• Should we always prefer OpenGL ES version 2 over version 1.x

  OpengGL ES version 2 goes a long way into changing the development paradigm that was established with OpenGL ES 1.x. You have shaders which you can chain together to apply varios effects/transforms to your elements, the projection and transformation matrices work completly different etc. I've seen a lot of online tutorials and blogs that simply say "ditch version 1.x, use version 2, that's the way to go". Even on Android's documentation it sais to "use version 2 as it may prove faster than 1.x". Now, I've also read a book on OpenGL ES (which was rather good, but I'm not gonna mention here because I don't want to give the impression that I'm trying to make hidden publicity). The guy there treated only OpenGL ES 1.x for 80% of the book, and then at the end only listed the differences in version 2 and said something like "if OpenGL ES 1 does what you need, there's no need to switch to version 2, as it's only gonna over complicate your code. Version 2 was changed a lot to facillitate newer, fancier stuff, but if you don't need it, version 1.x is fine". My question is then, is the last statement right? Should I always use Open GL ES version 1.x if I don't need version 2 only stuff? I'd sure like to do that, because I find coding in version 1.x A LOT simpler than version 2 but I'm afraid that my apps might get obsolete faster for using an older version.

• Google CDN or Akamai

  We combine and minify our JS with Minify - the combined JS is then cached on Akamai. I'm suggesting to my supervisor that we put JQuery and JQueryUI on Google CDN and take it out of our combined JS. The benefits I see are parallel downloads, significantly smaller Akamai cache hit, and the high potential the user will have JQuery from Google CDN cached in his/her browser when he/she visits our site so no download will be required at all. I also pointed out how pointing to the major version CDN URL //ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js will eliminate the need for us to micro-manage our JQuery version control, and that if a new release introduces a bug, we simply point the CDN URL to a stable minor version of our choice until the issue is resolved. My supervisor disagrees and thinks keeping it on Akamai is the way to go. Any insight as to which is going to be faster here? I looked for some benchmarks and references online but they are either out-dated or merely talk about Google wanting to acquire Akamai. EDIT: Some further research has pointed me to an article mentioning how 'latest version' CDN URL's use short expires headers so it might be more optimal to use /jquery/1.7/. I'm fine with this - the general question still remains.

• Notify-osd notifications appear unthemed in top-left corner (ubuntu 13.10)

  Problem I recently upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10, and suddenly notification bubbles don't appear themed as usual in the upper right corner, but they appear as white text on blue background in the upper-left corner. It looks like this: Unsuccesful attempts to fix it I tried reinstalling unity, notify-osd, ubuntu-desktop removed notification-daemon which was installed, none of that fixes it. In fact running ps aux | grep notify-osd shows that notify-osd isn't even running. But when I try to start it manually by running /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/notify-osd I get: ** (notify-osd:4618): WARNING **: Another instance has already registered org.freedesktop.Notifications ** (notify-osd:4618): WARNING **: Could not register instance If I understand well, the instance is registered by the /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service file, which right now contains: [D-BUS Service] Name=org.freedesktop.Notifications Exec=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/notify-osd Renaming or deleting that file (and rebooting) has no effect whatsoever (and it is not recreated automatically). This is not a duplicate of No notifications from notify-osd on 13.10 (and by the way I purged gnome-flashback-session along with notification-daemon) Question(s) How can I debug this? How can I get notifications to come back to normal? If additional debug information is needed, I'll be happy to add it (just that I can't find any more).

• What free Remote Desktop (server) solutions are there?

