  I want to create classes Car, Vehicle, and Airplane with the following properties: Car and Airplane are both subclasses of Vehicle. Car and Airplane both have an initWithString method. The acceptable input strings for Car's and Airplane's initWithString methods do not overlap. Vehicle is "almost abstract", in the sense that any initialized instance should be either a Car or an Airplane. It is possible to pass a string into Vehicle and get back an instance of Car, an instance of Airplane, or nil, depending on the input string. Any particular design pattern I should prefer? In particular for Vehicle's initWithString and/or newVehicleWithString methods.

• Question about a http form GET method, using query arguments

  I am looking at a bug in WebSVN where when I get into a file log and click on compare, it looses the repository name as part of the request. The details are unimportant. However, I've tracked down the bug to a http form that looks like this: <form method="get" action="comp.php?repname=Binaries&amp;" id="compare"> .... <input type="hidden" name="KEY" value="VALUE"> Is this supposed to work? Will both the "repname" argument, specified as part of the URL, and the hidden value be sent? It seems Chrome 4.1 only sends the hidden argument, and removes the repname parameter altogether. Is this correct? I fixed it temporarily, pending more information, by adding another hidden field for repname with the same value, and now everything works, I'm just wondering if Chrome or WebSVN is in fault here.

• Recording object method calls to generate automated test.

  I have an object with large interface and I would like to record all its method calls done during a user session. Ideally this sequence of calls would be available as source code: myobj.MethodA(42); myobj.MethodB("spam", false); ... I would then convert this code to a test case to have a kind of automated smoke/load test. WCF Load Test can do this for WCF services and CodedUI test recorder can do this for UIs. What are my options for a POCO class? I am in position to edit application code and replace the object in question with some recording/forwarding proxy.

• JQuery and WCF - GET Method passes null

  Hello, I have a WCF service that accepts requests from JQuery. Currently, I can access this service. However, the parameter value is always null. • Prefered method for looping sound flash as3

  Hi there, I'm having some issues with looping a sound in flash AS3, in that when I tell the sound to loop I get a slight delay at the end/beginning of the audio. The audio is clipped correctly and will play without a gap on garage band. I know that there are issues with sound in general in flash, bugs with encodings and the inaccuracies with the SOUND_COMPLETE event (And Adobe should be embarrassed with their handling of these issues) I have tried to use the built in loop argument in the play method on the Sound class and also react on the SOUND_COMPLETE event, but both cause a delay. But has anyone come up with a technique for looping a sound without any noticeable gap?

• readobject method throws ClassNotFoundException

  Hi all, I'm trying to pick up Java and wanted to test around with Java's client/server to make the client send a simple object of a self defined class(Message) over to the server. The problem was that I kept getting a ClassNotFoundException on the server side. I think the rest of the codes seem to be alright because other objects such as String can go through without problems. I had two different netbeans projects in different locations for client and server each. Each of them have their own copy of Message class under their respective packages. Message class implements Serializable. On the client side, I attempt to send a Message object through. On the server side, upon calling the readObject method, it seems to be finding Message class from the client's package instead of it's own. printStackTrace showed: "java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: client.Message" on the server side I have not even tried to cast or store the object received yet. Is there something I left out?

RewriteRule ^adm/(.*)$ adm.php?mode=$1 I've used that for the example URL: http://www.domain.com/adm/thismode Now I want to get two methods like: http://www.domain.com/adm/thismode/othermode I've tried this: RewriteRule ^adm/(.*)$/(.*)$ adm.php?mode=$1&othermode=$2 But doesn't seem to work... how do I get it to do that?

• PHP4 No Error When Missing Method is Called

  I have come across an annoying problem while writing some PHP4 code. I renamed the method of a class but I forgot to rename it where it was being called from. The annoying part is it was hard to track down where the problem was because no error was triggered. The script simply aborted leaving the web page partially rendered. Is it normal for this not to trigger an error or is there something wacky going on here? If this is normal is there a way to force this kind of thing to cause an error?

Sorry for the lame example, but hopefully you get the idea. Is there a way to constrain the enum values that PeelFruit will accept? Obvisouly I could check them in the method with a switch or something, but it would be cool if there was a way to do it that is a) a bit more compact, and b) would cause a compile time error, not a run time error. A) In some block/method i want to control concurrent to not greater than 5 B) if there are 5 request in that block , the new coming must wait up to 60 second then throws error C) if there are sleep/waiting request more then 30, the 31th request will be throwed an error How I do this? 2)(Optional Question) from above I have to distribute control logic to all clustered host. I plan to use hazelcast to share the control logic (e.g. current counter) I see they provide BlockingQueue & ExectorService but I have no idea how to use in my case. Please recommend if you have idea.

• iPhone SDK allow touches to affect multiple views

  I have a main view that has has two buttons on it that control methods to display the next image and display the previous image. In this case the 'Image' is a class that inherits from UIImageView and has multiple pictures on it that you can interact with, and I call this class a 'Pane'. The pane itself handles all the user interaction itself while the main view controls the display of next and previous panes with the buttons. Here is my dilemma, because the pane fully covers the main view it wont allow for the user to tap the buttons on the main view! So once a pane pops up you cannot change it via the buttons! Is there a way to allow touches through transparent parts of a view, or if not how in the world do I achieve this?! I cannot pass touchesBegan or any of those methods from the pane to the superview because all of the button touch methods are created in the xib file. I cannot insert the pane under the control panel because then you wouldn't be able to interact with the pane. And as far as I know theres no way to pass touch events to every single pane within the paneHoldingArray that belongs to the main view I cannot add the command buttons inside of the pane because I want to be able to replace the command button's image with a thumbprint render of the next/previous pane. I've been stuck on this for a very long time, please somebody help me out with a fix action or a new way to re-engineer the code so that it will work!

