• 2D soft-body physics engines?

  Hi so i've recently learned the SFML graphics library and would like to use or make a non-rigid body 2D physics system to use with it. I have three questions: The definition of rigid body in Box2d is A chunk of matter that is so strong that the distance between any two bits of matter on the chunk is completely constant. And this is exactly what i don't want as i would like to make elastic, deformable, breakable, and re-connection bodies. 1. Are there any simple 2D physics engines, but with these kinds of characteristics out there? preferably free or opensource? 2. If not could i use box2d and work off of it to create it even if it's based on rigid bodies? 3. Finally, if there is a simple physics engine like this, should i go through with the proccess of creating a new one anyway, simply for experience and to enhance physics math knowledge? I feel like it would help if i ever wanted to modify the code of an existing engine, or create a game with really unique physics. Thanks!

• How to dealing with the "programming blowhard"?

  (Repost, I posted this in the wrong section before, sorry) So I'm sure everyone has run into this person at one point or another, someone catches wind of your project or idea and initially shows some interest. You get to talking about some of your methods and usually around this time they interject stating how you should use method X instead, or just use library Y. But not as a friendly suggestion, but bordering on a commandment. Often repeating the same advice over and over like a overzealous parrot. Personally, I like to reinvent the wheel when I'm learning, or even just for fun, even if it turns out worse than what's been done before. But this person apparently cannot fathom recreating ANY utility for such purposes, or possibly try something that doesn't strictly follow traditional OOP practices, and will settle for nothing except their sense of perfection, and thus naturally heave their criticism sludge down my ears full force. To top it off, they eventually start justifying their advice (retardation) by listing all the incredibly complex things they've coded single-handedly (usually along the lines of "trust me, I've made/used program X for a long time, blah blah blah"). Now, I'm far from being a programming master, I'm probably not even that good, and as such I value advice and critique, but I think advice/critique has a time and place. There is also a big difference between being helpful and being narcissistic. In the past I probably would have used a somewhat stronger George Carlin style dismissal, but I don't think burning bridges is the best approach anymore. Maybe I'm just an asshole, but do you have any advice on how to deal with this kind of verbal flogging?

• HP-UX - custom rsync path

There are a range of HP-UX 11.11 hosts I'm unable to install rsync (I'm limited to a non-privileged user) I've extracted both rsync binary and libpopt.sl, libiconv.sl, libintl.sl from the depots into one of that user's directories: /home/zenith/rsync/ Problem is, I can't get my RH Linux box communicating with it: rsync -e --rsync-path=/home/zenith/rsync/rsync --compress=9 -pgtov --filter=+rs_/'*.log' --exclude='*' [email protected]:/home/zenith/service/logs/ /u01/rsync_depot/service/192.102.14.18/ /usr/lib/dld.sl: Can't find path for shared library: libintl.sl /usr/lib/dld.sl: No such file or directory sh: 1644 Abort(coredump) I've added to the remote host .profile export SHLIB_PATH=/usr/lib:/home/zenith/rsync export PATH=$PATH:/home/zenith/rsync but still, no libintl.sl is found. How can I initialize the correct env variable/ get this to work?

• Step by Step screencasts to do Behavior Driven Development on WCF and UI using xUnit

  I am trying to encourage my team to get into Behavior Driven Development (BDD). So, I made two quick video tutorials to show how BDD can be done from early requirement collection stage to late integration tests. It explains breaking user stories into behaviors, and then developers and test engineers taking the behavior specs and writing a WCF service and unit test for it, in parallel, and then eventually integrating the WCF service and doing the integration tests. It introduces how mocking is done using the Moq library. Moreover, it shows a way how you can write test once and do both unit and integration tests at the flip of a config setting. Watch the screencast here: Doing BDD with xUnit, Subspec and on a WCF Service  Warning: you might hear some noise in the audio in some places. Something wrong with audio bit rate. I suggest you let the video download for a while and then play it. If you still get noise, go back couple of seconds earlier and then resume play. It eliminates the noise.  The next video tutorial is about doing BDD to do automated UI tests. It shows how test engineers can take behaviors and then write tests that tests a prototype UI in isolation (just like Service Contract) in order to ensure the prototype conforms to the expected behaviors, while developers can write the real code and build the real product in parallel. When the real stuff is done, the same test can test the real stuff and ensure the agreed behaviors are satisfied. I have used WatiN to automate UI and test UI for expected behaviors. • Fastest pathfinding for static node matrix

