  • Avoiding DNS timeouts when a dns server fails

    Hi there. We have a small datacenter with about a hundred hosts pointing to 3 internal dns servers (bind 9). Our problem comes when one of the internal dns servers becomes unavailable. At that point all the clients that point to that server start performing very slowly. The problem seems to be that the stock linux resolver doesn't really have the concept of "failing over" to a different dns server. You can adjust the timeout and number of retries it uses, (and set rotate so it will work through the list), but no matter what settings one uses our services perform much more slowly if a primary dns server becomes unavailable. At the moment this is one of the largest sources of service disruptions for us. My ideal answer would be something like "RTFM: tweak /etc/resolv.conf like this...", but if that's an option I haven't seen it. I was wondering how other folks handled this issue? I can see 3 possible types of solutions: Use linux-ha/Pacemaker and failover ips (so the dns IP VIPs are "always" available). Alas, we don't have a good fencing infrastructure, and without fencing pacemaker doesn't work very well (in my experience Pacemaker lowers availability without fencing). Run a local dns server on each node, and have resolv.conf point to localhost. This would work, but it would give us a lot more services to monitor and manage. Run a local cache on each node. Folks seem to consider nscd "broken", but dnrd seems to have the right feature set: it marks dns servers as up or down, and won't use 'down' dns servers. Any-casting seems to work only at the ip routing level, and depends on route updates for server failure. Multi-casting seemed like it would be a perfect answer, but bind does not support broadcasting or multi-casting, and the docs I could find seem to suggest that multicast dns is more aimed at service discovery and auto-configuration rather than regular dns resolving. Am I missing an obvious solution?

  • Cannot access local resource (C drive) on remote desktop

    I've recently upgraded my client PC to Windows 7, and ever since I can't get local resource sharing for remote desktop to work. I'm connecting to a 2003 server which isn't is my current domain. All my optical and virtual drives are being shared, but the C drive stays hidden. I checked the options, and do indicate that I want to share my C drive. Is there any permission I should change for this to work? The server is configured correctly because when connecting from an XP client this problem doesn't occur. I've tried accessing the share directly by opening the \\tsclient\c path, but this doesn't work neither. \\tsclient only shows the other drives. Also copy 'n paste doesn't seem to work neither(tried restarting rdpclip to no avail), getting Cannot copy file File.dat, the device is not connected.

  • Apache2 name based virtual host always redirect 301

    I've got a server (runnging Debian Squeeze) with Apache 2.2, there are 4 site running there. I'm using namebased virtulhosts because I've got a single IP. Initial configuration has been made with Webmin and probably something has been messed up.. firstdomain.com is my default domain and is working correctly, seconddomain.com is another site that is working. Now I want to add lastdomain.tk as a new site, so I've made this config file: root@webamp:/etc/apache2# cat sites-available/lastdomain.tk.conf <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /home/server/Condivisione/RAID/lastdomain.tk ServerName www.alazanes.tk ServerAlias alazanes.tk </VirtualHost> I've added it to enabled-sites and restarted apache. The problem is that if I go to lastdomain.tk (or www.lastdomain.tk) I'm redirected to firstdomain.com with a 301 redirect. Both lastdomain.tk and www.lastdomain.tk are A DNS records pointing to my IP address.     Hello, I have a script where I mount with the command "New-PSDrive" a network drive. Now, since the script is running as a "cronjob" on a server I want to have some error detection. If for any reason the command New-PSDrive fails the script should stop executing and notify that something went wrong. I have the following code: Try { New-PSDrive -Name A -PSProvider FileSystem -Root \\server\share } Catch { ... handle error case ... } ... other code ... For testing reasons I specified a wrong server name and I get the following error "New-PSDrive : Drive root "\wrongserver\share" does not exist or it's not a folder". Which is OK since the server does not exists. But the script does not go into the Catch clause and stop. It happily continues to run and ends up in a mess since no drive is mounted :-) So my question, why? Is there any difference in Exception handling in PowerShell? I should also note that I'm a noob in PowerShell scripting. Bye, Martin

  • Why isn't ICMP routing with iptables nat routing

    I'm using iptables on Ubuntu server to route a public IP to a private IP. I want to nat all traffic, including 80, 443 and ICMP. However, it appears that ICMP isn't routing. I have a steady ping going to the public IP and it never stops, even with NAT pointing to a bogus IP. Here are the rules that I'm using: iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -d 206.72.119.76 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.240.5.5 iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING -s 10.240.5.5 -j SNAT --to-source 206.72.119.76 I tried with rules for ICMP specifically, but no such luck: iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -d 206.72.119.76 - icmp --icmp-type echo-request -j DNAT --to-destination 10.240.5.5 Any ideas?

