• The Coolest Parts of Windows API

  I have noticed that there are quite a few community wikis about "Tips & Tricks" or "Hidden Features" in programming languages and APIs here at Stack Overflow. But I could not find any about my own personal favourites: Win32 API and Delphi. Therefore I start my "own" CW about Win32 API. There are (at least) two kinds of Win API users: those that have been brought up using Windows API in C/C++, and those that have been brought up using some level of abstraction above the Windows API. I belong to the latter category, being brought up using Delphi's VCL. But over the last five years, I have become increasingly interested in the underlaying API of the Windows operating system, and today I work a lot with it. Depending on which category a programmer belongs to, he (or possibly she) will think that different things are "cool" in the Windows API. For instance, whereas a VCL-brought up developer might think it it very cool to var errIcon: HICON; begin errIcon := LoadIcon(0, IDI_ERROR); DrawIcon(Canvas.Handle, 10, 10, errIcon), a programmer brought up using Windows API in C will not be as impressed. But no matter how you are "brought up": what are the coolest "tricks" in Windows API? I start by listing a few of my own favourites, some of which are more "cool" than "useful", though: LoadIcon and MessageBeep can load/play system default icons and sounds. Open the CD tray: mciSendString('Set cdaudio door open wait', nil, 0, 0); Fade out the screen (Windows Vista and later) and turn of the monitor: SendMessage(Application.Handle, WM_SYSCOMMAND, SC_MONITORPOWER, 2); GetWindowDC(GetDesktopWindow) returns the DC of the desktop.

• Why is my multithreaded Java program not maxing out all my cores on my machine?

  Hi, I have a program that starts up and creates an in-memory data model and then creates a (command-line-specified) number of threads to run several string checking algorithms against an input set and that data model. The work is divided amongst the threads along the input set of strings, and then each thread iterates the same in-memory data model instance (which is never updated again, so there are no synchronization issues). I'm running this on a Windows 2003 64-bit server with 2 quadcore processors, and from looking at Windows task Manager they aren't being maxed-out, (nor are they looking like they are being particularly taxed) when I run with 10 threads. Is this normal behaviour? It appears that 7 threads all complete a similar amount of work in a similar amount of time, so would you recommend running with 7 threads instead? Should I run it with more threads?...Although I assume this could be detrimental as the JVM will do more context switching between the threads. Alternatively, should I run it with fewer threads? Alternatively, what would be the best tool I could use to measure this?...Would a profiling tool help me out here - indeed, is one of the several profilers better at detecting bottlenecks (assuming I have one here) than the rest? Note, the server is also running SQL Server 2005 (this may or may not be relevant), but nothing much is happening on that database when I am running my program. Note also, the threads are only doing string matching, they aren't doing any I/O or database work or anything else they may need to wait on. Thanks in advance, -James

• VS 2008 designer and usercontrol.

  Hello, I have created a custom data grid control. I dragged it on windows form and set its properties like column and all & ran the project. It built successfully and I am able to view the grid control on the form. Now if i try to view that form in designer, I am getting following error.. However in the example above: Calling "dequeue" I will get the "lock/monitor" on this Now I am in the dequeue method. As the list is zero, the calling thread will be "waited" From my understanding I have now a deadlock situation, as I will have no chance of ever enquing an object (from an nother thread), as the "dequeue" method is not yet finised and the dequeue "method" holds the lock on this: So I will never ever get the possibility to call "enequeue" as I will not get the "this" lock. Backround: I have exactly the same problem: I have some kind of connection pool (List of Connections) and need to block if all connections are checked. • Can't place a breakpoint in asp.net master page file

  I have an MVC web application. I get an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error in line 16 below. It's a master page file. When I try to place a breakpoint in that line or anywhere in the file, I get a "this is not a valid location for a breakpoint" error. I have clicked on every line and I can't place a single breakpoint. I do have lines which have code only. How do I place a breakpoint in this file? Note: I can place breakpoints in code files. In some other aspx files, I can place a breakpoint in some code lines and some not. Does the inline code have to be in a special format to place a breakpoint? Using VS 2010 in Windows 7 64bit. • C# Reflection StackTrace get value

