  I want to set up a VPN on my laptop but I don't know what and how to set it. My requirements are : Intranet with a customizable list of shared folders. Intranet outsourced via computer wifi. Possibly assigning individual private IP addresses to all connected. Facility to share internet (if hassel free). Can I do this using Gnome Network Manager or do I need another program? I'll be happy even if I get one folder to share for the time being and no internet if I could only outsource one file/folder.

In Windows I can use Connectify Hotspot, which enables me to share the internet connection from the same wireless adapter as I am creating an access point on. As you can read on the technology overview page: Access Point mode allows you to create a hotspot using the same Wi-Fi card that you are using to access the Internet. How do I do this on Ubuntu?

  I have a Java project I am building with Maven. I am now trying to get the hibernate3-maven-plugin to run the hbm2ddl tool to generate a schema.sql file I can use to create the database schema from my annotated domain classes. This is a JPA application that uses Hibernate as the provider. In my persistence.xml file I call out the mysql driver: <property name="hibernate.dialect" value="org.hibernate.dialect.MySQLDialect"/> <property name="hibernate.connection.driver_class" value="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"/> When I run Maven, I see it processing all my classes, but when it goes to output the schema, I get the following error: ERROR org.hibernate.connection.DriverManagerConnectionProvider - JDBC Driver class not found: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver I have the MySQL driver as a dependency of this module. However it seems like the hbm2ddl tool cannot find it. I would have guessed that the Maven plugin would have known to search the local Maven file repository for this driver. What gives? • How to setup firewall to allow internet connection sharing via Wifi USB stick?

  I have a Windows8 computer linked to the internet via an ethernet cable ("Ethernet" network connection). I have attached to it a DLink Wifi USB stick, and I'm trying to share the main PC's internet connection with my Android phone via a local wifi network. I am using the following batch file to set up this network: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MyWifiName key=password keyUsage=persistent netsh wlan start hostednetwork After I run this script, I can see a new network connection appear in "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections" named "Local Area Connection *12", and I can see "MyWifiName" on the Android phone. The device name for this connection on the PC is "Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter". I also set up the "Ethernet" connection to share Internet with "Local Area Connection *12". However, the Android phone usually doesn't manage to obtain an IP from the wireless network, and when it does, there still seems to be no connectivity to the internet. When I turn off the Windows Firewall completely, or even just for "Local Area Connection *12", the Android connection is perfect. My questions are: How should I set up the Windows firewall to allow the phone to connect properly? Is there a specific rule I need to add to the Windows firewall advanced settings? [Note: the above method worked great in Windows 7, without any specific tinkering with the firewall]. Is it safe to turn off the firewall specifically for the "Local Area Connection *12" (the wifi connection) if the main Ethernet connection is still protected by the firewall? Thanks in advance.

• Ubuntu 13.10 AMD/ATI proprietary driver slow boot time, black screen after logging in and lengthy login/logout delays

  Ubuntu 13.10 is causing me major headaches with my AMD/ATI HD 5770 GPU. Below is a list of problems I am currently encountering. 1) The boot time is extended by at least 25s after installing catalyst 13.4. Using open source radeon drivers, my boot time till the login screen is ~10s. With catalyst 13.4 installed, the boot time increases to ~35s. This was not the case in Ubuntu 13.04, 12.10 or 12.04. I have done the driver installation manually (instructions from wiki.cchtml.com) and using software center and there is no difference. I have not tried the catalyst 13.8 beta driver. 2) After manual installation of catalyst 13.4, I get stuck at a black screen after logging in. I have to purge fglrx to resolve the problem. I tried sudo amdconfig --initial -f but it didn't help. 3) The delay between logging in and unity being displayed is ~10-15s for BOTH open source and proprietary drivers. During the delay, it's just a black screen. Whenever I logout, there is again a ~10-15s delay with the login screen appearing stuck before lightdm allows me to enter my password again. This is ridiculous! Yes, I could stick with open source radeon drivers but I would like to install Steam and play my Valve collection on the machine. Is anybody else encountering similar issues?

• About to smash my keyboard!! Ubuntu 13.1 issues with AMD driver & Audio

  Let me preface with saying that this is my 2nd day on Linux. I really want to make it work but these issues are driving me up the wall! I've done exhaustive google searches but have not been able to figure anything out. I am on Ubuntu 13.10, my graphics card is AMD Radeon HD4200. My sound card is a realtek HDMI. I've tried downloading and installing both drivers but nothing works. Graphics card: When I run the .run file (from http://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.1-legacy-linux-x86.x86_64.zip) I get an error. I check the fglrx-install log and it says this: Check if system has the tools required for installation. fglrx installation requires that the system have kernel headers. /lib/modules/3.11.0-12-generic/build/include/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system. One or more tools required for installation cannot be found on the system. Install the required tools before installing the fglrx driver. Optionally, run the installer with --force option to install without the tools. Forcing install will disable AMD hardware acceleration and may make your system unstable. Not recommended. Audio: Since my first install I've had no audio. I've tried everything outlined in this site: http://itsfoss.com/fix-sound-ubuntu-1304-quick-tip/ to no avail. I've download the linux drivers from Realtek HDMI audio but have had no luck. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

