• Windows 7 file explorer preview window and password protected word documents

  When using the Windows 7 Explorer with the preview pane open you get a little preview of a file when you click on it. This includes Word, Excel spreadsheets, etc. My problem is if the Word document is password protected. Clicking on it in Explorer automatically asks for the password to display its preview. It does this if you single or double clicking on it. You then get an empty Word instance running (which allows it to display the preview) and another instance of Word with your actual file and you're asked for the password twice in total. This is annoying and untidy. Is there a way of stopping the preview pane from wanting to display password protected documents and thus not asking for the password to display a preview?

  I have the following handy abbreviation in VIM: iab for for<Space>(<Space>{{<Esc>kA<Left><Left><Left><Left><C-R>=Eatchar('\s')<CR> This nicely replaces for with the following text: for ( ) { } However, I would like this abbreviation to work only in code, not in comments or in single- or double- quoted strings. How might this constraint be accomplished? Note that I usually code in PHP, but often enough I find myself in other C-style languages (C, Java, occasional C#, etc.). Preventing the abbreviation from working in Python would be a nice bonus though I don't mind manually turning it off in Python if that is not an option. Thanks!

  I'm working on a search functionality for my website and I'm using Bootstrap's typeahead to show the results. So far so good. But what I want is to extend the function so that I could add an image and some other item, say description, etc. According to this post, that is possible: custom typeahead. Basically I need something like this as each result item: <div class="resultContainer"> <div class="resultImage"><img /></div> <div class="resultDesc"></div> <div class="resultLabel"></div> </div> Now it's: <li><a href="#"></a></li> And this doesn't even work with a longer text than the width of the typeahead. So the text doesn't go to the next line and hence doesn't fit the <li>. How can I use the the custom layout I want? (btw I have an array of arrays of results.   I'm pretty used to creating the PKI used for x509 authentication for whatever reason, SSL Client Verification being the main reason for doing it. I've just started to dabble with OpenVPN (Which I suppose is doing the same things as Apache would do with the Certificate Authority (CA) certificate) We've got a whole bunch of subdomains, and applicances which currently all present their own self-signed certificates. We're tired of having to accept exceptions in Chrome, and we think it must look pretty rough for our clients having our address bar come up red. For that, I'm comfortable to buy a SSL Wildcard CN=*.mycompany.com. That's no problem. What I don't seem to be able to find out is: Can we have our Internal CA root signed as a child of our wildcard certificate, so that installing that cert into guest devices/browsers/whatever doesn't present anything about an untrusted root? Also, on a bit of a side point, why does the addition of a wildcard double the cost of certificate purchase?

  I have a movie with 70 grayscale frames in MATLAB. I have put them in a 3-D matrix, so the dimensions are X, Y and time. I want to determine the frequencies in the time dimension, so I have to calculate the FFT for every point in the 3rd dimension. This is not a problem but I have to return the images to the original form with ifft. In a normal situation this would be true: X = ifft(fft(X)), but this is not the case it seems in MATLAB when you work with multidimensional data. This is the code I use: for i = 1:length y(:, :, i) = [img1{i, level}]; %# take each picture from an cell array and put it end %# and put it in 3D array y2 = ifft(fft(y, NFFT,3), NFFT, 3); %# NFFT = 128, the 3 is the dimension in which i want %# to calculate the FFT and IFFT y is 480x640x70, so there are 70 images of 640x480 pixels. If I use only fft, y2 is 480x640x128 (this is normal because we want 128 points with NFFT). If I use fft and ifft, y2 is 480x640x128 pixels. This is not normal, the 128 should be 70 again. I tried to do it in just one dimension by using 2 for loops and this works fine. The for loops take to much time, though.

• Should I run my own MTA?

  I need to send a large volume of emails, roughly 60.000 per week. At the moment we outsource this service to a third party, and we expect to double our volume within the next 6 months. Since the service is starting to be too expensive, I was thinking about setting up our own MTA. Our own SysAdmin told us it is not difficult at all to have our own MTA, but I'm afraid he might have oversimplified this. Is it difficult to handle a MTA? Should I be afraid that my MTA will lose the company mails? Should I stay with a third party service? p.s: The emails have been collected respecting the local legislation on privacy, so no spam.

• How can I force the Pictures app to refresh its library?

  I've imported some pictures to my "My Pictures" folder using Adobe Lightroom, but the Pictures app doesn't seem to notice the new files? Is there some way to force it to refresh its library? To be clear, Pictures are sorted under C:\Users\<username>\Pictures\ by year, then date; for example: C:\Users\<username>\Pictures\2012\2012-10-20, these show, however those in C:\Users\<username>\Pictures\2012\2012-10-29 do not, despite coming from the same camera, being in the same format, thumbnails working in Exporer, the pictures opening in the Pictures app via a double click in explorer, and Windows Media Centre having no problems. I have tried excluding the Pictures library, and reincluding it, but that had no effect. It has taken three or four reboots for even the folders to show up in the app, but it reports them as empty

  Hi, Given that today (for performance reasons?) variables are usually aligned to the "bit-width" (I wanted to use "word-width" here, but on x86 a "word" is still 16 bits right?) of the processor, would switching from a 32 bit OS to its 64 bit version double the RAM usage? Would this then in turn mean that to do the same work a 32 bit OS can do with 4 GB RAM (well, the 3.x GB actually...) with a 64 bit OS I would need 8 GB of RAM for programming? Please note that I'm only talking about everyday x86 computers here.

