• DataReader - hardcode ordinals?

  When returning data from a DataReader I would typically use the ordinal reference on the DataReader to grab the relevant column: if (dr.HasRows) Console.WriteLine(dr[0].ToString()); (OR dr.GetString(0); OR (string)dr[0];)... I have always done this because I was advised at an early stage that using dr["ColumnName"] or a more elegant way of indexing causes a performance hit. However, whilst everything is becoming increasingly strongly-typed I feel more uncomfortable with this. I'm also aware that the above does not check for DBNull. How should data be returned from a DataReader?

  Hi Team, I am trying to learn SQL query optimization using SQL Server 2005. However, I did not find any practical example where I can improve performance by tweaking query alone. Can you please list some example queries - prior and after optimization? It has to be query tuning – not adding index, not making covering index, not making any alteration to table. No change is supposed to be done on table and index. [ I understand that indexes are important. • Benchmark for a .NET WinPcap wrapper

  I'm developing a .NET wrapper for WinPcap called Pcap.Net. I'm trying to make sure this wrapper has high performance and I want to compare it to WinPcap and to other .net wrappers for WinPcap. The features I want to profile are: WinPcap native features (sending packets in different ways, receiving packets in different ways...) Interpreting packets that Pcap.Net knows how to interpret (like Etherent, IPv4, UDP, TCP, ICMP, ...) Building packet that Pcap.Net knows how to build (the same types it knows how to interpret). I also want to be able to profile the benchmark using Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate profiling tools. My question is: What should my benchmark exactly do to cover these issues and how would you suggest to build it?

• PHP/MySQL database connection priority?

  Hello, I have a production database where usage statistics for a service we're working on. I use php to periodically roll up different resolutions (day, week, month, year) of interesting statistics in buckets dictated by the resolution. The php application I've written "completes" its data when its run, such that it will calculate all the rolled-up statistics for the resolutions and periods since it was last run. This is useful if we want to turn this off to debug database performance issues, because I can turn it back on and have it complete its data set. The problem I have, is the calculations are fairly intensive and drive the QPS of the production database server up. Is there a way to set a "priority" on a particular database connection so that it will only use "off-cycles" to do these calculations? Maybe a proper response would be to replicate the tables I'm working on into a different stats database, but, unfortunately I don't have the resources in place to attempt such a thing (yet). • Why doesn't WebBBS work now that I've migrated to a new server?

  Hello, I've moved a WebBBS board from one server to another. Ever since the board doesn't work. I'm getting an Apache error whenever I try to access the board. Don't even know where to start the debugging, I'm not a Perl person. The file paths remained the same and there isn't any DB involved. http://gammonline.com/members/board/ Any ideas? After a bit of testing I believe that the problem has something to do with the index.cgi which is located in that folder (not getting the error when renaming it). Thanks, Roy.

• CSS Attribute Content Selector multiple declarations

  I have this in my CSS: div#headwrap ul li a[href*="dev"] {background: #034769}; div#headwrap ul li a[href*="music"] {background: #A61300}; div#headwrap ul li a[href*="opinion"] {background: #b2d81e}; div#headwrap ul li a[href*="work"] {background: #ffc340}; So, my expected behavior is that where a link (a) within a list item (li) inside a unordered list (ul) inside a div with id "headwrap" has an href that contains "dev", the link will have a background color of #034769. If the link has an href that contains "music" it will have a background color of #A61300, and so on. However, what I am seeing is that the rule is only correctly applied to "dev". If I reorder the CSS declarations (putting music first, for instance), it only gets applied to "music". I'm testing in Firefox and Chrome, both are doing the same thing. Only the first one is applied. Anyone have any ideas why?

• Debugging problems in Visual Studio 2005 - No source code available for the current location

  Hi all I've searched up and down Google for others with a similar problem, and while I can find the error I don't think that other people have the same base problem that I do. Basically, I had to create a project for a unit-testing environment in order to run this test suite. First, I add my original C file, compile, and then a test file (C++) is generated. I then exclude my original source from the project, include this test script (which includes the original source at the top), and then run. I can debug the test file fine, but when it jumps to the original C file I get the dreaded 'no source code available for the current location' error. Both files are located within the same location, and I compiled the original file without any issue. Anybody have any thoughts about this? Its driving me crazy!

