• Defaults for Exporting Data in Oracle SQL Developer

  I was testing a reported bug in SQL Developer today – so the bug I was looking for wasn’t there (YES!) but I found a different one (NO!) – and I was getting frustrated by having to check the same boxes over and over again. What I wanted was INSERT STATEMENTS to the CLIPBOARD. Not what I want! I’m always doing the same thing, over and over again. And I never go to FILE – that’s too permanent for my type of work. I either want stuff to the clipboard or to the worksheet. Surely there’s a way to tell SQL Developer how to behave? Oh yeah, check the preferences So you can set the defaults for this dialog. Go to: Tools – Preferences – Database – Utilities – Export Now I will always start with ‘INSERT’ and ‘Clipboard’ – woohoo! Now, I can also go INTO the preferences for each of the different formats to save me a few more clicks. I prefer pointy hats (^) for my delimiters, don’t you? So, spend a few minutes and set each of these to what you’re normally doing and save yourself a bunch of time going forward.

• game multiplayer service development

  I'm currently working on a multiplayer game. I've looked at a number of multiplayer services(player.io, playphone, gamespy, and others) but nothing really hits the mark. They are missing features, lack platform support or cost too much. What I'm looking for is a simple poor man's version of steam or xbox live. Not the game marketplace side of those two but the multiplayer services. User accounts, profiles, presence info, friends, game stats, invites, on/offline messaging. Basically I'm looking for a unified multiplayer platform for all my games across devices. Since I can't find what I'm planning to roll my own piece by piece. I plan to save on server resources by making most of the communication p2p. Things like game data and voice chat can be handled between peers and the server keeps track of user presence and only send updates when needed or requested. I know this runs the risk of cheating but that isn't a concern right now. I plan to run this on a Amazon ec2 micro server for development then move to a small to large instance when finished. I figure user accounts would be the simplest to start with. Users can create accounts online or using in game dialog, login/out, change profile info. The user can access this info online or in game. I will need user authentication and secure communication between server and client. I figure all info will be stored in a database but I dont know how it can be stored securely and accessed from webserver and game services. I would appreciate and links to tutorials, info or advice anyone could provide to get me started. Any programming language is fine but I plan to use c# on the server and c/c++ on devices. I would like to get started right away but I'm in no hurry to get it finished just yet. If you know of a service that already fits my requirements please let me know.

• SQL Developer: BLOBs and the External Editor

  We already know how easy it is to view images and plain text with the BLOB editor, yes? But what if I have in my column a bunch of PDFs stored? I want to see that stuff without having to save the file, finding it, and then opening it. Why can’t I just automatically open it directly from the database? Well, it seems you can. Here’s how. External Editors Step 1: Make sure you have the file types and associated editors defined in the preferences. External editors available from the BLOB viewer Based on what’s going on in your OS, you’ll have several of these already defined. If not, it’s pretty simple to add them manually. Now, assuming you’ve got some fun data loaded up, let’s try it out. A PDF As you can see in the screenshot above, PDF is mapped to Adobe Reader. I just happen to have a PDF loaded into a BLOB, let’s send it to the external editor. Click on the hyperlinked text to load the PDF straight to Adobe Here’s it working in action (click on the image to see the animation): If it’s a big file, you will see a dialog where we’re downloading the data. Now if I were to edit said document and save it back to the database via the ‘Load’ mechanism, then we’ve come full circle.

• How can I set up Eclipse to work with a Quickly program?

  I've installed PyDev in Eclipse and have configured my project so that the project lies under Workspace/Eclipse and the Quickly files lies under Workspace/Quickly. To connect the two I've linked the Quickly project by creating a new folder in Eclipse under the project and select the "advanced option" in the dialog to link a folder into the project. That way I don't need to have the Eclipse project files in my Quickly project. But there is two issues that arises for me: In Eclipse I have to select a Python interpreter and I have no idea what to do. I've googled around for an answer but I can't find if Quickly uses Python 3 or 2.7. Can someone help me make an informed choice? (I'm new to developing Python, that's why I can't tell the difference by the syntax - if there even is a difference) I can't press the "Run" button to launch the application. Must I initialize a program with quickly run? I want to be able to debug through Eclipse, how do I configure this? I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and the Eclipse version from the repositories. Thanks!

• Steam (via Wine) crashes after login - any troubleshooting tips?