  Our SBS2003 server likes to lose connection every so often. This appears to 'kick' everyone out, so that no-one can access the server or its shared folders without a log off log in. It usually brings up an error message stating that Windows 7 (on the client machines) cannot find the server, even though its ping-able. Is there a way to login through the command line so I can just write a batch file and have the users double-click it and enter their credentials instead of closing down programs and logging out/in over and over?

• Image archiving on network folders.

  Our company uses Symantec Enterprise Vault to archive network folders and files, presumably to save on disk space. I can't see any other benefits. Our company is an architectural firm, and the problem our users face is locating particular images in network folders. Because all the files are archived, Windows Explorer is unable to generate image thumbnails. Each image needs to be individually restored from archive by double-click before it can be viewed. This is a big time-waster for our architects. Symantec say there is no workaround for this. Does anyone know of an alternative we could use for archiving images? Alternatively, some batch utility to create and maintain a thumbs.db file in each folder? Thanks.

  I am getting "ERROR: Network path was not found" when I try to create a scheduled task on my local machine. I am using this command at the command prompt: schtasks /tn taskname /tr taskpath /sc minute /mo 20 /sd 09/23/2010 /s \\%computername% /u username /p password When I give the above command without computername, username and password the task gets created perfectly fine. What am I doing wrong?? EDIT : I got it working by using the below command. I do not understand why it is working becuase I am using /ru and /rp which are remote user and remote password settings whereas I am executing the command on my local machine. And I had to give double quotes to computername. schtasks /tn taskname /tr taskpath /sc minute /mo 20 /sd 09/23/2010 /s "%computername%" /ru username /rp password

  Hello, I'm building a little network with 4 computer a plotter, 3 printers an a HP Fax/Scan/Copy/Print machine. The network is connected to the web by a D-Link router/firewall. I would like to add little server to have file sharing (reachable via VPN from outside by a single user-road-warrior), automatic backups. I would like to avoid big electrics bills or, to say It in a green way, I would like to avoid useless power consumption made by a big server with hot-plug, Raid, double PSU because I don't need all this stuff. The server must work 24/7 and the budget is between 400€ and 1000€. I'm evaluating the Asus EEE Box (with XP), a TranquilPC (with XP), a FitPC (again with XP), and an Asus TS Mini (with Windows Home Server). I like the latter but since I'm Europe I don't know where I can buy It. Do you have any suggestion/experience to share with me about: which hardware do I have to buy ? which O.S. ?

• what's the difference between /etc/init.d/sshd start and /usr/sbin/sshd?

  I'm having issues with passwordless ssh. I've checked, double checked and checked again that I have everything set up correctly. Both machines are RHEL6 and when the destination machine first boots up passwordless ssh does not work. If I stop ssh (service sshd stop or /ect/init.d/sshd stop) and then start it directly (/usr/sbin/sshd) passwordless ssh works fine. If I start ssh via the service (service sshd start or /etc/init.d/sshd start) passwordless ssh does not work. Just for testing I've tried commenting out the entire start() function in /etc/init.d/sshd and replace it with /usr/sbin/sshd - that still fails to allow passwordless ssh. I believe that this means that something in the /etc/init.d/sshd file is causing the screw up but I don't know enough about linux to narrow the issue down.

• Why are the external IP of my router not the same as the external IP of my computer

  I have a standard network setup where all my network devices, both WIFI and ethernet, are connected to the same router. Lately, however, I've been experiencing some very strange behavior. It started as a simple connecting error, when I tried to reach an FTP server using the external IP. Of course I went right into one of those CheckMyIP sites, to double check the IP and it turned out to be correct. Then I went into my router setup, which is through a tool called aiport-tool, because I have an Apple Aiport Extreme router. Turns out the router displays a different external IP, and for some reason that external IP works when I try to access the FTP server. Can anyone explain what is going on? Why are the devices connected to the router displaying an incorrect external IP? BTW i have no VPN/proxy setups on any of my devices.

  I have a PHP server script that SELECTs some data from a MySQL database. As soon as I have the result from mysql_query and mysql_fetch_assoc stored in my own local variables, I want to delete the row I just selected. The problem with this approach is that it seems that PHP has done pass-by-reference to my local variables instead of pass-by-value, and my local variables become undefined after the delete command. Is there anyway to get around this? • Out-of-memory algorithms for addressing large arrays

  I am trying to deal with a very large dataset. I have k = ~4200 matrices (varying sizes) which must be compared combinatorially, skipping non-unique and self comparisons. Each of k(k-1)/2 comparisons produces a matrix, which must be indexed against its parents (i.e. can find out where it came from). The convenient way to do this is to (triangularly) fill a k-by-k cell array with the result of each comparison. These are ~100 X ~100 matrices, on average. Using single precision floats, it works out to 400 GB overall. I need to 1) generate the cell array or pieces of it without trying to place the whole thing in memory and 2) access its elements (and their elements) in like fashion. • Filemaker Server Not Installing and Windows Problems

  When I tried installing Filemaker Server 8.0 on Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition R2, an error message pop up that states: MMC has detected an error in a snap-in. It is recommended that you shut down and restart MMC. After this message pops up, Filemaker Server freezes. I'm also having problems with openssl and running executable files, but am not sure if the 2 are related. Error message for openssl states: Openssl.exe encountered a problem and needed to close. In one of the computers connected to the network running this same Server 2003 R2, when I tried double-clicking on Dr. Web antivirus to do a scan, nothing happens. I have done this many times before reinstalling the server, and it never gave trouble before this. Any help given is appreciated.
