• How to remove the old driver for Canon MX870 and install a new one?

  I am using 12.04. In addition to Canon MX870 printer only shows "Processing" on the status LCD, I'm not sure if I successfully removed the old MX870 driver (I removed it by using Ubuntu Software Center), then I added a new PPA, apt-get update and then: $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:michael-gruz/canon-trunk $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install cnijfilter-mx870series Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package cnijfilter-mx870series is not available, but is referred to by another package.   I received the following email from a user of one of our websites: This morning I tried to log into example.com and I was blocked by websense at work because it is considered a "social networking" site or something. I assume the websense filter is maintained by a central location, so I'm hoping that by letting you guys know you can get it unblocked. per Wikipedia, Websense is web filtering or Internet content-control software. This means one (or more) of our sites is being miscategorized by websense as "social networking" and thus disallowed for access at any workplace that uses websense to control what websites their users can and cannot access during work hours. (I know, they are monsters!) How do we dispute this websense classification error, as our websites should generally be considered "information technology" and never "social networking"? How do we know what category websense has put our sites in, so we can pro-actively make sure they're not wrong?

  So one of the main reasons I migrated to Ubuntu 12.04 from Windows 7 was to be able to have more control over my system due to the flexibility and customizability of a Linux operating system. However, with Ubuntu I do not feel as if I am as in control as I can be. What I mean to say is, where are the source codes and everything for all of this that I can edit on my machine. For example, suppose I want to position my dock on the left to be on the right without wanting to install any new software. I simply want to see the GUI files and reposition it myself. How can I do that, if that's even possible? Thank You!

  I'm running 12.04 and I've installed skype via the software centre. As with 11.10 everything works fine with 12.04 as well. There is only one thing that does not work. I can't see myself in Skype video calls. The video call works fine, I can see the other side the other side can see me. Buid in microphone works. If I click on 'show myself' during the video call nothing happens. I know that it works on Ubuntu in general as I had it working a while back on a different machine (Xubuntu 11.04). Could that be related to the GPU? I'm now on a intel/nvidia one. Any Ideas where I can hunt for some options or tweaking?

  I received a software update for Ubuntu 12.10 while using Zorin OS6 wireless. I accepted the update and installed 12.10. Please tell me the step by step, using layman's terms, on how to get Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox to connect to the Internet? I am receiving DNS server error with both browsers. I can connect to my router wired or wireless. I posted and received initial information but was not sure exactly what some of the terms were and or what to do next etc. I am not necessarily familiar with some technical terms, or do I need to install additional plug-ins? I do not know what proxy or DCHP means or what do with these terms please, please help. I am not a programmer, nor do I work in IT. Again please help.

• Why do people use programming books?

  I find that when someone asks what is the best way to learn how to program, people usually provide them with references to a bunch texts written by various authors. However I don't believe many people at all learn to program from books? I find that they are usually faced with a challenge and then use programming as tool to overcome it. For example I 'got into' programming because I wanted to start a server for a game I was playing, so I googled and read through the support for that particular server and now I am a employed software engineer, using only the skills I developed (and then further developed) by coding C# scripts for a not very popular server package. So my question is, do people generally find it easier to learn from these books? I know I have looked at a few of them and found them far too 'dry' to encourage me to finish it.

