• C# BackgroundWorker skips DoWork and goes straight to RunWorkerCompleted

  I'm new with C# so go easy on me! So far - I have a console app that listens for client connections and replies to the client accordingly. I also have a WPF form with a button and a text box. The button launches some code to connect to the server as a BackgroundWorker, which then waits for a response before appending it to the end of the text box. This works great, once. Sometimes twice. But then it kept crashing - turns out that the DoWork block wasn't being called at all and it was going straight to RunWorkerCompleted. Of course, the .result is blank so trying to convert it to a string fails. Is this a rookie mistake? I have tried searching the internet for various ways of saying the above but haven't come across anything useful... • C# Windows Service

  Scenario I've created a windows service, but whenever I start it, it stops immediately. The service was concieved from a console application that used to subscribe to an event and watch processes on a server. If anything happened to process (i.e. It was killed), then the event would trigger the process to be restarted. The reason I'm telling you this is because the original code used to look like this: Original Console App Code: static void Main(string[] args) { StartProcess sp = new StartProcess(); //Note the readline that means the application sits here waiting for an event! Console.ReadLine(); } Now that this code has been turned into a Windows Service, it is essentially EXACTLY THE SAME. However, the service does not sit there waiting, even with the readline, it just ends..... New Windows Service Code: protected override void OnStart(string[] args) { ProcessMonitor pm = new ProcessMonitor(); Console.ReadLine(); } Thoughts Since the functionality is entirely encapsulated within this single class (It quite literally starts, sets up some events and waits) - How can I get the service to actually sit there and just wait? It seems to be ignoring the readline. However this works perfectly as a console application, it is just far more convenient to have it as a service.

• Do I need to use http redirect code 302 or 307?

  I am working on a CMS that uses a search facility to output a list of content items. You can use this facility as a search engine, but in this instance I am using it to output the current month's Media Releases from an archive of all Media Releases. The default parameters for these "Data Lists" as they are called, don't allow you to specify "current month" or "current year" for publication date - only "last x days" or "from dateA to dateB". The search facility will accept querystring parameters though, so I intend to code around it like this: Page loads How many days into the current month are we? Do we have a query string that asks for a list including this many days? If no, redirect the client back to this page with the appropriate query-string included. If yes, allow the CMS to process the query Now here's the rub. Suppose the spider from your favourite search engine comes along and tries to index your main Media Releases page. If you were to use a 301 redirect to the default query page, the spider would assume the main page was defunct and choose to add the query page to its index instead of the main page. Now I see that 302 and 307 indicate that a page has been moved temporarily; if I do this, are spiders likely to pop the main page into their index like I want them to? Aparently the problem is with the output parameter. I already tried putting p_Detalle OUT VARCHAR2 instead of p_Detalle OUT LIQUIDACION.FILADETALLE%TYPE but it didn't work either I hope my post is understandable.. thanks!!!!!!!!!!

• Populating JavaScript Array from JSP List

  Ok so perhaps someone can help me with a problem I'm trying to solve. Essentially I have a JSP page which gets a list of Country objects (from the method referenceData() from a Spring Portlet SimpleFormController, not entirely relevant but just mentioning in case it is). Each Country object has a Set of province objects and each province and country have a name field: public class Country { private String name; private Set<Province> provinces; //Getters and setters } public class Province { private String name; //Getters and setters } Now I have two drop down menus in my JSP for countries and provinces and I want to filter the provinces by country. I've been following this tutorial/guide to make a chain select in JavaScript. Now I need a dynamic way to create the JavaScript array from my content. And before anyone mentions AJAX this is out of the question since our project uses portlets and we'd like to stay away from using frameworks like DWR or creating a servlet. • NSString sizeWithFont: returning inconsistent results? known bug?