  In the simplified example, there are 2 Regular Expressions, one case sensitive, the other not.   Can someone pitch in their opinion about pros/cons between wrapping the DataContext in an using statement or not in LINQ-SQL in terms of factors as performance, memory usage, ease of coding, right thing to do etc. Update: In one particular application, I experienced that, without wrapping the DataContext in using block, the amount of memory usage kept on increasing as the live objects were not released for GC. As in, in below example, if I hold the reference to List of q object and access entities of q, I create an object graph that is not released for GC.   Hi, I am working on some scraping app, i wanted to try to get it to work but ran into a problem. I have replaced the original scraping destination in the below code with googles webpage, just for testing. It seems that my download doesnt get everything, i note that the body and the html tags are missing their close tags. How do i get it to download everything? Everything worked fine until I upgraded frome framework 3.5 to 3.5 sp1. the wcf web service stoped working and returns the error: "Failed to invoke the service. • Core Data iPad/iPhone BLOBS vs File system for 20k PDFs

  I'm designing an iPad/iPhone app using core data. The main focus of the app is sorting and viewing up to 20,000 PDFs They are ~200KB each. Typically its best to not store BLOBS in a DB, but for desktop systems I've typically seen it said that if the blobs are < 1 MB then its fine to use the DB. Any considerations I should take into count? If I store them in the file system can I store them all in one directory and not have performance issues (I won't need to ever get a directory list since I'd store each's path in the DB)? Should I divide them among a handful of directories? If so is there a good rule on # of files per dir?

  I have been trying to figure this one out, how do i test that a private method is called with rhino mocks with in the class that I am testing. So my class would be something like this. Public class Foo { public bool DoSomething() { if(somevalue) { //DoSomething; } else { ReportFailure("Failure"); } } private void ReportFailure(string message) { //DoSomeStuff; } } So my unit test is on class Foo and method DoSomething() I want to check and make sure that a certain message is passed to ReportFailure if somevalue is false, using rhino mocks.

• When would ShowDialog() return null?

  WPF's Window.ShowDialog method returns a nullable boolean. So does CommonDialog.ShowDialog. Now, I understand cases where these would return false (user clicked Cancel or pressed Esc), and when they would return true (code sets Window.DialogResult to true, probably in response to OK being clicked). But null? My first thought is that clicking the title bar's Close button might return null. But the docs state (and I confirmed by testing) that the title-bar Close button is treated as a Cancel. So when would Window.ShowDialog or CommonDialog.ShowDialog ever return null?

  I use Linux as primary OS. I need some suggestions regarding how should I set up my desktop and development. I do work on mostly .Net and Drupal, but some time on other lamp products and C/C++, Qt. I'm also interested in mobile (android..) and embedded development. Currently I install everything on my main OS, even I use it a little. I use VMs a little. Should I use separate VM for each kind of development (like one for .Net/Mono, another C++, one for mobile and one for db only, one for xyz things etc) Keep primary development environment on main os and moveothers in VM. main os should be messed up keep things easy to organize (must) performance should be optimal

