• Windows 2008R2 two node failover cluster creation fails

  We have just installed two Windows 2008R2 Enterprise machines with identical hardware. When running the cluster validation everything is ok. When creating the cluster it fails with the following error: An error occurred while creating the cluster. An error occurred creating cluster 'CLUSTER04'. The parameter is incorrect The logfile on the first node where we are running our config from, does not show any errors. On the second node we get: The Cluster service is shutting down because quorum was lost. This could be due to the loss of network connectivity between some or all nodes in the cluster, or a failover of the witness disk. I've double checked and all communication between the servers are fine. Even when creating a one node cluster it gives the error. There are other failover clusters we have setup without any issues.

• Entity Framework - Single EMDX Mapping Multiple Database

  Because of my recent craze on Entity Framework thanks to Sir Humprey, I have continuously searched the Internet for tutorials on how to apply it to our current system. So I've come to learn that with EF, I can eliminate the numerous coding of methods/functions for CRUD operations, my overly used assigning of connection strings, Data Adapters or Data Readers as Entity Framework will map my desired database and will do its magic to create entities for each table I want (using EF Powertool) and does all the methods/functions for my Crud Operations. But as I begin applying it to a new project I was assigned to, I realized our current server is designed to contain each similar entities in different databases. For example Our lookup tables are stored in LookupDb, Accounting-related tables are in AccountingDb, Sales-related tables in SalesDb. My dilemma is I have to use an existing table from LookupDB and use it as a look-up for my new table. Then I have found Miss Rachel's Blog (here)Thank You Miss Rachel!  which enables me to let EF think that my TableLookup1 is in the AccountingDB using the following steps. Im on VS 2010, I am using C# , Using Entity Framework 5, SQL Server 2008 as our DB ServerStep 1:Creating A SQL Synonym. If you want a more detailed discussion on synonyms, this was what i have read -> (link here). To simply put it, A synonym enabled me to simplify my query for the Look-up table when I'm using the AccountingDB fromSELECT [columns] FROM LookupDB.dbo.TableLookup1toSELECT [columns] FROM TableLookup1Syntax: CREATE SYNONYM  TableLookup1(1) FOR LookupDB.dbo.TableLookup1 (2)1. What you want to call the table on your other DB2. DataBaseName.schema.TableNameStep 2: We will now follow Miss Rachel's steps. you can either visit the link on the original topic I posted earlier or just follow the step I made.1. I created a Visual Basic Solution that will contain the 4 projects needed to complete the merging2. First project will contain the edmx file pointing to the AccountingDB3. Second project will contain the edmx file pointing to the LookupDB4. Third Project will will be our repository of the merged edmx file. Create an edmx file pointing To AccountingDB as this the database that we created the Synonym on.Reminder: Aside from using the same name for the Entities, please make sure that you have the same Model Namespace for all your Entities  5. Fourth project that will contain the beautiful EDMX merger that Miss Rachel created that will free you from Hard coding of the merge/recoding the Edmx File of the third project everytime a change is done on either one of the first two projects' Edmx File.6. Run the solution, but make sure that on the solutions properties Single startup project is selected and the project containing the EDMX merger is selected.7. After running the solution, double click on the EDMX file of the 3rd project and set Lazy Loading Enabled = False. This will let you use the tables/entities that you see in that EDMX File.8. Feel free to do your CRUD Operations.I don't know if EF 5 already has a feature to support synonyms as I am still a newbie on that aspect but I have seen a linked where there are supposed suggestions on Entity Framework upgrades and one is the "Support for multiple databases"  So that's it! • Tell me what&rsquo;s wrong! &ndash; An XNA sample demonstrating exception handling and reporting in

