  • Why am i getting same values of different JSON date values?

    - by Maxood
    I do not know the reason why am i getting same values of different JSON date values. Here is my code for parsing date values in JSON date format: package com.jsondate.parsing; import java.text.SimpleDateFormat; import java.util.Date; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.util.Log; import android.widget.TextView; public class JSONDateParsing extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ String myString; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); TextView tv = new TextView(this); //Date d = (new Date(1266029455L)); //Date d = (new Date(1266312467L)); Date d = (new Date(1266036226L)); //String s = d.getDate() + "-" + d.getMonth() + "-" + d.getYear() + d.getHours() + d.getMinutes() + d.getSeconds(); // SimpleDateFormat sdf=new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy MMM dd @ hh:mm aa"); //Toast.makeText(this, d.toString(), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT); Log.e("Value:", d.toString()); myString = d.toString(); String []words = myString.split(" "); for(int i = 0;i < words.length; i++) Log.e("Value:", words[i]); myString = words[2] + "-" + words[1] + "-" + words[5] + " " + words[3]; tv.setText(myString); setContentView(tv); } }

  • A scheme for expiring downloaded content?

    - by Chad Johnson
I am going to offer a web API service that allows users to download and "rent" content for a monthly subscription fee. The API will either be open to everyone or possibly just select parties (not sure yet). Each developer must agree to a license, and they receive a developer key for their person. Each software application will have its own key as well. So then end-users will download the software which will interact with my service's API. Each user will have a key for each application as well (probably using OAuth). Content will be cached on first download and accessible offline via just the third-party application that cached the content. If a user cancels their subscription, I plan on doing the following: Deactivate the user's OAuth key for all applications. Do not allow the user's account to download new content via the API (and subsequently any software that uses the API). Now, the big question is: how do I make content expire if they cancel their subscription? If they cancel, they should not have access to content anymore. Here are ideas I've thought of (some of these are half-solutions, not yet fully fleshed out): Require that applications encrypt downloaded content using the user's OAuth key, making it available to only the application. This will prevent most users from going to the cache directory and just copying and keeping files. Update the user's key once a month, forcing content to re-cache on a monthly basic. Users could then access content for a month after they cancel their subscription. Require applications to "phone home" [to the service] periodically and check whether the user's subscription has terminated. If so, require in the API developer license that applications expire cache. If it is found that applications do not comply, their keys (and possibly keys for all developers) are permanently deactivated as a consequence. One major worry is that some applications may blatantly ignore constraints of the license. Is it generally acceptable to rely on applications abiding by the licensing constraints? Bad idea? Any other ideas? Maybe a way to make content auto-expire after x days? Something else? I'm open to out-of-the-box ideas.

  • Attaching event on the fly with prototype

    - by andreas
Hi, I've been scratching my head over this for an hour... I have a list of todo which has done button on each item. Every time a user clicks on that, it's supposed to do an Ajax call to the server, calling the marking function then updates the whole list. The problem I'm facing is that the new list has done buttons as well on each item. And it doesn't attach the click event anymore after first update. How do you attach an event handler on newly updated element with prototype? Note: I've passed evalScripts: true to the updater wrapper initial event handler attach <script type="text/javascript"> document.observe('dom:loaded', function() { $$('.todo-done a').each(function(a) { $(a).observe('click', function(e) { var todoId = $(this).readAttribute('href').substr(1); new Ajax.Updater('todo-list', $.utils.getPath('/todos/ajax_mark/done'), { onComplete: function() { $.utils.updateList({evalScripts: true}); } }); }); }) }); </script> updateList: <script type="text/javascript"> var Utils = Class.create({ updateList: function(options) { if(typeof options == 'undefined') { options = {}; } new Ajax.Updater('todo-list', $.utils.getPath('/todos/ajax_get'), $H(options).merge({ onComplete: function() { $first = $('todo-list').down(); $first.hide(); Effect.Appear($first, {duration: 0.7}); new Effect.Pulsate($('todo-list').down(), {pulses: 1, duration: 0.4, queue: 'end'}); } }) ); } }) $.utils = new Utils('globals'); </script> any help is very much appreciated, thank you :)

I want users#new and tasks#index to display as the root path URL, i.e. / When a user logs in on the path users#new (set as root) they are redirected to tasks#index and URL does not change. Can this be done in the routes.rb file? This is my routes.rb file: Todo::Application.routes.draw do resources :sessions resources :subscriptions resources :users resources :tasks do collection do post :sort end end root :to => "users#new" match "sessions#new" => "tasks#index" match "sessions#" => "tasks#index"

  • Android GridView - How to change a bitmap dynamically?

