  • XBMC using a lot of CPU when fullscreen

    I'm just starting to try out XBMC (from the ubuntu repo) and noticed that it's using a lot of CPU when running fullscreen, even when I'm not playing a movie. There's a definite lag even on the home page with the scrolling footer. I've toggled the option to use it in windowed mode and it seems to be a lot more responsive. The footer lag seems to be gone. Does anyone know why this is happening? I would have thought that running fullscreen would have used less resources.

  • Vim disables ibus IME -- is this a bug?

    I'm using ibus IME to input Japanese text into GVim. I have the following Vim script that I source when GVim starts up: autocmd InsertLeave * :call bug#onInsertLeave() function! bug#onInsertLeave() python << EOT import vim import ibus bus = ibus.Bus() ic = ibus.InputContext(bus, bus.current_input_contxt()) ic.disable() print "bug#onInsertLeave(): exiting" EOT endfunction The line that constructs the InputContext raises the exception: dbus.exception.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Failed: no focused input context This happens under the following conditions: I enter insert mode I insert some Japanese text I exit insert mode If I don't enter any Japanese text through the IME, then the exception is not raised. I've also noticed that if I exit insert mode after entering some Japanese text while the IME is still enabled, then IME input is disabled (I can see the icon change in the taskbar). If I exit insert mode without entering any Japanese text, but while the IME is still enabled, then the IME stays enabled (the icon does not change). It seems like GVim is disabling the IME (or the IME is switching off) in some conditions. Could it be related to the exception? My questions are: Is this a bug? If it is, then whose bug is it? Vim, Ibus, or something else? Are there any ways to work around the exception?     my web site has a lot of "(direct) / (none)" traffic (over 50%) in Google Analytics, but under the "Audience", 100% are new visitors, why is that? I am quite sure most of the Audience should be new visitor, but why so many "(direct) / (none)" traffic? Update: Actually we have launch a new site which this number drop significantly, so I am interested in knowing why the number was so high in the past.

  • What would be the best mean for a gui with a lot of FX in Unity

    The game I am working on (we are in R&D) is based almost exclusively on a windowed gui with a lot of FX (fading, growing, etc). We will also likely need custom widgets (like a sound recording graph). The game will be made with Unity and from what I heard, the default gui system has quite a bad rep, it is too slow for many usages. So, I wondering what would be the best way to do what we need.

  • correct pattern to handle a lot of entities in a game

Then they all basically have a virtual method called "update" that I would class for each entity in my game at every frame. I am assuming that this is a pattern that has a lot of downsides. What are some other ways to manage different "game objects" throughout the game? Are there other well-known patterns for this? My game is a RPG if that changes anything

For some reason Webmaster tools is crawling my website and showing a lot of 404 errors which are from "/_" like additional pages that's i've never created.   • iOS app with a lot of text

    I just asked a question on StackOverflow, but I'm thinking that a part of it belongs here, as questions about design pattern are welcomed by the faq. Here is my situation. I have developed almost completely a native iOS app. The last section I need to implement is all the rules of a sport, so that's a lot of text. It has one main level of sections, divided in subsections, containing a lot of structured text (paragraphs, a few pictures, bulleted/numbered lists, tables). I have absolutely no problem with coding, I'm just looking for advice to improve and make the best design pattern possible for my app. My first shot (the last one so far) was a UITableViewController containing the sections, sending the user to another UITableViewController with the subsections of the selected section, and then one strange last UITableViewController where the cells contain UITextViews, sections header help structure the content, etc. What I would like is your advice on how to improve the structure of this section. I'm perfectly ready to destroy/rebuild the whole thing, I'm really lost in my design here.. As I said on SO, I've began to implement a UIWebView in a UIViewController, showing a html page with JQuery Mobile to display the content, and it's fine. My question is more about the 2 views taking the user to that content. I used UITableViewControllers because that's what seemed the most appropriate for a structured hierarchy like this one. But that doesn't seem like the best solution in term of user experience.. What structure / "view-flow" / kind of presentation would you try to implement in my situation? As always, any help would be greatly appreciated!   • Difference between bug, defect and flaw

    I was reading "Software Security: Building Security In" and in the first chapter I faced with 3 terms: bug, defect and flaw. The author gave a definition for each of them but I couldn't completely understand these. Can someone give me some examples for each term? What is a defect and what is a flaw? I think I know what bug is, a bug is a malfunction of a part of system which produces undesirable result, be it crashing on a wrong input or miscalculating a series of computations. Can someone elaborate more and correct me if I am wrong in this? UPDATE To be more precise in the book I mentioned above, they (the words) are presented in a way to make a distinction, that's why I am asking to know more. In that book there are some examples denoting which sample belongs to what and which category. For example: Buffer overflow is said to be a bug and issues in method overriding (subclassing issues) is being related to flaw category. Again race condition handling issues are considered bugs and Error-handling problems (fails open) are told to be flaws! I want more elaboration on these regards.