  I’ve always enjoyed using Nick Gravelyn’s exception handling in all of my games. You’re always going to encounter those unhandled exception that your players are going to ferret out and having a method to display them rather than just crashing to the dashboard is definitely more of an elegant solution. But the other day I got to thinking…what if we could do more? What if instead of just displaying the error, we could encourage the players to send us the error. So I started playing with that an expanding upon Nick’s sample code to see what I could come up with. I got close to what I envisioned, but unfortunately there were some limitations to just what the XNA API could do. In my head I was picturing the players hitting “Send Message” and a 360 message would just be sent to the XBLIG developer. Unfortunately, you can only send messages in an XNA game to someone you’re currently in a network session with. Since I didn’t want to have a 360 server running all the time, virally connecting to players just to get error messages, I did the next best thing and just open up a 360 message and encourage them to manually enter the gamertag. Maybe someday we’ll be able to do that a little better, but this works for now. In the sample, players can hit the “A” button or key to generate in an exception. If the debugger is not attached, then the Exception message screen will be shown explaining what has happened and giving the player a chance to send a 360 message to the gamertag provided or maybe even just send an email. Nick’s code has been changed just a bit. It now accepts any PlayerIndex (no longer hard coded to just PlayerIndex.One) and it no longer uses a MessageBox to get the users selection. The code has also been modified so that it works both for the 360 and for the PC. Check out “Tell me what’s wrong!” and let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions. • Is it safe to use S3 over HTTP from EC2, as opposed to HTTPS

  I found that there is a fair deal of overhead when uploading a lot of small files to S3. Some of this overhead comes from SSL itself. How safe is it to talk to S3 without SSL when running in EC2? From the awesome comments below, here are some clarifications: this is NOT a question about HTTPS versus HTTP or the sensitivity of my data. I'm trying to get a feeling for the networking and protocol particularities of EC2 and S3. For example Are we guaranteed to be passing through only the AWS network when communicating from EC2 to S3 Can other AWS users (apart from staff) sniff my communications between EC2 and S3 Is authentication on their api done on every call, and thus credentials are passed on every call? Or is there some kind of authenticated session. I am using the jets3t lib. Feedback from people with some AWS experience would be appreciated. Thanks Marc

• Large Users Profile - Windows 7 - Machine running slowly

  I have the MD of a client of ours who has a Windows 7 Profile that is currently 14GB thanks to Videos/Music and Documents. The first thing we did was to switch from roaming to local. What I need to know is now the profile is local am I wasting my time by reducing it any further? Does it really make a difference to performance having a large local user profile? Only the 4GB outlook ost that talks to the network frequently. Thanks in advance.... Richard

• Consequences of changing a password in Windows

  I'm having 2 machines on my home network where I have the same account name but different passwords. I believe there should be advantages to having a single one (I hope :) but also think that changing it on one of the machines will do something - I'm just not sure what exactly. Will my stored passwords in IE and Chrome still work? Scheduled tasks? Etc. I'm looking for a list of things that I should watch out for after I change the user password.

• Can I set up OpenVPN on two or more machines so that they can each act as client and server?

In more detail: I have a Windows XP Pro PC at a work location that I want to be able to access my home Windows XP Pro PC and other home computers from. But I also want to be able to connect to the work PC from home. I think the term generally used is a "mesh" network. Can I do this with OpenVPN ? If so how would I do it? What are the most important things to remember to do? EDIT: The work Windows XP Pro PC is largely managed by IT Dept, I do have local admin rights to install things. Some settings are disabled. My main concern was firewalls and port forwarding on the work PC. Any suggestions?

• Google Rolls Out a New and Compact Navigation Bar

  Earlier this spring Google introduced the black navigation bar; now they’ve updated the bar to take up less space and be more useful. Although the black bar is useful in-so-far as it gives you quick access to Google services (useful, of course, only if you use those services) the new navigation bar–seen in the video above–includes an improved layout. Rather than use the bar space to spread out links which the user may or may not use the service links are now tucked into a mouse-over menu accessed by hovering on the Google logo. The majority of the space previously just taken up by links and the black bar itself is now a a search box. • Can I configure a DNS cache not to forward AAAA queries?

