• Why does max-width behave counter intuitively on columns in a table? [migrated]

  Basically, I have a stretchy table, I want my label column to be fixed width and my data column to be dynamically sized. My inclination would be to set the max-width via CSS on my label column. However, this has the opposite effect. I've created a jsfiddle that replicates this. (Re-size the window to see the left column dynamically sized and the right column fixed size) On my own site, I see the same behavior and it happens in IE and Chrome. If I switch it, and set max-width on the data column, everything behaves as I want, but it feels backwards to me. Am I doing something wrong here?

• Convert a PDF eBook to ePub Format

  Would you like to read a PDF eBook on an eReader or mobile device, but aren’t happy with the performance? Here’s how you can convert your PDFs to the popular ePub format so you can easily read them on any device. PDFs are a popular format for eBooks since they render the same on any device and can preserve the exact layout of the print book.  However, this benefit is their major disadvantage on mobile devices, as you often have to zoom and pan back and forth to see everything on the page.  ePub files, on the other hand, are an increasingly popular option. They can reflow to fill your screen instead of sticking to a strict layout style.  With the free Calibre program, you can quickly convert your PDF eBooks to ePub format. Getting Started Download the Calibre installer (link below) for your operating system, and install as normal.  Calibre works on recent versions of Windows, OS X, and Linux.  The Calibre installer is very streamlined, so the install process was quite quick. Calibre is a great application for organizing your eBooks.  It can automatically sort your books by their metadata, and even display their covers in a Coverflow-style viewer. To add an eBook to your library, simply drag-and-drop the file into the Calibre window, or click Add books at the top.  Here you can choose to add all the books from a folder and more. Calibre will then add the book(s) to your library, import the associated metadata, and organize them in the catalog. Convert your Books Once you’ve imported your books into Calibre, it’s time to convert them to the format you want.  Select the book or books you want to convert, and click Convert E-books.  Select whether you want to convert them individually or bulk convert them. The convertor window has lots of options, so you can get your ePub book exactly like you want.  You can simply click Ok and go with the defaults, or you can tweak the settings. Do note that the conversion will only work successfully with PDFs that contain actual text.  Some PDFs are actually images scanned in from the original books; these will appear just like the PDF after the conversion, and won’t be any easier to read. On the first tab, you’ll notice that Calibri will repopulate most of the metadata fields with info from your PDF.  It will also use the first page of the PDF as the cover.  Edit any of the information that may be incorrect, and add any additional information you want associated with the book. If you want to convert your eBook to a different format other than ePub, Calibri’s got you covered, too.  On the top right, you can choose to output the converted eBook into a many different file formats, including the Kindle-friendly MOBI format. One other important settings page is the Structure Detection tab.  Here you can choose to have it remove headers and footers in the converted book, as well as automatically detect chapter breaks. Click Ok when you’ve finished choosing your settings and Calibre will convert the book.  This may take a few minutes, depending on the size of the PDF.  If the conversion seems to be taking too long, you can click Show job details for more information on the progress.   The conversion usually works good, but we did have one job freeze on us.  When we checked the job details, it indicated that the PDF was copy-protected.  Most PDF eBooks, however, worked fine. Now, back in the main Calibri window, select your book and save it to disk.  You can choose to save only the EPUB format, or you can select Save to disk to save all formats of the book to your computer. You can also view the ePub file directly in Calibri’s built-in eBook viewer.  This is the PDF book we converted, and it looks fairly good in the converted format.  It does have some odd line breaks and some misplaced numbers, but on the whole, the converted book is much easier to read, especially on small mobile devices.   Even images get included inline, so you shouldn’t be missing anything from the original eBook. Conclusion Calibri makes it simple to read your eBooks in any format you need. It is a project that is in constant development, and updates regularly adding better stability and features.  Whether you want to ready your PDF eBooks on a Sony Reader, Kindle, netbook or Smartphone, your books will now be more accessible than ever.  And with thousands of free PDF eBooks out there, you’ll be sure to always have something to read. • Change the Default Font Size in Word