    Hi All I am learning Java through BlueJ I would like to add a removeLot method to the Auction Class in BlueJ Chpt 4. This involves also returning the lot with the given number or null if there is no such lot. If you enter , say 5 lots and then use the remove method, this codes removes whichever lot you specify. However if you enter a new lot after using the removeLot method - an internal error message comes up regarding lotnumbering . Any ideas? For example, instead of saying that there is a bug (in the general sense), we'd rather say what type of bug (an error, or enhancement, or improvement, etc.). What names do you use for describing 'bugs'? I found http://www.softwaredevelopment.ca/bugs.shtml which has some pretty good classifications. How do you classify them?

However, I'm not sure as to what the generally accepted etiquette is for bug tracking in cases like this. Obviously, if the system explicitly states to not duplicate and will actively mark new items as duplicates (much in the way the SE sites do), then the answer would be to follow what the system says. But what about when the system doesn't explicitly say that, or a new user can't easily find a place that says with the system's preference is? Is it generally considered better to err on the side of duplication or necromancy? Does this differ depending on whether it's a bug or a feature request?

  • Git bug branching convention

    I've been following the successful Git branching model guide for most of my development. I still wonder if the way I handle bug tickets is correct. My current workflow: Once I accept a bug ticket I will do a git checkout -b bug/{ticket_number}, create a single commit as a fix and then checkout develop and do a git merge --no-ff. I'd love to hear from the experiences of others whether or not I am abusing the --no-ff option in this instance. If I am, could someone suggest a better approach?

  • bug fixing appproach

    I have been working on a project comprising of databases. I recently received a bug report for the remote execution of some queries. Usually you try to find out the actual cause for the bug to occur and then fix it. But sometimes what I do when I'm fed up of doing some research (and can't find suitable information on the internet) is just change the logic, which takes me much less time compared to the other option. Is this approach of mine correct or should I try to fix the original bug involving more R&D?

  • 13.04 - Extenal monitor plugged on laptop HDMI shows image but lags a lot

    It uses an Nvidia GeForce GTS 250M. When I plug in the monitor, it shows some images but with bad FPS and lagging a lot. For example, when I move the mouse pointer, it leaves a trail that vanishes from time to time. I didn't install Nvidia drivers because every time I did this on past versions I ended up with an unbootable system. On past versions I just gave up trying to use the monitor cause it never showed anything regardless of what driver I installed. But since 13.04 ALMOST made it, I'll make another tries. ps.: Works perfectlty on Windows 7/8

  • How to report a crash when there isn't a .crash file

    I am suffering from a bug/crash in Natty, which I have logged in Launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/737928 The response I got back on my bug was a "provide us with a .crash file, or we won't look into it". Not very helpful really, but I can understand that the developers need something to work with. I have checked for this .crash file, which I can provide, but it isn't there. So, my question is, what else can I provide/do in order to get this bug looked at and fixed? It can't be a specific problem as it happens to both my 32bit laptop and my 64bit desktop, both being very different machines, and it is stopping me from connecting to my development & backup network machines so I can't do my work...

  • A lot has happened since last post!!!!!!!!!

    And I mean a lot! First off had two interviews (one was selling insurance) and other installing cable. I have more hope for the cable one. Getting more emails from my job search engines (having problems with going through them and applying for those jobs, I know I can do). It seems the more I apply to, the more job emails pop up in my in box. But at the same time I am fighting feelings of worthlessness (18 months and no job). It is putting a strain on my marriage (We had had blow out over a broken drinking glass since I last posted).     But, at the same time, I am fighting mad about (a figure of speech, really) not having a job. Look just because I am over 55 and have gray hair. It does not mean, my brain is dead or I can not longer trouble shoot a router or circuit or LAN issue. Or that I can do “IT” work at all. And I could prove this if; some one would give me at job. Come on try me for 90 days at min. wage.   I know you will end up keeping me (hope fully at normal pay) around. Is any one hearing me…come on take up the challenge!
