• How should I organize my backups ?

  I'm using for the first time rsync to create daily backups of my websites and I was wondering if I should overwrite the previous copy or should I create multiple copies and overwrite only the oldest one ? (I might not have enough space for that, though). I actually have also this question. Let's suppose most of files are accidentally erases.. does rsync delete all these files from the backup space because they don't exist anymore ? How does exactly work in this case ? thanks

• mac & windows backup solutions - Offsite Backups

  Im looking for some advice on a system Im looking to impliment within our company, but so far I have not found an adequate solution too. I need to provide my users with a way to backup there laptops whilst in the office and if possible offsite as well, we have a mixture of Windows & Mac laptops so software should ideally be multi platform. This is the first time i am attempting to-do something like this as we normally charge the users with responsibility for their backups. I have ruled out most of the services like dropbox, sugarsync (unless one exists that does this) as whilst they does exactly what I want it does not give me any control over restoring / recovering data in the event of the user being unavailable, as it requires their account password to access data.

• Whats the best way to deal with backups for my php/mysql application

  I'm creating php application for my client and now thinking what would be the best way to do backups, automatically if possible? I don't have much experience in this area and in case something goes wrong, or if I need to migrate, I would like to have fast way of getting it all back online. I understand "something goes wrong" is a very wide term, but lets say that someone hacks my site and wipes out database and all the files. My app. is written in php/mysql and I got access to cpanel (hosted with justhost.com if that makes any difference :). I used Joomla and it has JoomlaPack that does complete backup almost automatically and in case site fails, its easy to revert, or migrate if necessary. Is there anything like that for my configuration that would make reverting/migration, easy?

• Crontab -- scheduling my backups

  I want to do a backup every Friday night (no, this is not the whole backup routine, just part of it). Each Friday night's backup will not be overwritten until 4 weeks later. So, essentially, I have a four revolving backups: Week1, week2, week3, and week4. Now, I need the week1 backup script to run every 4 weeks. But I also want week2's script to run every four weeks. I know that I can tell the crontab to execute something every X weeks/days/hours/whatever. However, how do I set it up so that each of these four scripts actually run on different weeks, how do I avoid all 4 scripts running on the same night, then dutifully waiting for weeks only to all run again? • Nightly backups (and maybe other tasks) causing server alerts

  I have two independent alert notification systems for my servers. The server is a virtual machine on Linode and one of the alerts comes from Linode. The other monitoring system we use is New Relic. They are both watching out for IO utilization. Every night I get alerts from both of them as the server is using too much IO. I run quite a few tasks in the middle of the night but the one I confirmed that can cause IO-warnings is running the backups. The backup is done by s3cmd sync. I tried ionice but it still generates the warnings. Getting warnings every night reduces the efficacy of warnings when they happen for real. For Linode I could raise the level at which a warning is issued, but it might mean making the whole thing useless as the level is too high. What would be the proper solution for this?

The directory looks sort of like this: backup/Day1/photos/1.jpg .../2.jpg backup/Day2/photos/2.jpg .../3.jpg .../4.jpg backup/DayN/photos/2.jpg .../3.jpg .../9.jpg Files with same name are identical. There are many duplicates. Due to the way the backup system works, it's not possible to create incremental backup directly. I always get the entire dump each day. If I want to create a compressed archive for a date range, say Day 5~9, what is the best tool/compression algorithm to do that?

• Offloading backups to secondary network

  I'm trying to solve a problem- Currently, we are constantly backing up and have no budget for additional servers. Our production network is still a 10/100 and handles voip, SQL plus our backup traffic, and I'd like to offload the backup traffic onto a secondary network- all of our servers have secondary NIC's that are not in use, and all support gigabit (Our switching hardware does not- a topic for another day). I'd like to move my backups off the production network, but I am having a hard time getting the computers to communicate. I am using a Netgear GS724T switch for the backup network- Chosen for cost and because I have used them extensively on networks saturated with ghosting traffic, so I know it's up to the task. I have defined a VLAN, with ports that are not members of any other VLAN. All traffic is untagged on the VLAN. I have set the servers with 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.11 addresses, 255.255.255.0 netmask and I have tried a blank GW, using the local IP of the server 192.168.1.whatever address, and I have tried using the switch's production-side IP as the GW. The machines cannot find each other. DNS addresses are blank because I am going purely by IP for now... Any ideas how to get these machines to talk? they are Windows machines, running Server 2008R2 and 2003R2. Thanks!

• SQL Backup files, distinguish partial and full backup files

  I have scheduled backups running through SQL Agent, with Full Backups nightly, and differential backups hourly. Is there a way to determine which of the backup files is the Full backup, and which is the latest differential? Intuitively, it would seem the largest backup within 24 hours is the full, and the latest smaller backup is the partial. However, this isn't robust. Is there a way to probe the backup file to check the backup type? (Preferably in c#)

• SAN performance issues storing SQL Server tempdb on a SAN that's being backed up

  I'm afraid I don't know much about SAN's so please forgive my lack of detail or technical terms. As a developer I've just completed and put on an existing production system a new application but it would appear to have tipped the scales regarding the performance of the backups being taken from the SAN. As I understand it there's a mirror of the SAN being taken usually constantly at the block-level. However, there seem to be so many new writes to the disk that the SAN mirroring/backup process can no longer keep up. I believe I've narrowed this down to SQL Servers tempdb which exists on a drive that contributes the largest portion of the problem! In fact I think tempdb has be contributing the largest portion of the issues all along regardless of my application! My question therefore is whether the tempdb should ever be mirrored or backed on the SAN and whether anyone else has gone through this sort of pain already? I'm wondering whether it's a best practise to make sure that tempdb is never mirrored on a SAN simply because any writes to it don't need to be saved. This also raises a slightly connected question - is it better to rely on SQL Servers built-in database backups tools (DB in full-recovery mode with full/differential and transaction log backups) or, as is the case with our application, SQL server is in simple recovery mode and never backed up since the SAN is mirrored and backed up? • I can't find my backup for the cpanel in whm/cpanel

Most links I have seen talk of backing up the entire public_html folder (The website runs on a shared host). But in my fresh Joomla installation there are several folders that are in the public_html folder. So which of the folders in the public_html folder are from the content of the website, and which are of the old Joomla framework? I'm afraid that I might overwrite files of the new Joomla framework with the old framework, if copy all the files and folders into the new installation.