• Knowing your user is key--Part 1: Motivation

  I was thinking where the best place to start in this blog would be and finally came back to a theme that I think is pretty critical--successful gamification in the enterprise comes down to knowing your user.  Lots of folks will say that gamification is about understanding that everyone is a gamer.  But at least in my org, that argument won't play for a lot of people.  Pun intentional.  It's not that I don't see the attraction to the idea--really, very few people play no games at all.  If they don't play video games, they might play solitaire on their computer.  They may play card games, or some type of sport.  Mario Herger has some great facts on how much game playing there is going on at his Enterprise-Gamification.com website. But at the end of the day, I can't sell that into my organization well.  We are Oracle.  We make big, serious software designed run your whole business.  We don't make Angry Birds out of your financial reporting tools.  So I stick with the argument that works better.  Gamification techniques are really just good principals of user experience packaged a little differently.  Feedback?  We already know feedback is important when using software.  Progress indicators?  Got that too.  Game mechanics may package things in a more explicit way but it's not really "new".  To know how to use game mechanics, and what a user experience team is important for, is totally understanding who our users are and what they are motivated by. For several years, I taught college psychology courses, including Motivation.  Motivation is generally broken down into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.  There's intrinsic, which comes from within the individual.  And there's extrinsic, which comes from outside the individual.  Intrinsic motivation is that motivation that comes from just a general sense of pleasure in the doing of something.  For example, I like to cook.  I like to cook a lot.  The kind of cooking I think is just fun makes other people--people who don't like to cook--cringe.  Like the cake I made this week--the star-spangled rhapsody from The Cake Bible: two layers of meringue, two layers of genoise flavored with a raspberry eau de vie syrup, whipped cream with berries and a mousseline buttercream, also flavored with raspberry liqueur and topped with fresh raspberries and blueberries. I love cooking--I ask for cooking tools for my birthday and Christmas, I take classes like sushi making and knife skills for fun.  I like reading about you can make an emulsion of egg yolks, melted butter and lemon, cook slowly and transform them into a sauce hollandaise (my use of all the egg yolks that didn't go into the aforementioned cake).  And while it's nice when people like what I cook, I don't do it for that.  I do it because I think it's fun.  My former boss, Ultan Ó Broin, loves to fish in the sea off the coast of Ireland.  Not because he gets prizes for it, or awards, but because it's fun.  To quote a note he sent me today when I asked if having been recently ill kept him from the beginning of mackerel season, he told me he had already been out and said "I can fish when on a deathbed" (read more of Ultan's work, see his blogs on User Assistance and Translation.). That's not the kind of intensity you get about something you don't like to do.  I'm sure you can think of something you do just because you like it. So how does that relate to gamification?  Gamification in the enterprise space is about uncovering the game within work.  Gamification is about tapping into things people already find motivating.  But to do that, you need to know what that user is motivated by. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is one of those areas where over-the-top gamification seems to work (not to plug a competitor in this space, but you can search on what Bunchball* has done with a company just a little north of us on 101 for the CRM crowd).  Sales people are naturally competitive and thrive on that plus recognition of their sales work.  You can use lots of game mechanics like leaderboards and challenges and scorecards with this type of user and they love it.  Show my whole org I'm leading in sales for the quarter?  Bring it on!  However, take the average accountant and show how much general ledger activity they have done in the last week and expose it to their whole org on a leaderboard and I think you'd see a lot of people looking for a new job.  Why?  Because in general, accountants aren't extraverts who thrive on competition in their work.  That doesn't mean there aren't game mechanics that would work for them, but they won't be the same game mechanics that work for sales people.  It's a different type of user and they are motivated by different things. To break this up, I'll stop here and post now.  I'll pick this thread up in the next post. Thoughts?   In my Ubuntu version, I cannot get the essence of Ubuntu because my version is low. Most of the software cannot be used and some command are not really working. My 300GB HDD is not found. My primary HDD is 750GB, and has Windows 7 and Ubuntu on it in dual-boot. On Windows, a 450GB HDD for storage is found. The next question is about my launcher. It is not on the left side, so I cannot use it efficiently because it is in one third of my desktop.

• Proprietary Driver missing after Kernel upgrade

  I recently upgraded my kernel to the Linux 3.4 kernel. Upon doing so, I found that it zapped my proprietary driver for my graphics card. As an alternative, I had saved Catalyst 12.8, but now it will not open through Software Center. I tried several other terminal methods, but it seems that many of these postings are bunk. They only work until you're almost done and then you get errors. I just need a little help from somebody who has been there, as I am new to Ubuntu. I'm kind of afraid to reboot because this is my 3rd full load of Ubuntu. Any ideas?

  I want to upgrade my Ubuntu Lucid to Kubuntu Maverick (with a fresh install of course). I want to try KDE, but I have heard there are slight issues with the native QT applications compared to the GTK application equivalents - such as nvidia-settings, Gimp, Ubuntu Software Centre, and especially th eSynaptic package manager (which in detail showed the administration package / KPackageKit is not powerful yet than synaptic) I believe we can have run GTK+ applications in KDE, but GTK+ applications do not blend with the KDE desktop. Also Java does not provide a GUI for KDE/QT. Should I install Kubuntu (KDE / QT) or stay with ubuntu (GNOME / GTK +)?

• Is it possible to power up ports on a USB hub from Ubuntu?