  I'm programming a route finding routine in VB.NET for an online game I play, and I'm searching for the fastest route finding algorithm for my map type. The game takes place in space, with thousands of solar systems connected by jump gates. The game devs have provided a DB dump containing a list of every system and the systems it can jump to. The map isn't quite a node tree, since some branches can jump to other branches - more of a matrix. What I need is a fast pathfinding algorithm. I have already implemented an A* routine and a Dijkstra's, both find the best path but are too slow for my purposes - a search that considers about 5000 nodes takes over 20 seconds to compute. A similar program on a website can do the same search in less than a second. This website claims to use D*, which I have looked into. That algorithm seems more appropriate for dynamic maps rather than one that does not change - unless I misunderstand it's premise. So is there something faster I can use for a map that is not your typical tile/polygon base? GBFS? Perhaps a DFS? Or have I likely got some problem with my A* - maybe poorly chosen heuristics or movement cost? Currently my movement cost is the length of the jump (the DB dump has solar system coordinates as well), and the heuristic is a quick euclidean calculation from the node to the goal. In case anyone has some optimizations for my A*, here is the routine that consumes about 60% of my processing time, according to my profiler. The coordinateData table contains a list of every system's coordinates, and neighborNode.distance is the distance of the jump. • Music player alternative to windows Media Player

  I find the UI and general usability of the prepackaged windows Media Player to be cludgy and at times incomprehensible. I used to use programs like WinAmp and Sonique, many years ago. What are some current alternatives to the windows Media Player? I don't have iTunes - I'm pretty happy with ripping my own audio files from my album collection. I'm specifically looking for the follow qualities/abilities: Easy sorting and manipulation of the media library Easy tagging of media - marking favorites and ratings, etc. Preferably lightweight. Something like a Picasa for audio media.

• MacGyver Moments

  Denny Cherry tagged me to write about my best MacGyver Moment.  Usually I ignore blogosphere fluff and just use this space to write what I think is important.  However, #MVP10 just ended and I have a stronger sense of community.  Besides, where else would I mention my second best Macgyver moment was making a BIOS jumper out of a soda can.  Aluminum is conductive and I didn't have any real jumpers lying around. My best moment is probably my entire home computer network.  Every system but one is hand-built, usually cobbled together out of spare parts and 'adapted' from its original purpose. My Primary Domain Controller is a Dell 2300.   The Service Tag indicates it was shipped to the original owner in 1999.  Box has a PERC/1 RAID controller.  I acquired this from a previous employer for $50.  It runs Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.  Does DNS, DHCP, and RADIUS services as a bonus.  RADIUS authentication is used for VPN and Wireless access.  It is nice to sign in once and be done with it. The Secondary Domain Controller is an old desktop.  Dual P-III 933 with some extra drives. My VPN box is a P-II 250 with 384MB of RAM and a 21 GB hard drive.  I did a P-to-V to my Hyper-V box a year or so ago and retired the hardware again.  Dynamic DNS lets me connect no matter how often Comcast shuffles my IP. The Hyper-V box is a desktop system with 8GB RAM and an AMD Athlon 5000+ processor.  Cost me less than $500 to put together nearly two years ago.  I reasoned that if Vista and Windows 2008 were the same code then Vista 64-bit certified meant the drivers for Vista would load into Windows 2008.  Turns out I was right. Later I added three 1TB drives but wasn't too happy with how that turned out.  I recovered two of the drives yesterday and am building an iSCSI storage unit. (Much thanks to Starwind.  Great product).  I am using an old AMD 1.1GhZ box with 1.5 GB RAM (cobbled together from three old PCs) as my storave server.  The Hyper-V box is slated for an OS rebuild to 2008 R2 once I get the storage system worked out.  maybe in a week or two. A couple of DLink Gigabit switches ties everything together. Add in the Vonage box, the three PCs, the Wireless-N Access Point, the two notebooks and the XBox and you have gone from MacGyver to darn near Rube Goldberg. The only thing I really spend money on is power supplies and fans.  I buy top-of-the-line for both. I even pull and crimp my own cables. Oh, and if my kids hose up a PC, I have all of their data on a server elsewhere.  Every PC and laptop is pretty much interchangable for email and basic workstation tasks.  That helps a lot too. Of course I will tag SQLVariant.

• Compiling zip component for PHP 5.2.11 in MAMP PRO

  Helo I installed MAMP PRO on my Macbook Pro (10.6) some time ago. Now I would like to use zip functions in php. I found that I must add zip.so to my extension folder and edited php.ini. On my computer I have two different versions of PHP one in MAMP folder and other in user/lib which was pre-installed on my system. Now I wish to compile my zip library for MAMP version. I got zip sources for my version of PHP then in terminal called function /Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/bin/phpize so it uses mamp php version ./configure make then I moved compile zip.so to extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613. When MAMP is launched it returns this error: [11-Apr-2010 16:33:27] PHP Warning: PHP Startup: zip: Unable to initialize module Module compiled with module API=20090626, debug=0, thread-safety=0 PHP compiled with module API=20060613, debug=0, thread-safety=0 These options need to match in Unknown on line 0 Can some body explain to me how to do this the right way.

