  • Transferring FSMO roles over vpn

    I have a server located at one of our offices which is quite old and is due to be upgraded soon, this server holds the FSMO roles, I have another server in another office, both are DC's in the same domain and both are replicated, both run Server 2003 standard. I need to transfer the FSMO roles from the old server to the the one I have in the other office before I upgrade. Also I am looking at bringing in Exchange 2010 server however I cant install/configure that until I transfer the roles as it needs to be at the same site as the schema master. My question really is as both servers replicate over a vpn, how quickly will the roles transfer and will there be downtime as I need to make sure that while the transfer is running, both servers will service logon's and share files. or would it be better to do it out of hours? many thanks and apologies if I've missed out anything Regards Tom

But when restart the server, all settings are lost.     Quite often, the script I want to execute is not located in my current working directory and I don't really want to leave it. Is it a good practice to run scripts (BASH, Perl etc.) from another directory? Will they usually find all the stuff they need to run properly? If so, what is the best way to run a "distant" script? Is it . /path/to/script or sh /path/to/script and how to use sudo in such cases? This, for example, doesn't work: sudo . /path/to/script

  • cloud/grid computing

    Hi guys. I'm appologizing in advance to the guys who will tell me this isn't a tech/server/IT issue! But I've been beating my head around this for a couple of days now. I'm trying figure out who to talk to, or which company I can approach to try to see if there are Grid/Cloud Computing companies who have programs setup to deal with colleges. I'm dealing with a compsci course, and we're looking at a few projects that would require a great deal of computing/computational resources. But in calling different companies (HP/Rackspace/etc..) I'm either not getting through to the right depts, or to the right people, or the companies just aren't setup for this. There are plenty of companies who have discounts for desktop software/hardware, but who in the biz deals with discounts/offerings for Cloud/Grid Computing solutions??   • IMAP and Folder Subscriptions

    Hey guys I'm trying to figure out how folder subscriptions work with IMAP Clients and, in my case, in an Exchange 2007 environment. I have managed to deduce, I think correctly, that the folder subscription settings for individuals are stored centrally on the mailbox (At least, having configured 2 profiles on thunderbird, on 2 different machines, they subscribe to the exact same folders and dont display the exact same ones). The point of this being that I have had 2 or 3 different people in the past day report to me that they are having problems subscribing to certain folders, and having certain folder subscriptions remembered (particularly sub-folders). This is across both Thunderbird 2 and 3. can anyone suggest anything? Tom

    I'm following this tutorial to setup a Postfix/Dovecot mail server with Postfix Admin as a web front end. As regards directory structure for virtual mail users, the author of the tutorial writes: Virtual mail users are those that do not exist as Unix system users. They thus don't use the standard Unix methods of authentication or mail delivery and don't have home directories. That is how we are managing things here: mail users are defined in the database created by Postfix Admin rather than existing as system users. Mail will be kept in subfolders per domain and account under /var/vmail - e.g. [email protected] will have a mail directory of /var/vmail/example.com/me.     I have installed the AlternaTIFF viewer in IE (both 6 and 7, on separate computers), but based on the results of the test page, it is not being recognized as the default TIFF viewer inside Internet Explorer. It is installed and functioning, just not used by default. Is there any way to force IE to use AlternaTIFF as the default plugin to render TIFF files?

  • Is there an application I can run that will tell me how fast my computer is running?

    At work I log into a virtual Windows machine. I'm told it runs as fast as a PC, but I'm skeptical. Is there an application I can run on the machine that will tell me how faster the machine is actually running? It would be nice if it ran on Windows and on Mac. Updating with more details -- I was asked "why does it matter" -- here's why: It matters because I'm a programmer and I need as much speed (CPU and memory) as possible to do my work. IMO, the virtual machine is noticeably slower than a basic $800 PC would be, but I need a way a proving it. Websites like Bandwidthtest.com can show me my internet speed, so I'm wondering if there's an app that can test my computer's speed.

  • Nginx and automatic updates

    I'm on Ubuntu 12.04.1 with unattended-upgrades configured for automatic security updates, and I installed Nginx by first adding deb http://nginx.org/packages/ubuntu/ lucid nginx deb-src http://nginx.org/packages/ubuntu/ lucid nginx to /etc/apt/sources.list file, just as was suggested by the official wiki, and then by sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nginx which installed Nginx with all the standard modules. But now I think I could make good use of one or two of the Nginx optional modules, like the gzip precompression module or some security-related one. So far, I see two ways of adding an optional module to Nginx, one is compiling and installing from the source code and the other is described in this article. So, which of the ways should I choose so that automatic updates still run for and apply to Nginx and its optional modules? Or should I create a cron job with a command/script specific for Nginx instead of using unattended-upgrades utility? Can I choose between volume updates and security-only updates to be automatically applied to the standard and optional modules? And finally, is there a possibility to automatically update Nginx's modules on the fly (without any connections having been dropped), like the documentation suggests it's possible with sudo kill -USR2 $( cat /run/nginx.pid ) P.S. Actually I'm not certain if unattended-upgrades utility would automatically update the standard modules in the first place, not enough time has passed since Nginx was installed to say for sure.

  • Windows, why 8 GB of RAM feel like a few MB?

