  • How to find a programmer for my project?

    - by Al
I'm building a web application to generate monthly subscription fees, but I've quickly realised I'm going to need some help with the project to finish it this century. I don't have any money upfront for a freelancer and every website I've found takes bids for project work. The tasks that need doing are flexible too because I can do whatever the other coder doesn't want to. I'm also happy to guide the developer and offer tips for performance/security/etc etc. My question is; how do I go about finding someone to work with on a profit-share basis? I'm sure there are a billion people like me with the "next killer app" but I genuinely believe in it. Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks in advance! EDIT: I guess the trick is to find someone passionate enough about the subject as I am. Where would I find someone? Are there websites that broker profit-share deals on programming work?

  • Testing perceived performance

    - by Josh Kelley
I recently got a shiny new development workstation. The only disadvantage of this is that the desktop apps I'm developing now run very, very fast, and so I fear that parts of the code that would be annoyingly slow on end users' machines will go unnoticed during my testing. Is there a good way to slow down an application for testing? I've tried searching around, but all of the results I've been able to find seem pretty fiddly to set up (e.g., manually setting up a high-priority CPU-bound task on the same CPU core as the target app, or running a background process that rapidly interrupts and resumes the target app), and I don't know if the end result is actually a good representation of running on a slower computer (with its slower CPU, slower RAM, slower disk I/O...). I don't think that this is a job for a profiler; I'm interested in the user's perception of end-to-end performance rather than in where the time goes for particular operations.

  • Integrating Fish eye with Jenkins

    - by ramaperumal
Jenkins is up and running in my organization. In configure tab under Repository browser we have an option called fish eye.If I select fish eye as an repository browser it is asking the fish eye URL (such as http://fisheye6.cenqua.com/browse/ant/)My requirment is I need to fetch the reports such as (we would like to track the SVN to take chain change report, to give statistics on how many check-in happening in each code base, how many cut has been taken from each branches…etc ).We need to achieve all these things in Jenkins itself. For performing such things we need to setup the seperate fish eye server. If that is the case why we have the fish eye option in jenkins. We can perform all these activities in Fisheye instead of Jenkins. Please suggest, Thx Rama

  • Developer Curriculum Vitae - "Experience"

    - by Neil Barnwell
I've been involved in some interviews at work recently, and having seen a few CVs, I've been thinking of my own. I wonder how I might rate my proficiency at the various technologies I've worked with on some sort of simple scale: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert. I've been doing C# for a few years now, but I'd hesitate to call myself "expert" particularly (partly because surely I haven't been doing it long enough, and partly because I can't bring myself to be so bold as to say I'm expert at anything). I think I probably was expert at VB back when I got into programming, but any VB skills I had will have deteriorated by now. Of course I wouldn't even bother listing things on my CV that I'd consider myself to be "beginner" at, I'd just add them to the "other tech" category, but I'd be interested to hear tips on helping me decide.

  • SwingWorker in Java (beginner question)

    - by Malachi
I am relatively new to multi-threading and want to execute a background task using a Swingworker thread - the method that is called does not actually return anything but I would like to be notified when it has completed. The code I have so far doesn't appear to be working: private void crawl(ActionEvent evt) { try { SwingWorker<Void, Void> crawler = new SwingWorker<Void, Void>() { @Override protected Void doInBackground() throws Exception { Discoverer discover = new Discoverer(); discover.crawl(); return null; } @Override protected void done() { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(jfThis, "Finished Crawling", "Success", JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE); } }; crawler.execute(); } catch (Exception ex) { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(this, ex.getMessage(), "Exception", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE); } } Any feedback/advice would be greatly appreciated as multi-threading is a big area of programming that I am weak in.

  • SATA hard disk for laptop on Desktop PC

    - by Lawliet
I know that this forum is for programming-related questions only, but I'm having this dilemma so here I go. Can I connect a laptop SATA hard disk to Desktop PC? Do I have to use some adapters or I can just plug in SATA power connector and SATA data cable like my Desktop hard disk is connected? I noticed that both laptop and desktop SATA disks use same connectors, but I'm afraid that I might fry my laptop hard disk because the SATA connector has both 12V and 5V voltage (given the fact that laptop hard disks has input voltage of 5V) Thanks in advance

