• Having many subdomains with SSL--best practices?

  I have a site that has many subdomains (one for each client). The content for each subdomain will be different, pulling different data, different layouts etc, so I don't think I can just alias one directory to many different sub domains. My question is, what's the best practice for doing this? Each subdomain will need SSL. My setup is Amazon EC2 (ubuntu) Wildcard SSL for my domain (*.mydomain.com) Apache 2 PHP (LAMP) Currently, I'm just creating a new entry into "/etc/hosts" and an appropriate spot in the web root (ie /var/www/abc.mydomain.com, /var/www/def.mydomain.com, etc). I've just discovered that I'll need a unique IP for each subdomain, and that's tricky with EC2 as they limit you to the number you can have (unless you jump through some hoops). Right now I have about 10 subdomains, which is manageable, but theoretically I could have thousands. Am I doing it the only way possible or is there a better way I should investigate?

My situation is I running unison with cron where script below : */1 * * * * /usr/bin/unison /dev/null 2&1 and default profile like below : root = /var/www root = ssh://web02.example.com//var/www auto=true batch=true confirmbigdel=true fastcheck=true group=true owner=true prefer=newer silent=true times=true So in every minutes will syncronized www folder . My problem are : I upload file with size bigger than 10 MB to www from client with user1 permission where www folder is user1 owner. file in processing uploading then unison running in that minute and suddenly file upload owner changed to root:root When I editing file in www folder then I save when unison running, file owner changed to root:root where should be user1:user1 Is there anyone know about this problem?

Does this include the how long it take to accomplish tasks such as: Server side code for the site logic with one language or multiple php,asp,asp.net. The needs of the site and how it will work (planning) How can i judge how long it will take to complete a website? The site has CMS for adding and editing news, products, articles on the experience of the company. Also, they can edit team work, add Recreational Activities and a logo gallery with compressed psd download, and send messages to cpanel and to email. You are starting from scratch except JQuery and PHPmailer. How can I estimate how long the job will take, and how can I calculate the required time to finish any new projects? I'm so sorry for many scattered questions, but I'm in my first experiment and I want to take benefits from the great experience of those who have it.

• Internet Explorer will not open Office files

  An issue was brought to my attention today at work where certain users were unable to open Office files (specifically Excel) from Internet Explorer 7.   The user would click on a button which simply generated an inline JS call to open a pop-up pointing to the .xlsx file on the server. IE would open the pop-up and then shortly thereafter the pop-up would disappear without the file ever opening.   I tweaked the security settings in the users browser...added the site to the list of trusted sites and lowered the security settings to Medium-Low. This allowed IE to at least prompt with the Save or Open message. Clicking either open resulted in "Internet Explorer Could Not Open the Site...".   Perturbed, I retreated back to Geek Central (aka my desk) and modified my application such that instead of simply pointing the browser to the file and now used Response.TransmitFile() to stream it to the browser instead. I thought to myself "this is perfect, it has to work!!!". Alas, no luck.   Bewildered and confused and returned to the lone users computer and started looking around the various IE options. I stumbled upon "Clear SSL State" under the "Content" tab. This appears to clear out all SSL certificates on the client forcing it to refresh. Doing this in concert with resetting the security levels for all zones back to their defaults seemed to do the trick.

• Modify HTML Content with Squid

  We have setup our network as per the tutorial here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Upside-Down-TernetHowTo. Basically, we have a squid proxy that inverts images for pages that clients request. We're trying to modify the script so that we can edit the contents of the webpage before the webpage is sent to the client. We are not having any luck. I'm wondering if there is something different about .html files that makes this not possible. What is happening is that we do a wget on the URI that is requested, save it locally, modify it and then echo back the new URI. The page that the user gets is the unmodified page and not the one that we just changed.

• How can I solve Windows PPTP VPN issues?

  I'm having persistent problems with Windows PPTP VPN connections. The VPN appears up whilst the tunnel won't transfer traffic (ping to a remote IP within the VPN works for a while, and then fails). The client receives routing information via DHCP. When the connection fails, the routing table is still correct so I don't think it's a routing problem. My internet connection is via an ADSL2 line. There's software to deal with PPTP problems, like TunnelRat, but I don't want to install v1.1 of the .NET framework and I'd rather get to the bottom of the problem (I have multiple VPN connections and some are more unreliable than others). What can I do to get to the bottom of this? Alternatively, what can I do to keep the connection alive?