  I'm trying to create a simple custom UIView wich contain a string drawn with a single font, but where the first character is slightly larger. I thought this would be easily implemented with two UILabel:s placed next to eachother. I use NSString sizeWithFont to measure my string to be able to lay it out correctly. But I noticed that the font baseline in the returned rectangle varies with +/- 1 pixel depending on the font size I set.   Basically I do have pretty simple database that I'd like to index with Lucene. Domains are: // Person domain class Person { Set<Pair> keys; } // Pair domain class Pair { KeyItem keyItem; String value; } // KeyItem domain, name is unique field within the DB (!!) class KeyItem{ String name; } I've tens of millions of profiles and hundreds of millions of Pairs, however, since most of KeyItem's "name" fields duplicates, there are only few dozens KeyItem instances. Came up to that structure to save on KeyItem instances. Basically any Profile with any fields could be saved into that structure. Lets say we've profile with properties - name: Andrew Morton - eduction: University of New South Wales, - country: Australia, - occupation: Linux programmer. To store it, we'll have single Profile instance, 4 KeyItem instances: name, education,country and occupation, and 4 Pair instances with values: "Andrew Morton", "University of New South Wales", "Australia" and "Linux Programmer". All other profile will reference (all or some) same instances of KeyItem: name, education, country and occupation. My question is, how to index all of that so I can search for Profile for some particular values of KeyItem::name and Pair::value. Ideally I'd like that kind of query to work: name:Andrew* AND occupation:Linux* Should I create custom Indexer and Searcher? Or I could use standard ones and just map KeyItem and Pair as Lucene components somehow?

  I'm hoping to call a "static" dictionary function using call(). By "static" I mean that the keyword 'dict' is not used in the function's definition. I use this nomenclature in the hopes that the effect of this keyword is to declare a static member function as is possible in java/C++/etc, ie to put the function name in the class namespace but allow it to be called without referencing an object. However this doesn't seem to work. I mean after the refresh the Application is null so he isnt doing anything. The question is why is the data that I put in the treenode earlier isnt being saved? • SqlBulkCopy causes Deadlock on SQL Server 2000.

  I have a customized data import executable in .NET 3.5 which the SqlBulkCopy to basically do faster inserts on large amounts of data. The app basically takes an input file, massages the data and bulk uploads it into a SQL Server 2000. It was written by a consultant who was building it with a SQL 2008 database environment. Would that env difference be causing this? SQL 2000 does have the bcp utility which is what BulkCopy is based on. So, When we ran this, it triggered a Deadlock error. Error details: Transaction (Process ID 58) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction. I've tried numerous ways to try to resolve it. like temporarily setting the connection string variable MultipleActiveResultSets=true, which wasn't ideal, but it still gives a Deadlock error. I also made sure it wasn't a connection time out problem. here's the function.   Hi folks, NOTE: this is very very similar to this SO question, but I need some more help. i'm trying to make the following section in my .config file, but i get an exception when trying to access this section. .config file <configSections> <section name="foos" type="Ackbar.Mvc.Models.Foo.FooCollection, Ackbar.Mvc" requirePermission="false"/> <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler" requirePermission="false" /> </configSections> <foos> <add name="aaa" something="zzz"/> <add name="bbb" something="yyy"/> <add name="ccc" something="xxx"/> </foos> Ok, so this means i need to make two classes classes public class FooCollection : ConfigurationElementCollection { ... with my custom overrides, etc. ... } and public class FooElement : ConfigurationElement { [ConfigurationProperty("Name", IsRequired = true)] public string Name { .. } [ConfigurationProperty("Something ", IsRequired = true)] public string Something { .. } [ConfigurationProperty("IsDefault ", IsRequired = false, DefaultValue = false)] public bool IsDefault { .. } } Kewl.   Hello to everyone. I'm very new to ASP.NET MVC (as well as ASP.NET in general), and going to gain some knowledge for this technology, so I'm sorry I can ask some trivial questions. I have installed ASP.NET MVC 3 RC1 and I'm trying to do the following. Let's consider that I have a model that's completely auto-generated from a table using the "LINQ to SQL Classes" template in VS2010. The template generates 3 files (two .cs files and one .layout file respectively), and the generated partial class is expected to be used as an MVC model. Let's also consider, a single DB column, that's mapped into the model, may look like this: [global::System.Data.Linq.Mapping.ColumnAttribute(Storage = "_Name", DbType = "VarChar(128)")] public string Name { get { return this._Name; } set { if ( (this._Name != value) ) { // ... generated stuff goes here } } } The ASP.NET MVC engine also provides a beautiful declarative way to specify some additional stuff, like RequiredAttribute, DisplayNameAttribute and other nice attributes. But since the mapped model is a purely auto-genereated model, I've realized that I should not change the model manually, and specify the fields like: [Required] [DisplayName("Project name")] [StringLength(128)] [global::System.Data.Linq.Mapping.ColumnAttribute(Storage = "_Name", DbType = "VarChar(128)")] public string Name { ... though this approach works perfectly... until I change the model in the DBML-designer removing the ASP.NET MVC attributes automatically. • Parameterized Queries /Without/ using queries.