  I know Ubuntu comes with a "Remote Desktop" option that appears to be a straightforward VNC server, and I'm trying to understand the alternatives. Here are the possibilities I've heard about so far: VNC VNC + SSH Tunnelling NX Server, free edition FreeNX NeatX X2Go X11 Forwarding over SSH xrdp I'm coming at this from a Windows user's perspective: To the best of my experience, RDP (aka Terminal Services) is a reasonably secure (barring mitm/server spoofing), efficient desktop sharing protocol with well-supported clients, that can be exposed to the internet when necessary without major fears of intrusion. To the best of my knowledge straight VNC is none of those things, which is where I get confused - why wouldn't a better desktop sharing technology be developed or used in the open-source world? I know VNC can be wrapped with SSH, but that seems beyond the reach of a casual user. X11 forwarding over SSH may be more or less efficient, I have no idea, but is definitely even more complicated, and doesn't (as far as I know) give you access to already-running stuff (no desktop sharing as such, just remote application running). So, I'd like any feedback/preferences amongst these or any other "Free" desktop sharing options, using these criteria and/or any others: Security (esp. for access across internet) Efficiency (bandwidth usage, responsiveness, etc) Free-ness, as in Speech (not sure where RDP or FreeNX lie for this) Free-ness, as in Beer (are there any commercial solutions with usable dependable free offerings?) Ease of use (server and client side) Cross-OS Client availability Cross-OS Server availability Support for independent sessions and shared (and/or "Console") sessions Ongoing support/maintenance/development Thanks!

• JMS Adapter Step 0 : Configuring the WLS-JMS resources

  Before getting started with the JMS Adapter, we must configure the connection factories/JMS queues on the WLS admin console. In particular, we will be required to follow these stepsCreate a connection factory. In our case, we will create a "XA Connection Factory". This step is mandatory if you need your JMS queues to participate in a global transaction. Create the WLS JMS QueuesCreating the connection factory:1) Login to the WLS Admin console. On my setup, the url looks like "http://localhost:7001/console".2) Select Services -> Messaging -> JMS Modules -> SOAJMSModule as shown below. We can also create a new JMS Module, but, I took the easier way out by selecting the SOAJMSModule. 3) Click on "New" as shown in order to create the Connection factory.4) Select "Connection Factory" radio button and click "Next".5) Enter the Connection Factory properties as shown and click on "Finish".6) Target the connection factory to your managed server and click on "Finish". 7) Now, go back and select the Connection Factory that you've just created (see Step 2 above) . Click on "Transactions" and enable XA and click on "Save".

• Filling in PDF Forms with ASP.NET and iTextSharp

  The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a popular file format for documents. PDF files are a popular document format for two primary reasons: first, because the PDF standard is an open standard, there are many vendors that provide PDF readers across virtually all operating systems, and many proprietary programs, such as Microsoft Word, include a "Save as PDF" option. Consequently, PDFs server as a sort of common currency of exchange. A person writing a document using Microsoft Word for Windows can save the document as a PDF, which can then be read by others whether or not they are using Windows and whether or not they have Microsoft Word installed. Second, PDF files are self-contained. Each PDF file includes its complete text, fonts, images, input fields, and other content. This means that even complicated documents with many images, an intricate layout, and with user interface elements like textboxes and checkboxes can be encapsulated in a single PDF file. Due to their ubiquity and layout capabilities, it's not uncommon for a websites to use PDF technology. For example, when purchasing goods at an online store you may be offered the ability to download an invoice as a PDF file. PDFs also support form fields, which are user interface elements like textboxes, checkboxes, comboboxes, and the like. These form fields can be entered by a user viewing the PDF or, with a bit of code, they can be entered programmatically.   After reading Paul Graham's essay Hackers and Painters and Joel Spolsky's Advice for Computer Science College Students, I think I've finally gotten it through my thick skull that I should not be loath to work hard in academic courses that aren't "programming" or "computer science" courses. To quote the former: I've found that the best sources of ideas are not the other fields that have the word "computer" in their names, but the other fields inhabited by makers. Painting has been a much richer source of ideas than the theory of computation. — Paul Graham, "Hackers and Painters" There are certainly other, much stronger reasons to work hard in the "boring" classes. However, it'd also be neat to know that these classes may someday inspire me in programming. My question is: what are some specific examples where ideas from literature, art, humanities, philosophy, and other fields made their way into programming? In particular, ideas that weren't obviously applied the way they were meant to (like most math and domain-specific knowledge), but instead gave utterance or inspiration to a program's design and choice of names. Good examples: The term endian comes from Gulliver's Travels by Tom Swift (see here), where it refers to the trivial matter of which side people crack open their eggs. The terms journal and transaction refer to nearly identical concepts in both filesystem design and double-entry bookkeeping (financial accounting). mkfs.ext2 even says: Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information: done Off-topic: Learning to write English well is important, as it enables a programmer to document and evangelize his/her software, as well as appear competent to other programmers online. Now, Microsoft has made that job easier with their new Office Add on. With it you can save directly into Moodle.   Here are the instructions on how to use. Just change the URL you use for your Moodle site. 1. Go to this site and download and install the software. http://www.educationlabs.com/projects/officeaddinformoodle/Pages/default.aspx 2. Open your Office Word in this example and then select Save to Moodle (Notice you can also open files that you have stored in moodle make changes and then save back to moodle. The agenda featured an introduction by Ray Wagner, Managing VP at Gartner, followed by Amit discussing the trends in Identity and Access Management shaping Oracle's strategy. Today we are seeing the largest re-architecture in a decade. Every business from manufacturing to retail is transforming the way they do business. Manufacturing companies are becoming manufacturing services companies. Retail organizations are embracing social retail. Healthcare is being delivered on-line around the clock. Identity Management is at the center of the transformation. Whether you are Toyota embracing a social network for cars or launching the next Iphone, the Identity of the user provides context to enable the interaction and secure the experience. All of these require greater attention to the context of the user and externalizing applications for customers and employees.  Ranjan discussed how Cisco is transforming  by integrating 1800 applications to a single access management framework and consolidating 3M users across 4 data centers to support internal and external processes. David Lee demonstrated how to use Oracle Access Manager 11g R2 on a mobile application to sign-on across multiple applications while connecting mobile applications to a single access control policy.

