Is it possible to put the value entered in the msgbox at the time the macro is run in a table by itself?   • SQL SERVER – SSMS: Memory Usage By Memory Optimized Objects Report

    At conferences and at speaking engagements at the local UG, there is one question that keeps on coming which I wish were never asked. The question around, “Why is SQL Server using up all the memory and not releasing even when idle?” Well, the answer can be long and with the release of SQL Server 2014, this got even more complicated. This release of SQL Server 2014 has the option of introducing In-Memory OLTP which is completely new concept and our dependency on memory has increased multifold. In reality, nothing much changes but we have memory optimized objects (Tables and Stored Procedures) additional which are residing completely in memory and improving performance. As a DBA, it is humanly impossible to get a hang of all the innovations and the new features introduced in the next version. So today’s blog is around the report added to SSMS which gives a high level view of this new feature addition. This reports is available only from SQL Server 2014 onwards because the feature was introduced in SQL Server 2014. Earlier versions of SQL Server Management Studio would not show the report in the list. If we try to launch the report on the database which is not having In-Memory File group defined, then we would see the message in report. To demonstrate, I have created new fresh database called MemoryOptimizedDB with no special file group. Here is the query used to identify whether a database has memory-optimized file group or not. SELECT TOP(1) 1 FROM sys.filegroups FG WHERE FG.[type] = 'FX' Once we add filegroup using below command, we would see different version of report. USE [master] GO ALTER DATABASE [MemoryOptimizedDB] ADD FILEGROUP [IMO_FG] CONTAINS MEMORY_OPTIMIZED_DATA GO The report is still empty because we have not defined any Memory Optimized table in the database.  Total allocated size is shown as 0 MB. Now, let’s add the folder location into the filegroup and also created few in-memory tables. We have used the nomenclature of IMO to denote “InMemory Optimized” objects. USE [master] GO ALTER DATABASE [MemoryOptimizedDB] ADD FILE ( NAME = N'MemoryOptimizedDB_IMO', FILENAME = N'E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014\MSSQL\DATA\MemoryOptimizedDB_IMO') TO FILEGROUP [IMO_FG] GO You may have to change the path based on your SQL Server configuration. Below is the script to create the table. USE MemoryOptimizedDB GO --Drop table if it already exists. IF OBJECT_ID('dbo.SQLAuthority','U') IS NOT NULL DROP TABLE dbo.SQLAuthority GO CREATE TABLE dbo.SQLAuthority ( ID INT IDENTITY NOT NULL, Name CHAR(500)  COLLATE Latin1_General_100_BIN2 NOT NULL DEFAULT 'Pinal', CONSTRAINT PK_SQLAuthority_ID PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED (ID), INDEX hash_index_sample_memoryoptimizedtable_c2 HASH (Name) WITH (BUCKET_COUNT = 131072) ) WITH (MEMORY_OPTIMIZED = ON, DURABILITY = SCHEMA_AND_DATA) GO As soon as above script is executed, table and index both are created. If we run the report again, we would see something like below. Notice that table memory is zero but index is using memory. This is due to the fact that hash index needs memory to manage the buckets created. So even if table is empty, index would consume memory. More about the internals of how In-Memory indexes and tables work will be reserved for future posts. Now, use below script to populate the table with 10000 rows INSERT INTO SQLAuthority VALUES (DEFAULT) GO 10000 Here is the same report after inserting 1000 rows into our InMemory table.    There are total three sections in the whole report. Total Memory consumed by In-Memory Objects Pie chart showing memory distribution based on type of consumer – table, index and system. Details of memory usage by each table. The information about all three is taken from one single DMV, sys.dm_db_xtp_table_memory_stats This DMV contains memory usage statistics for both user and system In-Memory tables. If we query the DMV and look at data, we can easily notice that the system tables have negative object IDs.  So, to look at user table memory usage, below is the over-simplified version of query. USE MemoryOptimizedDB GO SELECT OBJECT_NAME(OBJECT_ID), * FROM sys.dm_db_xtp_table_memory_stats WHERE OBJECT_ID > 0 GO This report would help DBA to identify which in-memory object taking lot of memory which can be used as a pointer for designing solution. I am sure in future we will discuss at lengths the whole concept of In-Memory tables in detail over this blog.   • How would you advocate not using a shared spreadsheet to track bugs / issues ?

    In our company, the developers want to use a proper bug tracking tool to manager issues in our application. The management however insists on using a shared spreadsheet (formeerly a shared excel file, now a spreadsheet on a web base solution allowing concurrent access). Their argument is that the spreadsheet allow them to have a more highlevel view of the state of the project as they can see how many bugs are open with a quick glance. This also allow them to see who is working on each bug, and get estimation of the time required to close them all (as developer are required to fill time estimation of the bug they are working on). As you can understand, this is not really practical to use for the developers (bug tracking software were invented for a reason). So how can I advocate bug tracking software to ease the work of the developer ? As a bonus, which software would you recommend that would allow the management to be able to get their feedbacks (number of bugs opens, who is working on them, time estimation) with a high level view ?