  I totally ruined my Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop x64 installation today. I've never been able to hibernate or suspend (not with my laptop, server or htpc), not even through this guide. So I read a post here on askubuntu.com that said that the proprietary drivers may be in the way for it to work. Therefore I removed my ATI-drivers, rebooted, then tried to hibernate the system. I got some error about "blk_something_something didn't work, resubmitting1". So I turned off the computer and then tried booting up. I see the ubuntu splash but after that I'm greeted with this screen: The upper dot is the mouse pointer since I can move it with the mouse (I have ubuntu set to login automatically). I don't know how this happened. What can I do to fix this? I'm getting seriously irritated over how buggy ubuntu is, why doesn't even suspend/hibernate work (remember that I have 3 different systems where it fails)? So what is the next step? I want to get into cli mode and reinstall the driver but since I'm relatively new to ubuntu I don't know how to get into a terminal without logging in first. And if I press shift during boot I can't get into grub either and try something from there. Please come with all suggestions you can think of! Thank you very much! edit: Can I use ubuntu on a usb to insert the driver I need - if that is the problem?

  Recently I bought an Acer Aspire One 725 Netbook and installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it. I bought it, because it can run HD movies and has Full HD on external VGA port. However, movies from youtube have a really slow framerate. If you open three tabs in Opera (for example g-mail, youtube and askubuntu) it gets really laggy. My suspicion is that the driver for graphic card is missing. When I check the System->Details->Graphics the driver is unknown. • How do I stop video tearing? (Nvidia prop driver, non-compositing window manager)

  I have that problem which seemingly afflicts many using the proprietary Nvidia driver: Video tearing: fine horizontal lines (usually near the top of my display) when there is a lot of panning or action in the video. (Note: switching back to the default nouveau driver is not an option, as its seemingly nonexistent power-management drains my battery several times faster) I've tried Totem, Parole, and VLC, and tearing occurs with all of them. The best result has been to use X11 output in VLC, but there is still tearing with relatively moderate action. Hardware: MacBook Air 3,2 -- which has an Nvidia GeForce 320M. There are two common fixes for tearing with Nvidia prop drivers: Turn off compositing, since Nvidia proprietary drivers don't usually play nice with compositing window managers on Linux (Compiz is an exception I'm aware of). But I use an extremely lightweight window manager (Awesome window manager) which is not even capable of compositing (or any cool effects). I also have this problem in Xfce, where I have compositing disabled. Enabling sync to VBlank. To enable this, I set the option in nvidia-settings and then autostart it as nvidia-settings -l with my other autostart programs. This seems to work, because when I run glxgears, I get: $ glxgears Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate. 303 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.500 FPS 300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.992 FPS And when I check the refresh rate using nvidia-settings: $ nvidia-settings -q RefreshRate Attribute 'RefreshRate' (wampum:0.0; display device: DFP-2): 60.00 Hz. All this suggests sync to VBlank is enabled. As I understand it, this is precisely designed to stop tearing, and a lot of people's problem is even getting something like glxgears to output the correct info. • Deactivated wifi drivers, now they won't activate again on a Dell Mini 10v?

  I have ubuntu 13.04. In the software and update menu, under additional drivers, Were it says "Broadcom Corporation; BCM4312 802.11b/gLP.PHY" the box labbeled "do not use it ticked" and when i try tick the one that says "Using Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA Wireless drivers....." it wont let me apply changes, it starts doing it then stops and re-ticks the do not use box. Because of this I can not use the wiress driver. Is there another way i can fix this. Or maby restore ubuntu to previous date. I accidentally ticked the do not use box this morning and now can't undo it. I have restarted several times to try apply changes and still no luck

• How to set up the jdbc driver to connect to hsqldb from libreoffice?