• Install both 64-bit and 32-bit JDK on a 64-bit windows?

  I need to use a java library that uses native code requiring a 32-bit jvm. I have 64-bit windows with 64-bit eclipse installed with 64-bit JDK7. In order to develop with it, do I need to have 32-bit JDK? Or would the JRE suffice? If it is possible to install both, what is the naming convention you use for the installation directory for the 32-bit jre or jdk? I have heard rumors there is a performance hit on virtual memory if both are installed, is this true?

  The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a popular file format for documents. Due to their ubiquity and layout capabilities, it's not uncommon for a websites to use PDF technology. For example, an eCommerce store may offer a "printable receipt" option that, when selected, displays a PDF file within the browser. Last week's article, Filling in PDF Forms with ASP.NET and iTextSharp, looked at how to work with a special kind of PDF document, namely one that has one or more fields defined. The files selected may exceed the server's upload size limit. If you are transfering a large group of files, try uploading fewer at a time." however web-application owners are able to upload the file. what would be the issue, any thoughts? • Proper use of disk to disk to tape backup using de-duplication and LTO5

  I currently have ~12TB of data for a full disk to tape (LTO3) backup. Needless to say, it's now requiring over 16 tapes so I'm looking at other solutions. Here is what I've come up with. I'd like to hear the community's thoughts. Server for Disk-to-Disk BackupExec 2010 Using De-duplication Technology 20+TB worth of SATA drives LTO5 robotic library connected via SAS 1Gbps NIC connected to network What I envision is doing a full backup of my entire network which will initially take a long time over the 1Gbps NIC but once the de-duplication kicks in backups should be quick. I will then use the LTO5 to make disk to tape backups and archive those accordingly. What does everyone think? Any faster way of doing the initial full backup over the 1Gbps NIC? What will be my pain points? Is there a better way of doing what I'm trying to achieve?

• Munq is for web, Unity is for Enterprise

  The Unity Application Block (Unity) is a lightweight extensible dependency injection container with support for constructor, property, and method call injection. It’s a great library for facilitating Inversion of Control and the recent version supports AOP as well. However, when it comes to performance, it’s CPU hungry. In fact it’s so CPU hungry that it makes it impossible to make it work at Internet Scale. I was investigating some CPU issue on a portal that gets around 3MM hits per day and I found unusually high CPU. Here’s why: I did some CPU profiling on my open source project Dropthings and found that the highest CPU is consumed by Unity’s Resolve<>(). There’s no funky use of Unity in the project. Straightforward Register<>() and Resolve<>(). But as you can see, Resolve<>() is consuming significantly high CPU even after the site is warm and has been running for a while. Then I tried Munq, which is a basic Dependency Injection Container. It has everything you will usually need in a regular project. It boasts to be the fastest DI out there. So, I converted all Unity code to Munq in Dropthings and did a CPU profile and Whala!   There’s no trace of any Munq calls anywhere. That proves Munq is a lot faster than Unity.

• IPsec tunnel to Android device not created even though there is an IKE SA

  I'm trying to configure a VPN tunnel between an Android device running 4.1 and a Fedora 17 Linux box running strongSwan 5.0. The device reports that it is connected and strongSwan statusall returns that there is an IKE SA, but doesn't display a tunnel. I used the instructions for iOS in the wiki to generate certificates and configure strongSwan. Since Android uses a modified version of racoon this should work and since the connection is partly established I think I am on the right track. I don't see any errors about not being able to create the tunnel. • I Could Sure Use Some Windows Azure Code Samples…

  There are multiple ways to learn, and one of the most effective is with examples. You have multiple options with Windows Azure, including the Software Development Kit, the Windows Azure Training Kit and now another one…. the Microsoft All-In-One Code Framework,, a free, centralized code sample library driven by developers' real-world pains and needs. The goal is to provide customer-driven code samples for all Microsoft development technologies, and Windows Azure is included. Once you hit the site, you download an EXE that will create a web-app based installer for a Code Browser.   Once inside, you can configure where the samples store data and other settings, and then search for what you want.   You can also request a sample – if enough people ask, we do it. OneCode also partnered with gallery and Visual Studio team to develop this Sample Browser Visual Studio extension.  It’s an easy way for developers to find and download samples from within Visual Studio.

