• How to recover an interrupted 12.04 upgrade from 11.10?

  Ok, I will get right to the point. I was upgrading ubuntu to 12.04 from 11.10 (x64) and right in the middle of the package installation I had a freeze (not ubuntu's fault) forcing me to do a hard reset of my pc. Now the ubuntu installation is completely broken I can only get access via recovery mode. I already tried "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" and the option to fix broken packages. Nothing changed. So I'm wondering if its possible to fix the broken packages, or maybe to restore before the upgrade? Thank you in advance.

• Trouble with 12.10 lag

  Well basicly lately I have been having lag problems with 12.10. I will post my specs, but before the update to 12.10, it said that I had intel graphics. Now it says I have Gallium. My specs: *Memory: 3.9 GiB *Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5500 @ 2.80GHz × 2 *Graphics: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.2, 128 bits) (used to say intel graphics) *OS Type: 32-bit *Disk: 486.1 GB The output of the command sudo apt-cache check is this: E: Invalid operation check The output of the command sudo lspci -nnk | grep -A5 VGA is this: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2e32] (rev 03) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. • Ubuntu Freezes w/ Proxy

  Ubuntu 11.04 freezes completely after a little while when using a proxy. It's fine when it's got a direct Internet connection, but it completely grinds to a halt after about 10 or 15 minutes of traffic through a proxy. Any ideas? UPDATE: Here's some more information. I have a second-generation MacBook, which has both OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) installed on it. When running through a proxy, Snow Leopard works fine, but Ubuntu freezes frequently. Any suggestions at all? Or, rather, what other kinds of information do you need?

• Ubuntu 12.10 Help! Everything is incredibly slow

  I installed 12.10 from usb onto this machine. Intel celeron 2.00 GHz 496MB RAM I had to modify GNU-Grub to read "nomodeset" or i could not see the GUI. I have an Nvidia graphics card. Takes about 2 minutes to boot. The icons on the left of desktop take about 1 min to slowly open their menu. Have a network connection but mozilla is 404 and i cannot update. Where can i find a blow by blow explanation for troubleshooting and repairing this problem?

  Since Heroku has integrated the piggybank_ssl addon by default, trying: heroku addons:add piggyback_ssl or heroku addons:add ssl:piggyback results in: ! This add-on is now a standard Heroku platform feature. ! Your apps can already use piggyback SSL. But, accessing: mywebsite.herokuapp.com results in: SSL is not enabled mywebsite.herokuapp.com does not have SSL enabled. My production.rb has: config.force_ssl = true What am I missing? Update I have read the page SSL on Heroku, but it's obsolete, they suggest to run: heroku addons:add piggyback_ssl Which is no longer necessary. SOLVED ! I don't change anything, and now it's working. It seems that it was a heroku problem.

• Why is Thunderbird pegging a core at 100%?

  I have experienced 2-3 unexplained lockup over last 10 days. Today, I had a random lockup (no mouse, keyboard response, 100% CPU). But, when I finally switched (Ctrl-Alt-F1) to command line (it took several minutes) it told me that thunderbird-bin had locked a CPU. I ran this to resolve: pidof thunderbird-bin sudo kill #### However, after saving other work, I tried restarting Thunderbird. It went to 90%+ CPU, and within 20 seconds it locked again. Once I have more detail I will raise a bug (on Ubuntu Forums). Does anyone have any other suggestions, advice? UPDATE Thunderbird 13.0.1 is quite stable in safe mode. Still working to resolve ..

• Broadcom 4313 Signal strength very low on an HP Pavilion dv4

  I have a HP pavilion dv4 4141US laptop running fresh ubuntu 11.10. This laptop has a broadcom 4313gn chipset for the network card. The network card is using the brcmsmac driver. Which, I heard else where on askUbuntu that its the best driver to be using for this card. I can connect to my network, however I have extremely low network signal. Right now I am right in front of the router, and I only get 72%. If i go to the room directly behind the router's wall, i get no signal, where as with windows 7 I get a nice 70% percent. UPDATE: I use WEP at home and an open wireless connection at work. Both have same result. Both are completely different routers. Also you G What can i do?

• Why Wikipedia doesn't appear as a referral in Google Analytics' Traffic sources?

  One of my clients has a website and got not spammy backlinks in a Wikipedia article. When I test it for SEO purposes with Google Analytics (from different IPs), apparently there is no referral information. On the Real-Time view my test visit is visible but with There is no data for this view in the referrals subview. And this visits appear as (direct) / (none) on the Traffic sources view. Wikipedia is not hiding in any way its links origin, since it is shown in the server visits log. Is Google ignoring Wikipedia as a referral? Am I missing anything else? Update: Now it works, several days after the link was active. Maybe something is detecting for how long the link was there so that it doesn't work just from the beggining, as a security measure? Many visits are actually not recorded.

• Issues with nVidia GeForce 210 while watching movies

  Ever since 10.04 I have been trying to resolve an issue with my graphics card - nVidia GeForce 210. I'm having issues when I watch movies on 10.10 - they are jumping all the time, even with Compiz disabled and when that is the only thing I am doing. I have tried the solution to How to get NVidia GeForce GT 210 drivers working on Lucid Lynx? but it didn't work. How can I fix this? Here are the steps I took: apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau edit /etc/default/grub to add the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nouveau.modeset=0" sudo update-grub Reboot Download official Linux drivers from nVidia site. sh filename-of-downloaded-driver-package

  I installed Cinnamon on Ubuntu 12.04 using sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install cinnamon Now I am looking for a way to disable the keyboard shortcuts ALTF7 (move window) and ALTF8 (resize windows). I already disabled those key bindings under Keyboard - Shortcuts. This has no effect. I did not find them in gconf-editor under apps -> muffin . Does anybody know how to remove/edit/disable those key bindings ?