• Setting up VPS: How to configure name servers

  So I got a VPS set up (LAMP) and have transfered a couple of sites over. Now I want to point my domain names from the old host to the new VPS host, which does not have any name servers yet. On my registrars console I have set the domain name 'www.mydomain.com' domain host settings to point to my VPS's ip address, eg: ns1.mydomain.com = 111.222.3.4 and ns2.mydomain.com = 111.222.3.4 I then lowered the TTL to one hour. I then switched the Nameservers on that domain to these new ones. (ns1/2.mydomain.com) In WHM I then set the servers name servers to ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com. I waited an hour to test...but nothing changed - the domain name still directed to the old host. Have I missed something? Is the some other record I need to change on the DNS? I find this very confusing, does anyone know a resource or can provide a step by step guide on how to configure a new servers nameservers? Thanks EDIT: added image (sorry bout the censoring. • ORA-01019 error only as an administrator

  I'm having a strange problem. I've installed the Oracle 10g client on a terminal server running Windows Server 2008R2. When I try to connect to Oracle, using, say, Toad, I receive the error "ORA-01019 unable to allocate memory in the user side". But this only happens if I'm logged in as an administrator. If I connect as a normal user, I can connect without issue. Also -- if a normal user is connected, I can then connect without a problem as an administrator. Any thoughts?

• Edit files from Cyberduck in an existing Vim window

  I use Cyberduck as my go to FTP client on Windows. I have but one complaint, and that is whenever I click the edit button to edit the remote file with a local version of gVim, it opens in a new window/instance of Vim. This leads to a cluttered desktop as well as not allowing the AutoComplPop to work at it's full potential. What I would like to be able to do is automatically open every file in a new buffer inside of an existing gVim buffer instead of a new window, kind of like the Windows version of gVim and how it has the option to edit a file in a new buffer. Is there anyway to do this in Cyberduck/gVim setting?

• Bypass cache for mobile user agents, VARNISH+NGINX+W3CACHE

  Right now I'm running Wordpress w/ W3 Cache on nginx with varnish front end. I'm trying to use the WP Touch Pro plugin for wordpress to display mobile sites, but it is not working. Shows the desktop theme still. I've put the mobile user agents in the rejected user agents box in w3 cache. • Why not have a High Level Language based OS? Are Low Level Languages more efficient?

  Without being presumptuous, I would like you to consider the possibility of this. Most OS today are based on pretty low level languages (mainly C/C++) Even the new ones such as Android uses JNI & underlying implementation is in C In fact, (this is a personal observation) many programs written in C run a lot faster than their high level counterparts (eg: Transmission (a bittorrent client on Ubuntu) is a whole lot faster than Vuze(Java) or Deluge(Python)). Even python compilers are written in C, although PyPy is an exception. So is there a particular reason for this? Why is it that all our so called "High Level Languages" with the great "OOP" concepts can't be used in making a solid OS? So I have 2 questions basically. Why are applications written in low level languages more efficient than their HLL counterparts? Do low level languages perform better for the simple reason that they are low level and are translated to machine code easier? Why do we not have a full fledged OS based entirely on a High Level Language?

• CNAME point subdomain to another domain

  I know this has been asked before in various forms, but I've tried all the suggestions and had no luck (or maybe skills). I am trying to point a subdomain (mail.cloversalon.com) to Rackspace's hosted Webmail service for a client. My understanding is I should be able to set up cname for the subdomain and point it to rackspace's hostname: apps.rackspace.com I have set up the following cnames: www.mail IN CNAME apps.rackspace.com autodiscover IN CNAME autodiscover.emailsrvr.com mail IN CNAME apps.rackspace.com I have tried doing dig mail.cloversalon.com and nslookup but both report that mail.cloversalon.com is a nonexistent domain. I have restarted the name server numerous times. I'm sure I must be missing something silly. Thanks for any help! Cheers

• NIC bonding with two uplinks

  Is bonding the preferred way of implementing ISP redundancy? In the texts I've seen, bond device has a netmask, gateway of it's own. How can this be obtained if there are two different gateways from two uplinks, which one to choose? Do I need any special routing rules to go with it or does simply configuring separate interfaces (using Debian, /etc/network/interfaces), i.e eth1, eth2 for their corresponding uplinks and bonding them to bond0 handle routing automatically? If I want to NAT client machines, do they use bond device's IP as a gateway? Does the bond0 device is the device that goes into iptables nat rules? Thanks

• Running a defect php file cause error 500

  When I address a PHP file, I always get an error 500. I've looked up the logs of my Apache server, and this displays that some includes etc. in the PHP file address files which don't exist on the server. They don't exist because I'm just testing my PHP file. But could it be achieved that the server runs the php file in every case, even when something is wrong? Every 30 seconds an entry is made in the error_log file which says [Sat Jun 09 17:55:07 2012] [error] [client 10.224.55.160] File does not exist: /var/www/html/index.html ... but there IS an index.html?!

