  Hi, We're developing a layered web application. The specs: 3 layers, data layer, business layer, ui layer. Programmed in C# Data Layer uses the entity framework Currently we plan on having the data layer return IEnumerable<T> to the business layer via linq 2 entities, and the business layer will return data to the ui layer. Since the ui layer has no knowledge of the existance of the data layer, how would it handle a result of IEnumerable passed to it from the BLL, where T is defined in the data layer? Are there any GOOD example out there on how to do this. Please note that I'm extremely new to factories / interfaces / abstraction to loosely couple layers. I saw the question here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/917457/passing-data-in-an-ntier-application and it was recommended to have the entity layer shared amongst all layers... however I do not want the other layers to be able to query the database.

To prevent duplicate keys being created e.g. &pid=12&pid=10, I am researching methods of rewriting the URL: a) mysite.com/mypage.aspx/red/green/blue b) mysite.com/mypage.aspx?controlname=a,red|b,green|c,blue Pages using this structure would be publishing content that I would like to get indexed and ranked - articles and products (8,000 products to start, with thousands more being added later) My gut instinct tells me to go with the first method, but would it would be overkill to add all that infrastructure if the second method will accomplish my goal of getting pages indexed AND ranked. So my question, looking at the pro's and con's, Google Ranking, time to implement etc. which method should I use? Thanks!

  Hi, I have some problems retrieving specific tuples. I am actually a student trying to build a Room management system. I have two tables: Room(roomID,hotelname,rate) and Reservation(resID,arriveDate,departDate,roomID). I am not sure how to retrieve the rooms that are available between 2 specific dates. This was the query that i used. SELECT Room.roomID,hotelname,rate FROM Room LEFT JOIN Reservation on ( Room.roomID=Reservation.resID and arriveDate >='2010-02-16' and departDate <='2010-02-20' ) GROUP BY roomID,hotelname,rate HAVING count(*)=0;' but it returns an empty set.   I have a form on my site. The user enters their e-mail and selects a location from a dropdown. I then need to post that data to an external site by hitting a url with the user's location and e-mail in the query string. I'm doing this like so: string url = "http://www.site.com/page.aspx?location=" + location.Text + "&email=" + email.Text; HttpWebRequest request = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(url); HttpWebResponse response = (HttpWebResponse)request.GetResponse(); My client says that I am not hitting their server, but when going through the debugger, I'm getting a response from their server. I also tried tracking what was happening by using Firebug, and I noticed that there was no POST made to that external site. What am I doing wrong here?

  I am using will_paginate for pagination but I can't seem to use more than one condition at a time. For example, if I want to have a sql query that ends in "Where office_id = 5", then it's pretty straight forward, I can do that. but what if I want to do "Where office_id = 5 AND primary_first = 'Mark'"? I can't do that. I have no idea how to enter multiple conditions. Can you help??   I'm coding to search data by compare datetime. In web form, user input value '2012-06-04' store in $_REQUEST['dateSearch']. I create datetime object from that: $dateObj = date_create_from_format("Y-m-d",$_REQUEST['dateSearch']); $dateParam = $dateObj->format("Y-m"); Then I use $dateParam in sql query to find data $sql = " SELECT * FROM `temp` as `t` WHERE `t`.`date` LIKE '$dateParam%' "; Everything is ok, but I'm not sure mySQL alway use only one datetime format "Y-m-d H:i:s". At here, $dateParam = $dateObj->format("Y-m"); I set default format is "Y-m". Is the default format never change? I don't want hard set format "Y-m-d H:i:s" in code, instead of, I think get format string from system to use is better. How do I get default datetime format string from mySQL???

  How can i use regular expressions with linq to sql in the asp.net mvc(C#) application? The columns in my MSSQL table (Products) has some special characters like (, - % ',.....). While searching for a product i need to search without that special chareters. For ex.: I have a product say (ABC-Camp's / One), when i search for "abccamp", it should pull the product.   My code in asp classic, doing a mssql database query: rs.pagesize = 1000 ' this should enable paging rs.maxrecords = 0 ' 0 = unlimited maxrecords response.write "hello world 1<br>" rs.open strSql, conn response.write "hello world 2<br>" My output when there are fewer than 1000 rows returned is good. More than 1000 rows and I don't get the "hello world 2". I thought that setting pagesize sets up paging and thus allows all rows to be returned regardless of how many rows there are. Without setting pagesize, paging is not enable and the limit is 1000 rows. However my page is acting as if pagesize is not working at all. Please advise.