    - by Alborz
    Hello I have a gridView which I use to show some pictures on (small thumb of diffrent levels). When the user finishes one level, I would like to change the thumb for that level. (Somehow show that it has been completed). I created two thumbs for each level. One is the original and one that shows that the level is completed. But how can i change the source of the images? The code which I use to draw the images looks like this. The main activity: /** Called when the activity is first created. */ public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.maps); GridView gridview = (GridView) findViewById(R.id.gridview); gridview.setAdapter(new ImageAdapter(this)); gridview.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() { @Override public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View v, int position, long id) { //Open the map which was clicked on, if there is one if(position+1 > 1){ Toast.makeText(maps.this, "Level " + (position+1) + " is not yet available!", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); }else{ Toast.makeText(maps.this, "Opening Level " + (position+1), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); Intent myIntent = new Intent(v.getContext(), Tutorial2D.class); startActivity(myIntent); } } }); } The ImageAdapter Class: public class ImageAdapter extends BaseAdapter { private Context mContext; public ImageAdapter(Context c) { mContext = c; } public int getCount() { return mThumbIds.length; } public Object getItem(int position) { return null; } public long getItemId(int position) { return 0; } // create a new ImageView for each item referenced by the Adapter public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { ImageView imageView; if (convertView == null) { // if it's not recycled, initialize some attributes imageView = new ImageView(mContext); imageView.setLayoutParams(new GridView.LayoutParams(85, 85)); imageView.setScaleType(ImageView.ScaleType.CENTER_CROP); imageView.setPadding(8, 8, 8, 8); } else { imageView = (ImageView) convertView; } //Changing imageView.setImageResource(mThumbIds[position]); return imageView; } // references to our images private Integer[] mThumbIds = { R.drawable.map1, R.drawable.map2, R.drawable.map3, R.drawable.map4, R.drawable.map5, R.drawable.map6, R.drawable.map7, R.drawable.map8, R.drawable.map9, R.drawable.map10, R.drawable.map11, R.drawable.map12, R.drawable.map13, R.drawable.map14, R.drawable.map15, R.drawable.map16, R.drawable.map17, R.drawable.map18, R.drawable.map19 }; }

  • c++ - strange problem with polymorphism - cellular automaton

    - by Green
Hello, I am making "game of life" implementation that, when cell has: two live neighbours I make object of class CCellB two live neighbours I make object of class CCellA when has 3 or <2 I make object of class CCellX (dead) Class CCell is base of CCellA, CCellB, CCellX My problem is: That works fine, until I change new CCell(); to new CCellB();: CCell ***temp = allocateArray(); for(int i = 0; i < n; i++) { for(int j = 0; j < m; j++) { c = arr[i][j]->countAliveNeighbor(); if(c == 3) { temp[i][j] = new CCellA(); temp[i][j]->alive = 1; }else if(c == 2) { temp[i][j] = new CCell(); // HERE, WHEN I CHANGE IT TO CCELLB IT DON'T WORKS temp[i][j]->alive = tab[i][j]->alive; }else if((c >= 4)||(c < 2)) { temp[i][j] = new CCellX(); } } } Then it seems don't work properly... Seems like neighbours are not count properly, Cell with 4,5 neighbours still alive alive var is member of base class - CCell, all is public, please help!

  • AsyncListViewAdapter + SimplePager, why is inactive pager clearing the table?

