  • Why doesn't Win Forms application update label immediately?

    - by rosscj2533
I am doing some experimenting with threads, and made a 'control' method to compare against where all the processing happens in the UI thread. It should run a method, which will update a label at the end. This method runs four times, but the labels are not updated until all 4 have completed. I expected one label to get updated about every 2 seconds. Here's the code: private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Stopwatch watch = new Stopwatch(); watch.Start(); UIThreadMethod(lblOne); UIThreadMethod(lblTwo); UIThreadMethod(lblThree); UIThreadMethod(lblFour); watch.Stop(); lblTotal.Text = "Total Time (ms): " + watch.ElapsedMilliseconds.ToString(); } private void UIThreadMethod(Label label) { Stopwatch watch = new Stopwatch(); watch.Start(); for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { Thread.Sleep(200); } watch.Stop(); // this doesn't set text right away label.Text = "Done, Time taken (ms): " + watch.ElapsedMilliseconds; } Maybe I'm just missing something basic, but I'm stuck. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • How to put data from List<string []> to dataGridView

    - by Kirill
Try to put some data from List to dataGridView, but have some problem with it. Currently have method, that return me required List - please see picture below code public List<string[]> ReadFromFileBooks() { List<string> myIdCollection = new List<string>(); List<string[]> resultColl = new List<string[]>(); if (chooise == "all") { if (File.Exists(filePath)) { using (FileStream fs = new FileStream(filePath, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read)) { StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(fs); string[] line = sr.ReadToEnd().Split(new string[] { Environment.NewLine }, StringSplitOptions.RemoveEmptyEntries); foreach (string l in line) { string[] result = l.Split(','); foreach (string element in result) { myIdCollection.Add(element); } resultColl.Add(new string[] { myIdCollection[0], myIdCollection[1], myIdCollection[2], myIdCollection[3] }); myIdCollection.Clear(); } sr.Close(); return resultColl; } } .... this return to me required data in requred form (like list from arrays). After this, try to move it to the dataGridView, that already have 4 columns with names (because i'm sure, that no than 4 colums required) - please see pic below Try to put data in to dataGridView using next code private void radioButtonViewAll_CheckedChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { TxtLibrary myList = new TxtLibrary(filePathBooks); myList.chooise = "all"; //myList.ReadFromFileBooks(); DataTable table = new DataTable(); foreach (var array in myList.ReadFromFileBooks()) { table.Rows.Add(array); } dataGridViewLibrary.DataSource = table; } But as result got error - "required more rows that exist in dataGridVIew", but accordint to what I'm see (pic above) q-ty of rows (4) equal q-ty of arrays element in List (4). Try to check result by putting additional temp variables - but it's ok - please see pic below Where I'm wrong? Maybe i use dataGridView not in correct way?

  • How to catch key press on a form c# .net

    - by flavour404
Hi, I have a parent form that contains a lot of controls. What I am trying to do is filter all of the key presses for that form. The trouble is that if the focus is on one of the controls on the form then the parent form is not getting the key press event, so how do I capture the key down event? Thanks, R.

  • Installer Vs. Desktop application

    - by Ram
hi, I was just wondering why do we need installer programs to create setups? We can create a desktop application which will do registry changes, registration of assembly, creation of config files and all. Why dedicated installers are there? Do they serve any other purpose or task that a desktop application cannot do?

  • How to assign a numbering scheme to TreeNodes based on position

    - by TChristian
I have a TreeView control in a Windows Forms application that is displaying my own subclass of TreeNode. I need to display a number along with each node's text indicating its position in the tree, like 1 for the root, 1.1 for its first child, 1.2 for its second child, etc. I'm using C# with .NET 2.0 The best that I can come up with is, after the tree is built, go to each node, recursively find the parent and append the parent's sibling number to the front of the node's text until you reach the root.

  • Subconic3.0 with winform app

    - by Saif Khan
Can subsonic 3.0 be used with a winform app? Do I need to add any references to the system.web? If it can be done, how can I exclude certain tables in the DB? Can I use the following whih I am using for subsonic 2.0 <providers> <!--<clear/>--> <add name="TEST" type="SubSonic.SqlDataProvider, SubSonic" connectionStringName="myString" includeTableList="CustomerReference" includeProcedureList=""/> </providers>

  • Why can I check some event handlers for null, some not?

