  You're working on an application and this thought occurs to you: "Wouldn't it be cool if I could define rules specifying that all static members, initializers, and fields should always be at the top of the class? And then, whenever I wanted to, I'd start off a process that would actually do the reordering for me, moving class elements around, based on the rules I had defined, automatically, across one or more classes or packages or even complete code bases, all at the same time?" Well, here you go: That's where you can set rules for the ordering of your class members. A new hint (i.e., new in NetBeans IDE 7.3), which you need to enable yourself because by default it is disabled, let's the IDE show a hint in the Java Editor whenever there's code that isn't ordered according to the rules you defined: The first element in a file that the Java Editor identifies as not matching your rules gets a lightbulb hint shown in the left sidebar: Then, when you click the lightbulb, automatically the file is reordered according to your defined rules. However, it's not much fun going through each file individually to fix class elements as shown above. For that reason, you can go to "Refactor | Inspect and Transform". There, in the "Inspect and Transform" dialog, you can choose the hint shown above and then specify that you'd like it to be applied to a scope of your choice, which could be a file, a package, a project, combinations of these, or all of the open projects, as shown below: Then, when Inspect is clicked, the Refactoring window shows all the members that are ordered in ways that don't conform to your rules: Click "Do Refactoring" above and, in one fell swoop, all the class elements within the selected scope are ordered according to your rules.

• How can I downgrade a system that accidentally had backports installed?

  I installed a fresh Ubuntu system. Somehow - possibly through my own error - the backports repository got enabled. Then I did several upgrades. I noticed that this happened when networking suddenly stopped working, "Network Settings" now has an "(alpha)" in the title bar, "System Settings" ? "Network" now displays an error dialog saying "The system network services are not compatible with this version". Now, I've disabled the backports repository, and I'd like to restore my system to its previously-functional state. My question is twofold: How do I determine which packages were installed from backports? Can I automatically re-install all those packages (and purge their configuration) to get back to a sensible state? If the answer to 2 is "no" I can probably manually purge some things and reinstall, but it would be nice to have it handled automatically. Update: It wasn't an update that broke the network; it was apt-get install indicator-network, which installed something called "connman" and removed network-manager and network-manager-gnome. Nevertheless I am leaving the question up, since I am still interested in how I can purge packages from a particular source after accidentally adding that source, and how I can determine which packages were installed from where.

• bluetooth daemon not running at startup

  I'm trying to connect a bluetooth mouse to my Xubuntu system using Blueman (v. 1.21) Problem seems to be bluetoothd not running at startup, so blueman refuses to start, only a dialog appears: "Bluez daemon is not running, blueman-manager cannot continue." On my system, bluetoothd will run only as root (sudo), so my current workaround is simply to sudo bluetoothd manually, which works fine but id like to have it run at startup so that my mouse is just working without any interaction from me, if possible. If i try to start bluetoothd as non-root it reports: Bluetooth deamon 4.91 Unable to get on D-Bus In the startup scripts i found the same bluetoothd script in all runlevels and init.d: DAEMON=/usr/sbin/bluetoothd test -f /usr/sbin/bluetoothd || exit 0 # bluetoothd normally starts up by udev rules. it needs dbus to function, log_progress_msg "bluetoothd" pkill -TERM bluetoothd || true log_progress_msg "bluetoothd" I looked in /etc/udev/rules.d/ but no reference to bluetoothd. Further i have already tried with no luck: Editing /etc/dbus-1/system.d/bluetooth.conf to include my user (essentially copying the part that was for root): I tried it while both keeping the root policy and without, still, no luck! Editing /etc/pam.d/common-session and /etc/pam.d/gdm to include the line: session optional pam_ck_connector.so In the case of common-session it was already there but with a "nox11" which i tried removing. No luck no luck. Btw, I'm confused as to which session manager I'm using, since i have both xfce4-session and gdm-session-worker running. Anyways, hope someone is savvy enough to figure it out or bring some hints, otherwise i sincerely apologize for wasting your time! • My First Post with Windows Live Writer