  I'm setting up an internal DNS cache because my firewall is having trouble handling all the sessions created by DNS requests. I tried using bind9, dnsmasq and DJB dnscache, they all help reduce the number of requests leaving my network, but there are still a lot of request being made. Looking at the log files, and tcpdump and dnstop outputs, it seems that requests that return SERVFAIL do not get cached at all. And a lot of those failed requests are AAAA requests, which is a shame, because I do not have ipv6 enabled on any server. I've looked at several ways to help the situation, and I think if I could somehow prevent AAAA record requests from being forwarded by the DNS cache, it would reduce the number of requests significantly. The closest thing I found was the filter-aaaa-on-v4 option in BIND9. However, this only removes the record from the server response, and does not prevent it from forwarding it. Any help would be appreciated.

• Filemaker 10 Advanced sending email via script & SMTP

  We are using a windows server box to run the databases but we have found via the headers that the emails are send from the local workstation. We have moved to a new email system and have set up a local linux server to securely send email out of our network to devices that do not support new protocols and encryption. But once we set up the script in filemaker 10 advanced (the local machine os x) we set it to the ip of our local box with no authentication but it does not send out an email. It creates a connection we see in the logs on the linux box but nothing more, additionally you can start a telnet connection with no issues. We have also made sure that there are no additional issue that we can see in our firewall policies. Any ideas where we should start? Does Filemaker 10 advanced log errors anywhere because I could not find any log files.

• Color Profiles in Windows 7 vs. XP

  I have a Brother Color Laser Printer and an HP 8150DN. I have a local Windows 7 Pro machine that I do graphics work on. I created a letterhead that when printed from my machine looks dark and rich on either the mono HP or the color Brother laser. I take this same letterhead, and move it onto our network for use by our users which are all on XP. Then they print the same file, it is washed out on either printer. I've confirmed that the printer settings we're using are identical. I've confirmed that its not related to the program or even specifically to the letterhead. I can duplicate this with other files too. I'm down to XP vs Windows 7 being the issue. I'm fairly certain now that color profiles are involved. I have no clue how to fix it though. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

• On a Mac, how are connections (possibly by spyware) made to outside internet addresses during initia

  I am trying to secure a Mac after discovering that network links are being established to some unwanted internet sites. Using 'lsof -i' (list open 'files', internet) I have seen that launchd, ntpd, firefox, dropbox and other processes are either 'LISTENING' or have 'ESTABLISHED' links to a site or sites which I suspect have to do with spyware. I have been trying to find startup files and preference lists that initiate thise links but can't find them. I could easily reinstall the OS and restore data from a backup but I'd prefer to know how to fix this as I have six Macs to look after. Thanks...

• Problems with RDC into Win2008 Server

  I'm having the same problem with a variety of new machines that I have built. When I RDC into the machine, the display does not update correctly. I get partial images, or refreshes only every 20-30 seconds. It is completely unusable. Eventually, it will even disconnect even though I am logged in. From RDCing into the machine, it looks like the machine is down, but it is fine. I can connect to it with an monitor and the problem is not visible. I think it is a problem with my network configuration. What should I look for to resolve this?

• CentOS listen to everything on the wire

  I know there's a native command on linux that will output (to stdout) every "event" related to a certain network interface (be it eth0 etc'). Like there's tail -f <file> to listen on file changes.. I just can't find it. I want to see all events, incoming packets, even dropped ones. At lowest level possible. In every protocol (TCP, UDP etc'). I think WireShark is a bit too big for this as I need something very simple just to see the events, it's for testing. What's the command?

• Problem Adding Windows 7 64-bit print drivers to 32-bit Windows 2003 Print Server

  I have installed the final RTM version of Windows 7 professional 64 bit on a test system before we begin the roll out in our company. I'm having problems connecting to several HP printers that we have on the network. These printers are being shared from a Windows 2003 server host. I have downloaded the lastest HP Universal Printer dirver, however I'm unable to add the 64 bit driver onto the 2003 server system (it's 32 bit). Does anyone have any advice on how I can get connected to these printers from the Windows 7 system?

