  I’ve posted a number of different Support process-related and tool-related blog entries over the past few years, and one common question I received back from various customers and partners is “How can I easily track AutoVue bugs & enhancements for status updates?” The capability to track bug status through the My Oracle Support (MOS) portal has existed in different forms for a while, although hasn’t necessarily been easy to find without going through specific segments of the extensive MOS training.   In order to configure the time zone with WebLogic Server, use the following JVM startup command: -Duser.timezone=<timezone> For example, in the java arguments in the admin console at Environments -> Servers -> Servername -> - Server Start tab, configure the startup settings that Node Manager will use to start the particular server. • Loose Coupling and UX Patterns for Applications Integrations

  I love that software architecture phrase loose coupling. There’s even a whole book about it. And, if you’re involved in enterprise methodology you’ll know just know important loose coupling is to the smart development of applications integrations too. Whether you are integrating offerings from the Oracle partner ecosystem with Fusion apps or applications coexistence scenarios, loose coupling enables the development of scalable, reliable, flexible solutions, with no second-guessing of technology. Another great book Enterprise Integration Patterns: Designing, Building, and Deploying Messaging Solutions tells us about loose coupling benefits of reducing the assumptions that integration parties (components, applications, services, programs, users) make about each other when they exchange information. Eliminating assumptions applies to UI development too. The days of assuming it’s enough to hard code a UI with linking libraries called code on a desktop PC for an office worker are over. The book predates PaaS development and SaaS deployments, and was written when web services and APIs were emerging. Yet it calls out how using middleware as an assumptions-dissolving technology “glue" is central to applications integration. Realizing integration design through a set of middleware messaging patterns (messaging in the sense of asynchronously communicating data) that enable developers to meet the typical business requirements of enterprises requiring integrated functionality is very Fusion-like. User experience developers can benefit from the loose coupling approach too. User expectations and work styles change all the time, and development is now about integrating SaaS through PaaS. Cloud computing offers a virtual pivot where a single source of truth (customer or employee data, for example) can be experienced through different UIs (desktop, simplified, or mobile), each optimized for the context of the user’s world of work and task completion. Smart enterprise applications developers, partners, and customers use design patterns for user experience integration benefits too. The Oracle Applications UX design patterns (and supporting guidelines) enable loose coupling of the optimized UI requirements from code. Developers can get on with the job of creating integrations through web services, APIs and SOA without having to figure out design problems about how UIs should work. Adding the already user proven UX design patterns (and supporting guidelines to your toolkit means ADF and other developers can easily offer much more than just functionality and be super productive too. Great looking application integration touchpoints can be built with our design patterns and guidelines too for a seamless applications UX. One of Oracle’s partners, Innowave Technologies used loose coupling architecture and our UX design patterns to create an integration for a customer that was scalable, cost effective, fast to develop and kept users productive while paving a roadmap for customers to keep pace with the latest UX designs over time. The main features are that it lets you create/manage schedule files for models and create/manage well trajectory files to use with schedule files. DpSolver. Used to estimate permeability cubes using pore cube and results of well testing. Additionally, the user visualizes maps of vapor deposition polymerization or permeability, which can be visualized layer by layer. The base opportunities of the application are that it enables calculation of reservoir vertical heterogeneity and vertical sweep efficiency; automatic history matching of sweep efficiency; and calculations using Quantile-Quantile transformation and vizualization of permeability cube and other reservoir data. Clearly, the two applications above are NetBeans Platform applications.

• Running Mixed Physical and Virtual Exalogic Elastic Cloud Software Versions in an Exalogic Rack is now Supported

  Although it was not supported on older versions, now as of EECS 2.0.6, an Exalogic rack can be configured in a mixed-mode: half virtual and half physical Linux: Flexibility to have physical and virtual environments on same rack. For example, production on physical and test/dev on virtual. Exalogic Control manages the virtual compute nodes on the rack. Physical compute nodes are managed manually (including PKeys). Option to change full physical to hybrid and hybrid to full virtual rack. User has an option to choose either the top or bottom nodes for physical or virtual deployment. For further information about how the compute nodes can be split up on the rack (into bottom or top half) to run either Oracle Virtual Server (OVS "hypervisor") or Oracle Linux, please take a look at MOS Note 1536945.1. Note: Solaris is not yet supported in the mixed configuration.

• Java @Contented annotation to help reduce false sharing

  See this posting by Aleksey Shipilev for details -- @Contended is something we've wanted for a long time. The JVM provides automatic layout and placement of fields. Usually it'll (a) sort fields by descending size to improve footprint, and (b) pack reference fields so the garbage collector can process a contiguous run of reference fields when tracing. @Contended gives the program a way to provide more explicit guidance with respect to concurrency and false sharing. Using this facility we can sequester hot frequently written shared fields away from other mostly read-only or cold fields. The simple rule is that read-sharing is cheap, and write-sharing is very expensive. We can also pack fields together that tend to be written together by the same thread at about the same time. More generally, we're trying to influence relative field placement to minimize coherency misses. Fields that are accessed closely together in time should be placed proximally in space to promote cache locality. That is, temporal locality should condition spatial locality. Fields accessed together in time should be nearby in space. That having been said, we have to be careful to avoid false sharing and excessive invalidation from coherence traffic. As such, we try to cluster or otherwise sequester fields that tend to written at approximately the same time by the same thread onto the same cache line. Note that there's a tension at play: if we try too hard to minimize single-threaded capacity misses then we can end up with excessive coherency misses running in a parallel environment. Theres no single optimal layout for both single-thread and multithreaded environments. And the ideal layout problem itself is NP-hard. Ideally, a JVM would employ hardware monitoring facilities to detect sharing behavior and change the layout on the fly. That's a bit difficult as we don't yet have the right plumbing to provide efficient and expedient information to the JVM. Hint: we need to disintermediate the OS and hypervisor. Another challenge is that raw field offsets are used in the unsafe facility, so we'd need to address that issue, possibly with an extra level of indirection. Finally, I'd like to be able to pack final fields together as well, as those are known to be read-only.

  In an effort to improve the user experience changes have been made to Service Request (SR) creation process using My Oracle Support (MOS). This change is now online for several high-use CRM products. We aimed to streamline the process by reducing the number of questions, making subsequent questions conditional on previous responses, reducing lists of problem categories, and recommending key documents/evidence which should be supplied to help the Support engineer progress the issue.
