• Who is code wanderer?

  In every area of life there are people with some bad habits or misbehaviors that affect the work process. Software development is also not free of this kind of people. Today I will introduce you code wanderer. Who is code wanderer? Code wandering is more like bad habit than serious diagnose. Code wanderers tend to review and “fix” source code in files written by others. When code wanderer has some free moments he starts to open the code files he or she has never seen before and starts making little fixes to these files. Why is code wanderer dangerous? These fixes seem correct and are usually first choice to do when considering nice code. But as changes are made by coder who has no idea about the code he or she “fixes” then “fixing” usually ends up with messing up working code written by others. Often these “fixes” are not found immediately because they doesn’t introduce errors detected by compilers. So these “fixes” find easily way to production environments because there is also very good chance that “fixed” code goes through all tests without any problems. How to stop code wanderer? The first thing is to talk with person and explain him or her why those changes are dangerous. It is also good to establish rules that state clearly why, when and how can somebody change the code written by other people. If this does not work it is possible to isolate this person so he or she can post his or her changes to code repository as patches and somebody reviews those changes before applying them.

Obviously the person taking the dictation would need to be a coder too, so you didn't have to explain everything and go into tedious detail (not 'open bracket, new line...' but more like 'create a new class called myParser that takes three arguments, first one is...'). I thought of it because sometimes I'm too easily distracted at my computer. Surrounded by buttons, instant gratification a click away, the world at my fingertips. To get stuff done, I want to get away, write my code on paper. But that would mean losing access to necessary resources, and necessitate tedious typing-up later on. The solution? Dictate. Pros: no chance to check reddit, stackexchange, gmail, etc. code while you pace the room, lie down, play billiards, whatever train your brain to think more abstractedly (have to visualize things if you can't just see the screen) skip the tedious details (closing brackets etc.) the typist gets to shadow a more experienced programmer and learn how they work the typist can provide assistance/suggestions external pressure of typist expecting instructions, urging you to stay focussed Cons might be too hard might not work any better rather inefficient use of assisting programmer need to find/pay someone to do this

• BizTalk HL7 Receive Pipeline Exception

  If you experience sequence of errors below with BizTalk HL7 MLLP receive ports you may need to request a hotfix from Microsoft. Knowledge base article number is 2454887 but it’s still not available on the KB site. The hotfix is recently released and you may need to open support ticket to get to it. It requires three other hotfixes installed: ·         970492 (DASM 3.7.502.2) ·         973909 (additional ACK codes) ·         981442 (Microsoft.solutions.btahl7.mllp.dll 3.7.509.2) If the exceptions below repeatedly appear in the event log you most likely would be helped by the hotfix: Fatal error encountered in 2XDasm. Exception information is Cannot access a disposed object. Object name: 'CEventingReadStream'. There was a failure executing the receive pipeline: "BTAHL72XPipelines.BTAHL72XReceivePipeline, BTAHL72XPipelines, Version=1.3.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" Source: "BTAHL7 2.X Disassembler" Receive Port: "ReceivePortName" URI: "IPAddress:portNumber" Reason: Cannot access a disposed object. • How to emulate pressing the Close button from a script?

  I wanted Thunderbird to stay in the Background to notify me of incoming mails. After a bit of searching, I found this post. How to keep Thunderbird and Pidgin running on background? The solution is to install an addon so that when we close Thunderbird it just stays in the background. Now, to have thunderbird running at Start up we can just add it to Startup Applications. But, when I open my system, Thunderbird also gets opened and I have to manually press the close button everytime to make Thunderbird go into the background. The solution given in the above post for this problem is to select Minimize on start. But doing so affects the way in which Thunderbird works when invoked from the Messaging menu. So I deselected this option. But, if there is a way to emulate pressing the Close button from a script, I can just add that script to Startup Applications So is there a way to achieve this? Note : If there is a simpler way to solve my original problem of keeping Thunderbird in background please post that also. Many thanks.