    - by Jaroslav Záruba
I'm trying to make CellTable work together with AsyncListViewAdapter<T> and SimplePager<T>. The data gets displayed, but when the pager should be 'deaf' (meaning when all existing data are displayed) it still receives clicks and, more importantly, makes the displayed data go away. Instead of my data 'loading' indicator gets displayed, and it keep loading and loading... Obviously nothing gets loaded, as it doesn't even call the onRangeChanged handler. I went through the code-snippets in this thread, but I can't see anything suspicions on what I've been doing. Is there some obvious answer to a rookie mistake? I shrinked my variable names, hopefully it won't wrap too much. protected class MyAsyncAdapter extends AsyncListViewAdapter<DTO> { @Override protected void onRangeChanged(ListView<DTO> v) { /* * doesn't even get called on [go2start/go2end] click :( */ Range r = v.getRange(); fetchData(r.getStart(), r.getLength()); } } private void addTable() { // table: CellTable<DTO> table = new CellTable<DTO>(10); table.addColumn(new Column<DTO, String>(new TextCell()) { @Override public String getValue(DTO myDto) { return myDto.getName(); } }, "Name"); // pager: SimplePager<DTO> pager = new SimplePager<DTO>(table); table.setPager(pager); adapter = new MyAsyncAdapter(); adapter.addView(table); // does not make any difference: // adapter.updateDataSize(0, false); // adapter.updateDataSize(10, true); VerticalPanel vPanel = new VerticalPanel(); vPanel.add(table); vPanel.add(pager); RootLayoutPanel.get().add(vPanel); } // success-handler of my fetching AsyncCallback @Override public void onSuccess(List<DTO> data) { // AsyncCallback<List<DTO>> has start field adapter.updateViewData(start, data.size(), data); if(data.size() < length) adapter.updateDataSize(start + data.size(), true); } Regards J. • Sending and receiving IM messages via controller in Rails

    - by Grnbeagle
Hi, I need a way to handle XMPP communication in my Rails app. My requirements are: Keep an instance of XMPP client running and logged in as one specific user (my bot user) Trigger an event from a controller to send a message and wait for a reply. The message is sent to another machine equipped with a bot so that the reply is supposed to be returned quickly. I installed xmpp4r and backgrounDrb similar to what's described here, but backgrounDrb seems to have evolved and I couldn't get it to wait for a reply. If it has to happen asynchronously, I am willing to use a server-push technology to notify the browser when the reply arrives. To give you a better idea, here are snippets of my code: (In controller) class ServicesController < ApplicationController layout 'simple' def index render :text => "index" end def show @my_service = Service.find(params[:id]) worker = MiddleMan.worker(:jabber_agent_worker) worker.send_request(:arg => {:jid => "someuser@someserver", :cmd => "help"}) render :text => "testing" end end (In worker script) require 'xmpp4r' require 'logger' class JabberAgentWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker set_worker_name :jabber_agent_worker def create(args = nil) jid = Jabber::JID.new('myagent@myserver') @client = Jabber::Client.new(jid) @client.connect @client.auth('pass') @client.send(Jabber::Presence.new.set_show(:chat).set_status('BackgrounDRb')) @client.add_message_callback do |message| logger.info("**** messaged received: #{message}") # never reaches here end end def send_request(args = nil) to_jid = Jabber::JID.new(args[:jid]) message = Jabber::Message::new(to_jid, args[:cmd]).set_type(:normal).set_id('1') @client.send(message) end end If anyone can tell me any of the following, I'd much appreciate it: issue with my backgrounDrb usage other background process alternatives appropriate for XMPP interactions other ways of achieving this Thanks in advance.

  • C#- move a shape to a point which is half way from the top of the form

    - by hello-all
Hello all, Here I have to create a diamond using drawlines method and make it move horizontally along a path that is half way from the top of the form. I created a diamond and it is moving horizontally, but i want it to start moving from a position which is half way from the top of the form. This is the code to create a diamond, private void Form1_Paint(object sender, PaintEventArgs e) { Graphics g = e.Graphics; Point p1 = new Point(5+x, 0); Point p2 = new Point(10+x, 5); Point p3 = new Point(5+x, 10); Point p4 = new Point(0+x, 5); Point[] ps = { p1, p2, p3, p4, p1 }; Pen p_yellow = new Pen(Color.Yellow, 5); g.DrawLines(p_yellow, ps); this.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.DarkBlue; } I can make it move using the timer and following is the code, private void timer1_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (x < 500) x += 2; else timer1.Enabled = false; this.Invalidate(); } please tell me how to bring the diamond to a point which is half way from the top of the form?