This exception support will be comprised of three components: (1) new fixes for Severity 1 production issues, (2) United States Form 1099 2013 year-end updates, and (3) payroll regulatory updates for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for fiscal years ending in 2014.  In addition, the Extended Support period for E-Business Suite Release 12.1 has been extended through December, 2018.   I recently downgraded from 11.10 to 10.04LTS for compatibility and support of specific development tools. The Ubuntu Software center is missing many packages that I had access to in 11.10, most notably LibreOffice. (Also development tools.) Is there a way to update software sources to find the missing packages? (Or are they incompatible with 10.04?) Synaptic does not have libre either. I feel like I am working with a gimped version of USC.

• Unity: Assigning String value in inspector

  I got an issue with Unity I can't seem to comprehend, and it is possibly very simple: I am trying to write a simple piece of code in JavaScript where a button toggles the activation of a shield, by dragging a prefab with Resources.load("ActivateShieldPreFab") and destroying it again (Haven't implemented that yet). I wish to assign this button through the inspector, so I have created a string variable which appears as intended in the inspector. Though it doesn't seem to register the inspector input, even though I changed the value through the inspector. It only provides the error: "Input Key named: is unknown" When the button name is assigned within the code, there is no issues. • HP 655 Notebook (Ubuntu 12.04) wireless internet disabled after running updates

  Today the update-manaeger suggested that I should download some updates. So I did. After the updates were installed I had to reboot the system. After the reboot my notebook doesn't see any wireless networks. I was looking for a long time on the internet for answers but non of them applies to my case. I have the idea, it has got something to do with the kernel I am currently using (Linux 3.2.0-55). Is this one new for Ubuntu 12.04? When I boot my system I can choose to use an older kernel (linux 3.2.0-32). When I use this one the notebook does see the wireless networks. This is my network card according to the command lspci: Ralink corp. RT3290 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe Anyone an idea to fix my problems with wireless internet?

I would like to buy an existing story (it should be dynamic of course — with branching dialogs etc.), or hire someone to write a new one. Please advise, where to go to find such person / service? We're based in Russia, so getting a talented enough native English writer locally is a bit of a problem. Update: To be extra clear: We must get all necessary rights to reuse the story and make a derived work (i.e. the game we're talking about) from it. This is a commercial product. Borrowing someone else's work at random and using it just not going to work.

• How do you select the fastest mirror from the command line?

  I want to update my sources.list file with the fastest server from the command line in a fresh Ubuntu Server install. I know this is trivially easy with the GUI, but there doesn't seem to be a simple way to do it from from the command line? There are two different working answers to this question below: Use apt-get's mirror: method This method asks the Ubuntu server for a list of mirrors near you based on your IP, and selects one of them. The easiest alternative, with the minor downside that sometimes the closest mirror may not be the fastest. Command-line foo using netselect Shows you how to use the netselect tool to find the fastest recently updated servers from you -- network-wise, not geographically. Use sed to replace mirrors in sources.list. The other answers, including the accepted answer, are no longer valid (for Ubuntu 11.04 and newer) because they recommended Debian packages such as netselect-apt and apt-spy which do not work with Ubuntu. • XNA Drag Gestures - fractional delta values

  I have an issue with objects moving roughly twice as far as expected when dragging them. I am comparing my application to the standard TouchGestureSample sample from MSDN. For some reason in my application gesture samples have fractional positions and deltas. Both are using same Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Input.Touch.dll, v4.0.30319. I am running both apps using standard Windows Phone Emulator. I am setting my break point immediately after this line of code in a simple Update method: GestureSample gesture = TouchPanel.ReadGesture(); Typical values in my app: Delta = {X:-13.56522 Y:4.166667} Position = {X:184.6956 Y:417.7083} Typical values in sample app: Delta = {X:7 Y:16} Position = {X:497 Y:244} Have anyone seen this issue?   in advance: my English is not perfect ;) processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz × 2 memory: 3,9 GiB graphics: GeForce GTX 460 Ubuntu 12.04 32-Bit fresh installed (previously 11.10 32-Bit) driver: NVIDIAs accelerated Driver (Version current-updates) probelm: In Ubuntu 12.04 I have problems with the performance of the graphics (games for example: Volley Brwawl, Neverball, Beep and Minecraft), and effects of windows (always at minimize, maximize...) There are laggs at animations, and the laggs in games are extremely annoying. Problems occur only in Ubuntu 12.04, everything was good in 11.10. No Problems with YouTube videos, HD videos. Is there a solution? BBecause I have found nothing here in the Forum and on Google. Or is an update coming soonfor driver or whatever? (This Bug is already registered in Launchpad.) Thank you!

  Is there a possibility to get the type of terminal with a command? If I'm using gnome-terminal the output should be gnome-terminal or something similar. It would be also nice to get the version of the terminal. Update ps -aux | grep `ps -p $$ -o ppid=` will output something like this: user 4239 0.0 0.7 292708 15744 pts/8 Sl 11:39 0:02 xfce4-terminal user 4800 0.0 0.0 6176 820 pts/0 S+ 12:23 0:00 grep --color=auto 4239 This will also work with xterm, but i don't know how to get only the name (xfce4-terminal in this case).
