• Should tests be in the same Ruby file or in separated Ruby files?

  While using Selenium and Ruby to do some functional tests, I am worried with the performance. So is it better to add all test methods in the same Ruby file, or I should put each one in separated code files? • Create a screencast in a low end PC, but fast (maybe by sacrificing compression ?)

  As the title suggests, I am asking a lot. We've been trying to generate some screencasts on my eeepc. recordmydesktop is doing the job decently, but only if allowed time to "compile" the video afterwards. If we ask it to do "on the fly", video and audio get out of sync. Now, we are creating many screencasts as practice (and like to watch them after, to criticize). Reducing quality is undesirable, because eventually a good practice run becomes the one we'll release. So we'd like a way to do screencasts "on the fly", with decent quality, on the low end machine. As nothing is ever free, we are willing to sacrifice: we don't care too much about compression: 20GB for a 15min video is acceptable

  In the delivery of software, and within the sense of the deployment pipeline, where do the responsibilities of build tools, like Maven, end, and the responsibilities of CI start? As a rough example of a problem that arises; should build tools have any responsibility to the configuration and execution of acceptance tests when they are further down the pipeline than actually building the artifact? I'd like an answer that addresses in the sense of deployment lifecycle phases rather than in specifics, like my example. Although examples would help bolster the answer.

• current_user and Comments on Posts - Create another association or loop posts? - Ruby on Rails

  I have created a blog application using Ruby on Rails and have just added an authentication piece and it is working nicely. I am now trying to go back through my application to adjust the code such that it only shows information that is associated with a certain user. Currently, Users has_many :posts and Posts has_many :comments. When a post is created I am successfully inserting the user_id into the post table. Additionally I am successfully only displaying the posts that belong to a certain user upon their login in the /views/posts/index.html.erb view. My problem is with the comments. For instance on the home page, when logged in, a user will see only posts that they have written, but comments from all users on all posts. Which is not what I want and need some direction in correcting. I want only to display the comments written on all of the logged in users posts. Do I need to create associations such that comments also belong to user? Or is there a way to adjust my code to simply loop through post to display this data. • How to create (via installer script) a task that will install my bash script so it runs on DE startup?

  I've been reading for the last couple hours about Upstart, .xinitrc, .xsessions, rc.local, /etc/init.d/, /etc/xdg/autostart, @reboot in crontab and so many other things that I'm totally confused! Here is my bash script. It should start/run after the desktop environment is started and it should continue to run at all times until logout/shutdown. It should start again on reboot. I'll consider other approaches but most of the things I've been reading about are too complex for me. Furthermore, I can't figure out which approach will meet my requirements (which I'll detail below). There are two steps in my question: How to automatically start the script above, as described above. How to "install" that Upstart task via a bash script (i.e., my "installer"). I assume (or hope) that step 2 is almost trivial once I understand step 1. I have to support all flavors of Ubuntu desktops. Therefore, the kdialog call above will be replaced. I'm considering easybashgui for this. (Or I could use zenity on gnome DE's.) My requirements are: The setup process (installation) must be done via a bash script. I cannot use the GUI method described in the Ubuntu doc AddingProgramToSessionStartup, for example. I must be able to script/automate the setup (installing) process using bash. Currently, it is as simple as having the bash installer script copy the above script into /home/$USER/.kde/Autostart/ The setup process must be universal across Ubuntu derivatives including Unity and KDE and gnome desktops. The same setup script (installer) should run on Linux Mint, Kubuntu, Xbuntu (basically any flavor of Ubuntu and major derivatives such as Linux Mint). For example, we cannot continue to put a script file in /home/$USER/.kde/Autostart/ because that exists only on KDE. The above script should work for each of the limited flavors we use. Hence our interest in using easybashgui instead of kdialog or zenity. See below. The installed monitoring script should only be started after the desktop is started since it will display a GUI message to the user if the update is found. The monitoring script (above) should run without root privileges, of course. But the installer (bash script) can be run as root. I'm not a real developer or a sysadmin. This is a part time volunteer thing for me, so it needs to be easy/simple. I can write bash scripts and I can program a little, but I know nothing about Upstart or systemd, for example. And, unfortunately, my job doesn't give me time to become an expert on init systems or much of anything else related to development and sysadmin. So I have to stick with simple solutions. Basically, what is happening is, i am loading All the bitmaps,sounds etc in the initializevariables() method. But sometimes the game crashes and sometimes it doesnt. So i decided to use async task.   The Overview I am working on a Continuous Integration build of a MFC appliction via CruiseControl.net and VS2010. When building my .sln, a "Visual Studio" CCNet task (<devenv/>) works, but a simple MSBuild wrapper script (see below) run via the CCNet <msbuild/> task fails with errors like: error RC1015: cannot open include file 'winres.h'.. error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afxwin.h': No such file or directory error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afx.h': No such file or directory The Question How can I adjust the build environment of my msbuild wrapper so that the application builds correctly? (Pretty clearly the MFC paths aren't right for the msbuild environment, but how do i fix it for MSBuild+VS2010+MFC+CCNet?) Background Details We have successfully upgraded an MFC application (.exe with some MFC extension .dlls) to Visual Studio 2010 and can compile the application without issue on developer machines. Now I am working on compiling the application on the CI server environment I did a full installation of VS2010 (Professional) on the build server. In this way, I knew everything I needed would be on the machine (one way or another) and that this would be consistent with developer machines. VS2010 is correctly installed on the CI server, and the devenv task works as expected I now have a wrapper MSBuild script that does some extended version processing and then builds the .sln for the application via an MSBuild task. Am I setting Environment variables? Registry settings? I can see how one can inject additional directories in some cases, but this seems to need a more systemic configuration at the compiler defaults level. Update 1 This appears to only ever happen in two cases: resource compilation (rc.exe), and precompiled header (stdafx.h) compilation, and only for certain projects? I was thinking it was across the board, but indeed it appears only to be in these cases. I guess I will keep digging and hope someone has some insight they would be willing to share...