  I'm a new user of dynatree plugin. When I read the documentation, I found the list of tree and node class member functions, such as tree.getRoot(), node.countChildren(). However, when I tried to use them, it complained that no such methods were found.   Hi, I have inherited a web project that is perl based and I'm attempting to set up a local testing server so changes can be made internally to the project. The server architecture Ubuntu 9.10 php 5.2.10 mysql 5.1.37 perl 5.10.0-24ubuntu4 All the dependent modules and packages are installed such as DateTime.pm, TemplateToolkit.pm but running the application throws the following error message: Can't locate object method "new" via package "Template" (perhaps you forgot to load "Template"?) at ../lib//KPS/TemplateToolkit.pm line 51 The code block that this refers to is: sub new { return Template->new( INCLUDE_PATH => $KPS::Config::templatepath, ABSOLUTE => 1, DEBUG => 1, ); } If anybody is able to shed any light on this or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.   I'm currently writing a program that needs to compare each file in an ArrayList of variable size. Right now, the way I'm doing this is through a nested code loop: if(tempList.size()>1){ for(int i=0;i<=tempList.size()-1;i++) //Nested loops. I should feel dirty? for(int j=i+1;j<=tempList.size()-1;j++){ //*Gets sorted. System.out.println(checkBytes(tempList.get(i), tempList.get(j))); } } I've read a few differing opinions on the necessity of nested loops, and I was wondering if anyone had a more efficient alternative. At a glance, each comparison is going to need to be done, either way, so the performance should be fairly steady, but I'm moderately convinced there's a cleaner way to do this. Any pointers?

• Best CPUs for speeding up compiling times of C++ w/ DistGCC

  I'm putting together a distributed build farm with DistGCC to speed up our teams compile times and just looking for thoughts on which processors to use in the hosts. Are we going to get a noticeable decrease in time using 8 cores vs. 4-hyperthreaded cores? Big difference in time between i7 and Xeon? etc, etc. Just need advice from people who've put together kick-a build clusters. We've got a majority of the normal things to speed up builds in place (pre-compiled headers, ccache, local gigabit connections between them, tons of ram, etc) so please just give advice on the best processor to use. And money is a factor, but anythings doable if the performance increase is noticeable. Thanks. Jay

• Legal uses of setjmp and GCC

  Using GCC (4.0 for me), is this legal: if(__builtin_expect(setjmp(buf) != 0, 1)) { // handle error } else { // do action } I found a discussion saying it caused a problem for GCC back in 2003, but I would imagine that they would have fixed it by now. The C standard says that it's illegal to use setjmp unless it's one of four conditions, the relevant one being this: one operand of a relational or equality operator with the other operand an integer constant expression, with the resulting expression being the entire controlling expression of a selection or iteration statement; But if this is a GCC extension, can I guarantee that it will work under for GCC, since it's already nonstandard functionality? I tested it and it seemed to work, though I don't know how much testing I'd have to do to actually break it. (I'm hiding the call to __builtin_expect behind a macro, which is defined as a no-op for non-GCC, so it would be perfectly legal for other compilers.)

• Custom broadcast events in AS3?

  In Actionscript 3, most events use the capture/target/bubble model, which is pretty popular nowadays: When an event occurs, it moves through the three phases of the event flow: the capture phase, which flows from the top of the display list hierarchy to the node just before the target node; the target phase, which comprises the target node; and the bubbling phase, which flows from the node subsequent to the target node back up the display list hierarchy. However, some events, such as the Sprite class's enterFrame event, do not capture OR bubble - you must subscribe directly to the target to detect the event. The documentation refers to these as "broadcast events." I assume this is for performance reasons, since these events will be triggered constantly for each sprite on stage and you don't want to have to deal with all that superfluous event propagation. I want to dispatch my own broadcast events. I know you can prevent an event from bubbling (Event.bubbles = false), but can you get rid of capture as well?

• How can I turn on DynamicCompression feature of IIS programmatically?

  I'm making an installer program for my web application. My web application uses CSS and JS heavily, so I want to enable both Static and Dynamic HttpCompression for IIS7/7.5. It needs 2 steps: I can modified the web.config, put <httpcompression> tag, it's ok. DynamicContentCompression must be turned on in Windows Feature to make httpCompression work. Static HttpCompression is enable by default in IIS7 and IIS7.5, but Dynamic HttpCompression is not enable by default (although it's available). I can do manually by turn on: Start/ControlPanel/ProgramsAndFeatures/TurnWindowsFeatures on or Off/IIS/WWW Service/Performance features/Dynamic Content Compression, but How can I programmatically turn it on that Windows Feature? I can use PowerShell, C# in my installer. Any idea how I might be able to do this? Thanks.