• New Enhancements for InnoDB Memcached

  In MySQL 5.6, we continued our development on InnoDB Memcached and completed a few widely desirable features that make InnoDB Memcached a competitive feature in more scenario. Notablely, they are 1) Support multiple table mapping 2) Added background thread to auto-commit long running transactions 3) Enhancement in binlog performance  Let’s go over each of these features one by one. And in the last section, we will go over a couple of internally performed performance tests. Support multiple table mapping In our earlier release, all InnoDB Memcached operations are mapped to a single InnoDB table. In the real life, user might want to use this InnoDB Memcached features on different tables. Thus being able to support access to different table at run time, and having different mapping for different connections becomes a very desirable feature. And in this GA release, we allow user just be able to do both. We will discuss the key concepts and key steps in using this feature. 1) "mapping name" in the "get" and "set" command In order to allow InnoDB Memcached map to a new table, the user (DBA) would still require to "pre-register" table(s) in InnoDB Memcached “containers” table (there is security consideration for this requirement). If you would like to know about “containers” table, please refer to my earlier blogs in blogs.innodb.com. Once registered, the InnoDB Memcached will then be able to look for such table when they are referred. Each of such registered table will have a unique "registration name" (or mapping_name) corresponding to the “name” field in the “containers” table.. To access these tables, user will include such "registration name" in their get or set commands, in the form of "get @@new_mapping_name.key", prefix "@@" is required for signaling a mapped table change. The key and the "mapping name" are separated by a configurable delimiter, by default, it is ".". So the syntax is: get [@@mapping_name.]key_name set [@@mapping_name.]key_name  or  get @@mapping_name set @@mapping_name Here is an example: Let's set up three tables in the "containers" table: The first is a map to InnoDB table "test/demo_test" table with mapping name "setup_1" INSERT INTO containers VALUES ("setup_1", "test", "demo_test", "c1", "c2", "c3", "c4", "c5", "PRIMARY");  Similarly, we set up table mappings for table "test/new_demo" with name "setup_2" and that to table "mydatabase/my_demo" with name "setup_3": INSERT INTO containers VALUES ("setup_2", "test", "new_demo", "c1", "c2", "c3", "c4", "c5", "secondary_index_x"); INSERT INTO containers VALUES ("setup_3", "my_database", "my_demo", "c1", "c2", "c3", "c4", "c5", "idx"); To switch to table "my_database/my_demo", and get the value corresponding to “key_a”, user will do: get @@setup_3.key_a (this will also output the value that corresponding to key "key_a" or simply get @@setup_3 Once this is done, this connection will switch to "my_database/my_demo" table until another table mapping switch is requested. so it can continue issue regular command like: get key_b  set key_c 0 0 7 These DMLs will all be directed to "my_database/my_demo" table. And this also implies that different connections can have different bindings (to different table). 2) Delimiter: For the delimiter "." that separates the "mapping name" and key value, we also added a configure option in the "config_options" system table with name of "table_map_delimiter": INSERT INTO config_options VALUES("table_map_delimiter", "."); So if user wants to change to a different delimiter, they can change it in the config_option table. 3) Default mapping: Once we have multiple table mapping, there should be always a "default" map setting. For this, we decided if there exists a mapping name of "default", then this will be chosen as default mapping. Otherwise, the first row of the containers table will chosen as default setting. Please note, user tables can be repeated in the "containers" table (for example, user wants to access different columns of the table in different settings), as long as they are using different mapping/configure names in the first column, which is enforced by a unique index. 