  I have a D-Link DUB-H7 powered USB 2.0 hub connected to my computer. Occasionally when I reboot the system, I've noticed that some of the ports on the hub get powered down: the green light next to the port is turned off, and the device attached to that port is not visible to lsusb or similar commands. Devices attached to the other ports on the hub function as normal. I am able to restore the ports by disconnecting power to the hub temporarily (from the computer, AC adapter and any devices that might provide any power such as my phone), but this is a bit of a hassle. It seems like something that might be related to power management, so is there some way you can tell the USB hub to power up through software?

• How do you navigate and refactor code written in a dynamic language?

  I love that writing Python, Ruby or Javascript requires so little boilerplate. I love simple functional constructs. I love the clean and simple syntax. However, there are three things I'm really bad at when developing a large software in a dynamic language: Navigating the code Identifying the interfaces of the objects I'm using Refactoring efficiently I have been trying simple editors (i.e. Vim) as well as IDE (Eclipse + PyDev) but in both cases I feel like I have to commit a lot more to memory and/or to constantly "grep" and read through the code to identify the interfaces. As for refactoring, for example changing method names, it becomes hugely dependent on the quality of my unit tests. And if I try to isolate my unit tests by "cutting them off" the rest of the application, then there is no guarantee that my stub's interface stays up to date with the object I'm stubbing. I'm sure there are workarounds for these problems. How do you work efficiently in Python, Ruby or Javascript?

I'm wanting to get back into programming, and I'd eventually like get into app development for Ubuntu, but I'm not sure where to get started. Which version of Ubuntu is currently recommended for app development, especially for those wanting to publish their apps to the Software Centre? Should app developers use the current LTS release, or, can any of the new releases be used? Should developers use the 32-bit or 64-bit edition of Ubuntu, or does this not matter?   my laptop Toshiba Qosmio G30 has nVidia GeForce Go 7600 card and it suppose to support 3D . i run unity 2d now . I run 12.04 and the graphic driver is--VESA: G73 Board - toshg73m-- by UBUNTU. when i run /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p then i get this list Not software rendered: no Not blacklisted: yes GLX fbconfig: yes GLX texture from pixmap: yes GL npot or rect textures: yes GL vertex program: yes GL fragment program: yes GL vertex buffer object: yes GL framebuffer object: yes GL version is 1.4+: yes Unity 3D supported: no the card is not blacklisted but a similar one with GT is! Do you think that there is a chance the laptop can run the unity 3d? and may be i could change the resolution of the screen to a higher one too! I tried all the nvidia drivers provided but none works (except 96 in ubuntu 12.04 ). i get a black screen or terminal screen. best wishes to all

  Possible Duplicate: What is the best method to start understanding BIG project source code? I have a project that I would like to dissect to learn something new from it. This project is about 200 megabytes. For me, it is just impossible to open every cpp and hpp file and read each and every one. I also don't know what is the best approach in this case. Many people on the internet are looking for an UML tool to generate some kind of graph. I think that UML works well when you are starting a project and you want to express the business logic of your classes and methods. In my opinion UML is totally useless when studying a project only from its source code. Also UML is an OO language, in a large sized C++ project I find a lot of stuff that is not an object and can express some other kind of paradigm. Can you name a tool or a class of software that can help with this?

  As I said. There are no programs on the dash list (seacher on appmenu). Yesterday I logged into my account and I tried to find some program but there wasn't any! Additionaly, I tried to view installed programs and manually find program which I looked for, but nothing was displayed :( And today, when I want to turn on Ubuntu Software Center, it just don't turn on .< I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 (64bit). I installed "fresh" O.S. few days ago. Ubuntu is updated and has many Gigabytes of disk memory available. Please help me and my unfortunate O.S. Thank you for all answers.

• How are minimum system requirements determined?

  We've all seen countless examples of software that ships with "minimum system requirements" like the following: Windows XP/Vista/7 1GB RAM 200 MB Storage How are these generally determined? Obviously sometimes there are specific constraints (if the program takes 200 MB on disk then that is a hard requirement). Aside from those situations, many times for things like RAM or processor it turns out that more/faster is better with no hard constraint. How are these determined? Do developers just make up numbers that seem reasonable? Does QA go through some rigorous process testing various requirements until they find the lowest settings with acceptable performance? My instinct says it should be the latter but is often the former in practice.

Installation options available with EM 12.1.0.2: User can do fresh Install or an upgrade from versions EM 10.2.0.5, 11.1, or 12.1.0.2 ( Bundle Patch 1 not mandatory). Upgrading to EM 12.1.0.2 from EM 12.1.0.1 is not a patch application (similar to Bundle Patch 1) but is achieved through a 1-system upgrade.