  I've got a bit of a poor situation here. I'm stuck working with commerce server, which doesn't do a whole lot of sanitization/parameterization. I'm trying to build up my queries to prevent SQL Injection, however some things like the searches / where clause on the search object need to be built up, and there's no parameterized interface. Basically, I cannot parameterize, however I was hoping to be able to use the same engine to BUILD my query text if possible. Is there a way to do this, aside from writing my own parameterizing engine which will probably still not be as good as parameterized queries? Update: Example The where clause has to be built up as a sql query where clause essentially: CatalogSearch search = /// Create Search object from commerce server search.WhereClause = string.Format("[cy_list_price] > {0} AND [Hide] is not NULL AND [DateOfIntroduction] BETWEEN '{1}' AND '{2}'", 12.99m, DateTime.Now.AddDays(-2), DateTime.Now); *Above Example is how you refine the search, however we've done some testing, this string is NOT SANITIZED. This is where my problem lies, because any of those inputs in the .Format could be user input, and while i can clean up my input from text-boxes easily, I'm going to miss edge cases, it's just the nature of things. I do not have the option here to use a parameterized query because Commerce Server has some insane backwards logic in how it handles the extensible set of fields (schema) & the free-text search words are pre-compiled somewhere. • Reliable strtotime() result for different languages

  There was always a strange bug in Joomla when adding new article with back-end displayed with a language other than English (for me it's Russian). The field "Finish Publishing" started to be current date instead of "Never" equivalent in Russian. For a site in php4 finally found that strtotime function returns different results for arbitrary words. For "Never" it always -1 and joomla relies on this result in the JDate implementation. But in other case it sometimes returns a valid date. For russian translation of Never (???????) it is the case, but also for single "N" it is the case, so if one decided to change the string to some other he or she would face the same issue. • Linq PredicateBuilder with conditional AND, OR and NOT filters.

  We have a project using LINQ to SQL, for which I need to rewrite a couple of search pages to allow the client to select whether they wish to perform an and or an or search. I though about redoing the LINQ queries using PredicateBuilder and have got this working pretty well I think. I effectively have a class containing my predicates, e.g.: internal static Expression<Func<Job, bool>> Description(string term) { return p => p.Description.Contains(term); } To perform the search i'm doing this (some code omitted for brevity): public Expression<Func<Job, bool>> ToLinqExpression() { var predicates = new List<Expression<Func<Job, bool>>>(); // build up predicates here if (SearchType == SearchType.And) { query = PredicateBuilder.True<Job>(); } else { query = PredicateBuilder.False<Job>(); } foreach (var predicate in predicates) { if (SearchType == SearchType.And) { query = query.And(predicate); } else { query = query.Or(predicate); } } return query; } While i'm reasonably happy with this, I have two concerns: The if/else blocks that evaluate a SearchType property feel like they could be a potential code smell. The client is now insisting on being able to perform 'and not' / 'or not' searches. To address point 2, I think I could do this by simply rewriting my expressions, e.g.: internal static Expression<Func<Job, bool>> Description(string term, bool invert) { if (invert) { return p => !p.Description.Contains(term); } else { return p => p.Description.Contains(term); } } However this feels like a bit of a kludge, which usually means there's a better solution out there. Can anyone recommend how this could be improved? I'm aware of dynamic LINQ, but I don't really want to lose LINQ's strong typing.

• Odd behaviour with PHP's in_array function.

  I have a function that checks multiple form items and returns either boolean(true) if the check passed or the name of the check that was run if it didn't pass. I built the function to run multiple checks at once, so it will return an array of these results (one result for each check that was run). When I run the function, I get this array result: Array ( [0] => 1 [1] => password [2] => birthday ) // print_r array(3) { [0]=> bool(true) [1]=> string(8) "password" [2]=> string(8) "birthday" } // var_dump The 'username' check passed and the 'password' and 'birthday' checks both failed. Then I am using simple in_array statements to determine which ones failed, like so: $results = $ani->e->vld->simulate("register.php", $checks); die(var_dump($results)); // Added after to see what array was being returned if (in_array("username", $results)) // do something if (in_array("password", $results)) // do something if (in_array("birthday", $results)) // do something The problem I'm having is that the 'username' line is still executing, even those 'username' is not in the array. It executes all three statements as if they were all true for some reason. Why is this? I thought maybe that the bool(true) was automatically causing the function to return true for every result without checking the rest of the array, but I couldn't find any documentation that would suggest that very odd functionality.
