  • How can i update Preview.app from the command line without loosing focus on OSX ?

    Hello, i want to update Preview.app in the background from the command line without loosing focus of my current window. I know that i can use the following to open/update the view of a file, but than i loose focus to the Preview.app. open -a Preview foo.pdf I guess there might be some clever Apple Script commands to do so but so far i didn't find the right one. Alternatively i would be interested into transfering the focus back to my current app directly after the update. I need this in order to update Preview.app's view of a pdf through a vi autocmd after i update the pdf according to changes in a tex file i am editing. Here is an example of what i want to achive but using Ubuntu and evince.

  • Prevent registry changes by users

    Background: I run a small computer lab of 10 computers using Windows 7 x64 Enterprise. Our users are set up as limited users. For additional restrictions, I set up local group policy for non-administrators using the microsoft management console. Problem: Recently, I found out that some of these restrictions had been removed. Reviewing the settings MMC and in ntuser.pol showed that the settings should still be in place. However, the related registry settings were missing in ntuser.dat. I already have registry editing disabled in the GPO (though not in silent mode). Question: What is the best way to deal with this situation? Should I look into preventing registry setting changes? Should I set up registry auditing to found out how these keys are getting changed in the first place? Or should I give up the ghost and write some kind of logon script that enforces registry values if they've been change? Any other ideas?

    Hello, I am trying to deploy an app to a fresh Ubuntu 10 installation using Passenger 2.2.15, Rails 2.3.5, Ruby 1.8.7, and Apache 2.2.14. However, even with a default rails app (sudo rails defaultapp), I am receiving the following error: "no such file to load -- initializer". I'm not sure which files you might need copies of in order to diagnose this problem, so I'll copy a few here and hope that it will help.   • Enable roaming profile from group policy

    I've had a reasonable look around the AD policies but am I right in saying the only place that you can enable & define the group policy location is by editing the user, i.e. there isn't a group policy setting to (say) "Set the profile location to \myserver\users\%username%\profile" for all users in group XYZ? I suspect this might be because of chicken & egg, i.e. group policy is applied after the profile has been loaded and therefore can't specify the location. Cheers, Rob.

  • How to play 24 fps video smoothly on a 60Hz display?

    I use mpc-hc to play videos on Win7 x64. With the default settings (#1), video playback is great most of the time. But for panning shots, playback is not smooth. I stepped through the video frame by frame and found that the panning movement is smooth (e.g. each frame shifts horizontally by 10 pixels), so the problem is how the 23.976 fps video is interpolated to 60Hz. The judder looks like what would be caused by a "2:3 pulldown", where the frames are played unevenly like: frame 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, etc (#2) Using "optimal renderer settings" (#3) instead of the default disables the Aero theme and causes tearing. Setting my LCD display to 50Hz may have improved the judder slightly (but I can't really tell). My display does not support 24Hz or 48Hz, and forcing them in the Nvidia control panel gives blurry screen. I've tried other video players (VLC and KMPlayer), the ReClock Directshow Filter, video files from different sources (#4), turning on/off DXVA, and a computer with a different GPU, but the judder in the playback is similar. None of them solved the problem. So, how can I play 23.976 or 24 fps video smoothly on a 60Hz display? I think a video player could make the video smoother by doing linear interpolation, such as: 1. 100% frame 1 2. 60% frame 1 + 40% frame 2 3. 20% frame 1 + 80% frame 2 4. 80% frame 2 + 20% frame 3 5. 40% frame 2 + 60% frame 3 6. 100% frame 3 7. 60% frame 3 + 40% frame 4 .. etc Can any existing video player do this? (#2) This example converts a 24 fps video into 30 fps (#3) View Renderer settings Reset Reset to optimal renderer settings (#4) The files I have are all H.264 mkv files, but I don't think the file format/encoding matters.