4) bind command In addition, we also extend the protocol and added a bind command, its usage is fairly straightforward. To switch to "setup_3" mapping above, you simply issue: bind setup_3 This will switch this connection's InnoDB table to "my_database/my_demo" In summary, with this feature, you now can direct access to difference tables with difference session. And even a single connection, you can query into difference tables. Background thread to auto-commit long running transactions This is a feature related to the “batch” concept we discussed in earlier blogs. This “batch” feature allows us batch the read and write operations, and commit them only after certain calls. The “batch” size is controlled by the configure parameter “daemon_memcached_w_batch_size” and “daemon_memcached_r_batch_size”. This could significantly boost performance. However, it also comes with some disadvantages, for example, you will not be able to view “uncommitted” operations from SQL end unless you set transaction isolation level to read_uncommitted, and in addition, this will held certain row locks for extend period of time that might reduce the concurrency. To deal with this, we introduce a background thread that “auto-commits” the transaction if they are idle for certain amount of time (default is 5 seconds). The background thread will wake up every second and loop through every “connections” opened by Memcached, and check for idle transactions. And if such transaction is idle longer than certain limit and not being used, it will commit such transactions. This limit is configurable by change “innodb_api_bk_commit_interval”. Its default value is 5 seconds, and minimum is 1 second, and maximum is 1073741824 seconds. With the help of such background thread, you will not need to worry about long running uncommitted transactions when set daemon_memcached_w_batch_size and daemon_memcached_r_batch_size to a large number. This also reduces the number of locks that could be held due to long running transactions, and thus further increase the concurrency. Enhancement in binlog performance As you might all know, binlog operation is not done by InnoDB storage engine, rather it is handled in the MySQL layer. In order to support binlog operation through InnoDB Memcached, we would have to artificially create some MySQL constructs in order to access binlog handler APIs. In previous lab release, for simplicity consideration, we open and destroy these MySQL constructs (such as THD) for each operations. This required us to set the “batch” size always to 1 when binlog is on, no matter what “daemon_memcached_w_batch_size” and “daemon_memcached_r_batch_size” are configured to. This put a big restriction on our capability to scale, and also there are quite a bit overhead in creating destroying such constructs that bogs the performance down. With this release, we made necessary change that would keep MySQL constructs as long as they are valid for a particular connection. So there will not be repeated and redundant open and close (table) calls. And now even with binlog option is enabled (with innodb_api_enable_binlog,), we still can batch the transactions with daemon_memcached_w_batch_size and daemon_memcached_r_batch_size, thus scale the write/read performance. Although there are still overheads that makes InnoDB Memcached cannot perform as fast as when binlog is turned off. It is much better off comparing to previous release. And we are continuing optimize the solution is this area to improve the performance as much as possible. Performance Study: Amerandra of our System QA team have conducted some performance studies on queries through our InnoDB Memcached connection and plain SQL end. And it shows some interesting results. The test is conducted on a “Linux 2.6.32-300.7.1.el6uek.x86_64 ix86 (64)” machine with 16 GB Memory, Intel Xeon 2.0 GHz CPU X86_64 2 CPUs- 4 Core Each, 2 RAID DISKS (1027 GB,733.9GB). If it does exist, the “value” field of matching row (by key) will be updated. So when used in above query, it is a precompiled store procedure, and query will just execute such procedures. *** added “–daemon_memcached_option=-t8” (default is 4 threads) So we can see with this “set” query, InnoDB Memcached can run 4.5 to 9 time faster than MySQL server. Summary: In summary, we added several much-desired features to InnoDB Memcached in this release, allowing user to operate on different tables with this Memcached interface. We also now provide a background commit thread to commit long running idle transactions, thus allow user to configure large batch write/read without worrying about large number of rows held or not being able to see (uncommit) data. We also greatly enhanced the performance when Binlog is enabled. We will continue making efforts in both performance enhancement and functionality areas to make InnoDB Memcached a good demo case for our InnoDB APIs. Jimmy Yang, September 29, 2012

