• Django Template - Convert python list into a javascript object

  I am working on a django / python website I have a page where I want to display a table of search results The list of results is passed in to the template as normal I also want to make this list of objects accessible to the javascript code My first solution was just create another view that returned json format. But each page load required calling the query twice. So then I tried only downloading the data using the json view and printing the table using javascript. but this is also not desirable as now the presentation layer is mixed into the javascript code. is there a way to create a javascript object from the python list as the page is rendered?

• Problem with joining to an empty table

  I use the following query: select * from A LEFT JOIN B on ( A.t_id != B.t_id) to get all the records in A that are not in B. The results are fine except when table B is completely empty, but then I do not get any records, even from table A. Later It wont work yet!   While trying to use the Bing API to search, I am getting characters that are not printable and do not seem to hold any extra information. The goal is to save the XML (UTF-8) response as a text file to be parsed later.   AJAX autocomplete is fairly simple to implement. However, I wonder how to handle smart tag suggestion like this on SO. To clarify the difference between autocomplete and suggestion: autocomplete: foo [foobar, foobaz] suggestion: foo [barfoo, foobar, foobaz], or even better, with 'did you mean' feature: [barfoo, foobar, foobaz, fobar, fobaz] I suppose I need some full text search in tags (all letters indexed, not just words). There would be no problem to do it witch regex or other patterns for limited number of tags (even client side). But how to implement this feature for big number of tags? Is there any particular reason (besides URL) the tags on SO are dash separated? What about Unicode characters in tags? I store the tags in the table with the following columns: id, tagname. • If I'm projecting with linq and not using a range variable what is the proper syntax?

  I have a query that sums and aggregates alot of data something like this: var anonType = from x in collection let value = collection.Where(c=>c.Code == "A") select new { sum = value.Sum(v=>v.Amount) }; I find it really weird that I have to declare the range variable x, especially if I'm not using it. So, am I doing something wrong or is there a different format I should be following? Also, keep in mind that anonType has about 15 different properties that are all types of aggregates (sums,counts, etc). So I couldn't do something like: int x = collection.Where(c=>c.Code == "A").Sum(v=>v.Amount);

• JQUERY AJAX, Issues with spaces being sent to the server, Why?

  I'm using the following code to post to the server which is then sent to a MYSQL query to find matches via search. $.ajax({ url: '/search/spotlight/', data: "q=" + $(this).val(), success: function(data) { } }); When Q's val has spaces in it, it's creating problems. I'm wondering if I'm handling this correctly? Do I need to encode the value in the AJAX call? Or is this a problem on my backend, which is ColdFusion Right now JQUERY is posting the following to the server: /search/spotlight/?q=FirstName%20LastName is this right?

• Username correct, password incorrect?

  In a login system, how can you tell if the user has entered the password incorrectly? Do you perform two SQL queries, one to find the username, and then one to find the username and matching (salted+hashed etc) password? I'm asking this because If the user entered the password incorrectly, I want to update the failed_login_attempts column I have. If you perform two queries wouldn't that increase overhead? If you did a query like this, how would you tell if the password entered was correct or not, or whether the username doesn't exist: SELECT * FROM author WHERE username = '$username' AND password = '$password' LIMIT 1 ( ^ NB: I'm keeping it simple, will use hash and salt, and will sanitize input in real one.)   I've looked around and can't quite grasp the whole answer to this SQL query question needed to extract data from an MS Access 2000 table.   Can we get a list of basic optimization techniques going (anything from modeling to querying, creating indexes, views to query optimization). It would be nice to have a list of these, one technique per answer. As a hobbyist I would find this to be very useful, thanks. And for the sake of not being too vague, let's say we are using a maintstream DB such as MySQL or Oracle, and that the DB will contain 500,000-1m or so records across ~10 tables, some with foreign key contraints, all using the most typical storage engines (eg: InnoDB for MySQL). And of course, the basics such as PKs are defined as well as FK contraints.

• No mapping for LONGVARCHAR in Hibernate 3.2

  I am running Hibernate 3.2.0 with MySQL 5.1. After updating the group_concat_max_len in MySQL (because of a group_concat query that was exceeding the default value), I got the following exception when executing a SQLQuery with a group_concat clause: "No Dialect mapping for JDBC type: -1" -1 is the java.sql.Types value for LONGVARCHAR. Evidently, increasing the group_concat_max_len value causes calls to group_concat to return a LONGVARCHAR value. This appears to be an instance of this bug: http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HHH-3892 I guess there is a fix for this issue in Hibernate 3.5, but that is still a development version, so I am hesitant to put it into production, and don't know if it would cause issues for other parts of my code base. I could also just use JDBC queries, but then I have to replace every instance of a SQLQuery with a group_concat clause. Any other suggestions?

  Hi, I'm starting to develop an activity stream. I've read both How to implement the activity stream in a social network and What’s the best manner of implementing a social activity stream?. What I haven't found is the best way to add comments to the activities. As in facebook, each comment can be commented by another person. If each activity comment is saved as another activity, then I would not be able to get the activity of that comment without doing a query. So the solution I'm thinking is to save the comments inside the serialize data field of each activity. If the user wants to delete his comment, I would have to update that activity. Is this the correct solution? Is there a better approach? Thanks!

  Hi All, I am trying to delete rows from a table ("lovalarm") where a field ("pointid") is like any one of a number of strings. Currently I am entering them all manually however I need to be able to have a list of over 100,000 options. My thoughts are to have a table ("lovdata") containing all possible strings and running a query to delete rows where the field is 'like' any of the strings in the other table. I have the following basic function: CREATE FUNCTION dbo.fn_GetWinsYear (@Year int) RETURNS int AS BEGIN declare @W int select @W = count(1) from tblGames where WinLossForfeit = 'W' and datepart(yyyy,Date) = @Year return @W END I'm trying to run the following basic query: select dbo.fn_GetWinsYear(datepart(yyyy,date)) from tblGames group by datepart(yyyy,date) However, I'm encountering the following error message: Column 'tblGames.Date' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause. Any ideas why this is occurring? FYI, I know I can remove the function and combine into one call but I'd like to keep the function in place if possible.

• MySQL returns fewer rows with GROUP BY statement

  I've got a MySQL database that stores image information. Right now it only has three rows stored in the database, and each row is associated with something like, for instance, a unique blog post via a key column. As of right now, one "blog post key" has one image, and one has two images in the database. When I run this query, MySQL returns all three rows. SELECT `id`, `key`, `url` FROM (`images`) WHERE `key` = 'TpaS4G5h' OR `key` = '78855e44' However, when i add the GROUP BY statement I only get two rows... one for each key. SELECT `id`, `key`, `url` FROM (`images`) WHERE `key` = 'TpaS4G5h' OR `key` = '78855e44' GROUP BY `key` I'm sure there is a simple solution, but I don't know what it is... so any help would be really appreciated.