Topology Facts ESXi5 version is 5.0.0.504890 VM has the latest Vmware Tools installed VM is using E1000 network driver Physical box has Win Srv 2008 R2 as the OS CrystalDiskMark says the drive on physical box can read/write 100MB/s vCenter is another vm on esx both vm and physical box are showing 1Gbps link speed Configuration Networking shows vmnic0 as 1000 Full NTttcp is a client/server tool from Microsoft for measuring pure network throughput Here's what I've done so far: Test1: VM is running Filezilla FTP Server (default settings, one user account made) Physical box is running Filezilla FTP Client (default settings) Physical box is uploading a big file to FTP server Transfer speed (as observed by Windows Task Manager on both machines): ~11MB/s (bad) Physical box is downloading that file from FTP server Transfer speed (as observed by Windows Task Manager on both machines): still ~11MB/s (bad) Could it be disk performance issue?     I have an Amazon EC2 instance of Windows Server 2008 where some genius managed to disable the network connection so that the instance is now isolated in its own little universe. I can shut down the instance and edit the "C:\" drive volume by attaching it to another running instance. This is equivalent to removing the system drive from a dead machine and attaching it to another computer to edit the files. Question: Where is the network connection enabled / disabled setting stored? If I can tweak this setting by editing the registry or a file to re-enable the network connection, I can then resurrect my Amazon server.

I set in PHP : mbstring.language=UTF-8 mbstring.internal_encoding=UTF-8 mbstring.http_input=UTF-8 mbstring.http_output=UTF-8 mbstring.detect_order=auto But each time there is a $ in the password (i have one for the root of mysql + other script) the password won't work. For example, I just removed the $ in the password for a script, and it worked. When i connect @root on mysql via phpmyadmin : don't work When i connect @root via PHP : works What can i do for this problem please ?

    This is really puzzling. I have lots of videos that were stored using Mac OS, and now I have to edit them on Windows XP. I copied files using HFSExplorer. Editing software refuses to open the files with their current names, and so far I have not found a way to batch rename all the files. Names of the files look like this: clip-2009-10-01 21;26;00.mov But I suspect in OSX the time was 21:26:00. I would like to replace the space with an underscore, and semicolons with dash. I've tried several bulk rename applications, with ; and :, but in vain. Also I've tried rename.pl, but also in vain.

When we then run top to see how much memory Varnish is using, it only shows that it is using 763m, although we've set it to be allowed to use 1200m. Any ideas of what the problem can be?

  • SQL Error (1064) when importing data from SQL file

    I have a MySQL database, which was originally set up with the default latin1 character set and latin1_swedish_ci collation. I was using the database like this for sometime, until I noticed strange characters on my production web site, which is powered by a database exported from my development machine. At this point, I changed the default character set of the database and tables to utf8 and the collation to utf8_unicode_ci, converted the latin1 data inside each table to utf8 (using the 'convert data' option) and exported the database as a single SQL file using HeidiSQL. When the resulting SQL file is opened in Notepad++, several characters are rendered incorrectly. For example, en dashes (-) are displayed as – and e with accent (é) are displayed as é. I changed the encoding of the file from ANSI to UTF-8 (using the encoding menu option in Notepad++) and the offending characters are rendered correctly. I saved the new utf8-encoded SQL file and attempted to import the contents into the MySQL database on my production server. The import process fails with following error: /* SQL Error (1064): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '?# -------------------------------------------------------- # Host: ' at line 1 */ /* Error with snippets directory: The specified path was not found */ The head of the SQL file: # -------------------------------------------------------- # Host: 127.0.0.1 # Server version: 5.1.33-community # Server OS: Win32 # HeidiSQL version: 6.0.0.3773 # Date/time: 2011-04-20 09:48:36 # -------------------------------------------------------- It chokes on the first line of the file, which is commented out. Why is this happening? I didn't have a problem loading data from SQL files until I changed the character set and collation of the database. I came up with an ugly workaround to this problem by performing following steps: Export database as single SQL file using HeidiSQL Open resulting file in Notepad++ and convert from ANSI to UTF-8 encoding Create new empty file in Notepad++, paste in UTF-8 and save file normally What am I missing here?