• Watin ContainsText method fails to find text in FireFox

  The ContainsText method finds the text only in specific area in the html but fails to find id in other parts of the page. The text that located under 'div id="content"' can be found But the text in other area of the html is not found (f.e 'form id="aspnetForm"') Browser b = new FireFox("http://localhost:8668/login.aspx"); b.Button("login.login.button")).Click(); bool blah = b.ContainsText("Hello"); I'm using the latest watin release. The issue is reproduced with FF3.0, FF3.5 and FF3.6 In IE it's working fine for the tested text.

• Java Compiler - Load Method

  So I have been working on a java project where the goal is to create a virtual computer. So I am basically done but with one problem. I have created a compiler which translates a txt document with assembly code in it and my compiler has created a new-file with this code written as machine executable ints. But now I need to write a load method that reads these ints and runs the program but I am having difficulty doing this. Any help is much appreciated....also this is not homework if you are thinking this. The project was simply to make a compiler and now I am trying to complete it for my own interest. Thanks. • How to get surrounding method in Java source file for a given line number

  I have a line number of a Java source file and want to get the sourounding method for that line number programatically. I looked into ANTLR which didn't help me much. Janino (http://www.janino.net) seems promising, I would scan and parse (and if necessary compile) the code. Then I could use JDI and ReferenceType.locationsOfLine(int lineNumber) Still I don't know how to use JDI for doing this and didn't find a tutorial that goes anywhere in this direction. Maybe there is some other way that I am completely missing.

• C# extension method doesn't seem to exist

  I can't seem to get the following extension method to be found in another class in the same namespace (MyProject.Util). using System.Collections.Specialized; namespace MyProject.Util { public static class Extensions { public static string Get( this NameValueCollection me, string key, string def ) { return me[key] ?? def; } } } As you can see it's basically another version of foo[bar] ?? baz, but I still don't understand why VS2008 fails to compile telling me that no version of Get takes two arguments. Any ideas?

  I am using javax.swing.SwingWorker for the first time. I want to update a JLabel from the interim result published by the swing worker as follows: publish("Published String"); Now to update the JLabel, I have coded the following: process(List<String> chunks) { if (chunks.size() > 0) { String text = chunks.get(chunks.size() - 1); label.setText(text); } } The above code works but my problem(or to be more specific, my doubt) is as follows: The above swing worker task is an annonymous inner class so it can access label field. But what if I want to make the swing worker class a non-inner class. Should I need to pass label as an argument to the constructor of swing worker class so that the process() method can access. Or Is there any other way? What approach does other developer follow to update UI components from the swing worker class' result when the swing worker class is not an inner class?

Matrix methods (e.g., inversion). Spline approximations. Probability distributions and statistical methods. In this case, "best" is defined as a package with a mature and usable API, solid performance and numerical accuracy. Edit: derick van brought up a good point in that cost is a factor. I am heavily biased in favor of free packages but others may have a different emphasis.

• Best practices for JQuery namespaces + general purpose utility functions

  What are some current "rules of thumb" for implementing JQuery namespaces to host general purpose utility functions? I have a number of JavaScript utility methods scattered in various files that I'd like to consolidate into one (or more) namespaces. What's the best way to do this? I'm currently looking at two different syntaxes, listed in order of preference: //****************************** // JQuery Namespace syntax #1 //****************************** if (typeof(MyNamespace) === "undefined") { MyNamespace = {}; } MyNamespace.SayHello = function () { alert("Hello from MyNamespace!"); } MyNamespace.AddEmUp = function (a, b) { return a + b; } //****************************** // JQuery Namespace syntax #2 //****************************** if (typeof (MyNamespace2) === "undefined") { MyNamespace2 = { SayHello: function () { alert("Hello from MyNamespace2!"); }, AddEmUp: function (a, b) { return a + b; } }; } Syntax #1 is more verbose but it seems like it would be easier to maintain down the road.   Hello, I've got a little problem here. I've got the following rule for one of my fields: StartDate: { required: isDelayed, dateRU: true } isDelayed() returns false, so I guess StartDate field should be optional. However if I check it inside my dateRU method: $.validator.addMethod( "dateRU", function(value, element) { return this.optional(element) || isValidDate($.trim(value)); }, "Date is incorrect" ); this.optional(element) always returns false for StartDate. I can't figure out what's wrong. Any ideas? UPD. Does optional() returns true only if element is not required AND IS EMPTY? 'Cause that may be my problem.

  I have a short question on ruby / rails method naming conventions or good practice. Consider the following methods: # some methods performing some sort of 'action' def action; end def action!; end # some methods checking if performing 'action' is permitted def action?; end def can_action?; end def action_allowed?; end So I wonder, which of the three ampersand-methods would be the "best" way to ask for permissions. I would go with the first one somehow, but in some cases I think this might be confused with meaning has_performed_action?. So the second approach might make that clearer but is also a bit more verbose. The third one is actually just for completeness. I don't really like that one. So are there any commonly agreed-on good practices for that?
