How do I redirect output from the Visual Studio debugger?

In Visual Studio 2008, I can specify a message to be printed when a breakpoint is hit (by right-clicking the breakpoint and choosing 'When Hit...'). When the program is run, these messages appear in the Output Window. I would like to know, is there any way to redirect them to a file? Specifying file.txt as a command argument to the program does not work: this redirects the program's output, but not the debugger's. (FWIW the behaviour I wish to achieve is to get the debugger to repeatedly print a variable's value to a file, rather than peppering my code with printf/cout statements.)

How do I "Fire and forget" a WinForms Form?

What's a good technique to create a WinForms Form instance, display it (non-modally) but not have to keep a reference around to it? Normally, as soon as the variable goes out of scope, the form is closed: var form = new SuperDuperForm(); form.Show(); // Form has probably been closed instantly I don't want to have to keep track of instances of the form, I want it so that when the user closes the form, it is disposed. One idea I've had that I'm going to implement is a kind of controller that I use to open and display forms, that will keep track of them and monitor when they are closed via callbacks. I'm just wondering if there are any neat tricks to get away without that. Any ideas?

I'm automatically generating a PDF-file with Platypus that has dynamic content. This means that it might happen that the length of the text content (which is directly at the bottom of the pdf-file) may vary. However, it might happen that a page break is done in cases where the content is too long. This is because i use a "static" spacer: s = Spacer(width=0, height=23.5*cm) as i always want to have only one page, I somehow need to dynamically set the height of the Spacer, so that it takes the "rest" of the space that is on the page as its height. Now, how do i get the "rest" of height that is left on my page?

.NET Application using a native DLL (build management)

I have a .NET app that is dependent on a native DLL. I have the .NET app set as AnyCPU. In the post-build step, I plan to copy the correct native DLL from some directory (x86 or AMD64) and place it in the target path. However, this doesn't work. On a 64-bit machine, the environment variable PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE is "x86" in Visual Studio. My alternative right now is to create a small tool that outputs the processor architecture. This will be used by the post-build step. Is there a better alternative? (Side Note: when deploying/packaging the app, the right native DLL is copied to the right platform. But this means we have two separate release folders for x86 and AMD64, which is OK since this is for a device driver. The app is a utility tool for the driver).

Fade between looped background images using jQuery

I'm trying to get the background image of a legacy div (by which I mean it already has a background image, which I cannot control & thus have to initially over-write) to smoothly fade between new images indefinitely. EDIT2: I'm now using Reigel's answer (see below), which works perfectly, but I still can't find any way to fade between the images smoothly. All help greatfully appreciated :)

How do I get the current color of a fragment?

I'm trying to wrap my head around shaders in GLSL, and I've found some useful resources and tutorials, but I keep running into a wall for something that ought to be fundamental and trivial: how does my fragment shader retrieve the color of the current fragment? You set the final color by saying gl_FragColor = whatever, but apparently that's an output-only value. How do you get the original color of the input so you can perform calculations on it? That's got to be in a variable somewhere, but if anyone out there knows its name, they don't seem to have recorded it in any tutorial or documentation that I've run across so far, and it's driving me up the wall.

Traverse list to add elements using .NET

I have a list of objects. Each object has an integer quantity and a DateTime variable which contains a month and year value. I'd like to traverse the list and pad the list by adding missing months (with quantity 0) so that all consecutive months are represented in the list. What would be the best way to accomplish this? Sign in as different user when using Integrated Windows Authentication

I have restricted access to a site by using Integrated Windows Authentication and turning off anonymous access. This way I can then show them their real name (from looking up on Active Directory and using the server variable LOGON_USER) and do other related Active Directory tasks. How can I then prompt again for their user credentials, through a 'sign in as other user' link , showing the browser prompt (like you would get on a browser like Chrome or Firefox, or if the site was not in the 'Intranet' zone in IE) rather than a Web Form? Since SharePoint offers this functionality, I assume there is a way to do this through code, but I don't know what code can do this (using C#). I can send a 401 header which makes the prompt appear, but how do you then confirm if they are logged in?

Currency Math in JavaScript

Can someone please help me out with a JavaScript/jQuery solution for this arithmetic problem: I need to subtract one number from the other. The problem is that the numbers have a dollar sign (because its money), therefore jQuery is treating them as strings instead of numbers. I have created two variables - toalAssets and totalLiabilites. I would like to subtract the latter from the former and place the result into another variable called netWorth. Perhaps i need to use parseFloat()? But I'm not sure how - This is all a little over my head!