  • ASP.NET MVC CRUD PartialView Popup Issue

    - by Smiley Face
I am creating an MVC website which makes use of Partial Views on Popups to handle all my CRUD transactions. Please note that my application can already handle these CRUD operations perfectly (LINQ-To-Entity). However, I have a problem with my popup forms. Below is the code from my _Add.cshtml: @model MyStore.Models.MyModels.ProductsModel @{ Layout = null; } @using (Ajax.BeginForm("_Add", "Products", new AjaxOptions { InsertionMode = InsertionMode.Replace, HttpMethod = "POST", OnSuccess = "addSuccess" }, new { @id = "addForm" })) { @Html.ValidationSummary(true) <div id="add-message" class="error invisible"></div> <fieldset> <legend>Products</legend> @Html.HiddenFor(m => Model.ProductCode) <div class="editor-label"> @Html.LabelFor(model => model.ProductName) </div> <div class="editor-field"> @Html.EditorFor(model => model.ProductName) @Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.ProductName) </div> <div class="editor-label"> @Html.LabelFor(model => model.Price) </div> <div class="editor-field"> @Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.Price) @Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.Price) </div> </fieldset> } Below is the code from my Controller: [HttpGet] public ActionResult _Add(string productCode) { ProductsModel model = newProductsModel(); model.ProductCode = ProductCode ; return PartialView(model); } [HttpPost] public JsonResult _Add(ProductsModel model) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { ProductsManager prod = new ProductsManager(); Products pa = new Products(); pa.ProductCode = model.ProductCode; pa.ProductName = model.ProductName; pa.Price = model.Price; prod.AddProduct(pa); return Json(HelperClass.SuccessResponse(pa), JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet); } else { return Json(HelperClass.ErrorResponse("Please review your form"), JsonRequestBehavior.DenyGet); } } Please note that the _Add.cshtml is a partial view which is being rendered through a Popup.js which I found on the internet. It is rendered through this code: @Html.ActionLink("[Add Product]", "_Add", new { ProductCode = @ViewData["ProductCode"] }, new { @class = "editLink" }) This works okay. I mean it adds product to my database. But my problem is upon clicking the Proceed button, I get this pop-up download dialog from the page: Can somebody please help me with this? I have a hunch it's because of the HttpMethod i'm using (POST, PUT, GET, DELETE) but i'm not really sure which one is right to use or if it really is the problem in the first place. Any help would be greatly appreciated! PS. Sorry for the long post.

  • Should I integrate FedEx or UPS into my Rails app?

    - by MikeH
I'm working on integrating a shipping solution into a Rails ecommerce app. We're only going to use one shipping provider. So the question is: FedEx or UPS? I'm wondering what Rails developers think about the tech side of this question. What do you think about the APIs, ease of integration, focus on developer's needs between FedEx and UPS? I was leaning towards FedEx, but from looking at the developers resources sections of both sites, it seems that UPS might be more developer friendly. Also, I'm going to be using Shopify's active_shipping gem: http://github.com/Shopify/active_shipping And I also based my app off the Spree Ecommerce solution, but I don't think that's particularly relevant to the question. Spree wrote a wrapper to integrate active_shipping with the Spree system. Thanks.

