• Can't login, kde loads, then back to kdm

  Hi @all (K)Ubuntu users, I installed Kubuntu 10.10 after it's realesing. (ordinary I use Ubuntu, but this time I want to try Kubuntu, too) Now I can't login in Kubuntu: When(/if) I login with mine username and password, KDE loads(I mean this splashscreen), but if it's ready nearly, the screen becomes dark and I'm back in the login-manager. I tried many things: With a new user or with installing gdm or install it new (two times!) Thank you for helping PS: Ubuntu works normal Sorry for my bad english ;-) EDIT: The text-console-mode(or however it's named in english) isn't working anytimes, seemes like a graphics bug or something similiar. And there aren't very many (hidden) ".folders", just .kde .config .dbus .fontconfig and some ".files".

  Now that it has been a few weeks since the Summit, I wanted to look back at the location "experiment". Convention Center - It seemed to work well for the conference. There were quite a few areas in the area where you could sit down and get some work down or have a discussion. For the larger welcome reception the first night, I really liked the different areas. • How to Easily Reset a Computer Back to a Clean State Each Time It Boots

  When you’re managing a public computer, you need a special kind of tool. You need a way to reset that computer back to a clean state every time it boots so no one can make any harmful changes. Commercial solutions like Deep Freeze offer this feature, and Microsoft once offered it via its Windows Steady State tool for Windows XP and Vista. However, Windows Steady State has been discontinued and doesn’t work with Windows 7. We’ll be using Reboot Restore Rx for this, as it supports both Windows 7 and Windows 8. Steadier State is another solid option, but it only works in Windows 7, and even then only with Windows 7 Enterprise and Ultimate.

  The title says it all. It's a bit of an eyesore with propriety NVIDIA drivers, so I tried here. I'm pretty sure I reversed all settings, when it did not work for me. But now: sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth Returns error: update-alternatives: error: cannot stat file '/lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth': Too many levels of symbolic links I just wanna revert back to the vanilla 12.04 LTS Plymouth splash. Thanks. Also: sudo gedit /lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth Returns: "The number of followed links is limited and the actual file could not be found within this limit."

  After a busy Fall and Winter post-Oracle OpenWorld 2009 Oracle's Application Strategy Blog is back. More on what we've been up to shortly. Me, I'm blogging here for the first time. After nearly 6 years at Oracle working on the Oracle Fusion Middleware business I've recently joined the Oracle Applications team. For me, what's old is new again. Prior to working on applications infrastructure at Oracle...and at BEA Systems before that...I worked at PeopleSoft in a number of roles spanning Enterprise Performance Management, Supply Chain, Public Sector and Financial Services and more. Some of the acronyms are the same, there are (of course) some new ones too. But what I'm really excited about is the intersection of Enterprise Applications and Applications Infrastructure that's happening right now. "Aligning IT with Business Strategy" has been the buzzphrase for longer than we can all remember---but what I've seen over the past 5 months makes me start to believe that it's finally starting to happen.

  I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 13.10. I wanted to try out Lubuntu, so I installed the package lubuntu-desktop. Everthing worked fine, I can do Lubuntu sessions now, as well as normal Ubuntu sessions with unity. I realized that I liked unity better. Unfortunately, since I installed lubuntu-desktop my login screen and my notifications look different. How can I revert this and get my old Ubuntu look back? I already removed the package lubuntu-desktop, but it did’t help. Also, when I installed it, it came with a lot of packages that weren’t removed when I removed lubuntu-desktop

• Got back Hibernation option, but cannot resume from Hibernate

  In my Ubuntu 12.04, the hibernation option was working well and fine. However, I installed Debian on another partition recently and when I again tried to boot to Ubuntu, I got a message on the boot splash screen saying : The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or press s to skip mounting or M for manual recovery. After logging into Ubuntu, I find that my hibernation option has gone missing. Is there anyway to recover the hibernation option? EDIT: I solved the disk drive problem and I got the hibernation option back. When I did "sudo pm-hibernate", my system went to hibernation. However, when powering on again, it booted up normally and thus there was no effect of hibernation. How can this be rectified? EDIT1: System - Lenovo ideapad s10-2. EDIT2: /etc/fstab

  I'm using 12.04, classic desktop without effects. Once the indicator-applet-complete (right part of the top panel) had disappeared. I found how to fix it with Alt-Win-RightMouseClick on the panel, then "Add to the Panel", where choose "Indicator Applet Complete" to add. Now, the left part of the top panel (Applications Menu) has disappeared! If I do Alt-Win-RightMouseClick on the panel, I can add only individual menu sections like Internet, Office, Settings etc. How to get back the full menu?

