• Check if a symlink has changed

  I have a daemon that, when it's started, loads its data from a directory that happens to be a symlink. Periodically, new data is generated and the symlink updated. I want a bash script that will check if the current symlink is the same as the old one (that the daemon started with) and if not, restart the daemon. My current thought is: if [[ ! -e $old_dir || $(readlink "$data_dir") == $(readlink "$old_dir") ]]; then echo restart ... ln "$(readlink "$data_dir")" "$old_dir" -sf else echo no restart fi The abstract requirement is: each time the script runs, it needs to check if a symlink on a given path now points to a something other than it did the last time and if so do something. (The alternative would be to check if the data at the path has changed but I don't see that being any cleaner.) My questions: Is this a good approach? Does anyone have a better idea? Where should I put $old_dir?

• Check if exists, if so, update by 1++, if not insert

  Hey guys quick question, I currently have an insert statement $query= "INSERT into new_mail VALUES ('$to1', '0')"; where fields are username, and message_number Currently what I would do to check if the entry exists, is do a select query then check the number of rows with mysql_num_rows (php). If rows==1 then I get the current message_number and set it equal to $row['message_number']++1. Then I update that entry with another query. Is there an easier way to do all this in just mysql with just one query (check if exists, if not insert, if so update message_number, increase by 1)?

• Check If Stored Procedure Returns Value

  Hello all, I am using Linq 2 Sql in VS 2010, and I have the following stored procedure to check a username and password ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.CheckUser ( @username varchar(50), @password varchar(50) ) AS SELECT * FROM Users Where UserName=@username AND Password=@password The problem I'm having is that it throws an exception if the username and password are incorrect. I'd like to perform a check to see if there is a return value, rather than using try/catch to determine whether the procedure returned a value. Should I do this check in code (C#)? Or is there a way to do it in SQL? Thanks.

• .htaccess Permission denied. Unable to check htaccess file

  Hi, I have a strange problem when adding a sub-domain to our virtual server. I have done similar sub-domains before and they have worked fine. When I try to access the sub-domain I get an 403 Forbidden error. I checked the error logs and have the following error: pcfg_openfile: unable to check htaccess file, ensure it is readable I've searched Google and could only find solutions regarding file and folder permissions, that I have checked and the solution isn't solved. I also saw problems with Frontpage Extensions, but that's not installed on the server. Edit Forgot to say that there isn't a .htaccess file in the directory of the sub-domain

• ls -l freezes terminal locally and remotely

  I've been reading other SF threads regarding ls not returning results or freezing and stalling terminal sessions and it appears they usually the fault of network problems. My problem however, occurs both over remote SSH sessions but also if I am physically at the server itself... I just installed CentOS 5.4 on one of our servers. I'm setting up some rdiff-backup scripts and when I downloaded librsync and untared it, thats when I started seeing some weird behavior with ls -l. wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/librsync/files/librsync/0.9.7/librsync-0.9.7.tar.gz/download /tmp cd /tmp tar -xzf librsync-0.9.7.tar.gz Simple enough. To view the files in this directory I did this: ls results: librsync-0.9.7 librsync-0.9.7.tar.gz Now, if I ls -l, my terminal freezes. I have to re-ssh in to keep going. After reading SF threads, I thought it was network related. So I was extremely surprised to go sit down at the server itself and see the exact same thing happen... So its obviously not a network issues. Even if I ls /tmp/librsync-0.9.7, my terminal freezes just the same...   i am writing a script to install a program with bash, i want to exit on error so i added "set -e" in the beginning of my script. the problem is that i have to check if a user exists inside of my script, to do this i am using "grep "^${USER}:" /etc/passwd", if the user exists, the script runs normally, but if the user doesn't exist, this command exists, and i don't want to exit on this case (i have to create the user and continue my installation). so what's the solution to make my script continue running ?? i tried to redirect the output of "grep" to a variable, but i still have the same problem :( thanks.

  Good day! I have a system that was possible rootkited (the IRC bot was installed and +ai attributes were set on /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, /bin, /sbin). The IRC bots were deleted and system was upgraded to 5.0.4 from 4.0. I'm afraid that something in folders I've mentioned was modified.   I am having many image files in one folder. Mostly there are jpg, but some png, bmp, gif, tif also (but jpg is most important if others are not possible). There are also many xml files in same folder with same names as image files are having. So there is something like this: 1.jpg, 1.xml, a.png, a.xml, 3g.bmp, 3g.xml... All xml files are having only 1 line: <IMGRES WIDTH="1234" HEIGHT="567" /> (of course numbers are not same). I am looking for some easy way to check all image sizes and confirm if they are same as in xml or not. So I want output like: imagename, xmlwidth x xmlheight, realwidth x realheight, match/error Is this possible in only Windows with no other software installed?

