• Debugging feature activation in SharePoint 2007

  I have a SharePoint feature that is activated under 'Site Collection Features' that is having some issues being activated. I've activated it through the stsadm as well as the SharePoint UI, both unsuccessful. The feature toggles from deactivated to activated, but the result that should be there is not. The result is some pages that should be created. So my question is does anyone know of a way to step through the activation of features process? I'd like to be able to attach Visual Studio 2008 to the browser and step through a few breakpoints that I've set.   Hi Guys, i'm developing a 32bit Client-Application with Delphi. From this application I need to connect to databases on two different servers. First databse character set ist WE8MSWIN1252, the other server decodes with WE8PC850. Setting the client NLS_LANG parameter to the correct value solves correct sql-query results. Unfortunately this (the client character-set) seems only to be recognized on applications startup (first connect to oracle). I need to change the client-characterset at runtime. Oracle client seems to store the character set an application used to connect! beside: I#m using udl-files to setup the connections (Microsoft OLE DB - driver) what can I do?

• Which collection interface should I use in .NET for COM-interop?

I'm designing an interface in .NET that would be consumed from COM applications (mainly VB6, but Visual C++ 6 is also a possibility) and I would like to use Collection types as argument and return types for the methods in the interface. Questions: What happens to the VB6 built-in collection types (arrays, collections, dictionaries) when they go through interop? My current guess is that: arrays - System.Array collections - Microsoft.VisualBasic.Collection dictionaries - System.Collections.Hashtable Is that correct? Which interfaces should I use as return types? IEnumerable, ICollection, IList, IDictionary? Would I be able to do a For Each in VB6 to iterate over these interfaces? Should I use the generic or non-generic variants of the interfaces?

  One of the things I like about Microsoft's RDC Client is that the resolution of the experience is set by the client and not, say, a physical monitor connected to the host, as is the case with VNC; the latter being the protocol used by Mac. This means that even though I'm connecting to a notebook with a 1280x800 physical resolution, via RDC I can run it at 2560x1600 on my 30" monitor. However, that only seems to work for RDC. Does anyone know of something I can run on the Mac that will allow me to remotely control it at a different resolution than what is physically set? TIA, Mark

• Black background while copying image from Firefox

  An image is copied from Firefox into the Clipboard. My program gets it from clipboard and saves as a JPEG image. For some reason the image is saved with a black background. If I open the same URL in IE and copy the image into the Clipboard, the image is saved correctly by my program. I am using Delphi 7. I also tried to copy the image from Firefox into Microsoft Paint and again the black background. Does anyone has a tip in how to handle such problem.

  I'm a complete newbie to Windows and COM programming, trying to use com4j in order to call a COM object from Java. Com4j generates Java interfaces from COM definitions "often found in .ocx, .dll, .exe, and/or .tlb files" . It was easy for me to locate the .ocx file of my target COM object, but I have no clue regarding the standard interface iStream. Microsoft's documentation mentions OLE32.DLL ( c:\Windows\Windows32\Ole32.dll ?) , but neither the com4j generator nor oleviewer succeed in opening this file. Any hints?

  [Environment] Server Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 Client Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0 Microsoft Office 2003 Hello~ Today I received a call from one of my client and she said that she received an alert, "Ambiguous name detected: tempDDE" when attemping to open a doc from library. So I googled some and found solutions from MS and others and modified from Normal.dot to Normal1.dot. But after that, when I opened it again from library another problem happend and it is the doc contents is not loaded. When I click the link of doc, then the WIN?WORD.exe pops up but the contents of the document is not showing up (Silent). I tried some Open the doc file using Word Open Menu (Library Link) = Worked Get the url of the file and open it uing using Word Open Menu = Worked Add the url to Trusted Site = Done but not helped Any advices are welcomed. • Entity Framework 4.3.1 Code based Migrations and Connector/Net 6.6