• Implementing synchronous MediaTypeFormatters in ASP.NET Web API

  One of main characteristics of MediaTypeFormatter’s in ASP.NET Web API is that they leverage the Task Parallel Library (TPL) for reading or writing an model into an stream. When you derive your class from the base class MediaTypeFormatter, you have to either implement the WriteToStreamAsync or ReadFromStreamAsync methods for writing or reading a model from a stream respectively. In fact, many of the serializer classes you will find in the .NET framework only provide sync methods. So the question is, how you can transform that synchronous work into a Task ?. Creating a new task using the method Task.Factory.StartNew for doing all the serialization work would be probably the typical answer. That would work, as a new task is going to be scheduled.   As I was reading Martin Fowler's famous blog post Is Design Dead?, one of the striking impressions I got is that given the fact that in Agile Methodology and Extreme Programming, the design as well as programming is evolutionary, there are always points where things need to get refactored. It may be possible that when a programmer's level is good, and they understand design implications and don't make critical mistakes, the code continues to evolve. However, in a normal context, what is the ground reality in this context? In a normal day given some significant development goes into product, and when critical change occurs in requirement isn't it a constraint that how much ever we wish, fundamental design aspects cannot be modified? (without throwing away major part of the code). Is it not quite likely that one reaches dead-end on any further possible improvement on design and requirements? I am not advocating any non-Agile practice here, but I want to know from people who practice agile or iterative or evolutionary development methods, as for their real experiences. Have you ever reached such dead-ends? How have you managed to avoid it or escaped it? Or are there measures to ensure that design remains clean and flexible as it evolves?

• Why is purchasing Microsoft licences such a daunting task? [closed]

  I've spent 2 frustrating days jumping through hoops and browsing through different local e-shops for VS (Visual Studio) 2010 Pro. And WHS (Windows Home Server) FPP 2011 licenses. I found jack .. - or to be more precise, the closest I found in my country was WHS OEM 2011 licenses after multiple emails sent to individuals found on Microsoft partners page. Question being, why is it so difficult to get your hands on Microsoft licenses as an individual? Sure, you can get the latest end user operating systems from most shops, but when it comes to development tools or server software you are left dry. And companies that do sell licenses most of the time don't even put up pricing or a self service environment for buying the licenses, you need to have an hawk's eye for that shiny little Microsoft partner logo and spam through bunch of emails not knowing, if you can count on them to get the license or not. Sure, i could whip out my credit card and buy the VS 2010 license on the online Microsoft Shop. Well whippideegoddamndoo, they sell that, but they don't sell WHS 11 licenses. Why does a company make it so hard to buy their products? Let's not even talk about the licensing itself being a pain.

• How to simulate Apache [END] flag on a redirect?