The problem is that HP doesn't offer Ubuntu Proliant Support Packs for these particular models. Would you upgrade regardless, skipping the PSPs altogether? Are there alternative hardware monitoring tools that would match the functionality of the PSPs? Is there a hack to install the PSP RPMs on an Ubuntu system?

    I set up LDAP access with postfix. ldapsearch -D "cn=postfix,ou=users,ou=system,[domain]" -w postfix -b "ou=users,ou=people,[domain]" -s sub "(&(objectclass=inetOrgPerson)(mail=[mailaddr]))" delivers the correct entry. Why doesn't it work when binding with a postfix DN? I think I set up the LDAP ACL for the postfix user correctly, as the ldapsearch command should prove. What can be the reason for this behaviour?

  • How best to troubleshoot a WIA issue through an IIS7 reverse proxy.

    I've got an Intranet site that uses Windows Authentication and is accessed through an IIS 7 Reverse Proxy. Using FireFox, Safari or Chrome it works fine. I'm prompted for credentials, I supply them and away I go. In IE 7/8 I get prompted for credentials but they're rejected and I eventually get a 401 not authorized error. The application server is configured for Windows Auth only and rejects basic authentication. I would be surprised if the front end proxy would accept Basic Auth so my suspicion is that it's a trust issue with my browser and IE isn't relaying the credentials however our IS Team has IE so locked down I'm unable to alter trust levels or even view the settings. How should I go about troubleshooting this problem? I'm at a loss and they've yet to respond to my support ticket.

  • JSF Portlets in Liferay on JBoss

    I'm currently looking at working with and deploying JSF portlets into Liferay 6.0.5, sitting on JBoss 5.1.0. I ran into a lot of trouble trying to port some JSF-y/Seam-y/EJB-y stuff I had lying around, so I thought I'd start simple and work my way up. I could generate generic portlets using the NetBeans Maven archetype for Liferay portlets absolutely fine, but it's rather irrelevant because I wanted JSF portlets I took an example JSF portlet from http://www.liferay.com/downloads/liferay-portal/community-plugins/-/software_catalog/products/5546866 and attempted to deploy into a clean, vanilla installation of Liferay 6.0.5/JBoss 5.1.0 to no avail. The log messages are reproduced at the end of this. This particular example was actually tested for GlassFish and Tomcat, so it's not particularly helpful considering I'm deplying into JBoss.   • EC2 hosted service multi-tenant dynamic DNS solution

    I want to change the model of my EC2 hosted service to have a separate sub domain for each tenant (ie. .example.com). My primary DNS is now with dnsmadeeasy.com, but their dynamic DNS offering seem pretty weak: it requires the API to use my full dnsmadeeasy.com account credentials, I rather have the API use a limited privilege credential that can only add/remove/modify subdomain records from what I gather it only allows to modify existing records, does not allow me to dynamically add/remove records for new tenant subdomains My question what are my alternatives? Is there something in the dnsmadeeasy API offering I misunderstood and I should just use them? Is there some other similar DNS service that has a DDNS offering that satisfies my requirements? Or should I just bite the bullet and host my own DNS (my fear is not configuration/learning/know how, my fear is reliability).   • Accidentally deleted symlink libc.so.6 in CentOS 6.4. How to get sudo privilege to re-create it?