  Are you frustrated by always having to change the font size before you create a document it Word?  Here’s how you can end that frustration and set your favorite default font size for once and for all! Microsoft changed the default font font to 11 point Calibri in Word 2007 after years of 12 point Times New Roman being the default.  Although it can be easily overlooked, there are ways in Word to change the default settings to anything you want.  Whether you want to change your default to 12 point Calibri or to 48 point Comic Sans…here’s how to change your default font settings in Word 2007 and 2010. Changing Default Fonts in Word To change the default font settings, click the small box with an arrow in the right left corner of the Font section of the Home tab in the Ribbon.   In the Font dialog box, choose the default font settings you want.  Notice in the Font box it says “+Body”; this means that the font will be chosen by the document style you choose, and you are only selecting the default font style and size.  So, if your style uses Calibri, then your font will be Calibri at the size and style you chose.  If you’d prefer to choose a specific font to be the default, just select one from the drop-down box and this selection will override the font selection in your document style. Here we left all the default settings, except we selected 12 point font in the Latin text box (this is your standard body text; users of Asian languages such as Chinese may see a box for Asian languages).  When you’ve made your selections, click the “Set as Default” button in the bottom left corner of the dialog. You will be asked to confirm that you want these settings to be made default.  In Word 2010, you will be given the option to set these settings for this document only or for all documents.  Click the bullet beside “All documents based on the Normal.dotm template?”, and then click Ok. In Word 2007, simply click Ok to save these settings as default. Now, whenever you open Word or create a new document, your default font settings should be set exactly to what you want.  And simply repeat these steps to change your default font settings again if you want. Editing your default template file Another way to change your default font settings is to edit your Normal.dotm file.  This file is what Word uses to create new documents; it basically copies the formatting in this document each time you make a new document. To edit your Normal.dotm file, enter the following in the address bar in Explorer or in the Run prompt: %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates This will open your Office Templates folder.  Right-click on the Normal.dotm file, and click Open to edit it.  Note: Do not double-click on the file, as this will only create a new document based on Normal.dotm and any edits you make will not be saved in this file.   Now, change any font settings as you normally would.  Remember: anything you change or enter in this document will appear in any new document you create using Word. If you want to revert to your default settings, simply delete your Normal.dotm file.  Word will recreate it with the standard default settings the next time you open Word. Please Note: Changing your default font size will not change the font size in existing documents, so these will still show the settings you used when these documents were created.  Also, some addins can affect your Normal.dotm template.  If Word does not seem to remember your font settings, try disabling Word addins to see if this helps. Conclusion Sometimes it’s the small things that can be the most frustrating.  Getting your default font settings the way you want is a great way to take away a frustration and make you more productive. • HDFC Bank's Journey to Oracle Private Database Cloud

  One of the key takeaways from a recent post by Sushil Kumar is the importance of business initiative that drives the transformational journey from legacy IT to enterprise private cloud. The journey that leads to a agile, self-service and efficient infrastructure with reduced complexity and enables IT to deliver services more closely aligned with business requirements. Nilanjay Bhattacharjee, AVP, IT of HDFC Bank presented a real-world case study based on one such initiative in his Oracle OpenWorld session titled "HDFC BANK Journey into Oracle Database Cloud with EM 12c DBaaS". The case study highlighted in this session is from HDFC Bank’s Lending Business Segment, which comprises roughly 50% of Bank’s top line. Bank’s Lending Business is always under pressure to launch “New Schemes” to compete and stay ahead in this segment and IT has to keep up with this challenging business requirement. Lending related applications are highly dynamic and go through constant changes and every single and minor change in each related application is required to be thoroughly UAT tested certified before they are certified for production rollout. This leads to a constant pressure in IT for rapid provisioning of UAT databases on an ongoing basis to enable faster time to market. Nilanjay joined Sushil Kumar, VP, Product Strategy, Oracle, during the Enterprise Manager general session at Oracle OpenWorld 2012. Let's watch what Nilanjay had to say about their recent Database cloud deployment. “Agility” in launching new business schemes became the key business driver for private database cloud adoption in the Bank. Nilanjay spent an hour discussing it during his session. Let's look at why Database-as-a-Service(DBaaS) model was need of the hour in this case  - Average 3 days to provision UAT Database for Loan Management Application Silo’ed UAT environment with Average 30% utilization Compliance requirement consume UAT testing resources DBA activities leads to $$ paid to SI for provisioning databases manually Overhead in managing configuration drift between production and test environments Rollout impact/delay on new business initiatives The private database cloud implementation progressed through 4 fundamental phases - Standardization, Consolidation, Automation, Optimization of UAT infrastructure. Project scoping was carried out and end users and stakeholders were engaged early on right from planning phase and including all phases of implementation. Standardization and Consolidation phase involved multiple iterations of planning to first standardize on infrastructure, db versions, patch levels, configuration, IT processes etc and with database level consolidation project onto Exadata platform. It was also decided to have existing AIX UAT DB landscape covered and EM 12c DBaaS solution being platform agnostic supported this model well. Automation and Optimization phase provided the necessary Agility, Self-Service and efficiency and this was made possible via EM 12c DBaaS. EM 12c DBaaS Self-Service/SSA Portal was setup with required zones, quotas, service templates, charge plan defined. There were 2 zones implemented - Exadata zone  primarily for UAT and benchmark testing for databases running on Exadata platform and second zone was for AIX setup to cover other databases those running on AIX. Metering and Chargeback/Showback capabilities provided business and IT the framework for cloud optimization and also visibility into cloud usage. Some of the key Benefits achieved from UAT cloud initiative are - New business initiatives can be easily launched due to rapid provisioning of UAT Databases [ ~3 hours ] Drastically cut down $$ on SI for DBA Activities due to Self-Service Effective usage of infrastructure leading to  better ROI Empowering  consumers to provision database using Self-Service Control on project schedule with DB end date aligned to project plan submitted during provisioning Databases provisioned through Self-Service are monitored in EM and auto configured for Alerts and KPI Regulatory requirement of database does not impact existing project in queue This table below shows typical list of activities and tasks involved when a end user requests for a UAT database. EM 12c DBaaS solution helped reduce UAT database provisioning time from roughly 3 days down to 3 hours and this timing also includes provisioning time for database with production scale data (ranging from 250 G to 2 TB of data) - And it's not just about time to provision,  this initiative has enabled an agile, efficient and transparent UAT environment where end users are empowered with real control of cloud resources and IT's role is shifted as enabler of strategic services instead of being administrator of all user requests. The strong collaboration between IT and business community right from planning to implementation to go-live has played the key role in achieving this common goal of enterprise private cloud. • gparted won't boot from liveCD