  The Steam client crashes after I login. After submitting my credentials, Steam displays a dialog box informing me the client is 'connecting'. I then see the Steam main page and news page displayed for roughly a second or so before the client crashes. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (I think..what's the best way to verify? uname only displays Linux) which I've installed on a usb flash drive using a capser-rw file for persistence. wine-1.3.14 I'm not sure how to troubleshoot. How do I identify if the problem is with wine or steam or the video card driver, or what? • Pointer position way off in Java Application menu's when using gnome-shell

  When using any java application in gnome-shell if the window is maximised the pointer position is way off; but only on the menu's, in the editor, or the side panel, the pointer is fine. This only presents itself when the window is maximized, and it seems that the further away from 0x0 the window is when you maximise it, the bigger the pointer offset. From what I have gathered it has to do with the window not updating it's size when it gets maximised. The other issue is that when a gnome-shell notification appears, when clicking on it, I lose the ability to type in the editor, I can select text etc, but can't give it focus to type. I must bring up some other text input (e.g. right click on a file on the left, select rename, which brings up a rename dialog) after that I can type in the editor again. So, how can I fix this? • Including BLOB images in your PDF Reports

  Earlier this year we walked through how to work with BLOBs in Oracle SQL Developer. So you already know how to INSERT, UPDATE and view the BLOBs stored in your tables. But now I want to show you how to include those images in your PDF reports. You know how to work with SQL Developer reports, right? No? OK, let’s do a quick run down memory lane then: How to Build a Bar Chart Child reports – click on parent record for on-the-fly children records Alright, so if you have a GRID report that contains a BLOB column, you have the option of including the BLOB contents when you create a PDF export: At design time, specify how you want the BLOB content to be treated when you export to PDF Note that you must specify the treatment of the BLOBs in the report design. You won’t be prompted when you launch the Export wizard dialog. When you open your PDF, there will be a link to the image. Click it. Click then confirm. It will launch the default image viewer on your machine. I hope your pictures are more excited than mine.

• Should my dropdown of recently used items show items I no longer have access to

  We are implementing a client for our document management system. Part of this is the checkin screen where one of the fields a user chooses is the folder where the document should be checked into. In our original system, this was represented with a combobox where a user could hand type a folder path or select a path from a list of 5 folders they'd recently used for checking. It is possible that between the time they used the folder and the time they are doing the new checkin the user will no longer have access to the folder. At present, we still show the folder as an option and then, if the user chooses that folder, display an error message when the user submits the check in. We are thinking of removing these recently used folders the user doesn't have access to (we'll make a check when the form is instantiated) because why show an option if we know it will cause a failure (and another dialog message the user has to OK). However, an opposite opinion is that if we remove those folders, the users will think the system has "forgotten" their recent choices and will lose trust in what they are using. I'd like to get some opinions on the better user experience for this problem.

• Quick Script for Adding Skype Groups

  So, I needed to add about 30 people to several different Skype groups today, and I didn’t want to repeat the /add [skypename] thing over and over and over.  Building the list was a pain . . . I couldn’t find a good way to extract all of the users in an existing group.  There’s probably an api or something, but I just did that part by hand. Adding them to the groups was pretty easy with Windows Scripting Host.  Basically, I just ran this: <package>    <job id="vbs">       <script language="VBScript">          set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")          WshShell.AppActivate 4484          WScript.Sleep 100          WshShell.SendKeys "/add user1~"          WScript.Sleep 100 …          WshShell.SendKeys "/add usern~"          WScript.Sleep 100       </script>    </job> </package> Add as many users as you need by copying the sendkeys and sleep lines.  Then, save the script to a .wsf file.  The AppActivate line needs to be changed to have the process id of skype instead of the number there.  To get that, open up Task Manager, click on Processes, then find skype.exe and find it’s PID. Before you double click on the file in windows explorer, you’ll need to have created the groups in skype.  For each group, open the group, and click in the chat window of the group.  Then double click on the WSF file.  If you don’t click in the chat window, you will likely get the add user dialog box instead of just adding the users. • If You Include the Groovy Editor...

  ...in a NetBeans RCP application, what additional JARs will you need to include for the Groovy Editor to work? Leaving aside the debate on the current state & quality of the NetBeans Groovy Editor, so, assuming you need the Groovy support that the NetBeans Groovy Editor provides, you would check the Groovy Editor checkbox in the Project Properties dialog of your application: As you can see, however, the Groovy Editor depends on other modules, some of which, in turn, depend on yet other modules, and so on. So, I clicked the "Resolve" button above and then created a ZIP distribution, to see which additional JARs had been included. Until that point, I had only been using the "platform" cluster, which means that absolutely everything found in the ZIP's "ide" cluster and "java" cluster have only been included so that the Groovy Editor could be included, i.e., all thanks to clicking the "Resolve" button above. Let's first look at what that means for the "java" cluster: That's not so bad and kind of a side effect of Groovy being Java, i.e., a lot of Java functionality is needed. Now let's look at the "ide" cluster: So, in answer to the original question, if all you want in your NetBeans Platform application, in terms of editor functionality, is the Groovy Editor, then you have a pretty high price to pay. At the very least, I would have assumed that the project support JARs and the debugger support JARs would not be so tightly coupled with the Groovy Editor. That would be a cool thing to separate out from the editor support.