• Photo and Video backup [closed]

  Apologies if this is the wrong forum. Please move if necessary I want to back up all my photos and videos online. Some videos are HD and up to 2GB in size. Does anyone know of any good sites? Flcker and Picasca seem the obvious ones but there seem to be limits on size. I have also heard bad things about the Picasca UI. I basically want to remove most of the photos from my laptop HD and then sync with web when I want to download them. Viewing via mobile is not a big thing for me. • Is ignoring clients data during an automatic upgrading acceptable?

  I recently faced a deletion of my calendar and notes data inside a third party application ( Horde ) on my online space. When I told the web hosting provider they replied that they were doing an upgrade to system software (!!) and client third party applications are not within their reach or backup policy. They don't even have a backup of my data. Is this practice acceptable from a web hosting provider, even for an individual clients ? I know that backing up my data is my responsibility but I anticipated that backup copies done by the host would be available when needed.

• Effective way of keeping past projects with their working development environment?

  I find that whenever I want to go run a past project, it will take a long time before I can find it and before I have everything set-up again for it to be able to run. For example, I have python projects I created in Linux, and it depends on software packages that are easily installed in Linux, yet I no longer have the Linux VM I was using. And some of my other projects depend on other variables like web server configuration, PATH variables, sdk, IDE, OS version, device, etc. Does someone have an effective way of handling this issue? As of now I have only concerned myself with keeping the source code backed up yet it is difficult re-establish the working development environment and it is also difficult to keep the working development environment around as well.

• Sharing Large Database Backup Among Team

  I work on a team of three - five developers that work on an ASP.net web application remotely. We currently run a full local database from a recent backup on all of our machines during development. The current backup, compressed, is about 18 GB. I'm looking to see if there's an easier way to keep all of our local copies relatively fresh without each of us individually downloading the 18 GB file over HTTP from our web server on a regular basis. I guess FTP is an option, but it won't speed the process up at all. I'm familiar with torrents and the thought keeps hitting me that something like that would be effective, but I'm unsure of the security or the process.

• How to backup a dev & QA folder website structure?

  A site I just became in charge of uses a really simple two folder structure to host the dev site and the QA site. The sites are hosted on the company servers so I just have the sites' folders mapped on my desktop. I would like to run some kind of backup scheme, but I am finding it hard to think of a way to do this effectively. The problem is that we aren't using any revision control software, and since the servers aren't controlled by me, I don't think I will be able to implement anything like that. Or could I? • SQL Server log backups "stalling"

  I have interited a box running SQL Server 2008 and Windows 2003, and have had a few events where largeish (35GB) log backups "stall", both before and after the installation of SQL 2008 SP1. The server log ships to a standby, so regular log backups are taken at 15 minute intervals. However, after an index reorg causes the log to grow to about 35GB (on a DB with about 17GB of data), the next log backup runs to ~95% completion, then seems to stop. The process shows as suspended, with a wait state of BACKUPIO. CPU, read, and write activity on the SPID also does not change, and the process stays in this state for hours, when normally a backup of this size should complete in about 20 minutes. This server has a single RAID-1 volume, thus the source database files and destination backup files are on the same volume. However, I cannot determine if another process is blocking the backup. The backup SPID cannot be killed, and the only way to terminate the log backup and clear the lock on the backup file is to cycle the SQL Server service. There was one event where the backup terminated completely, with an error that another process had locked the backup file, but no details about what that process was. Can anyone suggest a cause or diagnostic process to this situation?

• System State Backups using NTbackup fail with error 0x800423f4 (relating to volume shadow copy)

  We have a Windows Server 2003 R2 running Service Pack 2. It is a domain controller (Global Catalog) and our main internal DNS server. We run a System State backup of the machine to back up Active Directory information and save the backup to a different server. This server has a single drive (C:), and we do have Shadow Copies enabled for the volume (which are completing successfully). The System State Backup is now failing with the following listed in the backup logs: Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1. "Event Log Writer" has reported an error 0x800423f4. This is part of System State. The backup cannot continue. Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:800423f4 Aborting Backup. The operation did not successfully complete. When doing a vssadmin list writers, we sometimes get the following reported for the Event Log Writer (other times it says that it is in the state of "[1] Stable" with "No error"): Writer name: 'Event Log Writer' Writer Id: {eee8c692-67ed-4250-8d86-390603070d00} Writer Instance Id: {c7194e96-868a-49e5-ba99-89b61977753c} State: [8] Failed Last error: Retryable error We have tried disabling the event log service via the registry, rebooting, deleting the event log files from the drive, then re-enabling the service via the registry and rebooting, but this didn't seem to solve the issue. We also get an error message when in the event viewer when trying to open the log for the "File Replication Service" of "Unable to complete the operation on 'File Replication Service'. The security descriptor structure is invalid." I have searched the error via Google and tried a number of different things, but nothing has seemed to help. Any suggestions on what we might try to get the Event Log Writer to behave would be greatly appreciated!