  Hello, Fedora 12 2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686 I downloaded the gparted iso and burnt it to a CD. gparted-live-0.5.2-1 This GParted Live was created by: create-gparted-live -l en -b u -e e -d sid -m http://free.nchc.org.tw/debian -s http://free.nchc.org.tw/debian-security -g http://free.nchc.org.tw/drbl-core -n 2.6.32-3 -i 0.5.2-1 The files and folders: isolinux live syslinux COPYING GParted-Live-Version I put the disk in and reboot. Nothing happens. I just get a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner. I then have to switch of the power button to get it to reboot. I have done this a number of time and the results are the same. Can anyone tell me how to boot from the gparted liveCD? Many thanks for any suggestions,

Patterns are not a panacea. I once wrote a Tetris game with about 100 classes that incorporated all the patterns I knew at the time. Why use a simple if/else if you can use a pattern? OO is good, and patterns are even better, right? No, it was a terrible, over-engineered piece of crap. I am quite confused by these comments: I know design patterns help to make code reusable and readable, but when should I use use design patterns and perhaps more importantly, when should I avoid getting carried away with them?

• Is there any way to stop a window's title bar merging with the panel when maximised?

  I'm working on a desktop machine with plenty of screen real-estate, so I don't need my windows' title bars to merge with the global menu bar when the windows are maximised. Moreover, I'm working on a dual-screen set-up, so the fact that a window is maximised doesn't mean that it's the only window visible. Before Unity I'd switch to a maximised window by clicking on its title bar, or close the window, even though it isn't focused, by clicking on its close button; I can no longer do this because the title bar is missing and the global menu bar is empty on that screen. This isn't a huge problem - I can click on some of the window's chrome to focus it - but it's unintuitive and it's forcing me to relearn my mousing behaviour. I'd like to turn-off the merging of title and global menu bars, but how? EDIT: I simply want the title bar of the window NOT to merge with the top panel whenever I maximize a Window. The global menu should stay in the top panel as far as I am concerned. Current it maximizes like this I want it to maximize like this (In that screeny the unmaximized Window has been resized to take rest of the space)

• Workaround to extend limited screen real-estate on Windows?

  I need a means to use a software tool that requires at least 900 pixels of vertical resolution (as in, the "OK" button to save settings won't be reachable on smaller displays) on a laptop/projector with only 768 pixels of vertical resolution for a training session. So far the only workaround that's been suggested is to memorize the number of tab stops to reach the "OK" and "Cancel" buttons. Any suggestions on a better workaround? What I'd like to see is a utility that would let me treat the physical display as a 1024x768 view port into a larger, virtual display area. Does anything like that exist? Anything else that might help?