  • ASP.NET MVC download image rather than display in browser

    - by RSolberg
    Rather than displaying a PNG in the browser window, I'd like the action result to trigger the file download dialogue box (you know the open, save as, etc). I can get this to work with the code below using an unknown content type, but the user then has to type in .png at the end of the file name. How can I accomplish this behavior without forcing the user to type in the file extension? public ActionResult DownloadAdTemplate(string pathCode) { var imgPath = Server.MapPath(service.GetTemplatePath(pathCode)); return base.File(imgPath, "application/unknown"); }

  • Modifying records in my migration throws an authlogic error

    - by nfm
I'm adding some columns to one of my database tables, and then populating those columns: def self.up add_column :contacts, :business_id, :integer add_column :contacts, :business_type, :string Contact.reset_column_information Contact.all.each do |contact| contact.update_attributes(:business_id => contact.client_id, :business_type => 'Client') end remove_column :contacts, :client_id end The line contact.update_attributes is causing the following Authlogic error: You must activate the Authlogic::Session::Base.controller with a controller object before creating objects I have no idea what is going on here - I'm not using a controller method to modify each row in the table. Nor am I creating new objects. The error doesn't occur if the contacts table is empty. I've had a google and it seems like this error can occur when you run your controller tests, and is fixed by adding before_filter :activate_authlogic to them, but this doesn't seem relevant in my case. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

  • GoTo statements, and alternatives (help me please im new) (VB.net)

    - by qais
Basically I posted a code snippet on a forum asking for help and people pointed out to me that using GoTo statements is very bad programming practise so I'm just wondering, why is it bad? And also what alternative is there to use, like for example in this program ive done for homework the user has to input their date of birth and if the month/date/year are invalid or unrealistic(using if statements checking the integer inputs size, if theres any better way to do this i'd appreciate if you could tell me that also :D) then how would i be able to loop back to ask them again? heres a little extract of my code retryday: Console.WriteLine("Please enter the day you were born : ") day = Console.ReadLine If day > 31 Or day < 1 Then Console.WriteLine("Please enter a valid day") GoTo retryday End If

  • Testing ASP.NET security in Firefox

    - by blahblah
I'm not sure whether this question belongs on StackOverflow or SuperUser, but here goes nothing... I'm trying to test out some basic security problems on my personal ASP.NET website to see exactly how the custom validators, etc. work when tampering with the data. I've been looking at the Firefox extension TamperData which seems to do the trick, but it doesn't feel very professional at all. The issues I'm having with TamperData is that the textbox for the POST data is way too small to hold the ASP.NET view-state, so I have to copy that data into Emacs and then back again to be productive at all. I also don't like that there doesn't seem to be an option to only tamper with data which is from/to localhost. Any ideas on better extensions for the task or better methods to test it?

  • Build Machine Configuration Recommendations?

    - by IPX Ares
We have a new build machine to start using for our programming team. We are still trying to figure out how we want to organize everything to get the best configuration for building EXEs and DLLs. We are using VB6 and VB.Net 2005, and VSS2005. We were thinking of making working folders set for each project, release and support tickets. Does anyone have experience with a similar set up? What were your likes/dislikes? Any recommendations (New VSS IDs, folder configuration, setting working folder, updating/building files)?

  • How to get hudson to display the SCM diff since last build in the individual build page

    - by Steen
I'm not sure it's even possible, but my command line usecase goes something like this: do svn update do a svn log -l {how many times since my last commit - 1} do a `svn diff -rHEAD:{my last commit revision + 1} and try to get an overview of what happened since last time I touched the code. I get a lot of valuable information from this, and would like everybody in my team to get the same feeling of control and overview of the code base. Not everyone in my team is comfortable with the command line but like the hudson interface. So; is there a way to the the commit diff since last build (we do a build per commit) in the individual build page?

  • Ajax, Multiple Attachments and Paperclip question.