I tried disabling the iptables firewall but I had no success. My server is running behind a Cisco Linksys WRTN310N Router with the DD-wrt firmware Installed. In which I already disabled the firewall. • Solving Kaggle’s Bike Sharing Demand Machine Learning Problem

  Kaggle.com hosts a lot of interesting machine learning problems online and thousands of its members compete to solve them for a bounty. Problems hosted on Kaggle has varying complexity to accomodate newbies to rock star developers – few problems are good enough for  newbies to learn basics of machine learning and few of them challenge the best of machine learning developers. I’m learning basics of machine learning for the past few weeks and had an opportunity to solve Kaggel’s Bike Sharing Demand problem. Bike Sharing systems allows customers to rent a bike (or a cycle as it is called in many part of the world) for several hours and return them back . The problem provides historical information about the demand for bike sharing business and we need to forecast the demand. For more information on the problem, visit Kaggle.com website. Here is the solution I written using random forests algorithm using R programming language and you can download the source code from github.  With this solution I was able to score RMSLE of 0.70117, which placed me somewhere in the mid of the leader board.  This is the best score I could get by spending 4 hours of my time.   Until now, I hadn't heard about Elastic Caching yet. Today I read Mike Gualtieri's Blog entry. I immediately thought about Oracle Coherence and got a little scare throughout the reading. Elastic Caching is the next step after Distributed Caching. As we've always positioned Coherence as a Distributed Cache, I thought for a brief instance that Oracle had missed a new trend/technology. But then I started reading the characteristics of an Elastic Cache. Forrester definition: Software infrastructure that provides application developers with data caching services that are distributed across two or more server nodes that consistently perform as volumes grow can be scaled without downtime provide a range of fault-tolerance levels Hey wait a minute, doesn't Coherence fullfill all these requirements? Oh yes, I think it does! The next defintion in the article is about Elastic Application Platforms. This is mainly more of the same with the addition of code execution. Now there is analytics functionality in Oracle Coherence. The analytics capability provides data-centric functions like distributed aggregation, searching and sorting. Coherence also provides continuous querying and event-handling. I think that when it comes to providing an Elastic Application Platform (as in the Forrester definition), Oracle is close, nearly there. • How can I fix apt-get autoremove wanting to uninstall most of my packages?

  I did change my packages in synaptic from manually installed to Automatically (they were not manually installed but automatically). Now they are marked for Autoremove. I tested it with sudo apt-get autoremove and the result is shown below (a reduced version because its almost all packages). I remember last year I had same issue and solved it via Ubuntu forums but the forum is down and I cannot reach the post!