• PASS Summit 2011 &ndash; Part IV

  This is the final blog for my PASS Summit 2011 series.  Well okay, a mini-series, I guess. On the last day of the conference, I attended Keith Elmore’ and Boris Baryshnikov’s (both from Microsoft) “Introducing the Microsoft SQL Server Code Named “Denali” Performance Dashboard Reports, Jeremiah Peschka’s (blog|twitter) “Rewrite your T-SQL for Great Good!”, and Kimberly Tripp’s (blog|twitter) “Isolated Disasters in VLDBs”. Keith and Boris talked about the lifecycle of a session, figuring out the running time and the waiting time.  They pointed out the transient nature of the reports.  You could be drilling into it to uncover a problem, but the session may have ended by the time you’ve drilled all of the way down.  Also, the reports are for troubleshooting live problems and not historical ones.  You can use Management Data Warehouse for historical troubleshooting.  The reports provide similar benefits to the Activity Monitor, however Activity Monitor doesn’t provide context sensitive drill through. One thing I learned in Keith’s and Boris’ session was that the buffer cache hit ratio should really never be below 87% due to the read-ahead mechanism in SQL Server.  When a page is read, it will read the entire extent.  So for every page read, you get 7 more read.  If you need any of those 7 extra pages, well they are already in cache.  I had a lot of fun in Jeremiah’s session about refactoring code plus I learned a lot.  His slides were visually presented in a fun way, which just made for a more upbeat presentation.  Jeremiah says that before you start refactoring, you should look at your system.  Investigate missing or too many indexes, out-of-date statistics, and other areas that could be leading to your code running slow.  He talked about code standards.  He suggested using common abbreviations for aliases instead of one-letter aliases.  I’m a big offender of one-letter aliases, but he makes a good point.  He said that join order does not matter to the optimizer, but it does matter to those who have to read your code.  Now let’s get into refactoring! Eliminate useless things – useless/unneeded joins and columns.  If you don’t need it, get rid of it! Instead of using DISTINCT/JOIN, replace with EXISTS Simplify your conditions; use UNION or better yet UNION ALL instead of OR to avoid a scan and use indexes for each union query Branching logic – instead of IF this, IF that, and on and on…use dynamic SQL (sp_executesql, please!) or use a parameterized query in the application Correlated subqueries – YUCK! Replace with a join Eliminate repeated patterns Last, but certainly not least, was Kimberly’s session.  Kimberly is my favorite speaker.  I attended her two-day pre-conference seminar at PASS Summit 2005 as well as a SQL Immersion Event last December.  Did I mention she’s my favorite speaker?  Okay, enough of that. Kimberly’s session was packed with demos.  I had seen some of it in the SQL Immersion Event, but it was very nice to get a refresher on these, especially since I’ve got a VLDB with some growing pains.  One key takeaway from her session is the idea to use a log shipping solution with a load delay, such as 6, 8, or 24 hours behind the primary.  In the case of say an accidentally dropped table in a VLDB, we could retrieve it from the secondary database rather than waiting an eternity for a restore to complete.  Kimberly let us know that in SQL Server 2012 (it finally has a name!), online rebuilds are supported even if there are LOB columns in your table.  This will simplify custom code that intelligently figures out if an online rebuild is possible. There was actually one last time slot for sessions that day, but I had an airplane to catch and my kids to see!

  I'm a new VS user. I've received some sample C++ projects working with a 3rd party API. They were saved in VS2012 format, but I have VS 2013. After conversion I find that there is an API specific macro defined in the project properties in the "Linker|General|Additional Library Directories" category. If I click on 'edit' I can replace the macro with an actual path, but how do I establish what the macro points to? In other words, how does one create a macro usable in multiple projects?

• Is it possible to create a read-only user account for security auditing purposes?

  An organization requires several administrators to have a role of a security auditor. They must have read-only (via network/remote) access to Windows Server 2008 / R2 systems and have permissions to view the server configuration. They must not be able to make any other changes to the server or the network, like restarting or making any configuration chanages. However I can't find any built-in settings for a user like this. The closest thing is the "Users" user group [1], however from my understanding every user in the domain is in this group and cannot view the domain server's configuration. • To Delete a tape from the ACSLSlibrary

  Hi Anyone there can help me out for an issue as below: There was a stuck tape in the drive and so the stuck tape was removed, but i need to logically delete the tape entry from NB, so that the same media can be inserted back for operations. Netback thinks that the tape is still in that location, hence it should be removed so that the entry is not there and NB does not recognise that the tape in that location, so the same tape can be taken in through inventory. The NB used is NB5.1 Any command to delete this entry, this is a clustered based Environment (Active/Passive), and we use a ACSLS library (Physical) as well a Switch-SN6000(Logical) Kindly help me out as when we tried to delete the media from GUI it said- Could not delete- Cannot delete assigned volume (92).
