I'd like to change the keyboard mapping from command-line (Terminal) in Mac OS X Lion (10.7).
I can manually set it (System Preferences - Language & Text - Input Sources), and there's a nice option that lets me use different input sources for different documents, but I'd like to bind it to a key under zsh to easily swap between Qwerty and Dvorak layouts (I'm learning Dvorak, and having the option to switch easily would be sensational).
I've posted the following question to SO, but thought there might be a server based solution.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9053964/php-script-with-sleep-does-not-exit-on-connection-close
I'm running an Ubuntu VPS to run this script, and I'm trying to get the script to die when the user closes the window/tab of his browser.
There are several PHP based functions to see if the connection is still open, but none works (trust me, tested them all).
Any creative ideas on how I can do this through the server maybe?

Is there a way to set the default location of the windows explorer window when you open it?

I can not access Contol panel in my windows vista machine.

Is there some program or some registry entry thats restricting it? is ther a way to control this behaviour?
I tried this answer, but it broke my Gnome Terminal, with this error message:
There was a problem with the command for this terminal
Text was empty (or contained only whitespace)
I tried reinstalling it and uninstalling/reinstalling it to no avail. Anyone have any ideas how I can fix this? I really need my terminal ;-)
In Ubuntu some applications can be set to minimize instead of exit on close. For example, Empathy minimizes to the system tray (mail icon) when the close button is pressed in the application window. How do I make Evolution do this as well?
Essentially I would like to have Evolution hidden in the system tray instead of having to re-launch it every ten minutes to check for new messages (or leave it open and clutter the taskbar).
Can anyone tell me how to access the Java Applet Console in Chromium for Linux?
I assumed there would be a Java application packaged with the JRE that would give me access through the command line, but I can't find reference to anything.
$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_24"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11.2) (ArchLinux-6.b24_1.11.2-1-i686)
OpenJDK Client VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode)
I want to close an open port which is in listening mode between my client and server application.
Is there any manual command line option in Linux to close a port ??
NOTE: I came to know that "only the application which owns the connected socket should close it, which will happen when the application terminates."
I dont understand why it is only possible by the application which opens it ... But still eager to know if there is any another way to do it ??
Hi,
Im relatively new to Ubuntu, Im wondering how easy it is to write what I think is called a shell script to make tasks a little easier.
For example I frequently connect to a server - ssh -p 123 [email protected]
Can and how could I shorten this to a shorter command like "mysite" or "connect mysite"
Thanks.
I have a PC running Opensuse 11.0 Linux. I currently login using ssh with putty. However this is a command line login. How to do a remote xserver login from windows to run a gnome or kde session. what software should I use?
I have the root password for the Linux PC and admin privileges on vista.
I am trying to scp files from a windows server to a linux server with the original time and dates intact. When running the command:
pscp.exe -p C:\temp\somefile.txt user@server:/temp/
The file on the server always has the date/time of the transfer, not the original file. Putty SCP seems to be completely ignoring the preserve attributes flag. Anyone experienced this before and/or have a solution?

Just learned about the screen command on linux - it is genius. I love it. However, the actual terminal/prompt in screen looks and behaves differently than my standard bash prompt. That is, the colors aren't the same, tab completion doesn't seem to work, etc.
Is there a way I can tell screen to behave just like a normal (at least, normal as in what I am used to) bash prompt ?
I can't play ANY video or listen ANY mp3. I got the Windows 7, and I was watching vids on youtube until yesterday, but today, NONE of my players in general works (youtube, WMP, Real Player, etc...)! Also, it doesn't help if I use another browser.... HELP! What happens is, I press 'play' on the video and then the window freezes and I just can press the 'x' to close it. Help, thanks A LOT!
The tmux attach command acts more like a combination of screen -r and screen -x -- first it trys to attach to the most recently detached session, and then if none is available it will attach to a currently attached session. I want to emulate the behavior of screen -R: first try to attach to a detached session, then start a new session if there were no detached sessions. What is the best way to achieve this in tmux?
On windows and ubuntu I just download the latest drops of emacs straight from the gun/fsf site, but they don't have Mac binaries there.
I have a decent version that came with Snow Leopard, but just running in the bash terminal. Is there a version that runs in a standalone window and is more Mac friendly?
I did try using ports, and downloaded one called emacs cocoa, but it didn't compile.
I've been told by my ISP I'm using too much bandwidth so after using Activity Monitor to see that I'm using ~2GB a day I've used the nettop command line utility to work out where. Turns out it's iTunes.
I don't use it for downloading/streaming music (other than podcasts of which I definitely don't have 2GB of new ones a day) or movies. What is iTunes doing?
This is on a late 2009 MacBook running Lion 10.7.5 with iTunes version 10.7
My monitor is 1920 x 1200 and the computer is running Windows 7.
Using VirtualBox and Ubuntu 10.04, the screen of the Ubuntu can only be 800 x 600 or 640 x 480. Is there a way to change that.
I resized the VirtualBox window and Ubuntu still thinks the max is 800 x 600.
I want to run a guest operating system under a Linux host with VirtualBox, but I don't want to run from within X. I don't want a headless configuration, I don't want to run VirtualBox in the background, I don't want any remote protocols. I just want the guest OS to take control of my console (keyboard, mouse and monitor) and render to the framebuffer directly, not from within an X window.
Is this possible?
I use emacs org-mode to manage work items. Every week, I manually remove all Done items older than 2 weeks. Is there an easy way to perform this automatically?
EDIT:
I am currently trying to add a new custom command like this:
(setq org-agenda-custom-commands
'(("P" "Show old entries" todo "DONE"
(
(org-agenda-files '("c:/git/org/tickets.org"))
(tags "CLOSED<=\"-2w\"")
)
))
)
The filter on the CLOSED timestamp is not working correctly.
I would like to know if there is a (cost free) way to backup Windows Server 2008 Active Directory and DNS settings without using Windows Server Backup.
The problem stems from not having a seperate volume available to store the resulting backup from Windows Server Backup.
I examined the command line options with wbadmin and it also expects the destination to be a dedicated volume for the backup.