  • Launcher disappears when Focuswriter is minimized

    This bug has to do with the integration of the full-screen writing app Focuswriter within Unity. It appeared before I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 - probably caused by a an automatically upgraded change that persist in 12.10: When I minimize Focuswriter after it has been in full-screen mode the launcher is invisible - instead of seeing it I just see a rectangle the color of my desktop background where it should have been. The launcher becomes visible if I click the area once but then I'm likely to hit an icon and unwillingly open a program. I've reported the bug to the developer of the program here: https://github.com/gottcode/focuswriter/issues/101 He has labeled the bug "upstream" saying that the bug is can only be fixed in Unity. My questions are: 1) does anyone (perhaps experiencing problems with other full-screen programs) have a solution or workaround so the launcher won't disappear? 2) where can I file a bug report for this problem?

  • Cufon text z-index (IE6 and IE7 stylish select box bug)

    Hello, I'm replacing some text with cufon on my page and I'm using jquery stylish select box plugin (http://www.scottdarby.com/plugins/stylish-select/0.4/) to style select boxes. The problem is that, in IE6 and IE7, select box goes under the cufonized text. (the select box is actually an <ul>). Anyone had this issue before? Thanks, Adrian

I've never encountered this problem before and have no idea what's going on with it. Any ideas that would point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

  • IE 6 bug? width: 987

    I'm having a very weird issue in IE6. If I set a div container do the width of 987px it adds a spacing between the container and an absolute positioned element inside. Any other width works fine, it's just 987. Is there something I'm not seeing?   • IE6 Bug - Div within Anchor tag: inline images not links

    I'm trying to get everything in the anchor tag to be a clickable link. Unfortunately, in IE6 (which is the only browser I'm concerned with currently), the only thing that isn't a clickable link are the inline images. I know that it's not valid html to put a div inside of an anchor but it's not my markup and I've been asked to avoid changing it. Any suggestions to altering the CSS to enable the images as clickable links? If changing the markup is the only solution... any suggestions there? My initial thought was to set the image as a background of it's parent (.ph-item-featured-img), although I'm unclear if that will solve the problem.   • Internal bug tracking tickets - Redmine, Trac, or JIRA

    I've been looking at setting up Redmine, Trac, or JIRA to track issues. I want to be able to have my development team create internal tickets that are never seen by clients, while clients can create/edit tickets that are seen by the internal team. From the Trac documentation, you can set permissions to create or view tickets, but it doesn't seem to allow for viewing only certain tickets. It may be possible with Trac Fine Grained Permissions, but doesn't appear so. The Redmine documentation mentions: Define your own roles and set their permissions in a click but doesn't appear to have the level of granularity. From the JIRA documentation: At the moment JIRA is only able to support security at a project level or issue level. Currently there is no field level security available. According to this question, Redmine doesn't support internal tickets, so you would have to use multiple projects. I don't want a situation where I would have to create multiple projects - one internal, one external and have the external tickets brought into the internal repository. It seems as this would lead to unnecessary overhead and inevitably, the projects wouldn't be in sync. Is there any way with any of these products (possibly through a plug-in if not in the core product itself) to specify these permissions, or simplify having two projects with different users and permissions that must still share information?

However, the first tap issued doesn't take any action but adds one (just as planned) on the second tap.   • IE7 div floating bug

    I have the following <div id="border" style="width:100%; border:8px solid #FFF"> <div id="menu" style="width:250px; float:left;" > Some menu </div> <div id="content" style="padding-left:270px; width:520px;" > Main page content </div> </div> This gives me a left aligned menu and the content to the right of it, all surrounded by a border. On all browsers including IE8 it displays correctly. But on IE7 the content only starts below the menu, and leaves a big open space to the right of the menu. I have searched all kind of solutions and tried all kinds of combinations of right, left, none for float. clearing left right both. It always displays different on the browsers. Any help is appreciated. Michael

  • C++ struct containing unsigned char and int bug

    Ok i have a struct in my C++ program that is like this: struct thestruct { unsigned char var1; unsigned char var2; unsigned char var3[2]; unsigned char var4; unsigned char var5[8]; int var6; unsigned char var7[4]; }; When i use this struct, 3 random bytes get added before the "var6", if i delete "var5" it's still before "var6" so i know it's always before the "var6". But if i remove the "var6" then the 3 extra bytes are gone. If i only use a struct with a int in it, there is no extra bytes. So there seem to be a conflict between the unsigned char and the int, how can i fix that?

  • Layout Bug in IE (div relative)

    Hi, I have a problem with IE (all versions). I have a header div with a relative position and inside this another div with absolute position and right alignment. <div id="header" style="position: relative; width: 1000px; height: 60px;"> content http://stadtwerke-bitburg.de/fileadmin/overflow_prob_IE.png Now when I open the pulldown menu in FF/Safari/Opera everything is all right. Whereas in IE everything which is taller than 60px disappears behind my header div. Is there a workaround for this problem with CSS or do I have to write javascript to get this fixed? thx TC
