this? It seems like a common situation, so I don't want to invent my own interfaces unnecessarily. As an example, something like java.nio.FileChannel seems ideal. My best solution so far is to put a thin polymorphic layer on top of Boost.Iostreams devices.   Hi all, I am having an issue with SaveFileDialog for some reason. All I want to do is extract data from a text box line by line and write it to a text file, then save that text file to the desktop. The first bit of code works fine (though it doesn't save to the desktop). The second bit of code is what I want to use, but when it creates the text file the text file is empty. What did I do wrong in my second bit of code?
