• Windows 2003 Server Suddenly Drops Connections to everything but PING and port 80 (webserver)

  Hi, I'm running a Windows 2003 Dedicated server, and the box has been rock solid for more than 2 years now. Just recently, I have had an issue where after a certain ammount of time the server will just stop accepting connections on all ports except 80, and still responds to pings. If you surf to a static HTML page on the box, you can display it. If you pull up a PHP file that has an outside database connection, it fails. RDP refuses to connect, and LogMeIn reports that "The connection was reset" The only fix at this time is to have the provider physically reboot my box to correct the issue. The event log doesn't seem to be leaving helpful messages, and I am at a lost to what is causing this error since I have not installed any new software in months on it. Any tips or help would be appreciated to tracking down this issue. I don't mind updating the question as responses come in, I just do not know where to start troubleshooting because it seems random at this time.

• Gesture Based NetBeans Tip Infrastructure

  All/most/many gestures you make in NetBeans IDE are recorded in an XML file in your user directory, "var/log/uigestures", which is what makes the Key Promoter I outlined yesterday possible. The idea behind it is for analysis to be made possible, when you periodically pass the gestures data back to the NetBeans team. See http://statistics.netbeans.org for details. Since the gestures in the 'uigestures' file are identifiable by distinct loggers and other parameters, there's no end to the interesting things that one is able to do with it. While the NetBeans team can see which gestures are done most frequently, e.g., which kinds of projects are created most often, thus helping in prioritizing new features and bugs, etc, you as the user can, depending on who and how the initiative is taken, directly benefit from your collected data, too. Tim Boudreau, in a recent article, mentioned the usefulness of hippie completion. So, imagine that whenever you use code completion, a tip were to appear reminding you about hippie completion. And then you'd be able to choose whether you'd like to see the tip again or not, etc, i.e., customize the frequency of tips and the types of tips you'd like to be shown. And then, it could be taken a step further. The tip plugin could be set up in such a way that anyone would be able to register new tips per gesture. For example, maybe you have something very interesting to share about code completion in NetBeans. So, you'd create your own plugin in which there'd be an HTML file containing the text you'd like to have displayed whenever you (or your team members, or your students, maybe?) use code completion. Then you'd register that HTML file in plugin's layer file, in a subfolder dedicated to the specific gesture that you're interested in commenting on. The same is true, not just for NetBeans IDE, but for anyone creating their applications on top of the NetBeans Platform, of course.

• ldap samba user access issue

  I have a samba share that is on the LAN. It is auth'd via ldap. Users access file system via ad windows shares. There are shortcuts in directories that point to dir's on samba. Typically a user will click the shortcut to the smb dir, and will be met with a permission denied error. Upon closing explorer and reopening, it will work. DNS is handled by the domain controller, and that is the only server any of the machines use for DNS. Nothing in eventvwr. Only see successful auth entries in samba log. Any ideas?

• Windows freezes, showing a random color or pattern

  I have a PC with windows 7, and I'm experiencing random freezes with increasing frequency. After some time (from 30 minutes to a few hours) the screen will shows a random color or pattern (vertical lines) and nothing works anymore, I need to reboot manually. I've checked the events log, but nothing is shown except for the unexpected reboot. I've tested the RAM with Memtest86+ 4.20, and the graphics card with FurMark 1.10.3, no errors have been found. I've updated the graphic drivers and openned the case to remove dust, but the issue is still there. Also, the problem doesn't seem to arise when I'm playing games fullscreen, but when I'm surfing the web, using itunes, or coding. My hardware is as follows : intel core i5 750 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics card, ASUSTeK P7P55D motherboard, two 2Gb KINGSTON DDR3 ram sticks, 2 SATA hard drives, a Netgear dongle for wifi.

I am connected to my workplace through VPN. i can map the drive when I use the administrator account on the server. But the log on is unsuccessful if I use my personal account on the server to map the drive. My personal account on the server is part of Administrators group. Can any one help me with this?