    I am trying to use Ctrl+ws to split a window in vim. However it is not working in my case. I opened a file using vim filename. Then I pressed Ctrl+ws. But as soon as I press just Ctrl+w it clears the viewport and I could see my shell display before vim opened the file. I mean the view port is replaced by the content just before the file was opened. However, I am still editing the file with vim. Suggestions?

    I am having issues with the SSL document root of my vhosts configuration. Http sees to work fine and navigates to the root directory and publishes the page fine - DocumentRoot /var/www/html/websites/ssl.domain.co.uk/ (as specified in my vhost config) However, https seems to be looking for files in the main apache document root found further up the httpd.conf file, and is not being overwritten by the vhost config. (I assume that vhost config does overwrite the default doc root?). DocumentRoot: The directory out of which you will serve your documents. By default, all requests are taken from this directory, but symbolic links and aliases may be used to point to other locations. DocumentRoot "/var/www/html/websites/" Here is my config, I am quite a new Linux guy so any advise is appreciated on why this is happening!?   • MacOS creates a new mount on AFP path calls

    Hi Folks, following scenario: In my webapp, my customers are using Firefox as target browser. They have the need to open afp:// folders via Javascript. To make a long story short, this really works. You need to setup Firefox with about:config and set the value network.protocol-handler.external.afp to true. What happens then, the operating system (OSX) takes care of that path and it correctly opens a Finder window. The problem: OSX does create a new mount every time. It cannot distinct between afp://host/path/111 and afp://host/path/222 for instance. Furthermore, even if the afp path is 100% identical a new mount is created. It looks like this is the default behavior from OSX regardless of Firefox. So, is there any chance I can tell OSX not to create a new mount for some sub directorys which should get access over afp:// ? update: It looks like, there are OSX applications which can change the default behavior for network protocols. So you can change "somewhere" which application OSX should call for a protocol. If that is true, wouldn't it be possible to create a script which just opens the local path without a afp:// prefix ? The question here is, where is that configuration (?) to tell OSX which application to use for specific protocol. Any help welcome!

    When I try to log on to my laptop, which runs Ubuntu 9.10, the server rejects my login attempts. Why it's not possible to login even if selinux is in permissive mode? Any suggestions? I'd start by trying to figure out why sshd isn't running in sshd_t (it seems to be running in sysadm_t). Do you know why this prevents the user from logging in through ssh even if selinux is set to permissive?? Ok, so the million dollar question is "where do I set 'init_upstart=1'"? It's not clear from context which configuration file needs to be edited, and I'm not at all familiar with SELinux configuration.

  • Disable static content caching in IIS 7

    I'm a developer having what should be a relatively simple problem in IIS 7 on Windows Server 2008 R2. The problem is that IIS 7 is overzealously caching all static content on the server. It's caching all .html and .js content and not noticing when the content changes on disk unless I iisreset. I've tried the following: Deleting the local cache in my browser (I'm 99% positive this is a server caching issue) In IIS Admin in OutputCaching adding an .html extension and unchecking "User mode caching" and unchecking "Kernel-mode caching" In IIS Admin in OutputCaching adding an .html extension and checking "User mode caching" and selecting the radio for "Prevent all caching" In IIS Admin editing Output Cache Feature settings and unchecking "Enable cache" and "Enable kernel cache under OutputCaching. Running "C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config\appcmd set config "SharePoint - 80" -section: system.webServer/caching -enabled:false" Looking through applicationHost.config and disabling anything related to caching I could find. Nothing seems to work. I'm getting very frustrated. Can anyone please help?

