• SPARC T4-4 Delivers World Record First Result on PeopleSoft Combined Benchmark

  Oracle's SPARC T4-4 servers running Oracle's PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 combined online and batch benchmark achieved World Record 18,000 concurrent users while executing a PeopleSoft Payroll batch job of 500,000 employees in 43.32 minutes and maintaining online users response time at < 2 seconds. This world record is the first to run online and batch workloads concurrently. This result was obtained with a SPARC T4-4 server running Oracle Database 11g Release 2, a SPARC T4-4 server running PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 application server and a SPARC T4-2 server running Oracle WebLogic Server in the web tier. The SPARC T4-4 server running the application tier used Oracle Solaris Zones which provide a flexible, scalable and manageable virtualization environment. The average CPU utilization on the SPARC T4-2 server in the web tier was 17%, on the SPARC T4-4 server in the application tier it was 59%, and on the SPARC T4-4 server in the database tier was 35% (online and batch) leaving significant headroom for additional processing across the three tiers. The SPARC T4-4 server used for the database tier hosted Oracle Database 11g Release 2 using Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) for database files management with I/O performance equivalent to raw devices. This is the first three tier mixed workload (online and batch) PeopleSoft benchmark also processing PeopleSoft payroll batch workload. The PeopleSoft HRSS benchmark kit is a Oracle standard benchmark kit run by all platform vendors to measure the performance. It's an OLTP benchmark where DB SQLs are moderately complex. The results are certified by Oracle and a white paper is published. PeopleSoft HR SS defines a business transaction as a series of HTML pages that guide a user through a particular scenario. Users are defined as corporate Employees, Managers and HR administrators. The benchmark consist of 14 scenarios which emulate users performing typical HCM transactions such as viewing paycheck, promoting and hiring employees, updating employee profile and other typical HCM application transactions. All these transactions are well-defined in the PeopleSoft HR Self-Service 9.1 benchmark kit. This benchmark metric is the weighted average response search/save time for all the transactions. The PeopleSoft 9.1 Payroll (North America) benchmark demonstrates system performance for a range of processing volumes in a specific configuration. This workload represents large batch runs typical of a ERP environment during a mass update. The benchmark measures five application business process run times for a database representing large organization. They are Paysheet Creation, Payroll Calculation, Payroll Confirmation, Print Advice forms, and Create Direct Deposit File. The benchmark metric is the cumulative elapsed time taken to complete the Paysheet Creation, Payroll Calculation and Payroll Confirmation business application processes. The benchmark metrics are taken for each respective benchmark while running simultaneously on the same database back-end. Specifically, the payroll batch processes are started when the online workload reaches steady state (the maximum number of online users) and overlap with online transactions for the duration of the steady state. Key Points and Best Practices Two Oracle PeopleSoft Domain sets with 200 application servers each on a SPARC T4-4 server were hosted in 2 separate Oracle Solaris Zones to demonstrate consolidation of multiple application servers, ease of administration and performance tuning. Each Oracle Solaris Zone was bound to a separate processor set, each containing 15 cores (total 120 threads). The default set (1 core from first and third processor socket, total 16 threads) was used for network and disk interrupt handling. This was done to improve performance by reducing memory access latency by using the physical memory closest to the processors and offload I/O interrupt handling to default set threads, freeing up cpu resources for Application Servers threads and balancing application workload across 240 threads. • Ubuntu, Gnome, PAM and ecryptfs

  I would like to have a directory accessible to a couple of users, and not readable by maintenance types ... I can do what I want using ecryptfs and a password known only to the "couple of users" in question, who then can mount the directory and use as they see fit. I would love to be able to automate that process and unlock the directory at login - again, only for the "couple users" in question, without asking a password. Gnome-keyring is able to store passphrases/passwords encrypted; and, apparently, if I could get a key identity to ecryptfs, Gnome PAM modules would allow the key with that identity to be unlocked, and the directory could be mounted. Alas, I have found no way to go from point A (Gnome PAM keyring module) to point B (use the unlocked key in ecryptfs). Another use of the same mechanism would allow to build a "key escrow" mechanism, where keys to encrypted volumes are safekept with, e.g., HR; so that company information in encrypted directories can be recovered if you pass under the proverbial bus.

  I am new to linux. I was using fedora and now switching to Ubuntu for a try. On Fedora my wireless network card was working OK from the OS install (I didnt had to do anything for it to work) On Ubuntu, with the lspci -v command, I get: Network controller: Ralink corp. • Fan running constantly on a Dell D420 laptop

  I'm running latest Ubuntu 12.04 beta on a Dell D420 laptop. The fan is spinning almost constantly - even after turning the PC off, letting it cool down, and then turning it back on, the fan will turn on after some idle time. Not to mention any CPU work. The CPU temps are normal, in range of 50-55 idle, and up to 70 with some load. It wouldn't be an issue, but the same PC running Fedora, or Arch Linux, had a much more modest fan profile - the temps were managed while you seldom heard the fan. To counter the problem, I currently use i8k tools, set manual temperature thresholds which seemed to have worked, but the i8kmon has a tendency to cycle the fan between lower and higher state within aboutin a second intervals - which is extremely annoying. As far as I can tell I did not run any special software (beside laptop-mode-tools), or any additional kernel modules when running Arch Linux and I can't tell about Fedora.

  I am looking for a specific news portal CMS. I know all the major "general" CMS (like WordPress, Drupal or Joomla) and even the less known ones (like TYPO3, Expression Engine, Text Pattern or Concrete5). I'm already working with a Drupal distribution called OpenPublish and another WordPress installation to determine which would be better, but these are more of a Plan B. I would like to work directly with a CMS that was build exactly for this kind of tasks specific to a news / media portal. It doesn't matter if the CMS is commercial (however, I don't want to pay a monthly fee) or free, but I need to be able to use it on my own server / hosting and I need to be able to access it's source code (not to modify it, but to integrate it with future plugins / modules). If you know any CMS that qualifies for this job, please let me know. In the last few days I was all over Google but I couldn't anything worth mentioning.

  I installed LIMBO from the Humble Bundle V and as far as I am aware, this has wine packaged with it (I also installed the latest from the repo's in case is was because of that). • 11.10 AMD64 alternate installer has broken packages?

  I'm installing Ubuntu 11.10 from the alternate install ISO because I need to use LVM. Unfortunately, at some point the installer fails because it can't install libpurple0 and ubuntu-desktop because they depend on libsasl2-modules but it's not installable somehow. It also has the same error for xserver-xorg-video-all but I think I could probably live without that one. Kind of annoying that this is broken, I'm guessing maybe if I had internet it would work but right now I'm on a campus network with a captive portal so I can't actually get a network connection without using a browser to log in. Just thought someone should know or maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'm going to try installing 11.04 alternate and then upgrading I guess.

Will that affect SEO or any other advantage over the respective social networking site (here for example facebook and google plus)?

• LSP vs OCP / Liskov Substitution VS Open Close

  I am trying to understand the SOLID principles of OOP and I've come to the conclusion that LSP and OCP have some similarities (if not to say more). the open/closed principle states "software entities (classes, modules, functions, etc.) should be open for extension, but closed for modification". LSP in simple words states that any instance of Foo can be replaced with any instance of Bar which is derived from Foo and the program will work the same very way. I'm not a pro OOP programmer, but it seems to me that LSP is only possible if Bar, derived from Foo does not change anything in it but only extends it. That means that in particular program LSP is true only when OCP is true and OCP is true only if LSP is true. That means that they are equal. Correct me if I'm wrong. I really want to understand these ideas. Great thanks for an answer.