    - by Inno
    Hi, I have a ugly piece of code that adds event handlers. The problem is, if the code is called multiple times, the event handlers are called multiple times. To solve the problem, I remove the event handler first and then add it. Now I've seen the following behaviour: Some event handlers can be checked like: if (object.event == null) { // // Code // } others of the form if (object.object.event == null) { // // Code // } I get a message like 'object.object.event' may only occur left of -= or +=. (Since I'm using a german version of visual studio, I don't know the correct translation to english). I have no idea why the behaviour looks this inconsequent so I would be grateful for some information on this. To be more specific: It's user control. if (myControl.Event == null) { // // works // } if (myControl.TreeView.NodeMouseClick == null) { // // doesn't work // }

  • Using anchor property with dynamically added controls

    - by tcube
I'm adding some textboxes to a form dynamically at runtime. Everything works fine i.e. the textboxes are aligned, anchored and automatically resizes until the form is maximized. On maximizing the form, the textboxes are added to the same location while the form was not maximized. This causes a misalignment of the textboxes. How can I ensure that all the textboxes are at the same location and of the same size both while the windowstate is normal as well as maximized? EDIT: Btw I'm using C# EDIT: Would a flowlayoutpanel be useful here?

  • Taking over someone else's code

    - by tom d
I am taking over someone elses code. What are some good ways to learn what that programmer did as quickly as possible? I have been running it, stepping through it and looking at the callstack. What else can I do? Sorry I forgot to mention, but there is little documentation and I have been trying to fix simple problems. Thanks!

  • How to build a Main Menu screen

    - by flow overstack
Good day (and happy New Year), I'm a beginner VB.Net programmer using VS 2008. I'm planning a new winform project whose main form should look more or less like this: MAIN MENU 1. DoSomething1 2. DoSomething2 3. DoSomething3 ... Please choose: [TextBox] The user can either choose from the Main Menu (by clicking an item) or enter the item number in the textbox. For example, if the user clicks DoSomething3 in the Main Menu (or alternatively enters 3 in the textbox), another form will be opened and hide the main form. What would be the best way to implement it? Specifically, I would like to know how I make so that choosing from the menu and entering a number in the textbox fire the same event. Any help or hints will be appreciated.

  • Is there a way to organize a icon collection to allow for easy searching?

    - by John M
Is there any way of organizing a icon collection so that it easier to find needed icons? For example: the program needs a save icon there are 5 icons collections on your HD that have a save icon and there are 5 more collections that don't have a save icon (but you don't know that) do you browse through each icon collection? run a search (assumes files are named consistently)? Would it be ideal to have some sort of organized directory (printable?)?

  • How to get the right row in a sorted DataView?

    - by ZeissS
Hi, I have a DataGrid containing a small table. Until now, I had a double click handler on this grid which iterated over all rows to find the selected one: DataTable table = (DataTable)this.dataGrid.DataSource; int selectedRow = -1; for (int i=0; i<table.Rows.Count; i++) if (this.dataGrid.IsSelected(i)) selectedRow = i; break; } if ( selectedRow != -1 ) { DataRow row = table.Rows[selectedRow]; // More code ... } Problem: When the user clicks on a column header and sort the table, table.Rows does not return the right rows. It still contains the unsorted rows. How can I get the right column?

  • Format TimeSpan in DataGridView column

    - by Dan Neely
I've seen these questions but both involve methods that aren't available in the CellStyle Format value. I only want to show the hours and minutes portion (16:05); not the seconds as well (16:05:13). I tried forcing the seconds value to zero but still got something like 16:05:00. Short of using a kludge like providing a string or a DateTime (and only showing the hour/minutes part) is there any way I can get the formatting to do what I want.

  • New form on a different thread

    - by Dan
So I have a thread in my application, which purpose is to listen to messages from the server and act according to what it recieves. I ran into a problem when I wanted to fire off a message from the server, that when the client app recieves it, the client app would open up a new form. However this new form just freezes instantly. I think what's happening is that the new form is loaded up on the same thread as the thread listening to the server, which of course is busy listening on the stream, in turn blocking the thread. Normally, for my other functions in the clients listening thread, I'd use invokes to update the UI of the main form, so I guess what I'm asking for is if here's a way to invoke a new form on the main form.

  • Multiple selection in a TreeView

    - by Frederick
I am using a Windows Forms TreeView control in my program. I would like to allow the user to select multiple nodes at the same level by dragging their mouse pointer around (also called a "lasso" selection). I don't think a standard TreeView allows that. My question is what would be the best way to achieve this? Do I have to write custom selection behaviour of my own in perhaps a custom or derived control? Where do I start? I don't need a detailed explanation. Just a small nudge in the right direction.