  On the documentation, they advice the monitor command. But it has a 50% performance penalty for the whole system, and how should I do that ? Whatching the ouput using SSH until I don't see anything ? Let's say I have 3 servers: 1 with a redis master, 1 with a redis slave, and one with my website querying the redis master. How can I, from my website server, make cleany the decision to fallback to the slave by sending the SLAVEOF NO ONE command ? My first step would be to put some kind of timeout check with a simple ping, just to be sure the server is online. But for redis specifically, I have no clue.

  Sometimes when I want to delete a file (from within a script), I will just delete it rather than checking if it exists first. So I do this: $ rm "temp.txt" 2>/dev/null Instead of this: [ -f "temp.txt" ] && rm "temp.txt" I just feel it's a waste of time to go and check if the file exists and return an exit code. So, perhaps it's quicker to do it the first way, especially if most of the time, the file is likely to be present. Are there any other advantages (or downsides) to do it one way or the other? Am I wrong to think it will ever be quicker?

  I'm using the Table Value constructor to insert a bunch of rows at a time. However if i'm using sql replication, I run into a range check constraint on the publisher on my id column managed automatically. The reason is the fact that the id range doesn't seem to be increased during an insert of several values, meaning that the max id is reached before the actual range expansion could occur (or the id threshold). It looks like this problem for which the solution is either running the merge agent or run the sp_adjustpublisheridentityrange stored procedure. Then I do the ping from each datacenter to the my partner's IP. 1st datcenter's result: 75ms 2nd datacenter's result: 2ms I 've done multiple time, 2nd datacenter always give better result. Now my question is: Isn't the 1st datacenter suppose to give better result, since their location are closer ? How come the result produce different, what is the accurate way to check latency ?   I've trying to create a Error Log to help me analyse my mistakes. So for simplicity, lets assume I have two columns "Type of Question" - with values SC,RC,CR and another column that indicates whether I got this question "right/wrong".Let's assume this is my table: Question No. | Right/Wrong | Question Type | Right | SC | Right | RC | Wrong | SC | Wrong | CR | Right | RC (Pardon my formatting skills). And I want an output table like this Type of Question | Right | Wrong | Total SC | 1 | 1 | 2 RC | 2 | 0 | 2 CR | 0 | 1 | 1 So basically what I want to do is check Column3 for SC using =COUNTIF(C1:C5,"SC"), and return the total number of SC questions, and then outta the SC , I need to find out which are Right.If I know the right and the total I can get the wrong. I have never written a macro so a formula based answer would suffice.

• TFS 2010 Check-in Policies

  Currently we have check-in policies that are implemented by installing the TFS 2010 Power Tools on each developer machine. I was wondering if there was a way we could store those policies centrally within the TFS Server itself and push them out to the Developer machines in a group policy fashion without having to install anything additional on the Developer machines as realistically we only want the Power Tools on a couple of people's machines. I can't seem to find any documentation on how to do this or if it's possible so if someone could point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.

• Check SSD stability before returning it as broken?

  I have the Transcend SSD 720 256GB 2,5" 7mm disk. And randomly I get disk IO in utorrent and large files copying to external will fail. I have removed it from my laptop since I need max stability. I use my laptop on exams. How can I really bench/make-it-sweat whilst connected to my desktop? I want to re-create some of the fails as I need proof if I am to return it. Firmware is updated. BIOS on laptop is updated. I could just completely nul the disk and then check for bad sectors, but is there anything else I could use for testing? Edit: It has 7 bad sector replacement operations. What does it mean?

  I am new to nagios and we have a small issue I need to ask assistance with. Many of the machines that we monitor can go unresponsive for a bit when some very intensive cpu tasks are run. This makes nagios send warnings and alerts while these hosts are busy reporting things like 'ping timeout' or 'zombie processes' and even swap space warnings, but in actuality there is not a problem. Is there a way to configure nagios to not send such alerts, but check x number of times over a period of time and only then send an alert at the end of that time if the server in question has not recovered?. Looking at the commands.cfg file, I see entries like this: define command{ command_name check_local_swap command_line $USER1$/check_swap -w $ARG1$ -c $ARG2$ } How could I modify this example to accomplish what I want above.   I am having following problem with the location service with IOS on the simulator: using phonegap 2.2.0 with xcode 4.5.2, Cordova.plist EnableLocation = YES navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(myPositionSuccess, myPositionError, {maximumAge: 300000, timeout:10000, enableHighAccuracy : true}); myPositionSuccess is never called, with following error at navigator.geolocation locationManager::didFailWithError (null) I just tried it on the simulator. Any Idea?