• New functionality in TFS Build Manager &ndash; Managing Triggers and Build Resources

  Yesterday we pushed out a new release (August 2012) of the Community TFS Build Extension, including a new version of the Community TFS Build Manager (1.0.4.6) The two big new features in the Build Manager in this release are: Set Triggers It is now possible to select one or more build definitions and update the triggers for them in one simple operation: You’ll note that we have started collapsing the context menu a bit, the list of commands are getting long! When selecting the Trigger command, you’ll see a dialog where the options should be self-explanatory: The only thing missing here is the Scheduled trigger option, you’ll have to do that using Team Explorer for now.   Manage Build Resources The other feature is that it is now possible to view the build controllers and agents in your current collection and also perform some actions against them. The new functionality is available by select the Build Resources item in the drop down menu: Selecting this, you’ll see a (sort of) hierarchical view of the build controllers and their agents: In this view you can quickly see all the resources and their status. You can also view the build directory of each build agent and the tags that are associated with them. On the action menu, you can enable and disable both agents and controllers (several at a time), and you can also select to remove them. By selecting Manage, you’ll be presented with the standard Manage Controller dialog from Visual Studio where you can set the rest of the properties. Hopefully we’ll be able to implement most of the existing functionality so that we can remove that menu option Our plan is to add more functionality to this view, such as adding new agents/controllers, restarting build service hosts, maybe view diagnostic information such as disk space and error logs.   Hope you’ll find the new functionality useful.   Maybe is a very basic question, but I can't find the exact terms to Google for it and find the concrete answer to my doubt. Suppose we have several PCs in which individual employees work. One of them has an extremely powerful CPU, and it's very useful to use that computer to perform heavy computations, but go there and set up your task means its user has to stop working for a while. Is it possible to allow a secondary user account to remotly log in, for example via Remote Desktop, and work with a full user environment, while the main user keeps working under his user session? I've used remote desktop many times in the past, but it always blocked current user session, or even terminated it. Lots of thanks in advance guys.

• Winlogon Application Error

  This error is happening to 6 out of 32 computers. I have created a base image from scratch using Ghost Enterprise, but error still shows on the same machines. It happens at the log on prompt and after doing a soft reset the message goes away, but it comes back eventually. -Error message- The Instruction at "0X74eF400e" referenced Memory at "0X00000000" The memory could not be "Written". Winlogon.exe - Application Error Any reason why this is happening? I have tried to run a memTest but everything shows okay.

• Route a specific user's traffic via VPN but still allow local networking

  So, I want to route certain traffic via a VPN connection and the rest via my normal Internet connection. I want to run several different programs and most of them don't support binding to a specific network interface (tun0 in my case). I've managed to send a specific user's traffic via the VPN following the answers given here: iptables - Target to route packet to specific interface? But unfortunately, when I run a server that connects to the Internet and has a web interface running on a local IP (127.0.0.1/192.168.0.*), all the Internet traffic correctly goes via tun0, but I'm unable to connect to the web interface from a local IP as a different user. When I log in as the VPN-ified user, I can access services running on local IPs, but other users/machines can't access any servers I start. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

• Windows 8 Remote Desktop only allows one user at a time?

  I tried connecting to Windows 8 using its built-in Remote Desktop feature, but for some inexplicable reason, it requires that no users are logged in on the target machine before a remote user can log in. This has never been a problem with rdesktop on Unixen; I could rdesktop from as many machines as I wanted and any logged-in users would never notice a thing. What's the problem with Windows? Any way to allow concurrent local and remote logins to a Windows 8 machine without hacks or cracks? The "guides" on how to do this that show up in the Google results all suggest replacing a system DLL with a hacked one, but that's not acceptable.

• http request terminating early

  I noticed that on some of my sites, images were occasionally not getting downloaded fully. After a bit of investigation it appears that it is not restricted to images - .css, .js etc were also occasionally terminating early. The faults appear to be random. When I use the debug/proxy tool Fiddler2 reports that fewer bytes have been received than were requested. Firebug reports "Image corrupt or truncated". Obviously this is mainly a concern between me and my hosting company. However despite many emails they have not been able to get to the bottom of it. Transfer to another hosting company is obviously an option but is really a last resort. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before or can anyone suggest what might be causing it. Or any apache setting or something that I can ask them to check out. Will apache log this kind of error - they havent been able to provide me with any logs, but if I know exactly where things have been logged, maybe I can prompt them in to action.