   Code-based migrations is a new feature as part of the Connector/Net support for Entity Framework 4.3.1. In this tutorial we'll see how we can use it so we can keep track of the changes done to our database creating a new application using the code first approach. If you don't have a clear idea about how code first works we highly recommend you to check this subject before going further with this tutorial. Creating our Model and Database with Code First  From VS 2010  1. Create a new console application 2.  Add the latest Entity Framework official package using Package Manager Console (Tools Menu, then Library Package Manager -> Package Manager Console). In the Package Manager Console we have to type  Install-Package EntityFramework This will add the latest version of this library.  We will also need to make some changes to your config file. A <configSections> was added which contains the version you have from EntityFramework.  An <entityFramework> section was also added where you can set up some initialization. This section is optional and by default is generated to use SQL Express. Since we don't need it for now (we'll see more about it below) let's leave this section empty as shown below. 3. Create a new Model with a simple entity. 4. Enable Migrations to generate the our Configuration class. In the Package Manager Console we have to type  Enable-Migrations; This will make some changes in our application. It will create a new folder called Migrations where all the migrations representing the changes we do to our model.  It will also create a Configuration class that we'll be using to initialize our SQL Generator and some other values like if we want to enable Automatic Migrations.  You can see that it already has the name of our DbContext. You can also create you Configuration class manually. 5. Specify our Model Provider. We need to specify in our Class Configuration that we'll be using MySQLClient since this is not part of the generated code. At this point we can create our database and then start working with Migrations. So let's do some data access so our database get's created. You can run your application and you'll get your database Personal as specified in our config file. Add our first migration Migrations are a great resource as we can have a record for all the changes done and will generate the MySQL statements required to apply these changes to the database. Let's add a new property to our Person class public string Email { get; set; } If you try to run your application it will throw an exception saying  The model backing the 'PersonelContext' context has changed since the database was created. Consider using Code First Migrations to update the database (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=238269). So as suggested let's add our first migration for this change. In the Package Manager Console let's type Add-Migration AddEmailColumn Now we have the corresponding class which generate the necessary operations to update our database. namespace MigrationsFromScratch.Migrations { using System.Data.Entity.Migrations; public partial class AddEmailColumn : DbMigration { public override void Up(){ AddColumn("People", "Email", c => c.String(unicode: false)); } public override void Down() { DropColumn("People", "Email"); } } } In the Package Manager Console let's type Update-Database Now you can check your database to see all changes were succesfully applied. You can see there is the up method which can update your database and the down that can revert the changes done. If you customize any code you should make sure to customize in both methods. Now let's apply this change. Update-database -verbose I added the verbose flag so you can see all the SQL generated statements to be run. Downgrading changes So far we have always upgraded to the latest migration, but there may be times when you want downgrade to a specific migration. Let's say we want to return to the status we have before our last migration. We can use the -TargetMigration option to specify the migration we'd like to return. Also you can use the -verbose flag. If you like to go  back to the Initial state you can do: Update-Database -TargetMigration:$InitialDatabase  or equivalent: Update-Database -TargetMigration:0  Migrations doesn't allow by default a migration that would ocurr in a data loss. One case when you can got this message is for example in a DropColumn operation. You can override this configuration by setting AutomaticMigrationDataLossAllowed to true in the configuration class. Also you can set your Database Initializer in case you want that these Migrations can be applied automatically and you don't have to go all the way through creating a migration and updating later the changes. Let's see how. Database Initialization by Code We can specify an initialization strategy by using Database.SetInitializer (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg679461(v=vs.103)). One of the strategies that I found very useful when you are at a development stage (I mean not for production) is the MigrateDatabaseToLatestVersion. This strategy will make all the necessary migrations each time there is a change in our model that needs a database replication, this also implies that we have to enable AutomaticMigrationsEnabled flag in our Configuration class. public Configuration()         {             AutomaticMigrationsEnabled = true;             AutomaticMigrationDataLossAllowed = true;             SetSqlGenerator("MySql.Data.MySqlClient", new MySql.Data.Entity.MySqlMigrationSqlGenerator());    // This will add our MySQLClient as SQL Generator          } In the new EntityFramework section of your Config file we can set this at a context level basis.  The syntax is as follows: <contexts> <context type="Custom DbContext name, Assembly name"> <databaseInitializer type="System.Data.Entity.MigrateDatabaseToLatestVersion`2[[ Custom DbContext name, Assembly name],  [Configuration class name, Assembly name]],  EntityFramework" /> </context> </contexts> In our example this would be: The syntax is kind of odd but very convenient. This way all changes will always be applied when we do any data access in our application. There are a lot of new things to explore in EF 4.3.1 and Migrations so we'll continue writing some more posts about it.   I'm looking to accept digits and the decimal point, but no sign. I've looked at samples using the NumericUpDown control for WinForms, and this sample of a NumericUpDown custom control from Microsoft. But so far it seems like NumericUpDown (supported by WPF or not) is not going to provide the functionality that I want. The way my app is designed, nobody in their right mind is going to want to mess with the arrows. They don't make any practical sense, in the context of my app. So I'm looking for a simple way to make a standard WPF TextBox accept only the characters that I want. Is this possible?   I'm starting to read in-depth on the .NET framework, and its Common Language Runtime. I'm reading a .NET overview by Microsoft and I'm not sure what is meant by this statement. Code that targets the runtime is known as managed code, while code that does not target the runtime is known as unmanaged code. How do you target the Common Language Runtime? I know its defaulted when developing in Visual Studio, but how would you specifically target the CLR? What code when developing a .NET application wouldn't target the CLR, and thereby be called unmanaged code?