• How can I make PDFs appear life-size when displayed at 100%?

  When I open a letter size PDF and then zoom to 100%, the page physically displayed on my monitor is smaller than a real letter size sheet of paper. How can I make "100%" on the computer screen correspond with "100%" in real life? Details This message suggests that I should be investigating the system-wide DPI settings for my monitor. xdpyinfo reports: dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (271x203 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch My monitor has a native display resolution of 1024x768 pixels and a diagonal display size of 12.07 inches. PX CALC returns the following information: DPI: 106.05 Dot Pitch: 0.2395mm Size: 9.66" × 7.24" (24.53cm × 18.39cm) What I've tried so far Running xrandr --dpi 106.05 successfully caused my PDF to appear actual size at 100%, but this effect was lost after rebooting. To make the setting persistent I tried creating the following /etc/X11/xorg.conf: Section "Monitor" Identifier "ThinkPad X60 LCD" DisplaySize 245 183 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Monitor "ThinkPad X60 LCD" EndSection After re-logging in, /var/log/Xorg.0.log contained [ 1167.824] (**) intel(0): Display dimensions: (245, 183) mm [ 1167.824] (**) intel(0): DPI set to (106, 106) but xdpyinfo still reported dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (271x203 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch and "100%" still appeared too small.   Hello, my name is Iva and I am a member of the Internship program at Oracle Czech. When I joined Oracle, I initially worked as an Alliances and Channel Marketing Assistant at Oracle Czech Republic, but most recently, I have been working in the Demand Generation Team. I am a student of the Economics and Management Faculty at Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, specializing in Marketing, Business and Administration. I have recently passed my Bachelor exams. I received the information about Oracle’s Internship opportunity from a friend. I joined Oracle in September 2008 and worked as an Alliances and Channel Marketing Assistant until May 2009. Here I was responsible for the Open Market Model (OMM) and at the same time I was covering communication with Partners, Oracle Events and Team Buildings as well as creating Partner Databases and Reports. At the moment, I support our Demand Generation Team to execute Direct Marketing campaigns in Czech Republic, Slovak Republic and Hungary. In addition to this, I help with Reporting and Contact Data Management for the whole of the European Enlargement (EE) and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) regions. I enjoy my job and I appreciate the experience. Every day is interesting, because every day I learn something new.   NOTE - Although this question is for a specific version of Ubuntu and a specific Broadcom model, the answer to it is for most Broadcom models and versions of Ubuntu 11.04, 11.10, 12.04 and 12.10. If you have come here from another question, feel free to read the answer instead. The answer covers many problems with several solutions. I'm having serious problems installing the Broadcom drivers for Ubuntu 11.04. It worked perfectly on my previous version, but now, it is impossible. I'm a user with no advance knowledge in Linux, so I would need clear explanations on make, compile, etc. I was following the instructions on the following blog, with no luck. How can I get Broadcom BCM4311 Wireless working? Can someone help me? Edit: For the command: "lspci | grep Network", I get the following message: 06:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) For the command: iwconfig, i get the following: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. • The biggest ADF conference "down under"

  While Oracle Open World is the place to be for ADF presentations, for Aussies living in Perth, San Francisco is a tad far away (believe me from experience, the 23hrs flight from PER-SYD-SFO is tedious).  That's why I'm very excited to see that the Australian Oracle User Group at this year's Perth conference is running its largest set of ADF presentation to date: 5! Okay, it doesn't compare to the 60 ADF sessions at OOW, but it's a small conference of around 300 people that runs for 2 days with 54 sessions total, not 40000 people that runs for 5 days with 1900+ sessions, so I think that's a good effort for a conference that's at the end of the earth!   Hi, requested use case is having a Windows XP SP3 guest running in 64bit Ubuntu. (Linux pcs 2.6.35-22-server #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 22:02:33 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux) I want this guest to access an LVM LV on the Ubuntu disk. I've setup the following LVM config: --- Logical volume --- LV Name /dev/storage/sdc1 VG Name storage LV UUID Zg5IMC-OlqB-prL5-fgg4-3A9A-OgKP-oZ0QkJ LV Write Access read/write LV Status available # open 0 LV Size 1.01 GiB Current LE 259 Segments 1 Allocation inherit Read ahead sectors auto - currently set to 256 Block device 251:3 -- 1) I've setup a storage pool for /dev/storage 2) I've mkfs.vfat /dev/storage/sdc1 3) and made a virtual IDE disk in the virt-manager setup for the guest. Target device: IDE Disk 2 Source path: /dev/storage/sdc1 -- Now when running XP (guest) Windows sees a new disk in Disk Manager and want's to install a partition on it, since it believes the drive is empty. After formatting from within Windows I can put data on the new disk volume. -- Back in Ubuntu however I cannot access this this any more since it created a partition within an LVM Logical Volume. • PowerShell One Liner: Duplicating a folder structure in a Sharepoint document library

  I was asked by someone at work the other day, if it was possible in Sharepoint to create a set of top level folders in one document library based on the set of folders in another library. One document library has a set of top level folders that is basically a client list and we needed to create the same top level folders in another library. I knew that it was possible to open a Sharepoint document library in explorer using a UNC style path and that you could map a drive using a technique like this one: http://www.endusersharepoint.com/2007/11/16/can-i-map-a-document-library-as-a-mapped-drive/. But while explorer would let us copy the folders, it would also take all of the folder contents too, which was not what we wanted. So I figured that some sort of PowerShell script was probably the way to go and it turned out to be even easier than I thought. The following script did it in one line, so I thought I would post it here in my "online memory". :) dir "\\sharepoint\client documents" | where {$_.PSIsContainer} | % {mkdir "\\sharepoint\admin documents\$($_.Name)"} I use "dir" to get a listing from the source folder, pipe it through "where" to get only objects that are folders and then do a foreach (using the % alias) and call "mkdir".