    I'm on Windows 7 x64 with 4-core Intel i7 and 8 GB of RAM, but lately it feels like my computer's "RAM" is located solely on the hard drive. Here is what the task manager shows: The total amount of memory used by the processes in the list is just about 1 GB. And what is happening on my computer for a few days now is that one program (Cataloger.exe) is continually processing large quantities of (rather big) files, repeatedly opening and reading them for the purposes of cataloging. But it doesn't grow too much in memory and stays about that size, about 90 MB. However, the amount of data it processes in, say, 30 minutes can be measured in gigabytes. So my guess was that Windows file caching has something to do with it. And after some research on the topic, I came across this program, called RamMap, that displays detailed info on a computer's RAM. Here is the screenshot: So to me it looks like Windows keeps in RAM huge amounts of data that is no longer needed, redirecting any RAM allocation requests to the pagefile on the hard drive. Even when I close Cataloger.exe, the RamMap reports the size of the mapped file as about the same for a long time on. And it's not just this particular program. Earlier I noticed that similar slowdown occurred after some massive file operations with other programs. So it's really not an exception. Whatever it is, it slows down the computer by like 50 times. Opening a new tab in Chrome takes 20-30 seconds, opening a new program can take up to a minute. Due to the slowdown, some programs even crash. So what do you think, is the problem hiding in file caching or somewhere else? How do I solve it?

  • Iptables mark incoming packet - vpn routing

    I have connected my home to my workplace for out of house backup reasons through openvpn. The connection is working nicely. At work I have 5 fixed IP addresses. Now I would like to assign one of these IP addresses to be forwarded to my home machine. I have confirmed packet arrival at my home machine with tcpdump. The problem is that my default route at home is NOT the tun0 (naturally), but eth0 to my own ISP. So I created a separate routing table to route my tun0 packets back to where they belong, but do not how to mark the incoming packet which arrive through tun0 with iptables, so I can drive them back. I do not want any port restrictions, but only what comes from tun0 should leave through tun0 thanks tom

  • Populating a GridView with ImageViews dynamically/programmatically using a ImageAdapter

    Hi folks, this is my first question at stackoverflow, but it's a little tricky already... I try to develop an Android App which allows the user to fetch data from flickr and show it in a gridview (with some nice 3D-Animation). After some adventures i got it almost running, but now I'm stuck. Here's the problem: I got a UI Thread "LoadPhotosTask" which gets the pictures from flickr, just like the open source application photostream. In the method onProgressUpdate(LoadedPhoto... value) of that subclass I call addPhoto(). Until now everythings fine - I got some nice Bitmap and Flickr.photo data with all the information I need. @Override public void onProgressUpdate(LoadedPhoto... value) { addPhoto(value); } On the other hand I have got a GridView. Now I want to fill it with the Photos. It has got an adapter called ImageAdapter (which extends BaseAdapter, see this tutorial). If I use an array inside the ImageAdapter class I can populate the GridView with some sample images. But if I want to populate it at runtime, I don't know what to do. How do I have to set up the getView method in the ImageAdapter? I was trying to fill the array inside the ImageAdapter class with my values in addPhoto, but it doesn't display anything.   • Is there a way to have a working search bar in Explorer with Windows Search Service disabled?

    I had to disable Windows Search Service (turn it off in Windows Features) for the reason that it was constantly using the hard drive in an excessive way (maybe because I've got very large quantities of files on my PC), noticeably slowing down my computer, and the Windows.edb database file grew way too large, about 2.5 GB in size. But the side-effect of it is that now the search bar is gone from any Explorer window and I miss this useful feature. So my question is, is there a way to stop Windows Search Service torturing my hard drive and still being able to search for files and folders directly from Explorer, perhaps using some third-party software?

    My disk space is dwindling by about 2GB a day! But I am still losing the war. Finally, I realised I have a big misunderstanding: julian@server1:~$ sudo du -h / | tail -n 1 16G / All of my files in / only add up to 16 GB. That leaves 110 GB unaccounted for! Clearly I have a misunderstanding: I thought the '/dev/sda4' line represented all the files visible from '/'. What should I be reading to understand where the other storage has gone? More details: I have an Ubuntu 11.10 server, that was set-up by data-center staff. It is running my own code (which is fairly prolific with log files, but otherwise doesn't store much stuff on the drive) duplicity for backups (which tends to store a lot of signature files) various other standard services, like Apache, nagios, etc. They are very lightly used. It has been up for about 4 months without a reboot. I lied about the du output (simplified it for effect). It also complained about not being able to access GVFS and the du processes's own resources.   • Hiding UITabBar when rotating device iPhone

    Has anyone successfully hidden a UITabbar when rotating the device? I have one view in the UItabbar controller that i rotate (So effectively one tab that rotates) When this happens i want the tab bar to disappear... but nothing seems to work! Either the tabbar still remains visible Or it disappears along with the view Or the tabbar disappears and the view no longer rotates!     Hi, I am getting the error; Warning: mysql_real_escape_string() [function.mysql-real-escape-string]: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) Why do I get this error? The mysql_real_escape_string() works on all of my pages apart from one? Is it something to do with MySQL being on a different server to the PHP server - if so, how do I fix it? Thanks Tom

    Hi. Evaluating Tinymce. I've looked at the docs/source/api, and have a question that I thought I'd pose to the stackoverflow group. Has anyone implemented Tinymce, who can tell me it it's possible to setup Tinymce to restrict a user, allowing the user to only "view" a text file, and be able to add additional buttons to the save/cancel row of buttons..