• MVVM Light V4b1 for Windows 8 Consumer Preview (with installer)

  I just pushed the following to Codeplex: A new MVVM Light project template for Windows 8 Consumer Preview. This template appears in the File, New Project dialog and allows you to create a Metro style app already wired with MVVM Light. An updated Windows 8 installer for MVVM Light. Preconditions: This installs MVVM Light for Windows 8 only. You can install it side-by-side with the standard MVVM Light for Silverlight, WPF and Windows Phone. Where do I get it? You can download the MSI from: http://mvvmlight.codeplex.com/releases/view/85317 What does it do? The installer installs the Windows 8 version of the MVVM Light DLLs, as well as a new project template for an MVVM Light Metro style app, and code snippets. What is missing? Since Windows 8 Developer Preview, I worked on porting the DispatcherHelper class, and it works now. However the EventToCommand behavior is still not available on Windows 8 (because behaviors are not supported on Windows 8 for the moment). Known issues Some testers reported issues with the code snippets installation. Code snippets should appear when you type “mvvm” in your C# code, there is a list of mvvm-prefixed snippets (such as mvvminpc, etc). • Desktop forgets theme?

  I am running Ubuntu in VirtualBox (on a Windows 7 host). Several times now, the top-level menu bar, the task bar — and seemingly every system dialog — have forgotten the out-of-the-box "Ambiance" theme they conform to when I first installed the system. Window captions still preserve the theme, but pretty much nothing else does. I have searched high and low on Google for assistance with this problem. Everything I've found suggests either running some gconf reset or deleting .gconf* .gnome* and other similar directories. I have followed all this advice and nothing works. I still get a boring Windows-95-style gray 3D look and feel. On previous occasions, after much messing around I've given up and rebooted the VM instance, and been pleasantly suprised to see the original "Ambience" theme restored throughout the UI, but invariably it disappears again some time later, usually after a reboot, so I can never figure out what I did that broke it. Here's a sample from Ubuntu's site of what I want it to look like. And here's a screenshot of my system as it currently looks. Also note that my GNOME Terminals normally have a nice purple semi-translucent look, and as can be seen from the screenshot, they are now just a solid matte white. This last time (just yesterday), trying numerous combinations all the usual tricks and rebooting several times hasn't fixed it, so here I am on SU wondering: How do I recover the out-of-the-box theme for my Gnome/Ubuntu desktop, noting that blowing away all config files — as suggested in many places online — fails to achieve this? It might help to know that it seems to fail either after I resize the VM instance, forcing the Ubuntu desktop to resize itself, or after I play around with Compiz settings. I haven't been able to figure out which of these it is, and it could be neither. Given the amount of pain I have had to go through to get things back to normal (and given that I am at a loss as to how to do so), it has proven difficult to definitively isolate the cause.

• Multiline Replacement With Visual Studio

  I had to remove some file headers in a bigger project which were all of the form #region File Header /*[ Compilation unit ----------------------------------------------------------       Name            : Class1.cs       Language        : C#     Creation Date   :      Description     : -----------------------------------------------------------------------------*/ /*] END */ #endregion I know that would be a cool thing to write a simple C# program use a recursive file search, read all lines skip the first n lines and write the files back to disc. But I wanted to test things first before I ruin my source files with one little typo. There comes the Visual Studio Search and Replace in Files dialog into the game. I can test my regular expression to do a multiline match with the Find button before actually breaking anything. And if something goes wrong I have the Undo button.   There is a nice blog post from Paulo Morgado online who deals with Multiline Regular expressions. The Visual Studio Regular expressions are non standard so you have to adapt your usual Regex know how to the other patterns. The pattern I cam finally up with is \#region File Header:b*(.*\n)@\#endregion The Regular expression can be read as \#region File Header Match “#region File Header” \# Escapes the # character since it is a quantifier. :b* After this none or more spaces or tabs can follow (:b stands for space or tab) (.*\n)@ Match anything across lines in a non greedy way (the @ character makes it non greedy) to prevent matching too much until the #endregion somewhere in our source file. \#endregion Match everything until “#endregion” is found I had always knew that Visual Studio can do it but I never bothered to learn the non standard Regex syntax. This is powerful and it is inside Visual Studio since 2005!