  I receive daily newsletters from DotNetSlackers regarding various .NET topics.  Today I read an article from an apparent Microsoft employee who gave some insight to the organizational culture within the company.  Always on the lookout for new tools and technologies I noted that he used Windows Live Writer for editing and managing his blog content.  I thought I’d give it a try. Let’s try adding a picture and adjusting it’s placement within this blog post relative to this text. … Adding the image is quite simple using the “Insert” options given to the right of the blog content editor.  Inserting without using a table makes aligning text just so impossible, but that’s inherent with any WYSIWYG editor.  Instead using a table with at least 2 columns (1 for text and 1 for the image) works best.   Let’s try adding a map!   That’s pretty sweet!  You can map to any location within the editor itself.  A dialog opens which utilizes Bing! allowing you to enter the address, etc. Well, that’s enough for me.  Time to pimp this to my wife for use on our family blog.  BTW, Windows Live Writer allows you to post content to a number of blogging sites…fantastic!!!

  Currently our team develops Web Applications and now we are going to Windows Forms applications. I have created the inception phase for our Windows Forms project structure. eg: ApplicationSolution --> Security Project(Login Authentication) a. Execute Application (Start) c. On Security dialog, application automatically get the userid of the user and see all the application it is registered using System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent() eg: Prototype Welcome User! Please Choose Appliations you are registered on below: ProjectApplication1 <--this will be a dropdown ProjectApplication2 Password: [*********************] [Access Application Button] d. User selects the application with its password e. • Cannot Connect Modem ( /dev/ttySL0 ) Using gnome-ppp - Dial-Up Connection

  I'm trying to connect my Toshiba Satellite running Ubuntu 10.04 to my Eris running Android 2.1 through a Bluetooth connection and establish a dial-up connection (DUN) with the modem. I can connect my phone to my laptop, and I can detect my modem (after installing drivers), which is located at /dev/ttySL0. But when I launch gnome-ppp and enter my phone number (123 for PDA-Net) I get a dialog that says "Connecting... Sending Password" with Log and Cancel buttons. The log shows this: --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60 --> Cannot get information for serial port. --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 OK --> Modem initialized. --> Please enter password (or empty password to stop): --> Configuration does not specify a valid login name. The PDA-Net DUN protocol is running and shows no error. Any ideas? Any help is much appreciated.

• Blank pale blue screen with Live USB Kubuntu on AMD Sempron 2800+ processor

  I am trying to install Kubuntu onto a USB stick to use on my Acer Aspire 1362 laptop with an AMD Sempron 2800+ chip. Using Windows XP, I downloaded and saved to the laptop's hard drive: kubuntu-2.04.1-desktop-i386.iso from the GetKubuntu website and LinuxLive USB Creator 2.8.16.exe from the Linux live website I then installed the latter and ran it, installing the kubuntu onto the Memory stick. Leaving the Bios setup unchanged, the USB stick is ignored and Windows boots. If I change the Bios boot order so that the memory stick takes precedence, I see a dark blue screen announcing Kubukntu 12.04, and on selecting either “live Mode” or “Persistent mode”, messages flash by quickly, some of which appear to be error messages, including “trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs”, “cannot allocate resource for mainboard”, “no plug and play device found”. Eventually I see a pale blue screen with four moving dots announcing Kubukntu 12.04, similar to the login screen of my Kubuntu desktop, but no invitation to log in or indeed any dialog. After several minutes, this changes to a black screen with more messages including “no caching mode present”, “ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready”, then degrades to a blank pale blue screen which can only be moved by switching the computer off. Finding no way to log the error messages passing by, I managed to photograph most of them, but know no way to attach the photo to this forum. As suggested by User 68186 (to whom thanks!), I have edited my original post to reflect the recent progress, so the following two comments are now superseded.