  Hi, The question is about Armenian. I'm using sql server 2005, collation SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, data mostly is in Armenian and we can't use unicode. I tested on ms sql 2008 with a windows collation for armenian language ( Cyrillic_General_100_ ), I have found here, ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188046.aspx ) but it didn't help. I have a function, that orders hex values and a lower function, which takes each char in each string and converts it to it's lower form, but it's not acceptable solution, it works really slow, calling that functions on every column of a huge table. Is there any solution for this issue not using unicode and not working with hex values manually?

• Secondary Domain Adds Extra Folder in URL during Postbacks

  My ASP.NET Website (C#, 3.5 framework, IIS7) is hosted at GoDaddy. There are multiple sites on the account. Currently when I perform postbacks or Response.Redirects on a secondary web site, the following URL appears in the address bar: www.mywebsite.com/webfolder/default.aspx Where the "webfolder" is the sub-directory on the server where the web site is hosted (i.e. SeverRoot/webfolder). The site seems to work with or without the folder in the URL. Is there a way to remove the folder from the URLs during postback? I think I have to use URL Rewriting (which GoDaddy supports using Microsoft's Rewrite Module) but I'm not sure how.

  I am writing an application in C# that makes use of a 3rd party COM DLL, this dll creates a lot of resources (like bitmaps, video, data structures) in unmanaged memory. While digging around I came across the following call for the Garbage Collector: GC.AddMemoryPressure(long long bytesAllocated) It is documented in MSDN here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.gc.addmemorypressure.aspx This sounds like something I should be calling since this external dll is createing a lot of resources the CLR is unaware of. I guess I have two questions... How do I know how much memory pressure to add when the dll is 3rd party and it's not possible for me to know exactly how much memory this dll is allocating. How important is it to do this?

• Problem with SqlServer 2005 when opening connections

  I have a Winforms application and I use EntLib to connect to a SQL Server 2005 DB. The application is working ok, but sometimes, and lately more often, we have started receiving this error from the db when opening the connection: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233) The problem is intermittent. The user works well for a couple of hours and then suddenly the exception is thrown. Sometimes it happens when we run a small process that loads a file and then inserts the data to the db.

• ClickOnce Deployment online questions

  Hi all, Bit of a strange question, but how do ClickOnce deployments work from a web site? I seem to be having some problems with this. Basically, the setup file will download when you click the "install" button, but then some files are missing. Do you need to be on a Microsoft server to run ClickOnce deployments? I usually do deployments over a local server with UNC, and as this is the first time I've done one online I'm struggling a bit. Any newbie tutorials you can point me to would be great, and if I do need a special host for it, could you please recommend some? Cheers!