I'm having trouble getting the compressed jpeg image (stored as a blob in my database). here is the snippet of code I use to output the image that I have in my database: if($row = mysql_fetch_array($sql)) { $size = $row['image_size']; $image = $row['image']; if($image == null){ echo "no image!"; } else { header('Content-Type: content/data'); header("Content-length: $size"); echo $image; } } here is the code that I use to read in from the server: URL sizeUrl = new URL(MYURL); URLConnection sizeConn = sizeUrl.openConnection(); // Get The Response BufferedReader sizeRd = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(sizeConn.getInputStream())); String line = ""; while(line.equals("")){ line = sizeRd.readLine(); } int image_size = Integer.parseInt(line); if(image_size == 0){ return null; } URL imageUrl = new URL(MYIMAGEURL); URLConnection imageConn = imageUrl.openConnection(); // Get The Response InputStream imageRd = imageConn.getInputStream(); byte[] bytedata = new byte[image_size]; int read = imageRd.read(bytedata, 0, image_size); Log.e("IMAGEDOWNLOADER", "read "+ read + " amount of bytes"); Log.e("IMAGEDOWNLOADER", "byte data has length " + bytedata.length); Bitmap theImage = BitmapFactory.decodeByteArray(bytedata, 0, image_size); if(theImage == null){ Log.e("IMAGEDOWNLOADER", "the bitmap is null"); } return theImage; My logging shows that everything has the right length, yet theImage is always null. I'm thinking it has to do with my content type. Or maybe the way I'm uploading?

  • C# ref Confusion

I have a confusion that when i pass a variable by refrence in the constructor of another class and after passing that object by refrence i recreate the refrence object with the new keyword. Now the class in which i have passed the refrenced object dosen't reflect the updated data. An exabple of the above problem is shown below: Object to be passed by Refrence: public class DummyObject { public string Name = "My Name"; public DummyObject() { } } Class which is passing the Refrence: public partial class Form1 : Form { // Object to be passed as refrence DummyObject dummyObject = new DummyObject(); public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); } private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { // assigning value dummyObject.Name = "I am Dummy"; // Passing object Form2 frm = new Form2(ref dummyObject); frm.Show(); } private void button2_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Displaying Name MessageBox.Show(this.dummyObject.Name); } private void button3_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Assigning new object this.dummyObject = new DummyObject(); // Changing Name Variable this.dummyObject.Name = "I am Rechanged"; // Displaying Name MessageBox.Show(this.dummyObject.Name); } } Class to which Object is passed by Reference: public partial class Form2 : Form { private DummyObject dummyObject = null; public Form2(ref DummyObject DummyObject) { InitializeComponent(); this.dummyObject = DummyObject; this.dummyObject.Name = "I am Changed"; } private void button2_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { MessageBox.Show(this.dummyObject.Name); } } whn i reaasign the object in Form 1 and cdisplay its value in form 2 it still displays "I am Changed" instead of "I am Rechanged". How to keep the data synchronized?

I'm new to programming and trying to do an exercise that formats a date to the Thai culture in a variety of formats this is what I have for my code so far: public String[] FormatAsSpecified(DateTime theDate, String theCulture, String[] formats) { String[] dateResults = new String[formats.Length]; CultureInfo culture = CultureInfo.GetCultureInfo(theCulture); for (int i = 0; i < formats.Length; i++) { String culture_formatted_date = theDate.ToString(formats[i], culture); dateResults[i] = culture_formatted_date; } return dateResults; } This is the test method that goes with it: [TestMethod] public void FormatAsSpecifiedReturnsDateLiteralsInSpecifiedFormatForAllStandardFormatStrings() { //Arrange var controller = new DateController(); var theDate = new DateTime(2014, 2, 14, 9, 15, 32, 376); String theCulture = "th-TH"; // Array of all supported standard date and time format specifiers. • How to manage sessions in NHibernate unit tests?

    - by Ben
I am a little unsure as to how to manage sessions within my nunit test fixtures. In the following test fixture, I am testing a repository. My repository constructor takes in an ISession (since I will be using session per request in my web application). In my test fixture setup I configure NHibernate and build the session factory. In my test setup I create a clean SQLite database for each test executed. [TestFixture] public class SimpleRepository_Fixture { private static ISessionFactory _sessionFactory; private static Configuration _configuration; [TestFixtureSetUp] // called before any tests in fixture are executed public void TestFixtureSetUp() { _configuration = new Configuration(); _configuration.Configure(); _configuration.AddAssembly(typeof(SimpleObject).Assembly); _sessionFactory = _configuration.BuildSessionFactory(); } [SetUp] // called before each test method is called public void SetupContext() { new SchemaExport(_configuration).Execute(true, true, false); } [Test] public void Can_add_new_simpleobject() { var simpleObject = new SimpleObject() { Name = "Object 1" }; using (var session = _sessionFactory.OpenSession()) { var repo = new SimpleObjectRepository(session); repo.Save(simpleObject); } using (var session =_sessionFactory.OpenSession()) { var repo = new SimpleObjectRepository(session); var fromDb = repo.GetById(simpleObject.Id); Assert.IsNotNull(fromDb); Assert.AreNotSame(simpleObject, fromDb); Assert.AreEqual(simpleObject.Name, fromDb.Name); } } } Is this a good approach or should I be handling the sessions differently? Thanks Ben