I want to copy then into a array sized n+1 and add into the first position another object and in the other n positions the n data of the list. using Applescript to retrieve movie file duration via Finder properties

When using Get Info on movie files in the Finder, I've noticed that many movie files have an accessible "Duration" property under the More Info tab. Is there an easy way to access this data using Applescript? I've tried lines like "set theTime to (duration of aFile)", but it doesn't seem to be as simple as that. Ideally I'd like to access the movie duration via the Finder properties without having to actually open the file in QuickTime. Is this possible? I tried to do convolution in R directly and using FFTs then taking inverse. But it seems from simple observation it is not correct. How to compile a program which needs a newer version of glib

Hi, I am trying to compile Webkit on Ubuntu 8.04. But when i run autogen.sh, I get the following error saying it needs a newer version of glib. So what is the safest way to install glib without screwing up the rest of my OS (since the rest needs 2.16 while webkit compile needs 2.21)? checking for GLIB... configure: error: Package requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.21.3 gobject-2.0 >= 2.0 gthread-2.0 >= 2.0) were not met: Requested 'glib-2.0 >= 2.21.3' but version of GLib is 2.16.6 Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. I have been writing web applications for quite sometime in PHP with MySQL. I always stored my database connection information into a configuration variable and connected to the database that way. A client wants a java applet for their website to communicate with their database. I'm very hesitant on this because the applet is going to be public and I am not sure how I would go about storing the database connection information. I'm paranoid that someone would decompile my application or find some way to extract my database connection information and use it maliciously. Any suggestions on how to do this securely?

How to calculate real-time stats?

I have a site with millions of users (well, actually it doesn't have any yet, but let's imagine), and I want to calculate some stats like "log-ins in the past hour". The problem is similar to the one described here: http://highscalability.com/blog/2008/4/19/how-to-build-a-real-time-analytics-system.html The simplest approach would be to do a select like this: select count(distinct user_id) from logs where date>='20120601 1200' and date <='20120601 1300' (of course other conditions could apply for the stats, like log-ins per country) Of course this would be really slow, mainly if it has millions (or even thousands) of rows, and I want to query this every time a page is displayed. How would you summarize the data? What should go to the (mem)cache? EDIT: I'm looking for a way to de-normalize the data, or to keep the cache up-to-date. For example I could increment an in-memory variable every time someone logs in, but that would help to know the total amount of logins, not the "logins in the last hour". Hope it's more clear now.

Grails deploy on Tomcat6

Hello, while trying to deploy a Grails application into tomcat6 I ran into some problems: I used the grails war command to build up a war, then copied it to var/lib/tomcat6/webapps and tried to restart the container. I had to change default Tomcat policy to skip security exceptions, since I couldn't access environment variable (like grails.env), then tried again but it gives me an exception related to instantiating something, but it's not clear where should I try to fix the error, according to tomcat6 logs the problem is: SEVERE: Exception sending context initialized event to listener instance of class org.codehaus.groovy.grails.web.context.GrailsC$ org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'pluginManager' defined in ServletContext$ at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:619) Caused by: org.codehaus.groovy.grails.exceptions.NewInstanceCreationException: Could not create a new instance of class [Hiberna$ ... 1 more Caused by: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org.hibernate.cfg.Environment It seems like it's unable to load org.hibernate.cfg.Environment class. I checked the applicationContext.xml and it refers to grails.xml to search for plugins, in this last file I actually have HibernateGrailsPlugin. Where should I look to find if the plugin is present?

Using NSURLRequest+NSURLConnection seems overkill for a webcall with no data return

All, This might seems very straightforward but I have already gone through the URL loading system program guide and the various NSURL.... classes and not found my answer. I am just trying to do a simple call from the app to a website to reserve a party spot: NSString *path=[NSString stringWithFormat:@"http://www.myparty123.com/ireservedURL.asp?Nickname=%@&Seat=%i&Email=%@&Currentparty=%i",john,5432,[email protected],6598]; NSURL* reservationURL =[NSURL URLWithString:path]; NSData *call= [NSData dataWithContentsOfURL:reservationURL]; This seemed to be the simple way but I get this warning that I am not using the "call" variable. And it seems overkill to do a call using NSData where there is no data return. Yet, creating an NSURLRequest and initiating an NSURLConnection and then implementing delegates with that request seems to be overkill as well. What am I missing. Thanks KMB