    - by dustmoo
Alright everyone this is a bit of a complicated setup so if I need to clarify the question just let me know. I have a model: class IconSet < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :icon_graphics end This Model has many icongraphics: class IconGraphic < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :icon_set has_attached_file :icon has_attached_file :flagged end As you can see, IconGraphic has two attached files, basically two different versions of the icon that I want to load. Now, this setup is working okay if I edit the icongraphic's individually, however, for ease of use, I have all the icon graphics editable under the IconSet. When you edit the icon set the form loads a partial for the icongraphics: <% form_for @icon_set, :html => {:class => 'nice', :multipart => true} do |f| %> <fieldset> <%= f.error_messages %> <p> <%= f.label :name %> <%= f.text_field :name, :class => "text_input" %> </p> <!-- Loaded Partial for icongraphics --> <div id="icon_graphics"> <%= render :partial => 'icon_graphic', :collection => @icon_set.icon_graphics %> </div> <div class="add_link"> <%= link_to_function "Add an Icon" do |page| page.insert_html :bottom, :icon_graphics, :partial => 'icon_graphic', :object => IconGraphic.new end %> </div> <p><%= f.submit "Submit" %></p> </fieldset> <% end %> This is based largely off of Ryan's Complex Forms Railscast. The partial loads the file_field forms: <div class="icon_graphic"> <% fields_for "icon_set[icon_graphic_attributes][]", icon_graphic do |icon_form|-%> <%- if icon_graphic.new_record? -%> <strong>Upload Icon: </strong><%= icon_form.file_field :icon, :index => nil %><br/> <strong>Upload Flagged Icon: </strong><%= icon_form.file_field :flagged, :index => nil %> <%= link_to_function image_tag('remove_16.png'), "this.up('.icon_graphic').remove()"%><br/> <% else -%> <%= image_tag icon_graphic.icon.url %><br/> <strong>Replace <%= icon_graphic.icon_file_name %>: </strong><%= icon_form.file_field :icon, :index => nil %><br /> <% if icon_graphic.flagged_file_name.blank? -%> <strong>Upload Flagged Icon: </strong><%= icon_form.file_field :flagged, :index => nil %> <% else -%> <strong>Replace <%= icon_graphic.flagged_file_name %>: </strong><%= icon_form.file_field :flagged, :index => nil %> <%= icon_form.hidden_field :flagged, :index => nil %> <% end -%> <%= link_to_function image_tag('remove_16.png'), "mark_for_destroy(this, '.icon_graphic')"%><br/> <%= icon_form.hidden_field :id, :index => nil %> <%= icon_form.hidden_field :icon, :index => nil %> <%= icon_form.hidden_field :should_destroy, :index => nil, :class => 'should_destroy' %> <br/><br/> <%- end -%> <% end -%> </div> Now, this is looking fine when I add new icons, and fill both fields. However, if I edit the IconSet after the fact, and perhaps try to replace the icon with a new one, or if I uploaded only one of the set and try to add the second attachment, paperclip doesn't put the attachments with the right IconGraphic Model. It seems that even though I have the IconGraphic ID in each partial, <%= icon_form.hidden_field :id, :index => nil %> it seems that paperclip either creates a new IconGraphic or attaches it to the wrong one. This all happens when you save the IconSet, which is setup to save the IconGraphic attributes. I know this is complicated.. I may just have to go to editing each icon individually, but if anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

  • How can I write a file on an ftps-server with PHP?

    - by Daniel
    Hi, I hope someone here could help me, because I couldn't find any solution with Google. What I have to do is to generate a XML-string (that works) an save that directly into a file on an ftps-server. So far, so good... I used the following code with ftp and it works to, but not with ftps. So I either need another options-configuration for the stream or a different way to solve that task. Here my current code: $host = 'ftp.example.com'; $port = 22; $user = 'xxxxxx'; $pass = 'xxxxxx'; $file = 'test_' . time() . '.txt'; $ftpPath = sprintf('ftp://%s:%s@%s:%d/%s', $user, $pass, $host, $port, $file); $context = stream_context_create(array('ftp' = array('overwrite' = true))); file_put_contents($ftpPath, 'test', 0, $context);

  • Java multi-threading - what is the best way to monitor the activity of a number of threads?

    - by MalcomTucker
I have a number of threads that are performing a long runing task. These threads themselves have child threads that do further subdivisions of work. What is the best way for me to track the following: How many total threads my process has created What the state of each thread currently is What part of my process each thread has currently got to I want to do it in as efficient a way as possible and once threads finish, I don't want any references to them hanging around becasuse I need to be freeing up memory as early as possible. Any advice?