  I new to OLAP, and still not sure how to create a relationship between 2 or more entities. I am basing my cube on views. For simplicity sake let's call them like this: viewParent (ParentID PK) viewChild (ChildID PK, ParentID FK) these views have more fields, but they're not important for this question. in my data source, i defined a relationship between viewParent and viewChild using ParentID for the link. As for measures, i was forced to create separate measures for Parent and Child. in my MDX query however, the relationship does not seem to be enforced. If i select record count for parent, child, and add some filters for the parent, the child count is not reflecting it.. SELECT { [Measures].[ParentCount],[Measures].[ChildCount] } ON COLUMNS FROM [Cube] WHERE { ( {[Time].[Month].&[2011-06-01T00:00:00]} ,{[SomeDimension].&[Foo]} ) } the selected ParentCount is correct, but ChildCount is not affected by any of the filters (because they are parent filters). However, since i defined a relationship, how can i take advantage of that to filter children by parent filter?

• Checking for duplicates with nested forms

  I'm making a rails 3.2.9 app that allows users to create pages and they can embed youtube videos through a nested form. I'm trying to figure out how to make it so that I can prevent duplicate video records from being stored in my db. So I have a Video model that takes the youtube url and just parses out the video id and stores that instead of the full user submitted youtube url, which may have extraneous url query parameters. So here's the situation that I'm trying to figure out: There's page1 with video1 - url: 123 and video2 - url: abc Then another user creates page2 and submits video3 - url: def and video4 - url: 123 Currently each page has_many videos. But I think I should change it to a many-to-many relationship. But how would I make it so that the url submitted as video4 in the nested form points to video1? Also I how would I make a nested form that creates objects that are connected through a join table?

• How SqlDataAdapter works internally?

  I wonder how SqlDataAdapter works internally, especially when using UpdateCommand for updating a huge DataTable (since it's usually a lot faster that just sending sql statements from a loop). Here is some idea I have in mind : It creates a prepared sql statement (using SqlCommand.Prepare()) with CommandText filled and sql parameters initialized with correct sql types. Then, it loops on datarows that need to be updated, and for each record, it updates parameters values, and call SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery(). It creates a bunch of SqlCommand objects with everything filled inside (CommandText and sql parameters). Several SqlCommands at once are then batched to the server (depending of UpdateBatchSize). It uses some special, low level or undocumented sql driver instructions that allow to perform an update on several rows in a effecient way (rows to update would need to be provided using a special data format and a the same sql query (UpdateCommand here) would be executed against each of these rows).

  I'm trying construct a PostgreSQL query that does the following but so far my efforts have been in vain. Problem: There are two tables: A and B. I'd like to select all columns from table A (having columns: id, name, description) and substitute the "A.name" column with the value of the column "B.title" from table B (having columns: id, table_A_id title, langcode) where B.table_A_id is 5 and B.langcode is "nl" (if there are any rows). I've tried using a CASE and COALESCE() but failed due to my inexperience with both concepts. Thanks in advance.

  There are a lot of articles devoted to working with data in MVC, and nothing about MVC 2. So my question is: what is the proper way to handle POST-query and validate it. Assume we have 2 actions. Both of them operates over the same entity, but each action has it's own separated set of object properties that should be bound in automatic manner. For example: Action "A" should bind only "Name" property of object, taken from POST-request Action "B" should bind only "Date" property of object, taken from POST-request As far as I understand - we cannot use Bind attribute in this case. So - what are the best practices in MVC2 to handle POST-data and probably validate it.

I want my District dropdown to have a "Select All" option so the user can get all Cities in the Region, else just display the City based on the selected District.   Hi Gurus, This is with reference to this question where I got one tabular report format. I need to update the user entered values correctly back to the same table rows. I am in the process of doing this by using general form post data methods by using some logics which I think will not be easy to maintain. So, just out of curiosity, Is there a front end creator javascript libraries or frameworks which can create the front end for any query's resultset and updates the corresponding rows when the user updates them from front end. This need not have all the full functionality, any one usable, customizable thing will reduce the code maintenance problems. I have googled for some javascript libraris for this but not able to get which will be suitable. Please suggest any useful tools. My environment is Mysql, PHP, JQuery, XAMPP server on Windows. • What's the best way to test MSSQL connection programmatically?

  I need to develop a single routine that will be fired each 5 minutes to check if a list of MSSQL servers (10 to 12) are up and running. I can try to obtain a simple query in each one of the servers but this means that I have to create a table, view or stored procedure in every server, even if I use any already made SP I need to have a registered user in each server too. The servers are not in the same phisical location so having those requirements would be a complex task. Is there a way to simply "ping" from c# one MSSQL server? Thanks in advance!

  I am experimenting with SQL Server full text search. I have a simple Categories table with Id as the primary key: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Category]( [Id] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [CategoryName] [varchar](100) NOT NULL, ) My Query is: SELECT * FROM FREETEXTTABLE (Category, CategoryName, 'music') AS F INNER JOIN Category C ON F.[Key] = C.Id ORDER BY F.Rank DESC This returns me several records with the word music in them, but it does NOT return any record with word ‘musical’. Although, it can be said that the string being searched is not very big and using the LIKE operator will resolve it. I would like to use fulltext search because this simple example is going to be extended to include other tables and fileds.
