• Wacom consumer tablet driver service may crash while opening Bamboo Preferences, often after resuming computer from sleep

  One of the ExpressKeys on my Wacom Bamboo Capture graphics tablet is mapped to Bamboo Preferences, so that I can quickly access the tablet settings and view the battery level (I have the Wireless Accessory Kit installed). However, when I connect the tablet to the computer, in wired or wireless mode, and attempt to open Bamboo Preferences, the Wacom consumer tablet driver service may crash, most often when I try to do so after resuming the computer from sleep. There is usually no direct indication of the crash (although I once did get Tablet Service for consumer driver stopped working and was closed), only that the cursor shows that the system is busy for a split second. When this happens, the pen no longer tracks on the screen when in proximity of the tablet (even though it is detected by the tablet itself); however, touch continues to function correctly. To recover from this condition, I need to restart the tablet driver services. I got tired of having to go through Task Manager to restart the service every time this happens, so I ended up writing the following command script, with a shortcut on the desktop for running it with elevated privileges: net stop TabletServicePen net start TabletServicePen net stop TouchServicePen net start TouchServicePen Is there something I can do to prevent these crashes from happening in the first place, or do I have have to deal with this issue until the driver is updated? Should I buy a dongle with SoftAP or should I buy one with Wifi-Direct ? What is the difference between these 2 concepts ? Or is there any difference between them ? Moreover, what chipset (Realtek, Ralink etc) could provide such a functionality ? Which chipset that has this functionality could work happily in a Debian/Ubuntu 32 bit environment ? • Why does ATI 5570 HD video card driver installation cause Windows 7 To Blue Screen?

  This one is for the hive mind. I have a brand new Dell Optiplex 760 workstation with 4 gigabytes of RAM running Windows 7 Professional (32bit). This is a new box with nothing installed other than what was provided for directly by Dell. I installed a Saphire ATI PCI Express 5570 HD. Upon trying to install the 10.4 Catalyst drivers the system will blue screen. It blue screens during the hardware detection phase of the installation process. I have already performed the following trouble shooting steps: Changed system RAM Installed only 2 gigabytes of RAM Installed different versions of Catalyst drivers (10.4 - 9.12) Tried to install video only component of driver (vs entire Catalyst suite) Made sure Windows 7 was fully updated Flashed mother board BIOS to current version Removed and re-seated video card Contacted ATI Support (We all know how this went......) • Planning home network

  I'm planning to setup my home network from scratch and want to ask professional opinions or tips. My home is connected to Internet with a cable connection (100 Mb/s). The devices I would like to connect are VoIP phone (RJ-45), TV (WiFi/LAN), 3 laptops (WiFi), 2 smartphones (WiFi), an iPad (WiFi), a Kindle (WiFi), a network printer and, probably, a home media storage (WiFi/LAN). As you can see, the most load will be on WiFi connections (probably, even if TV supports WiFi it's better to connect it by LAN?). So, I need help to choose the best router (or combination of routers) to support stable connections for all these devices and minimize the total number of routers/adapters. I like how Cisco/Linksys devices were working for me in the past, so preferably (but not obligatorily) I want to setup network with their solutions. Any thoughts?

• My Macbook Pro wifi intermittently won't turn on sometimes after sleep, does anyone know how to solve this?

  Hello, My current-generation MacBook Pro 15" (10.6.5) intermittently has problems turning the wifi (airport) on. The usual symptom happens when I: Sleep the machine Open from sleep Wifi is off (the airport signal is blank) I click on airport icon-Turn Airport On, but nothing happens. I googled around a bit and found one recommended solution where I delete the "automatic" location and create a new one and enable the wifi, or I delete the "AirPort" from the location and add it back, but neither of these resolve the problem. I also called AppleCare and they had me delete /Library/SystemConfiguration and restart, but that hasn't solved the problem. I have to reboot, which is very painful. Does anyone have any idea of how to solve this?

I have constant wifi signal range problems with some of my devices, but not with others. I guess it has better hardware or uses more power for transmission.   My needs are simple, I think: I have a laptop upstairs with a usb wifi that I use to connect to my neighbor's wifi which I share (with their knowledge). I have a laser printer downstairs that my wife doesn't wants to stay down there (big, bulky and ugly), but that we both need to print stuff off. It has wired networking and I have wired hub and router down there. The usb wifi on the laptop has absolutley the best reception I've ever seen or heard of. I cannot get onto the neighbor's net with the thing downstairs though--sortof in the ground. What do I need downstairs to give printer access to my laptop wirelessly? One thing I can't do in this solution is have a computer on downstairs, so I would think that would eliminate a usb solution.

• Is it possible to update Lenovo T500 hybrid graphics driver?

  Hope someone had the same problem before. My laptop comes with two video "cards". Intel MHD4500 and ATI Radeon HD3650 (mobility). I can switch between them with the "Lenovo Battery Manager" from the taskbar. All good, but Lenovo provides the driver for this. The problem with that driver is they are a bit old. (Both Intel and ATI). For example I doubt I have any gpu accel in flash, and I experience some problem with dual display setup, which the new ATI driver would solve. Basically I want to create a new driver (I read a topic where a guy said its possible... baaack then when I was searching for something else). One needs a special ATI driver creation utility or what... sorry I can't recall the name of it. Thanks in advance. (Ah yes I forgot: The OS is a Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.)