  • ASP.NET MVC Session usage

    - by Ben
Currently I am using ViewData or TempData for object persistance in my ASP.NET MVC application. However in a few cases where I am storing objects into ViewData through my base controller class, I am hitting the database on every request (when ViewData["whatever"] == null). It would be good to persist these into something with a longer lifespan, namely session. Similarly in an order processing pipeline, I don't want things like Order to be saved to the database on creation. I would rather populate the object in memory and then when the order gets to a certain state, save it. So it would seem that session is the best place for this? Or would you recommend that in the case of order, to retrieve the order from the database on each request, rather than using session? Thoughts, suggestions appreciated. Thanks Ben

  • How do you get XML::Pastor to set xsi:type for programmatically generated elements?

    - by Derrick
    I'm learning how to use Perl as an automation test framework tool for a Java web service and running into trouble generating xml requests from the Pastor generated modules. The problem is that when including a type that extends from the required type for an element, the xsi:type is not included in the generated xml string. Say, for example, I want to generate the following xml request from the modules that XML::Pastor generated from my xsd: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> <PromptAnswersRequest xmlns="http://mycompany.com/api"> <Uri>/some/url</Uri> <User ref="1"/> <PromptAnswers> <PromptAnswer xsi:type="textPromptAnswer" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <Prompt ref="2"/> <Children> <PromptAnswer xsi:type="choicePromptAnswer"> <Prompt ref="1"/> <Choice ref="2"/> </PromptAnswer> </Children> <Value>totally</Value> </PromptAnswer> </PromptAnswers> </PromptAnswersRequest> What I'm getting currently is this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> <PromptAnswersRequest xmlns="http://mycompany.com/api"> <Uri>/some/url</Uri> <User ref="1"/> <PromptAnswers> <PromptAnswer> <Prompt ref="2"/> <Children> <PromptAnswer> <Prompt ref="1"/> <Choice ref="2"/> </PromptAnswer> </Children> <Value>totally</Value> </PromptAnswer> </PromptAnswers> </PromptAnswersRequest> Here are some relavent snippets from the xsd: <xs:complexType name="request"> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="Uri" type="xs:anyURI"/> </xs:sequence> </xs:complexType> <xs:complexType name="promptAnswersRequest"> <xs:complexContent> <xs:extension base="api:request"> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="User" type="api:ref"/> <xs:element name="PromptAnswers" type="api:promptAnswerList"/> </xs:sequence> </xs:extension> </xs:complexContent> </xs:complexType> <xs:complexType name="promptAnswerList"> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="PromptAnswer" type="api:promptAnswer" minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded"/> </xs:sequence> </xs:complexType> <xs:complexType name="promptAnswer" abstract="true"> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="Prompt" type="api:ref"/> <xs:element name="Children" type="api:promptAnswerList" minOccurs="0"/> </xs:sequence> </xs:complexType> <xs:complexType name="textPromptAnswer"> <xs:complexContent> <xs:extension base="promptAnswer"> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="Value" type="api:nonEmptyString" minOccurs="0"/> </xs:sequence> </xs:extension> </xs:complexContent> </xs:complexType> And here are relavent parts of the script: my $promptAnswerList = new My::API::Type::promptAnswerList; my @promptAnswers; my $promptAnswerList2 = new My::API::Type::promptAnswerList; my @textPromptAnswerChildren; my $textPromptAnswer = new My::API::Type::textPromptAnswer; my $textPromptAnswerRef = new My::API::Type::ref; $textPromptAnswerRef->ref('2'); $textPromptAnswer->Prompt($textPromptAnswerRef); my $choicePromptAnswer = new My::API::Type::choicePromptAnswer; my $choicePromptAnswerPromptRef = new My::API::Type::ref; my $choicePromptAnswerChoiceRef = new My::API::Type::ref; $choicePromptAnswerPromptRef->ref('1'); $choicePromptAnswerChoiceRef->ref('2'); $choicePromptAnswer->Prompt($choicePromptAnswerPromptRef); $choicePromptAnswer->Choice($choicePromptAnswerChoiceRef); push(@textPromptAnswerChildren, $choicePromptAnswer); $promptAnswerList2->PromptAnswer(@textPromptAnswerChildren); $textPromptAnswer->Children($promptAnswerList2); $textPromptAnswer->Value('totally'); push(@promptAnswers, $pulseTextPromptAnswer); push(@promptAnswers, $textPromptAnswer); I haven't seen this addressed anywhere in the documentation for the XML::Pastor modules, so if anyone can point me at a good reference for its use it would be greatly appreciated. Also, I'm only using XML::Pastor because I don't know of any other modules that can do this, so if any of you know of something either easier to use, or more well maintained, please let me know about that too!