  I'm making pretty heavy use of reflection in my current project to greatly simplify communication between my controllers and the wcf services. What I want to do now is to obtain a value from the Session within an object that has no direct access to HttpSessionStateBase (IE: Not a controller). For example, a ViewModel. I could pass it in or pass a reference to it etc. but that is not optimal in my situation. Since everything comes from a Controller at some point in my scenario I can do the following to walk the sack to the controller where the call originated, pretty simple stuff: var trace = new System.Diagnostics.StackTrace(); foreach (var frame in trace.GetFrames()) { var type = frame.GetMethod().DeclaringType; var prop = type.GetProperty("Session"); if(prop != null) { // not sure about this part... var value = prop.GetValue(type, null); break; } } The trouble here is that I can't seem to work out how to get the "instance" of the controller or the Session property so that I can read from it.

• Best pratice: How do I implement a list similar to Stackoverflow's Users List?

  Technologies involved: ASP.NET Web-forms Javascript (jQuery for instance) Case To make it clearer let's give the Stackoverflow Users list as an example. This list can be manipulated at client-side. I can search, page and so forth. So obviously we would need to call jQuery.ajax to retrieve the HTML of each page given a search. Alright. Now this leaves me with the first question: What is the best way to render the response for the jQuery.ajax at server-side? I can't use templates I suppose, so the most obvious solution I think is to create the HTML tags as server-controls and render them as the result of an ASHX request? Is this is best approach? Nice. That solved we have yet another problem: When the user first enters the Authors List the first list page should already come from the server completely rendered alright? Of course we could render the first page as well as an ajax call but I don't think it's better. This time I CAN use templates to render the list but this template couldn't be reused in case 1. What do I do? Now the final question: Now we have 2 rendering strategies: 1) Client and 2) Server. How do I reuse code for the 2 renderings? What are the best pratices for solving these problems?

  Hi, I'm trying to create a bunch of MS visual studio unit tests for my n-tiered web app but for some reason I can't run those tests and I get the following error - "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" What I'm trying to do is testing of my data access layer where I use LINQ data context class to execute a certain function and return a result,however during the debugging process I found out that all the tests fail as soon as they get to the LINQ data context class and it has something to do with the connection string but I cant figure out what is the problem. UPDATE: Finally I've fixed this!!!!:) I dont know why but for some reasons in the app.config file the connection to my database was as follows: AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\EICDatabase.MDF So what I did is I just changed the path and instead of |DataDirectory| I put the actual path where my MDF file sits,i.e C:\Users\1\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\EICWebSystem\EICWebSystem\App_Data\EICDatabase.mdf After I had done that it worked out!But still it's a bit not clear what was the problem...probably incorrect path to the database?My web.config of ASP.NET project contains the |DataDirectory|\EICDatabase.MDF path though..

  I have a view-based iphone application that has a single play-pause button that plays an mp3 file. At the time of invoking my doPlayPauseButton() method, I 'd like to show the current time and total duration of this mp3 through the AVAudioPlayer instance I've created, called myAudioPlayer. I have placed two labels at the UI and i'm trying to assign the currentTime and duration properties to these label when the playing begins but my attempts have failed. • Passing an NSDate

  I'm new to the iPhone and objective-c and I am still trying to get my head around ownership of objects so bear with me. I have a DOBViewController that has a datepicker on it. I have created a custom init method: -(id)initWithInitialDate(NSDate *)initialDate; Another view controller has a date instance declared (NSDate *dob) that holds a value. I would like to pass this to the DOBViewController so that it can scroll the datepicker to the passed value. Here is the custom init method: - (id)initWithInitialDate:(NSDate *)initialDate { // Initialise ourselves self = [super init]; // Set the date of the date picker if (initialDate != nil) { datePicker.date = initialDate; } else { // Set it to today datePicker.date = [NSDate date]; } return self; } This is how I am sending the dob NSDate object: DOBViewController *dobViewController = [[DOBViewController alloc] initWithInitialDate:dob]; Where dob is a variable of type NSDate that is declared in the header file. This doesn't seem to work as initialDate is always NULL. What am I doing wrong?