    I accidentally deleted the symbol link /lib64/libc.so.6 - /lib64/libc-2.12.so with $ sudo rm libc.so.6 Then I can not use anything including ls command. The error appears for any command I type ls: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I've tried $ export LD_PRELOAD=/lib64/libc-2.12.so After this I can use ls and ln ..., but still can not use sudo ln ..., sudo -E ln ..., sudo su or even su. I always get this err sudo: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory or su: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory It seems LD_PRELOAD works only for the current shell session of my account, but not for a new account like root or a new session. It's a remote server so I can not use a live CD. I now have a ssh bash session alive but can not establish new ones. I have sudo privilege, but don't have root password. So currently my problem is I need to run sudo sln -s libc-2.12.so libc.so.6 to re-create the symlink libc.so.6, but I can not run sudo without libc.so.6. How can I fix it? Thanks~

  • Why does the IIS_IUSRS user need read permission on the ApplicationHost.config file in my Exchange 2010 OWA environment?

    Previously I was experiencing issues where users in my Exchange 2010 environment would periodically receive an error stating: The custom error module does not recognize this error. However, following the advice of a thread I read somewhere, I granted the computername\IIS_IUSRS user Read permissions on the ApplicationHost.config file in the OWA environment. After making this change, the problem has not yet resurfaced. However, I'm not satisfied to simply settle for the fix, I'd like to understand why it worked. So can somebody please tell me why does this user need read permissions on this file and why would that have resolved the issue?

  • Oracle 11gR2 exp does not export some tables

    I have an Oracle 11g (11.2.0.1) Database running on Linux (x64). Within the database I have a schema and 33 tables for it. When I log in via sqlplus I can list all the tables via SELECT OBJECT_NAME FROM USER_OBJECTS WHERE OBJECT_TYPE = 'TABLE'; But when I export the Tablespace using exp ... BUFFER=65536 FULL=N COMPRESS=N CONSISTENT=Y TABLESPACES=... FILE=... Then it only exports 24 of the 33 tables. I have tried to export the missing tables via exp ... TABLES=<missing_table> ... But then I get an error: EXP-00011: NPSMIGRO2_CM.DEFAULT_USR_ATTR_VALUES does not exist How can I find out what's wrong here? How can I export all the tables?

    HI, i have a cisco ASA 5510 using ASDM version 6.3 We have a webserver that is been written very specifically and i was given super direct "DO NOT DEVIATE" directions. This server has to get traffic from 3 different PUBLIC ip's that we own. (our isp gave use a block of 12 static addresses) on 4 different ports. there are the directions i was given externalIP1:22 - 172.17.5.50:22 - SSH externalIP1:443 - 172.17.5.50:23040 - SIT externalIP2:443 - 172.17.5.50:33040 - STAGE externalIP3:443 - 172.17.5.50:43040 - PROD My first question is, using ASDM (my contract employer demands i use ASDM over CLI) how do i get three public addresses to work on one interface. We are authenticating on PPPoE. I know create a virtual interface with the static address but when i do i cannot ping the address from another offsite machine. secondly, where would i put the traffic redirect in. would i go ahead and create ACL's or just make NAT routes.     My goDaddy account for hosting and on that host i have multiple domains. goDaddy offers me only one 404 redirect for all of my domains: domain1.com/gadfgsdf (nonexistent link) is redirected to domain1.com domain2.com/gadf (nonexistent link) is redirected to domain1.com domain.com/sagsdg (nonexistent link) is redirected to domain1.com I need for one of my domains to make the redirect on the same domain: domain4.com/gsdhgfhf (nonexistent link) to be redirected to domain4.com I am on Windows and i am using Wordpress on all of my domains. I looked for the web.config file but didn't find it. I new at this and i would really appreciate it if you can explain more detailed. Thanks

  • How to preserve sysprep from changing Default User settings

    I'm having diffculties configuring 20 new Dell Vostro minis here. I set up one of them with my preferred OS, applications and settings, especially the Visual Effects Settings of Windows XP. I set them to best performance and deactivated everything else in the box. I copied this profile to Default User Profile and did sysprep -mini -reseal. After capturing this image and deploying it again, the desktop settings are correct except the visual effects settings. fading and everything else is reenabled for each new user which is created on the system. How do I preserve my settings from being overwritten by sysprep? thanks!