• How to setup a simple self-hosted dynamic DNS server

  I have a small internal network of physical machines running hypervisors, which in turn run several KVM Ubuntu virtual machines. How would I setup an internal dynamic DNS server so that when I run a script to create a new virtual machine, that VM could automatically register itself in the DNS server? Bind seems to be the standard DNS server for Linux, but it seems designed for a much more "static" DNS model. Dynamically updating this would require a complicated script that would have to SSH into the DNS server, edit configuration files, and then restart the server. This doesn't seem like a very elegant solution. Are there better options? I saw a similar question, although they're asking for a solution for a public setting on Amazon. My servers are entirely private, and I don't want to rely on an external VM host or Dynamic DNS provider.

• HowTo access Samba Share over VPN Tunnel?

  I don't know how to access a Samba share running on a Ubuntu 10.04 server through OpenVPN 2.1.0. I've installed & configured OpenVPN and everything works. The server end of the tunnel has the IP of 10.8.0.1. When I connect from XP (over our local network) I'm given the IP of 10.8.0.6. I can ping and trace route from both ends of the tunnel. Now, I'm lost...how to access the Samba share from XP and from OS X?

• dead man's switch for remote networking interventions

  Hi, As I'm going to change the network configuration of a remote server, I was thinking of some security mechanisms to protect me from accidentally loosing control on the server. The level-0 protection I'm using is a scheduled system reboot: # at now+x minutes > reboot > ctrl+D where x is the delay before reboot. While this works relatevly well for very simple tasks like playing with iptables this method has at least two drawbacks: It's not very reactive, ie a connectivity problem should be detected automatically if for example an automatic remote ssh command fails does not work anymore for x seconds. It can obviously not work if one need to modify some configuration files and then reboot to test the changes. Are you guys using some tool for the second point ? I would love to have something able to revert the system configuration in a previously known stable state if I can't join the server X minutes after reboot. Thanks!

• Upgraded from VS 2008 -> VS 2010. Can't Connect to SQL Server in Staging Environment

  I have a test application written in C#/ASP.NET that I've developed using Visual Studio 2008 Professional/.NET 3.5 which connects to a local SQL Server 2008 Express instance. I upgraded the development machine to Visual Studio 2010 Professional maintaining .NET 3.5 and everything in the development environment continues to work correctly. Upon deployment of the new app to an internal staging machine, that app cannot connect to its local SQL Server 2008 Express database. I get the customary "server not found" error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible... Does something need to be upgraded on the staging machine to be able to host a Visual Studio 2010/.NET 3.5 application?

• Keyboard Navigation of File Open Dialog in Windows 7

  In Windows XP standard File - Open dialog, the top has a "Look In" box. I can press Alt+I to drop down a tree of the disks folders and easily navigate to other folders or network shares. In Windows 7, I can't seem to navigate the File - Open dialog as easily. The best I've been able to muster is to tab 5 times (in Excel 2007, but I assume it's a windows standard), then use arrow keys or use Alt+arrow keys like a browser to get around. It's simply not as good because I can't see the whole tree at once. Is there a way to see the whole folder tree? If not, do you have any other tips for keyboard navigation of the file open dialog in Windows 7?

• Under kvm, Vista guest OS install halts on black screen

  I am using kvm on my ubuntu-server-10.04 amd64 dual core PC. I am trying to install a Windows Vista guest OS. The installation proceeds properly until the system reboot halfway into the installation process, at which point it stops on a black screen and CPU usage goes to near zero. I created the vm with virt-install as follows: virt-install -n vista --connect qemu:///system -r 1024 -vcpus 2 \ --os-type windows --os-variant vista \ --virt-type kvm --accelerate \ -c /dev/sr0 \ --disk path=/dev/main/vista-hd \ --network bridge=br0 \ --vnc --noautoconsole Where /dev/sr0 is the physical drive with the vista installation DVD, and /dev/main/vista-hd is a 20-GB lvm logical volume I created. A number of people seem to have had success installing vista under KVM, but I haven't been able to determine what is causing my problem. Ideas anyone?