• Spring Roo Database Reverse Engineer with Oracle

  So you are trying to reverse engineer an Oracle database with roo? Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions with the Oracle JDBC Drivers, this is a little difficult. There are a few blog posts and forum threads that address the problem but I figured I would post what worked for me here. First, you need to download the appropriate Oracle Drivers from Oracle. The required login, stringent password requirements, nosy registration form, and general system instability made this a pretty painful step for me. I’d also like to say that companies that have password requirements that don’t allow symbols (or any other non-standard requirement) have a special place in my heart. Having to recover my password every time I go to your site virtually guarantees I will only go there when I absolutely have to (not often). Anyways, once you have it downloaded you need to install is with maven: mvn install:install-file -Dfile=~/Downloads/ojdbc6.jar -DgroupId=com.oracle -DartifactId=ojdbc6 -Dversion=11.2.0.3 -Dpackaging=jar -DgeneratePom=true Here comes the fun part. You need to create an osgi wrapper for the driver to install it in roo. Otherwise, roo cannot see the driver. Create a new folder and put the contents of the oracle roo addon pom gist I created. Now build it with maven. • What is a good basic/flexible cms for a small website? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Which Content Management System (CMS) should I use? I'm designing a very basic portfolio website for an artist. It features a blog, portfolio, cv and contact page. I've handcoded the basics of this site in php/java, as it is a very small website (and I like coding by hand). But I need a simple cms backend for the dynamic parts of the website (the blog/portfolio). The big systems (ruby, joomla, wordpress) are far too invasive for my liking (and frankly a bit beyond my capabilities). Wordpress for example, requires too much adaptation of the design to the wordpress structure, and ruby is far too extensive for a simple site like this (in my opinion). So what I'm looking for is a (preferably open source) cms that has a simple backend for the artist to use as a blogger, with a mysql database for the content, that will allow me to insert content with simple tags (using smarty tags for example), but is otherwise not too invasive or demanding in terms of the required page structure. Does anyone know of a good cms that fits this description? p.s.: I have tried phpnews and cmsmadesimple, but phpnews was a litte too basic (but very close too what I'm looking for) and cmsmadesimple was way too slow (but otherwise also pretty close too what I wanted, though a bit too extensive).

  Following the instructions on the pipelight installation page, I installed pipelight on Ubuntu 14.04. However, upon opening firefox the .wine-pipelight folder isn't present in my home folder, and I get the following errors: [PIPELIGHT:LIN:unknown] attached to process. • B.S.in Computer Science, weak eyes => career change

  So I am going to earn B.S. in Computer Science soon. I like computers. I like programming. The problem is that my eyes are very weak. Depending on their condition, I can only put in about 6 hours in front of computer a day. If I push myself, I have trouble even keeping my eyes open because of soreness/pain, consequently headaches. My eyes do not have medical conditions. I was just born with weak eyes. I tried many different approaches to work around this problem - better monitor, breaks every 10 minutes, supplements... I even memorized a lot of shortcuts to reduce my time on computers! But I am finally giving up. I do not think I can be a programmer for the rest of my life. I was the top of my class in high school because all works were paper-based, I did average in college due to the nature of my eyes and the difficulty of the material. So what do you recommend I do? Or, Is there a career that is similar to programming but requires interacting with computers less?

  A recurring theme you'll find throughout this blog is that IRM needs to balance security with usability and manageability. One of the innovations in Oracle IRM 11g typifies this, as we have introduced a new right that may be included in any role - Accessibility. When creating or modifying a role, you simply select Accessibility along with Open, Print, Edit or whatever rights you want to include in the role. You might, for example, have parallel roles of Reader and Reader with Accessibility and Contributor and Contributor with Accessibility. The effect of the Accessibility right is to relax some of the protection of content in use such that selected users can use accessibility tools. For example, a user with the Accessibility right would be able to use the screen magnification tool, which IRM would ordinarily prevent because it involves screen capture. This new right makes it easy for you to apply security to documents yet, subject to suitable approval processes, cater for the fact that a subset of users might be disproportionately inconvenienced by some of the normal usage constraints. Rather than make those users put up with the restrictions, or perhaps exempt them from using sealed documents altogether, this new right allows you to accommodate them in a controlled manner, and to balance security with corporate accessibility goals.