  Hi, I'm getting confused in the doco how I should be setting up Ninject. I'm seeing different ways of doing it, some v2 versus v1 confusion probably included... Question - What is the best way in my WinForms application to set things up for NInject (i.e. what are the few lines of code required). I'm assuming this would go into the MainForm Load method. • Lightweight development web server with support for PHP v2

  In line with this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/171655/lightweight-web-app-server-for-php The above question has been asked numerous times and answered exactly the same in all the cases I've found using google. My question is similar to a degree but with a different desired goal: On demand development instances. I have come up with a somewhat questionable solution to host arbitrary directories in my user account for the purpose of development testing. I am not interested in custom vhosts but looking to emulate the behaviour I get when using paster or mongrel for Python & Ruby respectively. Ubuntu 9.10 TOXIC@~/ APACHE_RUN_USER=$USER APACHE_RUN_GROUP=www-data apache2 -d ~/Desktop/ -c "Listen 2990" Is there a better solution, could I do something similar with nginix or lighttpd? Note: The above won't work correctly for stock environments without a copied & altered httpd.conf. Update: The ideal goal is to mimic Paster, Webbrick, and Mongrel for rapid local development hosting. For those light weight servers, it takes less then a minute to get a working instance running ( not factoring any DB support ). Apache2 vhost is great but I've been using Apache2 for over ten years and it would be some sort of abomination hack to setup a new entry in /etc/hosts unless you have your own DNS, in which case a wildcard subdomain setup would probably work great. EXCEPT one more problem, it's pretty easy for me to know what is being hosted ( ex. by paster or mongeral ) just doing a sudo netstat -tulpn while there would be a good possibility of confusion in figure out which vhost is what.

• UIView Controller mysteriously getting deallocated

  I have a UINavigation scheme with a "welcome" page, a middle page, and a detail page. In the middle page, there's a segmented controller that can swap the main body of that page between a table, a calendar, and a MKMapView, each implemented with their own view controller classes. Today I implemented the MapView and its annotations and all of that. It's nice. And a detail disclosure on each callout takes you to the detail page just the same way as if you'd gotten there via the table. Lovely. I also have a right-button-bar button that pushes in a "search" view. From there you can search the data I'm navigating. When it's done filtering the data (an array of objects I'm keeping in a data singleton), it makes the table reload its data, and calls my annotation-clearer-and-builder methods on the map view, and then pops itself out, so the "middle" page (including whatever view was in the guts of it) is back on the screen. Problem is, if I go back and forth between the map and the search a couple times, any mention of the table view causes us to crash with: *** -[CALayer retain]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x710b810. (I obviously have NSZombies turned on.) I put an NSLog in the dealloc method of my table view controller. That thing's never getting called. I don't know if we're ditching it behind the scenes for memory purposes, or if I'm leaking it and can't get my hands back on it, or what. I'm sort of at a loss about where to look. Any hints?

  All, I'm going through the Friedman & Felleisen book "A Little Java, A Few Patterns". I'm trying to type the examples in DrJava, but I'm getting some errors. I'm a beginner, so I might be making rookie mistakes. Here is what I have set-up: public class ALittleJava { //ABSTRACT CLASS POINT abstract class Point { abstract int distanceToO(); } class CartesianPt extends Point { int x; int y; int distanceToO(){ return((int)Math.sqrt(x*x+y*y)); } CartesianPt(int _x, int _y) { x=_x; y=_y; } } class ManhattanPt extends Point { int x; int y; int distanceToO(){ return(x+y); } ManhattanPt(int _x, int _y){ x=_x; y=_y; } } } And on the main's side: public class Main{ public static void main (String [] args){ Point y = new ManhattanPt(2,8); System.out.println(y.distanceToO()); } } The compiler cannot find the symbols Point and ManhattanPt in the program. If I precede each by ALittleJava., I get another error in the main, i.e., an enclosing instance that contains ALittleJava.ManhattanPt is required I've tried to find ressources on the 'net, but the book must have a pretty confidential following and I couldn't find much. However I've noticed that in C# this doesn't seem to be the case. Do I have to pass const references in C# ? what do I need the "ref" keyword for? Please note that I know and understand what C# reference and value types are.

