• ARM TechCon 2013: Oracle, ARM expand collaboration on servers, Internet of Things

  Over the years, Oracle has been making big investments in Java for ARM-based devices. This week, Oracle and ARM announced further expanding their collaboration on a number of fronts, from additional hardware platforms, porting layers, and optimized communication protocols, to 64-bit ARMv8 support, and IoT architectures. • HP Compaq 2510p wireless disabled by hardware switch

  I have an HP Compaq 2510p laptop running ubuntu 12.04 LTS. ubuntu reports that wireless is disabled by means of a hardware switch. There is a 'soft-key' button on the laptop to control the physical wireless hardware but this does not respond. There is no other button, slider, (fn)+ combination to control the physical wireless hardware. There is no BIOS function to disable wireless (and on XP - previous OS - wireless functioned fine). mike@ubuntu:~$ rfkill list all 0: brcmwl-0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes 1: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no Running rfkill unblock all doesn't change things and I can see no way to change use from 0: to 1: (if that's even possible - or desirable - in the first place). I have checked for additional drivers and the Broadcom proprietary wireless driver is already installed and has a green light. Essentially, I believe I need to make the HP 'soft-keys' work - or at least the wireless card toggle. Advice gratefully received. Cheers M

• Samba folder is gone

  I seem to have some issues sharing folders from my Ubuntu 12.04 machine to a Win7 machine. After playing around with the settings, I decided to revert to Samba's original setting by reinstalling it: sudo apt-get purge samba sudo rm -rf /etc/samba/ /etc/default/samba sudo apt-get install samba just to be sure I also run: sudo apt-get install samba samba-common system-config-samba winbind Now, I can't find /etc/samba folder any more. Even when I try to share a folder through Nautilus, I get: Samba's testparm returned error 1: Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf rlimit_max: increasing rlimit_max (1024) to minimum Windows limit (16384) params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "/etc/samba/smb.conf": No such file or directory Error loading services. Same when I try to list: xxx@xxx:~$ ll /etc/samba ls: cannot access /etc/samba: No such file or directory Any ideas what I did wrong, or what other package am I missing? cheers

• Random Between: using random with the instance_create function in GML

  Hopefully this should be a simple one; I want to restrict the points that instances enter the screen from so they don't come in at the edges. In Game Maker I'm using the following code instance_create(random(room_width), random(-100) - 50, obj_enemy1); to create the instance off screen (create(x, y, ...)) At the moment I'm just using the room_width to define the max width for the random on x, but ideally I want to find a way of defining a max AND min width for the random. I can't figure out how to restrict the range on the x axis to between say 100 and 350. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers

• ERRNO 5 Input/Output Error

  Going up for my first ubuntu installation and encountered a critical error. Mind that I am installing on my Macbook Pro, and have already removed all other partitions. (I'm installing with a CD) My Ubuntu version is: "ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386" So once the installation gets to something around "Finishing copying files", a great big "[ERRNO5] Input/Output Error" pops up on the screen. Obviously this halts and crashes the whole installation. Now, I've already run a disk check, memtest, and cpu load test, and all came up green. I have also redownloaded ubuntu twice, md5 match both times, and burnt four disks. None got past this error. If anyone could help me out, that would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

• VBoxManage modifyhd --resize doesn't exist?

  I'm trying to increase the size of a VirtualBox Win7 .vdi disk on Ubuntu 10.04 but when I try executing VBoxManage modifyhd /path/disk.vdi --resize 15360 it returns Syntax error: unknown option: --resize. I'm unsure as to why this is happening because I've used it before and it's still listed under valid options for VBoxManage modifyhd in the VirualBox User Manual . • De-share third level .name domain

  Sometime ago I registered a third level .name domain of the type john.doe.name (this is just an example-my domain is not actually john.doe.name). I just realised that I could have registered the entire second level domain doe.name, which would grant me control of the third level one anyway. Since I already registered the third level, doe.name is now "shared". I have 2 questions: 1) How do I check if I am the only one using the shared second level domain? (normal whois lookup doesn't give any result) 2) Can I "de-share" the domain and buy the entire second level domain? Cheers!