• Could Ajax + Caching be seen as cloaking?

  I have a website where we use a technique to speed up loading times based in a combination of AJAX + caching. Basically, when we have a section in a page with content which is slow to retrieve, we first look if it's cached. If it is, then we serve the content, if it's not, we serve a placeholder and then make an AJAX call in the client to retrieve the content, wich is now cached for subsequent requests. As a consecuence, sometimes you get the entire page content in the first request, and sometimes you get those placeholders, wich get filled inmediatly with the responses of the AJAX request. • Rhythmbox 2.99.1 crashes when playing any song on Ubuntu 13.10

  Yesterday rhythmbox was running smoothly but today it crashes only a few seconds after I hit the play button, regardless of track. I've tried disabling plugins, re-installing rhythmbox via synaptics, clearing the library and the rhythmdb.xml-file and just adding one album. Still, it crashes. If I run the rhythmbox from the command line i get the following before I have to force quit: :~$ rhythmbox Failed to create secure directory (/run/user/1000/pulse): Permission denied Killed :~$ However, if i run rhythmbox via the command line as superuser it does work. But i get the following errors: sudo rhythmbox (rhythmbox:8335): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to register client: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files (rhythmbox:8335): IBUS-WARNING **: The owner of /home/john/.config/ibus/bus is not root!   I am trying to open an additional mailbox in Outlook 2003 for one of my users. She already has three additional mailboxes in the list (found in the advanced account settings), and these work fine. When I click the "Add..." button, it immediately reports: The name could not be resolved. The action could not be completed. This is before I am prompted for the name. We're using an externally hosted Exchange 2007 server. How do I resolve this?

• Software jobs after dropping out of masters degree

  I am right now doing my masters in EE in the US, and have previously worked for a couple years in the telecom industry back home in India. I came here wanting to transfer to CS, but at my current university, with my GPA, that seems not very possible. I am not very interested in EE, so I am thinking of dropping out of the program. If I could demonstrate my abilities and experience, would software companies be willing to hire me in the US for my previous experience (with a half completed masters degree). Or would lack of the degree be a huge hindrance? Any suggestions? Thanks

Determine if SSRS 2012 is Installed on your SQL Server You may already have SSRS, or you may need to install it. Before doing any installation it makes sense to know where you are now. If you happened to install SQL Server with all features, you have the tools you need. There are two tools you need: SQL Server Data Tools and Reporting Services installed in Native Mode. To find out if SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) is installed, click the Start button, go to All Programs, and expand SQL Server 2012. Look for SQL Server Data Tools   Now, let’s check to see if SQL Server Reporting Services is installed. Click the Start > All Programs > SQL Server 2012 > Configuration Tools > SQL > Server Configuration Manager   Once Configuration Manager is running, select SQL Server Services. Look for SQL Server Reporting Services in the list of services installed. If you have both SQL Server Reporting Services service and SQL Server Developer tools installed, you will not have to install them again. You may have SQL Server installed, but are missing the Data Tools or the SSRS service or both. • Ubuntu Laptop Screen does not turn on after sleep

  I recently put Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop and after fixing the wireless problem I am only stuck on my screen turning back on after sleep. I have had this problem since Ubuntu 7. I tried using Ubuntu way back then and had a whole bunch of issues with the sleep and the wireless(Broadcom 4311). Anyways, I have an ATI Radeon express 200M graphics card (old laptop). When I go to Hardware drivers it doesn't give me any options to use the closed source drivers. Any suggestions on what I should do? I am going to try what is suggested in this thread but I am at work right now. Laptop does not wake up after sleep Thanks in advance for any help.

• Adding Blogger template to predefined list

  I am working on updating a Blogger layout for a friend's website, and haven't had much luck in searching for this. Essentially, I want to create the template and show them before pushing it live. At present, there are lists of sample templates (Simple, Dynamic, etc), and I'd like to add mine as a clickable button for them to preview. When I attempt to import it, it is automatically published as the live template...but I don't want it to be seen before they review it. I want them to be able to switch between the current version and my version to see what is preferred. Is this even possible? It would be extraordinarily straightforward in WordPress, but I've never used blogger before...