  • What is the proper way to code a read-while loop in Scala?

    - by ARKBAN
What is the "proper" of writing the standard read-while loop in Scala? By proper I mean written in a Scala-like way as opposed to a Java-like way. Here is the code I have in Java: MessageDigest md = MessageDigest.getInstance( "MD5" ); InputStream input = new FileInputStream( "file" ); byte[] buffer = new byte[1024]; int readLen; while( ( readLen = input.read( buffer ) ) != -1 ) md.update( buffer, 0, readLen ); return md.digest(); Here is the code I have in Scala: val md = MessageDigest.getInstance( hashInfo.algorithm ) val input = new FileInputStream( "file" ) val buffer = new Array[ Byte ]( 1024 ) var readLen = 0 while( readLen != -1 ) { readLen = input.read( buffer ) if( readLen != -1 ) md.update( buffer, 0, readLen ) } md.digest The Scala code is correct and works, but feels very un-Scala-ish. For one it is a literal translation of the Java code, taking advantage of none of the advantages of Scala. Further it is actually longer than the Java code! I really feel like I'm missing something, but I can't figure out what. I'm fairly new to Scala, and so I'm asking the question to avoid falling into the pitfall of writing Java-style code in Scala. I'm more interested in the Scala way to solve this kind of problem than in any specific helper method that might be provided by the Scala API to hash a file. (I apologize in advance for my ad hoc Scala adjectives throughout this question.)

  • How can I put a horizontal line between vertically ordered elements?

    - by Roman
I have a set of vertically ordered elements. They are displayed with the following code: JPanel myPanel = new JPanel(); myPanel.setLayout(new BoxLayout(myPanel, BoxLayout.Y_AXIS)); JButton button = new JButton("My Button"); JLabel label = new JLabel("My label!!!!!!!!!!!"); myPanel.add(button); myPanel.add(label); I would like to put a horizontal line between my elements (something like <hr> in html). Does anybody know how it can be done?

  • Git remote has master but no HEAD

    - by dwynne
I'm new to Git, so I suspect that I'm misunderstanding something here, but I'll ask anyway. Via TortoiseGit I do the following: Init a new Git repo locally Add a readme file to it and commit Add a new remote Push the new repo to the orgin (remote) If I then Browse Refs I see the following: heads/master remotes/origin/master What I find odd is that I don't see a HEAD on the remotes. If I delete my local repo and then clone it from the server (I just pushed to above) and then browse the refs I see: heads/master remotes/origin/HEAD remotes/origin/master So why don't I see a remote head after the initial push? NB. I've done the same via Git Bash command (ie. not Tortoise Git) and am seeing the same thing.

  • How to add a field from a 2nd form?

    - by PowerUser
Hi all. I'm modifying an existing Lotus view to include a field from another form. I first appended a new column and set it to the desired field. However, after I refreshed, the new column was blank even though I know it has data. I then updated the View Selection formula from: SELECT Form = "A" & StatusIndex < "06" to: SELECT (Form = "A"| Form = "B") & StatusIndex < "06" Still no luck. The view is refreshing successfully, but the new field is still blank. What else is there to add this new column to this view? This is my first time experimenting with Lotus, so if I seem to be missing some major concept, I probably am.

  • Occasional weird Glassfish errors, resolved by a restart?