• Keyboard and mouse/touchpad wont work in 11.10

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 onto my Fujitsu Lifebook N5010 Laptop yesterday and all seemed good up until this morning. My key board and mouse/touchpad no longer work. I can, however, plug in a usb mouse and that works so I am able to shut the laptop off. With the usb mouse plugged in I still can't use the keyboard so the only thing the mouse is good for is shutting the system down. When I first boot the system the mouse/touchpad and keyboard will work long enough so that I can log in my password but then after about 20 seconds or so the mouse/touchpad and keyboard stop working. I have searched the internet for answers and haven't found anything that is working for me. Someone suggested I type a particular command into the terminal but not real sure how I do that without a keyboard. And going out to buy a usb keyboard (assuming that would work) and usb mouse still doesn't fix the problem. Anybody have any suggestions I would REALLY appreciate it. I love Ubuntu but this is just not good.

• Excel Countif external date

  I am making an Excel 2010 spreadsheet to log support calls, services, and installations that each member would fill out. Due to being paid by job rather than by hour, there is a need for it to count each of these ("Call", "Service", "Install") there is in any given time span. The entry of the data itself would be in Sheet 1, and then a 'splash screen' of sorts would be in Sheet 2. Here I would like to be able to put a date range and it would display how many of each there is. I already can do the COUNTIF statement, =COUNTIF(Activity!$B:$B,"Call") but I don't know how to: a) Add in the prerequisite for a date so it only gets "Calls" within a certain time frame. b) Take the date it looks for from a cell on the splash screen.

• no boot option after install ubuntu 12.04 LTS using cd

  im facing a problem. after installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using boot from CD, when reboot there is no boot option to choose the OS. i directly log in to my Windows 7. before this im having an issue with the 'nomodeset' if not mistaken. after tick [x] on the nomodeset, i can install my Ubuntu, and stuck again at choosing the partition. so i had done 2 partitions for ubuntu, 1 partition for ubuntu ( ext3, mount /) and the other 1 for swap. then i can proceed until finished the installation. and after the system want to reboot. it take some times and just stuck at the screen doing nothing. not rebooting at all. i force to shutdown then restart again then directly go into windows 7 without boot option. in win7 the partitions for ubuntu is gone. i had tried the boot-repair thing and still doesn't help. it just show up the _ (terminal thing i guess). i typed boot repair and still the same. im using acer aspire 4736z. please anybody help me with this issue.

• Firewall blocks outgoing email

  On my Debian server running a Django website, I have an error when I need to send an email. The error received is Exception Type: gaierror Exception Value: [Errno -2] Name or service not known Exception Location: /usr/lib/python2.6/socket.py in create_connection, line 547 You can see the full error log here. After testing, it seems it is my firewall that blocks the request. You can see my iptable file (/etc/init.d/firewall). I think the problem comes from the two commented lines that were supposed to accepts all established connections. When I uncomment them, I have an error iptables: No chain/target/match by that name. • OpenVPN on port 53

  I have an openvpn server setup on UDP port 53 on a public IP. All the connecting clients gets pushed external DNS servers such as 8.8.8.8 and opendns. Sometimes the resolution stops working on the connected vpn clients and I get strange packets in the openvpn log. Now my question is why is that? When a VPN client, let's say 192.168.1.22 does a DNS query that query should go to 8.8.8.8:53 and then an UDP response packet should be sent back to 192.168.1.22 on a high UDP port. Any ideas? • Getting a Non-Genuine windows message on a Genuin Windows 7

  I have a Genuin Win7 enterprise on my Laptop. A few hours ago when I wanted to log into windows it did not accept my Password. I used the safe mode and it accepted the password I was using before this new password. It is the laptop for work and we have a changing password policy for every three months, so the pasword that I could use in SAFE MODE was the password I had for the last previous threee months. ... after that I used SYSTEM RESTORE and it reveretd it back to Yesterday ... so this time I could loging successfully with my current password. BUT It shows me a message that I am a victim of software counterfeiting and when I restarted the windows again and logged into windows, this time it is just a black desktop. weird...any ideas?