  Most attributes in MSAD are single-valued and pose no problem. I am familiar with the dsquery user -samid jdoe | dsmod -webpg "http://some.url/" method. However, some attributes are multi-valued, such as telephone number and webpage. These values can be managed through the Active Directory Users & Computers Microsoft Console (dsa.msc) via the dialogue shown by clicking on the "Other..." button, but I'd really rather script the modifications. It seems to me that dsmod & dsget do not support multi-value retrieval and editing; only the first value of the set seems to be accesible. Am I correct? If I am not correct, I would appreciate a syntax example. If I am correct, would you please recommend an alternative scriptable tool that can handle multi-value attributes? The more "official and supported" the tool, the better.

• What are the most common schools of knowledge prevalent in 'great' programmers?

  I asked this question on StackOverflow but it got shot down fairly quickly. It was suggested that I ask it here, so I've copied it from there. Hope that's ok: The question: I think that the 'great' programmers become so mostly from being exposed to and interested in programming from early ages, as well as huge amounts of dedication. Unfortunately I only discovered programming at a later age, and I sometimes feel frustrated with the difficulties I experience in trying to grok some of the more fundamental concepts the 'greats' seem to take for granted.. So my question is in relationt to that, if a 'great' programmer (i.e. top 10%) had to distill his or her knowledge into a few recommendations / books / concepts / suggestions / lessons, what would they be? What does a programmer who's willing to learn need to do to get on the right track towards becoming great? And to be more specific, I don't mean 'what does that person need to do', because the answer is almost invariably, 'practice!'. What I mean is, what does the programmer need to know?

  Hi, is there an easier way to copy and paste website content in html? Want to copy and look like this. Product Information: Length: S / M / L Material: Polyester and Elasthane Brand: Roxana Exclusive Style: Basque But when i paste it into my content box it looks like this- Product Information Length: S / M / L Material: Polyester and Elasthane Brand: Roxana Exclusive Style: Basque Then i need to edit it in the html editor to rearrange it. Is the some sort of app or plugin that i can get so i can turn the text of the page into html so it looks right straight away when i copy it into my content box? If that makes any sense? • Can a power failure or forceful shutdown damage hardware?

  In an unrelated Internet forum I got into a discussion about hardware damage from forceful shutdowns (holding the power button for 5 seconds) and power failures. I was in the opinion that normal PC hardware does not suffer from this - after all, it's not much different than what they experience under a standard shutdown. But another person thought that it could do physical harm to the hard drive and possibly other components as well. He also said that the journaling features of filesystems are useless in face of power failures and were intended to help mitigate damage from system crashes. Now... I think this is nonsense, but then again I lack the experience and knowledge to say it with certainty. Perhaps someone else is more knowledgeable in this area and can shed light on this burning issue? :)

• Windows activation on a Virtual Machine (Physical->VM)

  I backed up a number of laptops to virtual machines before they are to be re-purposed, in case I need the data at some later time. While the Physical to VM processes worked fine I am encountering issues on some of the VMs. When I boot them I get an error message saying I MUST activate windows in order to login. This is expected because the hardware changed (from physical hardware to virtualized hardware). I click the OK button and expect to be prompted with ways to activate, windows sits there for quite a while then tells me that "Windows has already been activated". I click OK at that message and get take back to the beginning where I am asked to activate Windows. I have done some fairly intensive googling but haven't been able to find a real solution. EDIT: The laptops with the issues are 2 Sony Vaios, I believe that they have the OEM version of the OS originally installed by the factory.

• Visualize flowchart diagram with multiple end symbols

  I am looking for a standardize way to visualize the following hierarchical logic: The state of the thread is represented by the answers to the hierarchical set of question You can read this listing like a flowchart, you iterate over the questions decide, go one step deeper and so on. Therefore I thought the best way to visualize it, using a flowchart. The problem is, in this hierarchical set it is possible to end in more than one state and its totally valid. I have never seen a flowchart where you can enter more than one state. Is it still possible and I am missing the right symbol to present this logic or are flowchart not fitting anyway? What other graphical representation could I use, is there something fitting in UML? A non-deterministic state machine seems not to be intuitive enough, transfering it into a deterministic state machine would result in to many states, and so on.

• Pins on Pinterest link to 404 - yet link is valid

  this is a really strange one. I've set up a bunch of pins on Pinterest linking through to our services which all work fine. Then I decided to do the same on our blog articles (we use Wordpress), yet everytime I click the link (and I've done this on different computers) the link goes to a 404 page on our site. However the link is valid and if you right click the pin and open in new window it opens fine. I have contacted Pinterest who are next to useless. I have also tried different browsers, different computers and different Pinterest accounts. I can't see any weirdness in my htaccess files causing this so I'm a little stumped. Any suggestions?