• Help to setup networking in Virtualbox Ubuntu Guest from Windows vista Host

  Hi, I am trying to access the MYSQL installed inside the Ubuntu Guest (In VirtualBox) from my Windows vista Host. It always says not able to find the given IP in the network. I have tried ping the ubuntu virtual machine, but it was not working. So i believe root cause for this is, some bridging between Host & Guest is not enabled. Since i am very new to Ubuntu, am not able to troubleshoot this. Can someone help me out? Cheers

• visual basic coach needed [closed]

  0 down vote favorite I am trying to learn visual basic. I used to program in gw-basic and have trouble learning vb.net by reading and googling all the time. It takes so much time to find the answers to my programming problems and even then i do not understand the why it have to be done that way. I have beginners questions like finding childwindows using enumwindow. Then googling for hours and hours i do not seem to grasp it (must be my old age). I would like to get someone i could learn from by asking questions about what i want to program and learn from it. not to just finish the program but to learn and understand it too. Someone who dont find questions stupid to ask as i try to build my understanding of the visual basic environment. I hope to communicate by using skype voice or chat or other direct means when time permits it. Cheers, Danny

• Enabling "AllowDualLinkModes" in xorg.conf

  I'm using a GeForce GT 620 (which is dual-link compatable) and a DVI-I dual-link splitter to try to have a desktop extended onto two monitors. At the moment when I plug in the monitors, only the monitor on the female VGA marked "1" gets a signal, and the other screen gets nothing and only one screen is detected by nvidia-settings. After reading around, I have realised that my graphics card probably comes with dual-link disabled by default, and I can enable it by adding an "AllowDualLinkModes" option to my xorg.conf. This is the current state of my xorg.conf Section "Device" Identifier "Default Device" Option "NoLogo" "True" EndSection Where do I put the line about AllowDualLinkModes? Do I create a new Section? • Second display running off laptop VGA not correctly positioned (offset left and up)

  I have black bars on the right and bottom of my display! I'm running my laptop's VGA output to an recognized as a It is 20", but the assumed 3" difference does not account for the incorrect position. Everything displays fine. It runs high-res video beautifully. But it's 3/4" offset left and an unreasonably annoying 1/4" offset up. I've tried going through the display's annoying & useless menu, but it doesn't have any way to adjust the position. I'm certainly no linux newbie, but on this Ubuntu (Pangolin, BTW) I can't figure out how to make simple positional display changes on Ubuntu. It's not only frustrating, it's a bit humiliating! So. Does anyone know of an app that will allow me to make basic display position alterations? ("App" - annoyingly trendy, but a useful word - no matter how grating.) Thanks, & Cheers, Paz

• New Year's resolution 2012

  Same procedure as every year... Hundreds of thousands of people have their annual new year's resolution to begin the new year. And so am I. My resolution for 2012: Writing more blog articles (again). Actually, it's quite difficult to find to proper time and space to write up an article for any kind of blog, newspaper or magazine. Especially, when you are very busy with daily work and fulfilling customers demands with very tight schedules. • DVI+HDMI out, at startup only HDMI is available

  I have my computer next to my hdtv. The main screen is connected via DVI while the tv is connected via HDMI. If I start the computer without the HDMI plugged in, everything is ok: I see the login screen and sound is output through analog out. But if the HDMI is plugged in before I start the computer, only the tv gets an image (the login screen), the main screen is black or at some times purple, but even after login the main screen is black. Also sound is still output through analog out. Not sure whether it's a hw issue, or an Ubuntu issue, or a combined hardware/Ubuntu compatibility issue (Sandy Bridge). This is my setup: Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot (64bit) ASUS P8H67-M LE Intel Core i3-2100 I don't have any custom video settings, my main screen is recognized properly when HDMI is not plugged in at startup. • How do I let programmers know something useful?

  Quite often I go through pain to discover how to do something useful, in this case how to get PHP running on Google App Engine without the 'resin.jar too big' problem, but I have nowhere to let people know. In this particular case, the web answers were incomplete, outdated or plain wrong. I could create a blog, but it's overkill. I just want let programmers know a quick solution/approach. I'm not sure it's the done thing to ask a question and then answer it. In short, it'd be nice to be able to just dump a sort of combined question/answer/snippet, then let others comment as usual, shoot it down, like it, whatever. How do the rest of you approach this? • Unable to install juju-gui locally?

  I'm attempting to setup juju-gui in a VM running Ubuntu 13.10 x64 Server. I intend to see if it's possible to deploy an openstack "all in one" node, using this method in that particular VM. I've installed and bootstrapped juju in a local environment : $sudo apt-get install juju-core $sudo apt-get install juju-local $juju switch local $sudo juju bootstrap Next I've executed the following : $juju deploy juju-gui $juju expose juju-gui $watch juju status I was expecting to see juju-gui open up some ports and become available via a web-browser but nothing like that happened - why? how do I fix that? I believe I've managed to follow the deployment guides to the letter? Are there any detailed walkthroughs regarding deploying openstack on 13.10, using juju? Cheers :)

• What about SEO in one page website with ajax loaded content?

After the list is loaded if you click on one row for Restaurant details it load via ajax all the Restaurant details. what about SEO in a website structure like this?