• I need to make Windows 7 STOP disabling the wifi adapter when the wired LAN is connected

  This is a Dell Latitude E6430. There is a setting in the bios to control this behavior and I have DISABLED it but it still happens. I am also running the latest bios. When I plug in a network cable the wifi adapter becomes disabled. I need it to stay enabled. What else could be making this happen? EDIT: The reason I need to do this is because with NETSH WLAN commands you can create a wifi hotspot by sharing the internet connection on the wired adapter and broadcasting a ssid on the virtual wifi nic. I do this all the time but it's not working on this laptop. I'm wondering if it's a network security thing where I am. I'm going to try from my hotel tonight and report back.

  I use Snow Leopard, and I'm used to activate / deactivate WiFi like 20 times per day. The reason is that WiFi stops working properly after a few minutes of use. So every time I try to surf, I must stop/reactivate it first. But now, suddenly I have to enter my user password every time I want to do it. It's so annoying! I had to change our unnamed crappy ADSL router to a crappy Comtrend CT-5361 WiFi router, now every WiFi connection to the domain doesn't work correctly: Joining the domain is impossible (see related question) Logging into the domain takes ages Authentication usually fails Question: How to debug this and pinpoint the exact problem? I have no enough knowledge on either WiFi networks or on Active Directory to know which connections are made at which stages nor how to check what's happening at the wireless level to compare what should happen to what is happening. I'm looking for resources to learn what should be happening and tools to detect what is actually happening (I expect a sniffer should be enough, but if there are better, more specialized tools, that'd be great).

  OK. So, this is exactly the opposite of what everyone asks about in network programming. Usually, people ask how to make a broken socket work. I, on the other hand am looking for the opposite. I currently have sockets working fine, and want them to break to re-create this problem we are seeing. I am not sure how to go about intentionally making the socket fail by having a bad read. The trick is this: The socket needs to be a working, established connection, and then it must fail for whatever reason. I'm writing this in C and the drivers are running on a Linux system. The sockets are handled by a non-IP Level 3 protocol in Linux by a Linux Device Driver. I have full access to all of the code-base, I just need to find a way to tease it out so that it can fail. Any ideas?

• Propietary modules within GPL and BSD kernels

  Since the Linux kernel is GPL and not LGPL I suppose that it is illegal to link proprietary code to it. How does the industry circumvents this? I would expect that the GPL license will force any developer to release under GPL driver and/or kernel module. Maybe I am confused and implementing a new module is not really linking against the kernel code ??? How do companies deal with this? Maybe linking the other way around (from kernel to their binaries)? On the other hand there is the BSD kernel. Where you are free to link protected IP. Can you get a better design implementing your drivers within a BSD kernel? Is there any design restriction when implementing drivers for GPL kernels?

  I retrieve a USB flash drive serial number by means of ioctl HDIO_GET_IDENTITY as described here. Yet, for some flash drives there is no serial (for example my SanDisk Cruzer). Why some drives don not return a serial number? a) HDIO_GET_IDENTITY not implemented in driver ? b) They just don't have one ? c) Other ? (what?) Is there a specification (like IEEE) that describes where and how the serial number is stored inside the flash drive?

• how to get memory dump after blue screen

  I'm getting a lovely BSOD on bootup (STOP: 0x0000007E) from a driver I'm writing, and would like to load up the memory dump for analysis. However, it's not getting dumped anywhere. Everything is setup correctly in the Startup and Recovery settings, but I get no dump file, and nothing in the event log stating a dump has taken place. It looks like a dump is not even occurring... I know the exact line of code causing it (a call to IoAttachDevice()), but am not sure why, and would like to view the DbgPrint output to see where exactly it's failing. Could Windows possibly be crashing before the dumping functionality is set up? If so, how do I get access to the state of the machine when the failure occurs? UPDATE: Other possibly useful information: I'm running Windows XP through VirtualBox on a Linux host.

• Printer Communication Capture

  If I need to post this elsewhere let me know. We have some old software thats being re-written, that uses a printerdriver to a propriatery printer. I need to rewrite the software bypassing the print driver and go directly to the printer. I do have the specs for the printer communication, thats fine, but what Id like to do is monitor the communications to the printer to view its contents (from the existing software that Im re-writing) and compare it to the specs, and what I will be sending it for validation.   I was able to compile my Linux device to a composite gadget.(Serial + Mass Storage) When I plug this device on a Linux PC, The OS was able to detect and use both function. But when I plug it on Windows, it is just detected as a "Multifunction Composite Gadget" and I can't use it as neither a Mass Storage or a Serial Device. How do I go about making this work in Windows. Is making a customized driver really essential for this task? If so, how is this accomplished the least "painful" way?

• Quick CPU ring mode protection question

  Hi, me again :) I am very curious in messing up with HW. But my top level "messing" so far was linked or inline assembler in C program. If my understanding of CPU and ring mode is right, I cannot directly from user mode app access some low level CPU features, like disabling interrupts, or changing protected mode segments, so I must use system calls to do everything I want. But, if I am right, drivers can run in ring mode 0. I actually don´t know much about drivers, but this is what I ask for. I just want to know, is learning how to write your own drivers and than call them the way I should go, to do what I wrote? I know I could write whole new OS (at least to some point), but what I exactly want to do is acessing some low level features of HW from standart windows application. So, is driver the way to go?