• Outlook 2003 Add-In Setup Project with COM DLL Deployment Problem

  Hi, I developed an Outlook 2003 add-in which uses the com dll redemption. I created a visual studio 2008 setup project, added a custom action to run "caspol.exe -machine -addgroup 1 -strong -hex [key] -noname -noversion FullTrust -n \"Name\" -description \"desc\" and moved the registry keys under software to HKLM as described in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc136646.aspx#AutoDeployVSTOse_InstallingtheAddinforAllUsers to ensure all-users compatibility. I included the redemption.dll in the setup with vsdrfCOMSelfReg (vsdrfCOM throwed an error). My problem is: When installing the setup on a test machine under an admin account, it runs fine under all users, however when we use the company wide software deployment which runs under a system account the setup executes but the add-in wont load. If I repair the installation with an admin account again it loads just fine. Shouldn't a system account have the required permissions to install all of the components? What options do I have? Thanks for any suggestions.

• Makecert problem under Windows 7

  I'm creating a certificate to use with an SslStream, and I've been doing it this way under XP: makecert -r -pe -n "CN=aName" -ss my -sr localmachine -sky exchange -sp "Microsoft RSA SChannel Cryptographic Provider" -sy 12 server.cer If I understand this correctly, this creates a certificate in server.cer, and creates a private key for it in my personal certificate store. Once I have done this, I can create a certificate object like this: X509Certificate.CreateFromCertFile(certFile); I then use it with the SSLStream, and everything works fine. Now that I have switched to Windows 7, the private key seems to be disappearing every time I restart the machine. I run a command prompt as Administrator, and execute the same makecert command shown above. This succeeds and the SSL connection works correctly. If I restart the machine, the call to AuthenticateAsServer fails with the exception "The server mode SSL must use a certificate with the associated private key." Why is the private key disappearing? What do I need to do to make it stick around?

I have experience developing web apps in Ruby on Rails (& a little with Java with JSP pages & struts mvc). Should I jump straight to MVC framework? (as opposed to going ASP.net) That is from the point of view of future direction for Microsoft & as well ease in ramping up from myself. Or if you like, given my experience to date, what would the pros/cons for me re MVC versus ASP.net? thanks

• an HTML file is NOT an Excel file, right?

  we use an application that has an "export to excel" feature that doesn't work on PC's that done have outlook express installed. i know, you're thinking "WTF does outlook express have to do with excel files?" i asked the same thing, and here's what i found: the file being generated is actually one of those Microsoft Single File Web Pages (.mht) and NOT an excel file you need to have outlook express installed to actually view a .mht file. i've explained to their support people that just because you can slap a .xls on a file and excel will open it does not mean its an excel file, and does not mean that this is the right way to do it. how would you explain that this is not proper?

  hi, I have methods which return interface and some methods which accepts interface as parameters. I am trying to use Net DataContractSerializer but I am getting following error... The formatter threw an exception while trying to deserialize the message: There was an error while trying to deserialize parameter http://tempuri.org/:id. The InnerException message was 'Error in line 1 position 120. XML 'Element' 'http://tempuri.org/:id' does not contain expected attribute 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/2003/10/Serialization/:Type'. The deserializer has no knowledge of which type to deserialize. Check that the type being serialized has the same contract as the type being deserialized.'. Please see InnerException for more details. Please help me how to resolve this error.... If I use Netdatacontract attribute on Operation Contract, can i use DataContract and Datamember attribute on serializable class??? Thanks in advance...

• Problems with VBScript - RegRead when running as a service

  I am working on a script that runs under a custom installation utility, which is running as a service. To get the current user name the script executes this command: str_Acct_Name_Val = "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Logon User Name" str_Acct_Name = RegRead(str_Acct_Name_Val) When I run the script from the command prompt, it can read that value just fine (under an administrator account). When the value is attempted to be read with service/local system privileges, the read fails. What is the problem here? EDIT: Some additional information. When running as a service calling the current user name returns "SYSTEM" and my guess is that HKCU doesn't "exist" under the view of the SYSTEM, since there is technically no current user. There is a user logged in at the time, but not in the scope of the running script. Maybe there is somewhere in HKLM I could find the currently logged on user?