• asyncsocket Write Issue

  I am attempting to use asyncsocket to communicate GPS data from a server app on my iPhone to a client app on my macbook. The two devices connect without any problems, and when the first data is sent from the iPhone to the laptop in asyncsocket's didConnectToHost method, the data is sent without hiccup. When I subsequently try to write additional data to the laptop from the locationManager method, however, no data is written. • Trouble understanding the whole OSGi web eco system

  Hello, I am pretty new to the whole Java and OSGi world and I have trouble understanding the eco system of a OSGi web application. To be more precise I am at the moment trying to understand how all the parts of the eco system are related to each other: OSGi Framework (e.g. Apache Felix, Equinox, Knoplerfish) OSGi Runtime (e.g. Spring DM Server, Pax Runner, Apache Karaf) Web Extender (e.g. Pax Web Extender, Spring Web Extender) Web Container (e.g. Apache Tomcat, Jetty) To give you a visual representation of my actual understanding of their relationship check out this image: As far as I know the OSGi Framework is a implementation of the OSGi specification. The runtime is a distribution which adds additional functionality on top of the OSGi specification like logging for instance. Since there seem to be some differences in the classpath mechanism of OSGi and web containers like Tomcat you need some kind of translator. This part is handled by the "Web Extender". Would you please clarify this whole thing for me? Am I understanding everything correct?

  Hi! Im using NSXMLParser to dissect a xml package, I'm receiving &apos inside the package text. I have the following defined for the xmlParser: [xmlParser setShouldResolveExternalEntities: YES]; The following method is never called - (void)parser:(NSXMLParser *)parser foundExternalEntityDeclarationWithName:(NSString *)entityName publicID:(NSString *)publicID systemID:(NSString *)systemID The text in the field before the &apos is not considered by the parser. Im searching how to solve this, any idea???   i am using a m2m and a through table, and when i was trying to save, my error was: Cannot set values on a ManyToManyField which specifies an intermediary model so, i've modified my code, so that when i save the form, to insert data into the 'through' table too.But now, i'm having another error. • Can the Diamond Problem be really solved?

  A typical problem in OO programming is the diamond problem. I have parent class A with two sub-classes B and C. A has an abstract method, B and C implement it. Now I have a sub-class D, that inherits of B and C. The diamond problem is now, what implementation shall D use, the one of B or the one of C? People claim Java knows no diamond problem. I can only have multiple inheritance with interfaces and since they have no implementation, I have no diamond problem. Is this really true? I don't think so. See below: [removed vehicle example] Is a diamond problem always the cause of bad class design and something neither programmer nor compiler needs to solve, because it shouldn't exist in the first place? Update: Maybe my example was poorly chosen. See this image Of course you can make Person virtual in C++ and thus you will only have one instance of person in memory, but the real problem persists IMHO. How would you implement getDepartment() for GradTeachingFellow? Consider, he might be student in one department and teach in another one. So you can either return one department or the other one; there is no perfect solution to the problem and the fact that no implementation might be inherited (e.g. Student and Teacher could both be interfaces) doesn't seem to solve the problem to me.

  I am trying to call a stored procedure over a database link. The code looks something like this: declare symbol_cursor package_name.record_cursor; symbol_record package_name.record_name; begin symbol_cursor := package_name.function_name('argument'); loop fetch symbol_cursor into symbol_record; exit when symbol_cursor%notfound; -- Do something with each record here, e.g.: dbms_output.put_line( symbol_record.field_a ); end loop; CLOSE symbol_cursor; When I run this from the same DB instance and schema where package_name belongs to I am able to run it fine. However, when I run this over a database link, (with the required modification to the stored proc name, etc) I get an oracle error: ORA-24338: statement handle not executed.