    - by Pooria
I'm developing a web app using netbeans with GlassFishv3. Every once in a while when I add a new feature in my app, glassfish starts nagging with stupid errors, after a lot of time wasting and panicking, i restart glassfish and run my application again, then suddenly the errors all go away and my site starts acting correctly. (or in case I have made a real mistake, i receive a reasonable & descriptive error from GF.) [Edit: the rest of the question was revealed to have been my own mistake.] But the problems don't end there. Recently, i added the ability to write comments in a (JSF) page, after the user submits their comment, i add it to the database and redirect to the same page, so that hopefully the page refreshes with the new comment, but it wont! The underlying Mysql database shows that the new comment has been added, but the page just wont show the new comment! I've tried everything (e.g. deleting browser cache, using different browsers) but only after restarting GF is when the page shows the new comment! Do you have any idea what the problem could be? Could this be a Glassfish bug? What i am using: JSF2, EJB3.1, JPA, MySql

  • Break a class in twain, or impose an interface for restricted access?

    - by bedwyr
What's the best way of partitioning a class when its functionality needs to be externally accessed in different ways by different classes? Hopefully the following example will make the question clear :) I have a Java class which accesses a single location in a directory allowing external classes to perform read/write operations to it. Read operations return usage stats on the directory (e.g. available disk space, number of writes, etc.); write operations, obviously, allow external classes to write data to the disk. These methods always work on the same location, and receive their configuration (e.g. which directory to use, min disk space, etc.) from an external source (passed to the constructor). This class looks something like this: public class DiskHandler { public DiskHandler(String dir, int minSpace) { ... } public void writeToDisk(String contents, String filename) { int space = getAvailableSpace(); ... } public void getAvailableSpace() { ... } } There's quite a bit more going on, but this will do to suffice. This class needs to be accessed differently by two external classes. One class needs access to the read operations; the other needs access to both read and write operations. public class DiskWriter { DiskHandler diskHandler; public DiskWriter() { diskHandler = new DiskHandler(...); } public void doSomething() { diskHandler.writeToDisk(...); } } public class DiskReader { DiskHandler diskHandler; public DiskReader() { diskHandler = new DiskHandler(...); } public void doSomething() { int space = diskHandler.getAvailableSpace(...); } } At this point, both classes share the same class, but the class which should only read has access to the write methods. Solution 1 I could break this class into two. One class would handle read operations, and the other would handle writes: // NEW "UTILITY" CLASSES public class WriterUtil { private ReaderUtil diskReader; public WriterUtil(String dir, int minSpace) { ... diskReader = new ReaderUtil(dir, minSpace); } public void writeToDisk(String contents, String filename) { int = diskReader.getAvailableSpace(); ... } } public class ReaderUtil { public ReaderUtil(String dir, int minSpace) { ... } public void getAvailableSpace() { ... } } // MODIFIED EXTERNALLY-ACCESSING CLASSES public class DiskWriter { WriterUtil diskWriter; public DiskWriter() { diskWriter = new WriterUtil(...); } public void doSomething() { diskWriter.writeToDisk(...); } } public class DiskReader { ReaderUtil diskReader; public DiskReader() { diskReader = new ReaderUtil(...); } public void doSomething() { int space = diskReader.getAvailableSpace(...); } } This solution prevents classes from having access to methods they should not, but it also breaks encapsulation. The original DiskHandler class was completely self-contained and only needed config parameters via a single constructor. By breaking apart the functionality into read/write classes, they both are concerned with the directory and both need to be instantiated with their respective values. In essence, I don't really care to duplicate the concerns. Solution 2 I could implement an interface which only provisions read operations, and use this when a class only needs access to those methods. The interface might look something like this: public interface Readable { int getAvailableSpace(); } The Reader class would instantiate the object like this: Readable diskReader; public DiskReader() { diskReader = new DiskHandler(...); } This solution seems brittle, and prone to confusion in the future. It doesn't guarantee developers will use the correct interface in the future. Any changes to the implementation of the DiskHandler could also need to update the interface as well as the accessing classes. I like it better than the previous solution, but not by much. Frankly, neither of these solutions seems perfect, but I'm not sure if one should be preferred over the other. I really don't want to break the original class up, but I also don't know if the interface buys me much in the long run. Are there other solutions I'm missing?