    I am currently trying to setup 2 different sets of Error documents for separate folders within a website. I have 2 folders within the root of a site: demo/ live/ Any requests that return 404's or 403's within the demo folder needs to load one set of pages for the Apache errordocuments, eg. ErrorDocument 404 /statuses/demo-404.html ErrorDocument 403 /statuses/demo-403.html And the live needs to go to similarly name files. ErrorDocument 404 /statuses/live-404.html ErrorDocument 403 /statuses/live-403.html So far I have tried placing an .htaccess file in both directories with the ErrorDocument directives setup pointing to the specific files, the 404 works fine and references the correct page. However, the 403s do not work and revert to the server default when trying to access forbidden folders within the demo directory, the logs indicate the following: [Wed Jun 16 04:47:44 2010] [crit] [client 115.64.131.144] (13)Permission denied: /home/abstract/public_html/demo/xxx/.htaccess pcfg_openfile: unable to check htaccess file, ensure it is readable Is this correct? Would apache revert to default because it is trying to look for the htaccess in a folder it doesn't have permission in? Why wouldn't it work it's way back through the folder tree? Can I make it do this?

    Using WSS 3.0, we have noticed that while users can be restricted to access only certain sub-sites of a site collection through permission settings, the same doesn't seem to be true for web services, such as /_vti_bin/Lists.asmx! Here's our experimental setup: http://formal/test : 'test' site collection - site1 : first site in test site collection, user1 is member - site2 : second site in test site collection, user2 is member With this setup, using a web browser user2 can: - access http://formal/test/site2/Default.aspx - cannot access http://formal/test/site1/Default.aspx That's what is expected. To our surprise however, using the code below, user2 can retrieve the names of the lists in site1, something he should not have access to! Is that by (unfortunate) design, or is there a configuration setting we've missed that would prevent user2 from retrieving the names of lists in site1? Is this going to be different in SharePoint 2010?   • problems installing mysql and phpmyadmin to localhost

    Hi guys, I know there have been many similar questions, but as far as I can tell, most of the other people have gotten further than I have... I'm trying to get a WAMP setup happening. I've got PHP and Apache running and talking to each other. PHP is in c:\PHP Apache is in it's default program files folder. mySQL is in it's default install location. I have localhost setup at D:\public_html\ I'm able to navigate to localhost and see html and php files. But I have a simple mySQL test file: <?php // hostname or ip of server (for local testing, localhost should work) $dbServer='localhost'; // username and password to log onto db server $dbUser='root'; $dbPass=''; // name of database $dbName='test'; $link = mysql_connect("$dbServer", "$dbUser", "$dbPass") or die("Could not connect"); print "Connected successfully<br>"; mysql_select_db("$dbName") or die("Could not select database"); print "Database selected successfully<br>"; // close connection mysql_close($link); ?> When I try and open this, I get "could not connect" Now, I haven't even created a database yet, because I can't log into mySQL with phpmyadmin-so I think I've done something wrong in my mySQL install because they aren't talking to each other. I guess my main question is how do I first create a database in mySQL to be sure I have even installed it correctly?

    Hello i really did all what i know to install the PostgreSQL 9.3.4 on my windows 2003 server x64, but i'm always stopped with this error : please see the error : http://oi57.tinypic.com/s4tb8i.jpg I really don't know what to do , if i click OK then when i go to the windows services list i don't find the PostgreSQL service so i can't Start the service . can any one please help me to install it correctly .   • Problems with 5.1 digital out on Ubuntu 12.04

    I've recently bought a new PC, installed Ubuntu and am now unable to get 5.1 digital sound working. Simple analogue stereo works fine on both the front and rear connectors. On my old box I connected the coax connection from my soundcard to my surround sound amplifier, set Settings-Sound to "Digital Stereo Duplex" and it worked. My old soundcard doesn't fit in my new machine so I'm using the built-in sound hardware. I'm connecting the combination output socket on the back of the PC via the same cable to my surround amp as before. The MB is an MSI Global H61M-P31 with an RealTek ALC887 sound chip. When I go to Settings-Sound I only see "Headphone Built-in Audio" and "Analogue Output Built-in Audio" - no digitial options.