  For business-specific reasons I created the following rewrite rule for Apache 2.2.22 (mod_rewrite): RewriteRule /site/(\d+)/([^/]+)\.html /site/$2/$1 [R=301,L] Which if given an URL like: http://www.mydomain.com/site/0999/document.html Is translated to: http://www.mydomain.com/site/document/0999.html That's the expected scenario. However, there are documents which name are only numbers. So consider the following case: http://www.mydomain.com/site/0055/0666.html Gets translated to: http://www.mydomain.com/site/0666/0055.html Which also matches my rewrite rule pattern, so I end up with "The web page resulted in too many redirects" errors from browsers. I have researched for a long time, and haven't found "good" solutions. Things I tried: Use the [END] flag. Unfortunately is not available on my Apache version nor it works with redirects. Use %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} on a RewriteCond clause to end the rewrite process (L). For some reason %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} is empty all the times I tried. Add a response header with the Header clause if my rule matches and then check for that header (see: here for details). Seems that a) REDIRECT_addHeader is empty b) headers are can't be set on the 301 response explicitly. There is another alternative. I could set a query parameter to the redirect URL which indicates it comes from a redirect, but I don't like that solution as it seems to hacky. Is there a way to do exactly what the [END] flag does but in older Apache versions? Such as mine 2.2.22. Thanks!

  I am adding a new application to my site at example.com/app. I want views at that URL to always open myapp.php. E.g. example.com/app -> example.com/app/myapp.php and example.com/app/ -> example.com/app/myapp.php What's the correct form of rewrite rules in the .htaccess file? I've got: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /app/ RewriteRule ^myapp\.php$ - [L] RewriteRule ^myapp.php$ - [L] RewriteRule . - [L] </IfModule> ...based on what the Wordpress front-end does. But all I see at example.com/app is a directory of files. :( (I put those rewrites at the top of my .htaccess file). Any ideas? Item 4 is Wordpress-like Front Controller pattern behaviour. I think that rule RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/app.*$ [NC] needs refining as it allows /app-oh-my-goodness etc. through too.   Is there a way to cat all files in a given directory, but with a particular file at the beginning and end? For example, say I have: file1.js, file2.js, file3.js, file4.js, file5.js -- Effectively I would like to cat file2.js file*.js file3.js > /var/www/output.js I've tried a few variations of these find ! -name "file2.js" ! -name "file3.js" -type f -exec cat file2.js {} file3.js > /var/www/js/output.js \; find ! -name "file2.js" ! -name "file3.js" -type f | xargs -I files cat file2.js files file3.js > /var/www/output.js but the best I can get out of it is file2.js added before and file3.js added after all other files (multiple times) I know I could specify the files in the order I wanted manually, but this is not maintainable (I'm expecting, potentially 100 files). I have looked through man cat, as well as a handful of websites devoted to xargs, find and cat to no avail. Thanks in advance.

• Run Sinatra via a Rake Task to Generate Static Files?

  I'm not sure I can put this correctly but I'll give it a shot. I want to use Sinatra to generate static html files once I am ready to deploy an application, so the resulting final website would be pure static HTML. During development, however, I want everything to be dynamic so I can use Haml and straight Ruby code to make things fast/dry/clear. I don't want to use Jekyll or some of the other static site generators out there because they don't have as much power as Sinatra. So all I basically need to be able to do is run a rake task such as: rake sinatra:generate_static_files. That would run the render commands for Haml and everything else, and the result would be written to files. My question is, how do I do that with Sinatra in a Rake task? Can I do it in a Rake task? The problem is, I don't know how to include the Sinatra::Application in the rake task... The only other way I could think of doing it is using net/http to access a URL that does all of that, but that seems like overkill. Any ideas how on to solve this?

  I'm attempting to automate a really old dos application. I've decided the best way to do this is via input redirection. The legacy app (menu driven) has many tasks within tasks with branching logic. In order to easily understand and reuse the input for these tasks, I'd like to break them into bit size pieces. Since I'll need to start a fresh app on each run, repeating a context to consume a bit might be messy. I'd like to create an object model that: allows me to concentrate on the task at hand allows me to reuse common tasks from different start points prevents me from calling a task from the wrong start point To be more explicit, given I have the following task hierarchy: START A A1 A1a A1b A2 A2a B B1 B1a I'd like an object model that lets me generate an input file for task "A1b" buy using building blocks like: START -> do_A, do_A1, do_A1b but prevents me from: START -> do_A1 // because I'm assuming a different call chain from above This will help me write "do_A1b" because I can always assume the same starting context and will simplify writing "do_A1a" because it has THE SAME starting context. What patterns will help me out here? I'm using ruby at the moment so if dynamic language features can help, I'm game.

• Jquery Date Picker: Append Start Date to End Date and display dates in the future only.

  Hello, I am using Jquery Date pickers to get Start and End Dates for an application I am building. I have two datepickers, one for a start date and one for an end date. When someone clicks a date in the start date picker I need that date to be appended automatically to the end date picker. I also need the end date picker to select future dates only from the date that has been appended to it. There are two demos on the jquery datepicker site that do what I want, but I am unsure how to combine them to both do what I want.
