• Web Development Internship Interview Help

  Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. • How do I get VirtualBox to work?

  I can't seem to make VirtualBox to work, I've installed it and reinstalled by 3 ways: Terminal, Ubuntu Software Center and VirtualBox's official web site installation and I keep getting the same kernel error. I found a "solution" to this problem by typing in terminal: sudo apt-get install virtualbox-dkms But it tells my that "virtualbox-dkms is already the newest version". Then I typed in terminal what the error tells me: sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup but then I tells me that DKMS is actually NOT installed (which is a contradiction). If anyone has encountered the same problem and actually solved it please tell me and explain me step by step 'cause I'm new to Linux.

Many designers said fluid width was better, but since user screens typically varied between 1024x768 and 1920x1080, fluid width allowed longer line length than is optimal for ease of reading, and so many sites (including Stack Exchange) use fixed width. Now that mobile devices are common, what is the the best approach to support both desktop and mobile browsers? Establish a separate mobile site (e.g: mobile.example.com) Serve a different CSS to mobile devices; if so how? Server-side browser sniffing, or a @media rule? • Set default app for opening an extension [closed]

  I am using Linux Mint 13 with Cinnamon. I have a problem setting an application to open a file with some extension when the application is actually only extracted, not really installed using apt-ger or .deb file. For example - Blender. You can download a .tar.gz from official site which you then extract and you can just run the app. However, it isn't listed in the default apps list (Right Clickon file - Open with other application - Show all installed apps). So now I have to always open the application first and open the file from there. How can I solve this?

  I recently started using Ubuntu as a LAMP server. I've come across plenty of tutorials that say to place the files at '/var/www/' and I've also seen others that put them in '/home/$USER/public_html/'. During my testing and figuring stuff out, I was successfully able to view a test site URL from each location. Is one better than the other? I thought that maybe it was just preference. But the more I think about it, the more I want to keep all my work in my Home folder.

• Ubuntu 13.04/13.10 - low graphics mode/black screen after login

  Since last week, my Ubuntu 13.04 installation started booting up in low graphics mode out of nowhere. I tried a number of solutions found on this site but to no avail. The other night, I decided to upgrade to 13.10 to see if the issue would be fixed in the process. Since then, the system starts fine, but when I login to my account, I'm just presented with a black screen. I switched to the terminal and did any necessary updates, but to no avail. I don't even know where to start debugging this issue, so I'd appreciate if someone could point me towards the first place to start looking?

  Google has indexed the IP address of my site rather than the domain, so now I'm trying to set up a 301 redirect that will redirect the IP address and all subsequent pages to the domain. I currently have something like this in my .htaccess file (however don't think it's working correctly?): RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^12.34.567.890 RewriteRule (.*) (domain address)/$1 [R=301,L] I've used various redirect checker tools and keep getting the message: "... not redirecting to any URL or the redirect is NOT SEARCH ENGINE FRIENDLY" Am I doing something wrong or is there something else I should be trying?   I have a betting type site where I publish a number (between 0-100) that is encrypted. Then after a period of time, I would review what the number is and prove it with a key to decrypt the encrypted number to prove that I'm not cheating. I also want it to be easily verifiable by an average user. What encryption algorithm/technique/package should I use? I'm no expert on cryptography. • Which social sign-in (Google, twitter, fb, etc) is most often used (if I could only choose one, which would statistically retain the most users)?

  I am working with a startup which is about to do it's launch in maybe 2-3 weeks. In order to see the primary features of the site, the user has to register or sign in if they have already registered. We quickly decided we wanted to incorporate social plugins as alternatives to a conventional sign up, just like stackexchange does. But seeing that we are strapped for time and fairly amateur developers, I'm trying to justify just choosing one or two social sign-ins to start with for the launch and then maybe add more later. Based on my experience as a user, I'm guessing that twitter and google (in no particular order of importance) would probably be the most important social sign-ins in order to retain as many users as possible, but have absolutely no statistics to back that up other than my own anecdotal experience. This question hasn't been visibly asked on the internet, so I figured I'd hop on stackexchange and give it a punt. Thanks.

  I have some usage queries for my web app's database, the results of which I want to display graphically. Is there an easy-to-use api that exists for this purpose? I want to show things like average query-time per user (a small user-base), average query time per day, and things like that. I think it would be cool to show these on a two-axis graph.   DETAILS I have a website that's content is in English. It is a niche website with a global market. However I would like users to be able to find the website using their own language. The scenario I envision is that the searcher is looking for the English content, but is searching in their own language. An example could be someone looking for "downloadable English crosswords." MY IDEAS Buy ccTLDs and have them permanently redirect to subdirectories on domain.com. The subdirectories would contain html sitemaps in the target language e.g.-Redirect domain.fr to domain.com/fr OR perhaps it would be better to maintain domain.fr as an independent site in the target language with the html sitemap linking to pages on domain.com ?   I've looked all over and can't find any reason as to why or how Nvidia names their drivers. for example they have a 330.xxx/340.xxx series that are current but also a 300.xxx and i've found that they aren't always release in order by number. Here's an example on there site with version and release date 331.38 - January 13 334.16 - Feb 7 331.49 - Feb 18 I'm really confused about what driver to actually go with, a few different series versions seem to work adequately and I just want to have an understanding of it and what the best option to work from would be. • 301 redirects - can we not delete old pages?

  First time here :) We have a page on the site which ranks well for an SEO term (top 5) but contains old information. We have added a new page but Google doesn't rank it that well. Information on these pages is time sensitive. Old: example.com/2013-related-information.html New: example.com/2014-related-information.html Obvious solution is to delete old page and do a 301 redirect to the new page. Now, can we still keep the old page by giving it a new URL. Step1: example.com/2013-related-information.html is redirect to example.com/2014-related-information.html Step2: example.com/2014-related-information.html is recreated with a new address such as example.com/new-2013-related-information.html What we are trying to do is to send the user to the fresh page but still not wasting the record copy if someone wants to go and dig up old page. Would appreciate help!! Cheers