  I know how to have six symbols on one key thanks to this question: Xmodmap: Six characters to one key? However, when I have two layouts and switch them, weird things happen. I have the following (well, different, but this is easier to talk about) line in my xmodmap: keycode 31 = a A b B c C When I log in, everything works as you would expect. Pressing key 31 give a, with Shift A, with AltGr c and C respectively and with ISO_Level3_Shift. However, when I change the layout, key 31 gives me b and B with shift and c and C with AltGr. This is on Ubuntu 11.10 under Ubuntu. Does anybody undestand what is happening? Could I restrict xmodmap to just one layout?

• Windows Internet Connection Issue (HELP)

  I have a windows 8 hp dual booting ubuntu. When i log onto windows i cant get on the internet... But skype and other applications can just now webpages in a browser what so ever (this is on windows 8). But on ubuntu i have no internet issues at all. From what i see right now its only the browsers in windows 8 that cant get the internet, and ive tried all the browsers i had (chrome, ie, firefox) and they cant connect but in the win8 notification area it says im connected. I can even ping via cmd. HELP! Thanks. Whats not working is that i cant get access the internet through the windows 8 broswer.

• Password not accepted when resuming from sleep

  My HP Pavilion dv-series notebook will not accept the user account password for the logged in user when resuming from sleep - message returned is Incorrect Password. Simply selecting the Switch User option reloads the login screen and allows me to log in as the same user with the same password that was originally rejected. And, yes I've tried it more than one (hundred) times in case you were thinking it's just a case of slippery fingers. Another interesting point is that it appears to be independent of the software running on the machine. Since the issue first appeared, I have done two clean installs where all HD partitions were wiped and new ones created during fresh installation of the OS. The first such clean install was of Ubuntu (Lucid) 10.04 amd-64, the second of Win 7 Pro 64 (from boxed disc and activated post install). Exactly the same symptoms, described above, are exhibited on both platforms. Have engaged in significant amount of Googling an come up empty so any ideas are welcome.

• Cannot Login as root

  At my work we ship our product on pre-installed servers as a software/hardware package. We are using open SUSE 10.3 for the OS and we setup and we always log in with the root user to do maintenance on the box. Recently we just had box returned to us that the customer said the could not longer connect to the box through the network interface. So when I started to work on the box I run into the this problem: At the command prompt to login i type the user name "root" and hit enter. Then even before it asks me for a password I get "Login incorrect". I have never seen this behavior before and could not find any information about it online. Does anybody know what is going on? • how do I fix 12.04 which has crashed after the latest update

  I added a new drive to my system because the old one was full and stopped. I installed 12.04 at the same time, onto the new drive using a flash disk while off line. The system performs fine on 12.04 from the flash disk and it booted from the new drive OK and I was able to recover all my old data. The updater suggested that I update, so I went ahead and did so. At the end of which it wanted to reboot. I went ahead but on reboot I get to the log in prompt and then the whole system crashes. It tries to recover and then performs a bug report during which it tells me that a whole bunch of files are out of date (these would be the new ones I just updated!) and the screen goes black. Game over. I've tried to reboot several times ... same result. I can boot off the flash drive OK. How do I restore the system I had before the update, without over writing all my hard earned recovered data? Or how do I identify the "new updates" that are causing me grief?

• Someone tried to hack my Node.js server, need to understand a GET request in the logs

  Alright, so I left my Node.js server alone for a while and came back to find some really interesting stuff in the logs. Apparently some moron from China or Poland tried to hack my server using directory traversal and what not, while it seems though he did not succeed I am unable understand few entries in the log. This is the output of a "hohup.out" file. The attack starts, apparently he is trying to find out some console entry in my server. All of which fail and return a 404. How did the hacker even manage to send a GET request to my server such that "http://www.google.com" shows up in the log while my server is simply an API that works on relative URLs such as "/api/login". And, while I looked up the OPTIONS, TRACE and PROPFIND HTTP requests that my server has logged it would be great if someone could explain what exactly was the hacker trying to achieve by using these verbs? Also what in the world does "[90m [32m [90m1ms - 240b[0m" mean? The "ms" makes sense, probably milliseconds for the request, rest I am unable to understand. Thank you!