  • "Invalid signature": oAuth provider with Django-piston

    - by Martin Eve
Hi, I'm working with django-piston to attempt to create an API that supports oAuth. I started out using the tutorial at: http://blog.carduner.net/2010/01/26/django-piston-and-oauth/ I added a consumer to piston's admin interface with key and secret both set to "abcd" for test purposes. The urls are successfully wired-up and the oAuth provider is called. However, running my get request token tests with tripit (python get_request_token.py "http://127.0.0.1:8000/api" abcd abcd), I receive the following error: Invalid signature. Expected signature base string: GET&http%3A%2F%2F127.0.0.1%3A8000%2Fapi%2Foauth%2Frequest_token%2F&oauth_consumer_key%3Dabcd%26oauth_nonce%3D0c0bdded5b1afb8eddf94f7ccc672658%26oauth_signature_method%3DHMAC-SHA1%26oauth_timestamp%3D1275135410%26oauth_version%3D1.0 The problem seems to lie inside the _check_signature method of Piston's oauth.py, where valid_sig = signature_method.check_signature(oauth_request, consumer, token, signature) is returning false. I can't, however, work out how to get the signature validated. Any ideas? -----Update----- If I remove the test consumer from piston's backend, the response returned is correctly set to "Invalid consumer", so this lookup appears to be working.

  • How to Create a Generic Method and Create Instance of The Type

    - by DaveDev
Hi Guys I want to create a helper method that I can imagine has a signature similar to this: public static MyHtmlTag GenerateTag<T>(this HtmlHelper htmlHelper, object obj) { // how do I create an instance of MyAnchor? // this returns MyAnchor, which has a MyHtmlTag base } When I invoke the method, I want to specify a type of MyHtmlTag, such as MyAnchor, e.g.: <%= Html.GenerateTag<MyAnchor>(obj) %> or <%= Html.GenerateTag<MySpan>(obj) %> Can someone show me how to create this method? Also, what's involved in creating an instance of the type I specified? Activator.CreateInstance()? Thanks Dave

  • C# / Visual Studio: production and test code placement

    - by Patrick Linskey
Hi, In JavaLand, I'm used to creating projects that contain both production and test code. I like this practice because it simplifies testing of internal code without artificially exposing the internals in a project's published API. So far, in my experiences with C# / Visual Studio / ReSharper / NUnit, I've created separate projects (i.e., separate DLLs) for production and test code. Is this the idiom, or am I off base? If this idiomatically correct, what's the right way to deal with exposing classes and methods for test purposes? Thanks, -Patrick

  • PCAP Web Service Usage Logging for Dummies

    - by nick
I've been assigned the task (for work) of working with PCAP for the first time in my life. I've read through the tutorials and have hacked together a real simple capture program which, it turns out, isn't that hard. However, making use of the data is more difficult. My goal is to log incomming and outgoing web service requests. Are there libraries (C or C++) that stitch together the packets from PCAP that would make reporting on this simple? Baring that is there something short of reading all of the RFC's from soup to nuts that will allow me to have an "ah-ha!" moment (all of the tutorials seem to stop at the raw packet level which isn't useful for me)? It looks like PERL has a library that may do this and I may eventually attempt a reverse engineer from PERL. NOTE BENE: Web Server logs aren't acceptable here as I will be intercepting on a routing device. If I had access to those I'd be done and happy...I don't.

  • Newbie Question: Read and Process a List of Text Files

    - by johnv
I'm completely new to .NET and am trying as a first step to write a text processing program. The task is simple: I have a list of 10,000 text files stored in one folder, and I'm trying to read each one, store it as a string variable, then run it through a series of functions, then save the final output to another folder. So far I can only manage to manually input the file path like this (in VB.NET): Dim tRead As System.IO.StreamReader Public Function ReadFile() As String Dim EntireFile As String tRead = File.OpenText("c:\textexample\00001.txt") EntireFile = tRead.ReadToEnd Return EntireFile End Function Public Function Step1() ..... End Function Public Function Step2() ..... End Function .............. I'm wondering, therefore, if there's a way to automate this process. Perhaps for example store all input file path into a text file then read each entry at a time, then save the final output into the save path, again listed in a text file. Any help is greatly appreciated. ReplyQuote