• Can't change settings for Mobile Broadband Dongle - Button is greyed out

  I was with VirginBroadband.com.au (Australia). My huawai 3G Dongle was working great on Ubuntu, However I have changed ISP's. I unlocked the modem, and put in the new SIM. I have tested this in my Windows PC and it connects to the new (Optus) Network A-OK and it all works. When I put this dongle (the same one that was working fine in Ubuntu) into that same Ubuntu Netbook it simply won't connect. When I try to go into the dialog to try and add or change settings the button to change or update settings is greyed out, I can't select it. Apparently since this dongle was already recognized the Broadband Setup Wizard won't start, and I have no idea how to get it to start (presuming it has the ability to configure an already recognized dongle). What do I have to do to either enable the ability to change the configuration for this setup, or to blow away the one that is set up so the Broadband Wizard will re-start and let me configure a new one. Can anyone provide simple instructions for doing this? I'm using Ubuntu with the Cinnamon Desktop

• nautilus crash when merging/overwriting files

  On my Ubuntu 10.10, whenever I want to copy some files/folders over some other files/folders, or when I try to empty the trash, nautilus crashes! Example: I have a folder with some files. Now I want to overwrite this folder with a folder with the same name, same files, but some additional files, the merge window comes up, I choose merge and nautilus crashes (does not respond, when I press the close button I can force close it). Some times it even does the copying/emptying (trash), but it always crashes! This happens when copying to the same partition/ntfs partition/netshares, but not when I make a new folder and copy the files/folders into that (without overwriting anything). On a netshare, it's even possible to merge these files afterwards with another computer! dmesg/syslog/messages does not show any entry related to that problem. Does anyone have a solution for this very annoying problem? EDIT: dpkg -l nautilus* (see output in pastebin) EDIT2: I found out, nautilus already crashes before clicking replace/merge (as soon as the question appeares. In the video it's not entirely clear, that i click the cross before the force-close dialog appeares. Why? Because any file I create on or move to the partition is automatically marked as executable. The problem is that there is no way of changing that through nautilus. I cannot uncheck the "Allow executing file as program" option. The noexec option doesn't help, unfortunately. It only prevents nautilus from displaying the "run" or "read" dialog but doesn't change the executable flag. Is there any way I can fix this?

• How do I install 10.04 on a Vortex86DX embdedded system?

  I am trying to install Ubuntu on a Netcom NC-499 board that contains a Vortex86DX processor. The processor vendor claims support for Ubuntu 10.04 but I am having problems installing it. I am trying to install to a 8GB compact flash card attached to the board with an IDE connector, using a USB connection CD-Rom drive and a burned ISO image obtained from this link http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04.0/ubuntu-10.04.3-desktop-i386.iso . Installation proceeds up to the point of around 78% but during the stage where the installer informs me that it is "configuring apt", the installer terminates with a popup dialog containing the following "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again." I have no idea what to do at this point. I am a Linux novice and I do not really know how to investigate the problems with the installation. I have configured the BIOS exactly according to how the vendor specifies and they assure me that this version is fully compatible with their hardware and yet I am unable to get a decent install. I am able to install Ubuntu 8.04 using exactly the same procedure successfully so I am sure there is no problem with my CD-Rom compatibility or the compact flash drive. Any help will be gratefully received.

  Here is where you can find the sources of the latest and greatest NetBeans Gradle plugin: http://java.net/projects/nb-api-samples/sources/api-samples/show/versions/7.1/misc/GradleSupport To use it, download the sources above, open the sources into the IDE (which must be 7.1.1 or above), then you'll have a NetBeans module. Right-click it to run the module into a new instance of NetBeans IDE. In the Options window's Miscellaneous tab, there's a Gradle subtab for setting the Gradle location. In the New File dialog, in the Other category, you'll find a template named "Empty Gradle file". Make sure to name it "build" and to put it in the root directory of the application (by leaving the Folder field empty, you're specifying it should be created in the root directory). You'll then be able to expand the build.gradle file: Double-click a task to run it. When you open the file, it opens in the Groovy editor, if the Groovy editor is installed. When you make changes in the file, the list of tasks, shown above, is automatically recreated. It's at a really early stage of development and it would be great if developers out there would be interested in adding more features to it.
