• Use desktop widget to run corporate web application

  So the question is simple: is it possible to set windows desktop to corporate application page (anybody remembers that active desktop thing?) and use it instead of browser (sic!). My thoughts: Windows 7: I can create giant full-screen widget that will show my page. Still have no idea if I will be able to navigate inside it though. Windows Vista: ???. I know there is still a side bar gadget that hosts a browser. Windows XP: create static html page with iframe pointing to corporate app home page. Problem: clicking links on page still opens default browser.

• Bitmap size exceeds VM budget after second load

  This is driving me crazy. I have a game which has a bitmap as the background, this is big so I scale it down and this works fine. However when I navigate to another activity and then reload the game screen it crashes on drawing the background. I am calling recycle on all the bitmaps and setting them to null on onDestroy() but this doesn't help. Any ideas and if not how can I debug the memory to see at which step its growing. I looked at getting the heap but nothing of any size is on there really. Thanks.

• Help ! Flex Local connection

  Hi all , i was building an application that use local connection and listens to another application that also uses local connection , the second application is sort of remote control for the first app. it invokes function of the listening app from outside. anyway , everything works good on local host. BUT once i have put the listening app on a server and try to work it , it does not connect anymore. any idea's? Thanks

• Rapid Prototyping for Embedded Systems

  For doing prototyping on small embedded projects that require physical motion, what hardware prototyping tools are available? For my projects, I tend to spend more time finding parts (i.e. wood, aluminum, etc.) and making the proper cuts, measurements, and connections than writing the software and configuring the electrical hardware. Are there any affordable products that will enable me to create physical hardware that is strong enough to support motion? If not, what techniques or tools are available to help develop the physical hardware more quickly? Currently, I typically build my projects from wood and plastic scraps that I have lying around. What types of materials enable you to prototype more quickly? CLARIFICATION: By motion, I mean something that has to bear stress like a robot arm powered by a servo motor and could handle moving or carrying 1-2 lbs.

• relational type operation on key value storage

  in my objects table i have id | type | parent | order | created and then in my data table i have object_id | key | value i want to get object of type 'x' where key 'y' === 'z' in the most optimal way possible. ie. get user where slug === 'jonny' i'm currently doing it with joins, because i'm doing this in mysql as a quick test. but i'll be moving to redis or a similar key/value storage system so obviously that won't work.

Sure enough, a quick check of the Independent Oracle User Group's website tells us a bit about the Real World Performance Day event, but no formal agenda? This was one of the questions I posed to Tom Kyte (one of the main presenters) in our recent podcast. Tom tells us that this isn't your traditional event where one speaker follows another with loads of slides.   I have a Box2D project that is about to create a view where the user looks from the Sky onto Water. Or perhaps on a bathtub filled with water or something like this. The Object which holds the fluid actually does not matter, what matters is the movement of the bodies, because they should move like drops of grease on a soup, or wood on water, I can even imagine the the fluid is mercurial, extreme heavy and "lazy". How can I manipulate the bodies (every frame or time by time) to make them move like this? I started with randomly manipulation their linear velocity, but I turned out that this not very smooth and looks quite hard. Is it a better idea to check their velocity and apply impulses?   I would like to add sound effects to a basic 2D game. For example, a stone sphere is rolling on wood surface. Let's say I have a 2 second audio recording of this. How could I use the sample to add sound for an arbitrary duration ? So far I have two solutions in mind: a/ record the sound for an amount of time that is greater than the maximum expected duration, and play only a part of it; b/ extract a small portion of the sample and play it in a loop for the duration of the move; however I'm not sure if it makes sense with an audio wave.

• Is it a bad practice to include all the enums in one file and use it in multiple classes?

  I'm an aspiring game developer, I work on occasional indie games, and for a while I've been doing something which seemed like a bad practice at first, but I really want to get an answer from some experienced programmers here. Let's say I have a file called enumList.h where I declare all the enums I want to use in my game: // enumList.h enum materials_t { WOOD, STONE, ETC }; enum entity_t { PLAYER, MONSTER }; enum map_t { 2D, 3D }; // and so on. // Tile.h #include "enumList.h" #include <vector> class tile { // stuff }; The main idea is that I declare all enums in the game in 1 file, and then import that file when I need to use a certain enum from it, rather than declaring it in the file where I need to use it. I do this because it makes things clean, I can access every enum in 1 place rather than having pages openned solely for accessing one enum. Is this a bad practice and can it affect performance in any way?

  Hi, Take for example the list (L): John, John, John, John, Jon We are to presume one item is to be correct (e.g. John in this case), and give a probability it is correct. First (and good!) attempt: MostFrequentItem(L).Count / L.Count (e.g. 4/5 or 80% likelihood) But consider the cases: John, John, Jon, Jonny John, John, Jon, Jon I want to consider the likelihood of the correct item being John to be higher in the first list! I know I have to count the SecondMostFrequent Item and compare them. Any ideas? This is really busting my brain! Thx, Andrew