• Why does apt-get install Skype easily while aptitude complains about MAJOR dependency errors?

  I was trying to install Skype on Ubuntu 13.04, from the Canonical repositories. With apt-get it worked easily, while aptitude had a huge problem with dependencies and proposed a complicated solution. Why is this so? This system operates as a central access point to MCU devices and is able to control them. We use other's software in our product. We do not modify their source code. The product (the computer part) consists of a computer, an OS and software we create. How does the use of an OS affect our own code (licence)? Is there a possibility of avoiding GPL for our own code? eg. shipping the software seperated? Are there any effects to other components of our product, eg. the MCU part? The node.js application delivers a WebApp to the client where it is executed. Are there any effects (As we would like to sell parts of the code as an additional App on the App Stores)? I know we make use of the work of the community and i respect this. The problem is: The software alone is kind of useless without the MCU devices. I do not expect a legal advice.

• How to redirect (or Alias) jump page with Apache

  I'm not an Apache expert but need to make a small change to a web server. We are introducing a "jump page" URL that is different from a primary URL (for tracking reasons). /productA/index.html /productA/jump_index.html Basically i want to log that jump_index.html was requested and then return index.html. I don't want the client to wait 8 seconds or so for a redirect. How should we be handling this? Simply symlink (or alias) the file in the filesystem? Use mod_alias Alias Match (if so how exactly)? something better still? • courier-imap w mysql : share a folder between 2 virtual users on debian

  Hi I have a working courier-imap server on my Debian Etch private server ; users are virtual, authentificatin goes through mysql. It's been working good for years. I would like to share an imap folder between 2 users. I thought I would just have to do something like this : cd path/to/mailusers/dir ln -s path/to/user1/maildir/.folder_to_be_synched path/to/user2/maildir/ After I entered the command, I found that user2 saw a new folder in its imap client, but the folder appeared empty. It is not a permission problem because all the virtual users have the same permissions on the file system. Any idea what I could do ? thanks

• Windows Server 2008R2 IIS7.5, Requests getting 401 status

  We have a web site running in windows server 2008r2 iis7.5 and we are seeing several errors reported from our global error handler saying that "Request Timed Out". I matched up one to the IIS log file and see the request took 135116 (presumably milliseconds) had an sc-status of 401 an sc-sub0status of 0 and an sc-win32-status of 64. 2 requests failed in these way but lots of surrounding requests (1979 successful requests vs 2 fails) for the same user went through perfectly fine- with the same cs-username which makes a 401 seem a little odd. The target of the requests is an ASP.Net web service's web method called by the .net client library- it's called a lot of times per user (3 times per second) to keep a page updated. We're getting some users reportng seeing a freezing effect and I think this may be the cause, any ideas? Peter

• sshd running but no PID file

  I'm recently started using monit to monitor the status of sshd on my CentOS 5.4 server. This works fine, but every so often monit reports that sshd is no longer running. This isn't true - I am still able to login to the server via ssh, however I note the following: There is no longer any PID file at /var/run/sshd.pid - after a reboot this file exists. Once it is gone, restarting sshd via service sshd restart does not create the PID file. sudo service sshd status reports openssh-daemon is stopped - again, restarting sshd does not change this, but a reboot does. sudo service sshd stop reports failed, presumably because of the missing PID file. Any idea what is going on? Update sudo netstat -lptun gives the following output relating to port 22 tcp 0 0 :::22 :::* LISTEN 20735/sshd Killing the process with this PID as suggested by @Henry and then starting sshd via service results in service sshd status recognising the process by PID again. Would still like to understand this better. RPM verify suggested by a couple of answerers shows this: sudo rpm -vV openssh openssh-server openssh-clients | grep 'S\.5' S.5....T c /etc/pam.d/sshd S.5....T c /etc/ssh/sshd_config /etc/pam.d/sshd has the following contents: #%PAM-1.0 auth include system-auth account required pam_nologin.so account include system-auth password include system-auth session optional pam_keyinit.so force revoke session include system-auth #session required pam_loginuid.so Should that last line be commented out?   I use a MySQL database running on a Windows box, and for performance reasons I'm connecting to it using named pipes. The (Java) application using the database (through Hibernate) can let the connection lie idle for quite a long time, which causes the connection to fail with the following message: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: The last packet successfully received from the server was 33 558 297 milliseconds ago. The last packet sent successfully to the server was 33 558 297 milliseconds ago. is longer than the server configured value of 'wait_timeout'. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. autoReconnect unfortunately has no effect (and neither does autoReconnectForPools), but the wait_timeout docs state that wait_timeout only applies "to TCP/IP and Unix socket file connections, not to connections made via named pipes, or shared memory". How can I change the wait_timeout for named pipes?
