    Can anyone recommend a language, library, framework or book which focuses on GUI programming from the perspective of a web developer? I have experience in web development, for example HTML/AJAX/PHP/MySQL among similar technologies. However, I have never programmed my own back-end, or any kind of standalone program. Does anyone have experience making this transition, and what would I best study to help make the leap from the browser to creating programs with GUIs (primarily for Windows)?

Magento ver. 1.6.2.0 I have all required extensions..curl mcrypt etc. Windows 7 with wampserver 2.2 mysql 5.5 php 5.3 apache 2.2.21 Whenever I try and install an extension from magento connect it starts saying: checking on dependencies..then apache restarts with... Parent: child process exited with status 255 -- Restarting. being the only thing in the log

    I need to compress a string so it is shorter for a GET method form. Is there any way to compress a string and it will be decrypted later? That way... ?error=LOTS OF STUFFLOTS OF STUFFLOTS OF STUFFLOTS OF STUFFLOTS OF STUFF is shorter in some sort of key ?error=somekey so I can get back the result later. Not using MySQL preferably.     assume that i start coding an application from scratch, is the best way to create tables when using Doctrine, to manually create tables in mysql and then generate models from the tables, or is it the other way around, that is to create the models in php and then generate tables from models? and if i already have a database, will the models created be optimal? cause i have heard some say that its best to create the database from scratch when using ORM, so that the relations are optimized for OOD. share your thoughts!

    I just started using CakePHP and it's very different from just normal procedural or basic OOP PHP. I am still learning PHP and still read "beginning PHP/mysql" books that teaches you basic PHP. Also lots of sites online provide code that isn't for a framework. Is the only way to make non-framework code to say a framework, say cakePHP, by learning cakePHP thoroughly than rewriting the code yourself to fit the MVC model?