• no back light on my acer aspire 5734z

  I installed Ubuntu (12.04) on my acer aspire 5734z and the back light stopped working. I have tried the fix by editing the grub file posted on here a couple of days ago but that hasn't fixed it. I have also looked for hardware drivers but that didn't get me anywhere. When I hook up an external monitor it works fine but i have been unsuccessful getting the laptop display to light up.   The system works and its called Microsoft Connect , who would of thought it :) Following on from my previous blog post MicroSoft – Follow best practices, on the connect item , the followup stated that changes had been made in 2008.  I genuinely thought that a change would take an age to trickle through to the customer.   It was very amusing going to PASS and the MVP summit this year and people coming up to me asking how my baby was. Well thats not so amusing, how they know I‘ve got a baby is. During the last 24hrs of PASS my wife was overdue having our 3rd child, she had gone out and so I was on alert if the phone rang. • Where to draw the line between front end and back end

  I was recently contracted to develop a smarty theme for an automated SOHO phone answering service. The team who had built the backend wouldn't allow me access to any of the back end nor tell me anything about it, their smarty set up, smarty plugins, data base interface api, server set-up, nothing. Nor could I have access to the server nor a beta domain, basically zero co-operation. So I set up a local server with Smarty and built the template based on what I guessed would be their best practice, commented my code like crazy, wrote all the needed javascript, css, and template files. Then I sent them packaged to the backend team and hoped for the best. With half of a project team failing to cooperate or even communicate I am now concerned that they may reply saying that everything is wrong and they may refuse to implement the new front end. I'm curious to know if others encounter this type of situation and what you may have done to protect yourselves.

• Repairing back-facing triangles without user input

  My 3D application works with user-imported 3D models. Frequently, those models have a few vertices facing into the wrong direction. (For example, there is a 3D roof and a few triangles of that roof are facing inside the building). I want to repair those automatically. We can make several assumptions about these 3D models: they are completely closed without holes, and the camera is always on the outside. My idea: Shoot 500 rays from every triangle outwards into all directions. From the back side of the triangle, all rays will hit another part of the model. From the front side, at least one ray will hit nothing. Is there a better algorithm? Are there any papers about something like this?

  I've seen a ton of tutorials on how to move your home directory to a separate partition. I want to do the opposite. I have two HDDs. One /home/ and the other is everything else (both drives have only one partition). I'm selling the computer but want to keep one of the hard drives. So, I'd like to move the home directory and system files back onto a single drive. Which ever way is quickest/easiest (separate partitions or all on one partition). Thank you!

• Bring the Windows 8 'Start Menu' back!

  I've been using the the Windows 8 RTM from MSDN for a week but the more of my normal software I load onto the machine the more awkward it becomes using the new 'Metro' (yes I know that name is now not used) 'Start' screen. Yes, you can oraganise your programs in groups, or you can add them to the Quick Launch bar, or you can create alphabetic folders on the desktop but sorry Microsoft, none of these are as logical as the alphabetic Start menu of previous Windows versions.Fortunately the good people at Stardock have a solution in 'Start8', which brings the Start Menu we know and love back to Windows 8. It's still in Beta and the current one runs out in October. I'm looking forward to the final release and like lots of other users, I'll be happy to pay for this.Lets hope Microsoft either reinstate the Start Menu in the first service pack or gives us a usable alternative. • Second monitor not coming back on after going into hibernate

  10 and a new problem has come up. When I my machine hibernates the second monitor does not come back on. I did not have this problem in 11.04. The main monitor is plugged into a vga port, and the second plugged into a display port then an adapter to vga the system is a Dell Optiplex 790 and the graphics card is (according to lspci) a VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) I am running the classic Gnome desktop though the problem occurs in Unity as well.

• How to safely back up the "Private" folder?

  I have an ecryptfs "Private" folder in my home directory, and it is set up to automatically mount whenever I log in. I want to set up automatic backups to a network drive, but I don't want the contents of Private to be readable on the remote server. My understanding is that the Ubuntu "Backup" utility would run while I'm logged in, so it would see the folder contents without encryption. I'm backing up from a laptop, so it is essentially only on when I am logged in. I know that the Private folder is essentially a mounted filesystem, so it seems like I should be able to backup the encrypted image rather than the cleartext contents. What steps are needed to safely back it up, while maintaining the encryption? Note that I'm already familiar with the backup tools available, this question is about dealing with the ecryptfs folder safely.
