• iPad and User Assistance

  What possibilities does the iPad over for user assistance in the enterprise space? We will research the possibilities but I can see a number of possibilities already for remote workers who need access to trouble-shooting information on-site, implementers who need reference information and diagrams, business analysts or technical users accessing reports and dashboards for metrics or issues, functional users who need org charts and other data visualizations, and so on. It could also open up more possibilities for collaborative problem solving. User assistance content can take advantage of the device's superb display, graphics capability, connectivity, and long battery life. The possibility of opening up more innovative user assistance solutions (such as comics) is an exciting one for everyone in the UX space. Aligned to this possibility we need to research how users would use the device as they work.

  Yesterday my friend Vinod Kumar wrote excellent blog post on SQL Server 2012: Using SEQUENCE. I personally enjoyed reading the content on this subject. While I was reading the blog post, I thought of very simple new puzzle. Let us see if we can try to solve it and learn a bit more about Sequence. Here is the script, which I executed. USE TempDB GO -- Create sequence CREATE SEQUENCE dbo.SequenceID AS BIGINT START WITH 3 INCREMENT BY 1 MINVALUE 1 MAXVALUE 5 CYCLE NO CACHE; GO -- Following will return 3 SELECT next value FOR dbo.SequenceID; -- Following will return 4 SELECT next value FOR dbo.SequenceID; -- Following will return 5 SELECT next value FOR dbo.SequenceID; -- Following will return which number SELECT next value FOR dbo.SequenceID; -- Clean up DROP SEQUENCE dbo.SequenceID; GO Above script gave me following resultset. 3 is the starting value and 5 is the maximum value. Once Sequence reaches to maximum value what happens? and WHY? Bonus question: If you use UNION between 2 SELECT statement which uses UNION, it also throws an error. What is the reason behind it? Can you attempt to answer this question without running this code in SQL Server 2012. I am very confident that irrespective of SQL Server version you are running you will have great learning. Since its inception the programme has developed and improved and every year more graduates are taken on board. • Where to find clients?

  Of course, I don't expect anybody give away their 'gold mine' or whatever but I am struggling to see where I should be advertising my services. I have one other developer I work with and we have a lot of happy clients - on freelance websites. Thing is, freelance websites just seem to suck the life out of you when you're being out-bidded by ridiculous rates. I want to attract customers who are more concerned about quality and accountability than price. Any suggestions at all? I'm so lost with this.

• TechEd 2012: Office, SharePoint And More Office

  I haven’t spent any time looking at Office 365 up to this point.  I met Donovan Follette on the flight down from Chicago.  I also got to spend some time discussing the product offerings with him at the TechExpo and that sealed my decision to attend this session. The main actor of his presentation is the BCS – Business Connectivity Services. He explained that while this feature has existed in on-site SharePoint it is a valuable new addition to Office 365 SharePoint Online.  If you aren’t familiar with the BCS, it allows you to leverage non-SharePoint enterprise data source from SharePoint.  The greatest benefactor is the end users who can leverage the data using a variety of Office products and more.  The one thing I haven’t shaken my skepticism of is the use of SharePoint Designer which Donovan used to create a WCF service.  It is mostly my tendency to try to create solutions that can be managed through the whole application life cycle.  It the past migrating through test environments has been near impossible with anything other than content created by SharePiont Designer. There is a lot of end user power here.  The biggest consideration I think you need to examine when reaching from you enterprise LOB data stores out to an online service and back is that you are going to take a performance hit.  This means that you have to be very aware of how you configure these integrated self serve solutions.  As a rule make sure you are using the right tool for the right situation. • Ubuntu eats itself after I followed updater instruction

  Updater (I assume) put a no entry style alert icon on the panel which informed me that certain package dependencies were not up to snuff. Upgrades were thereafter only partial. The dialogue advised that I (and this is from noob memory) sudo apt-get install -f. I did this and typed in the confirmation phrase and watched apt-get systematically remove every component of linux, both the stuff I installed and the core ubuntu packages. I could only assume at this stage that this was for a fresh install but of course, I know better now. There's much complaint about Windows, but I've never met with advice from Microsoft tools to wipe out the operating system because of a couple of missing .dlls. So what gives? This was a 64 bit install of 12.04. All that is left is grub pointing to a couple of windows recovery partitions on the hard drive. I'm tempted, but I have hopes of recovering the data that I had enough misguided faith to trust to the linux ext4 partition. I've tried pen driving back into it with a 32 bit iso but I'm simply informed that ubuntu is running in low graphics mode and get to watch the dots cycle indefinitely. EDIT: Thanks for the advice vis positive request. I've got onto the machine with a 64 bit stick and can see the file structure left behind by the installation. My first instinct was to run install from the stick but it did not seem to offer a recovery option. My question then: is there a way to recover the current installation so that if I reinstall the packages I had they will pick up the original settings. I'm particularly worried about losing email from evolution - the rest I could probably lash back together. I would also be interested how this disaster came about. I see people in the know recommending this same procedure in similar circumstances. Thanks for your attention, Tony Martin

• Internationalization of non-english application

  I know there are lots of posts for internationalization, but this is something I didn't found while searching. I have a PHP Web application, which is pretty big right now. It's developed actively for 4 years and wasn't built with internationalization in mind. Text is everywhere - in plain HTML, in PHP variables, in echo's, in the DB... Now I'm familiar with the concept of gettext and this is what i plan to use for the internationalization project of the application. However the app is not written in English and here is my question: Should I first translate everything to English while wrapping every string in gettext() function, or I can use my native language as a base? P.S. also any quick suggestions (links maybe) on making my life easier with the whole i18n project will be greatly appreciated!

• Deleted some files from home folder

  I have recently installed Ubuntu for the first time in my life. So I am fairly new to it. I have deleted some files from my home folder. But now the problems have started. The system volume automatically reduces to zero. Further, as soon as I restarted my system, my panel settings we restored to default. When I right click in my home folder, it gives an option of 'restore missing files' but I am not able to restore them. Please guide me how to restore them. Thanks Narendra

• Any idea for a master thesis in software engineering

  Hi! I have to choose a thesis for my master degree. Time is limited to about 6 months. Do you have any idea? Any personal thesis that was successful? After searching around for some time now, i see the most famous topics are related to artificial intelligence, but i don't want something like that, because most of it would be just theory and boring. A lot of students present these kind of studies because those are the most difficult. I would prefer something that does not necessary include that mathematical complexity but which is an everyday-life topic, and gives concrete ideas, hypothesis, or solutions to some actual problems. Hope i gave my whole idea: i am looking for something that is different from the majority of what all students do, and able to impress the audience... :) I would really really appreciate any your suggestion, Thank you!