  I am trying to "split" a LibreOffice .odb file into a HSQL database and an OpenOffice document containing forms and macros. I am trying to follow the instructions from this thread: Within a few minutes you can convert your embedded HSQLDB to a stand-alone HSQLDB which is just a very fine database engine. 1) Download and extract the current version from http://hsqldb.org/ and point the Java class path in ToolsOptionsJava to the new hsqldb.jar 2) Extract the database folder from your embedded database and rename the files data, properties, script to name.data name.properties, name.script where "name." is an arbitrary name prefix. 3) Connect a Base document to an existing JDBC database such as jdbc:hsqldb:file:/home/chenier/hsqldb/name;default_schema=true;shutdown=true;hsqldb.default_table_type=cached;get_column_name=false (again, "name" refers to your own file name prefix). This local single-user connection gives you much more than the embedded HSQLDB. 4) Copy queries, forms and reports from the old database over to the new one. The wizard presents me with a window expecting two inputs: a "Datasource URL" and a "JDBC driver class". As far as I can tell, the tutorial above only tells me what to put into the Datasource URL. As for the JDBC driver class, I have no idea what to write into this field. I tried the fully-qualified name of the Java class, org.hsqldb.jdbc.JDBCDriver as given in the HSQLDB documentation. When that failed, I tried the physical path /var/lib/hsqldb/lib/hsqldb.jar (although that should have been unnecessary, because first I pointed to this path as described under 1 and then restarted LibreOffice). In both cases, "Test class" failed with the message "The JDBC driver could not be loaded". OpenOffice's documentation doesn't say anything sensible about the field, it was something like "enter the JDBC driver in this box". Any ideas what I should enter there to get the connection working?

• How I can fix the "Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered"?

  I'm using a GeForce GTX 580, with Windows 7 64-bit. The driver version of the GTX is 301.42. The problem happens after a few minutes, when I'm playing specifc games. It won't happen in all games - And I don't have any idea why these games doesn't work. The games that doesn't work: Battlefield 3, Civilization V, Sniper Elite V2. The games that work: Mass Effect 3, Crysis 2, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Skyrim, L.A. Noire. As you can see, it's not a problem of "The games that demand more stop working". I've tryed updating the driver of the graphics-card, the bios of the motherboard, even formated my computer (It was needing it) and instaled every driver in the last version possible. This problem happens since I bought my graphics-card, 6 months ago. After a few minutes, from 10 to 20, the pixels in the monitor become strange, with random colors and effects, like it was broken. Then, everything goes black, and the message appears "Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered". After that, I need to close the game and start again. I am not overclocking, and my temperature never goes higher than 70ºC.

• 85 Hz on old/new driver looks the same like 75 Hz on previous one?

  I have old philips 107T5 CRT and Nvidia graphics card. I used old Nvidia driver (but it wasn't 'legacy' one when I installed it) for few years but recently I decided to install other Linux distribution. I used 75 Hz refresh rate and 1024x768 resolution on my previous distribution. After I installed the new distribution I had to install a Nvidia driver so I downloaded one from the Nvidia site (this time only legacy supported my card so I downloaded legacy and installed it). It wasn't automatically updating xorg.conf but I had my previous xorg.conf copy and I used it. When I run X I could only choose 85 and 75 Hz, 85 was checked as default. And now what shocks me: that default 85 Hz looks identically like 75 Hz on previous driver looked (at least to me). I tried 75 Hz out of curiosity and it's too bright, hurts, etc. But on the previous driver 75 Hz wasn't hurting my eyes. Why is it different? It's the same number after all, so it should always give the same results, right? That's my first question. Second question: Is 85 Hz OK for that monitor model? Would it break it? I tried to find the optimal refresh rate for this model but couldn't find it.

  Im using ubuntu 12.10 and im using the opensource driver which came reloaded with the distro tried to install the proper driver but I failed, so now im using the opensource driver and its okay, but the only problem is I want to use vdpau coz it accelerate the videos on youtube and smplayer and play it with less cpu usage. my question is: is there a way to enable vdpau with the opensource driver or do I have to use the proper driver from nvidia ?

• Kubuntu 12.04 - Touchpad and keyboard stopped working at random

  As in the title, I've got this problem with my Kubuntu 12.04. At first I've thought that the whole system was hung, but it happened again 5 minutes ago and, while the keyboard and the touchpad stopped working, the music was still playing, so I guess that's just an "input" problem, because the system was still working! Any solution? Is there some data that you need to know about my setup? • WIFI looses connection with AR9285 - have to disconnect / connect to regain internet?

  I have a G73JW laptop using Ubuntu 12.04. It has an Atheros AR9285 card. While wifi seems to work fine most of the time, about every hour or two it will loose the connection to the internet. The connection will appear to be connected still to the wireless router, but internet access is gone. Disconnecting and reconnecting to the access point solves the problem, as does disabling and reenabling the adapter via the hardware keyboard shortcut. How might this be solved so the connection is stable and doesn't drop? To build using the WindowsApplicationForDrivers8.1 build tools, either click the Project menu or right-click the solution, and then select "Update VC++ Projects...". Install WindowsApplicationForDrivers8.1 to build using the WindowsApplicationForDrivers8.1 build tools. I have already installed WDK 8.1 .exe andwhen I right click on the solution I cant find any thing that states "Update VC++ Projects" Any suggestions on how I may resolve this issue and build it. ?   I'm working on a Linux kernel module for a 2.6.x kernel and I need to view the assembly output, though it's currently being done as a temporary file an deleted afterwords. I'd like to have the assembly output mixed with my C source file so I can easily trace where my problem lies. This is for an ARMv6 core and apparently objdump doesn't support this architecture.
