• Need clarification concerning Windows Azure

  I basically need some confirmation and clarification concerning Windows Azure with respect to a Silverlight application using RIA Services. In a normal Silverlight app that uses RIA services you have 2 projects: App App.Web ... where App is the default client-side Silverlight and app.web is the server-side code where your RIA services go. If you create a Windows Azure app and add a WCF Web Services Role, you get: App (Azure project) App.Services (WCF Services project) In App.Services, you add your RIA DomainService(s). You would then add another project to this solution that would be the client-side Silverlight that accesses the RIA Services in the App.Services project. You then can add the entity model to the App.Services or another project that is referenced by App.Services (if that division is required for unit testing etc.) and connect that entity model to either a SQLServer db or a SQLAzure instance. Is this correct? If not, what is the general 'layout' for building an application with the following tiers: UI (Silverlight 4) Services (RIA Services) Entity/Domain (EF 4) Data (SQL Server)

For many years IBM have been pushing for Portlet Containers with the JSR 168 and later the JSR 286 Specification. 2008-2009, IBM the Lotus division introduced the iWidget Specification. Based on my reading, it is a more dynamic and lightweight version of the Portlets, close to Google Gadget. It uses a different paradigm than Porlet while providing the same features. A major differentiator with this kind of client side technologies is that you don’t need a big and costly Portal infrastructure. To not fall in the ‘It depends on needs’ discussions, let consider the following: * New company, no legacy portlet, no portal in place. What are your thoughts on this?

  Goals Create a class that associates a numeric quantity with a unit of measurement. Provide support for simple arithmetic and comparison operations. Implementation An immutable class (Could have been struct but I may try inheritance later) Unit is stored in an enumeration Supported operations: Addition w/ like units Subtraction w/ like units Multiplication by scalar Division by scalar Modulus by scalar Equals() >, >=, <, <=, == IComparable ToString() Implicit cast to Decimal The Source The souce can be downloaded from Github. Notes This class does not support any arithmetic that would modify the unit. This class is not suitable for manipulating currencies. Future Ideas Have a CompositeQuantity class that would allow quantities with unlike units to be combined. Similar currency class with support for allocations/distributions. Provide conversion between units. (Actually I think this would be best placed in an external service. Many situations I deal with require some sort of dynamic conversion ratio.)

• problem using pydoc in python

  I'm using pydoc in python 2.7.3 to generate documentation for a file called PreProcessingAPI.py which contains a class called PreProcessingAPI In PreProcessingAPI.py, I have the following import in the beginning of the file: from __future__ import division from re import * from nltk.stem import porter The problem is, in the documentation generated by pydoc, nltk.stem.porter is shown as a Module. There is also a DATA heading with all sorts of variables I do not know about. Is there a way to avoid these variables and avoid showing nltk.stem.porter in the modules? I'm running the following command to generate documentation python pydoc.py -w PreProcessingAPI.py I've put the file pydoc.py in the directory containing my file.   I was going thru a video (from coursera - by sedgewick) in which he argues that you cannot sustain Moore's law using a quadratic algorithm.He elaborates like this In year 197* you build a computer of power X ,and need to count N objects.This takes M days According to Moore's law,you have a computer of power 2X after 1.5 years.But now you have 2N objects to count. If you use a quadratic algorithm, In year 197*+1.5 ,it takes (4M)/2 = 2M days 4M because the algorithm is quadratic,and division by 2 because of doubling computer power. I find this hard to understand.I tried to work thru this as below To count N objects using comp=X , it takes M days. -> N/X = M After 1.5 yrs ,you need to count 2N objects using comp=2X -> 2N/(2X) -> N/X -> M days where do I go wrong? can someone please help me understand?

• Deterministic Multiplayer RTS game questions?

  I am working on a cross-platform multiplayer RTS game where the different clients and a server(flash and C#), all need to stay deterministically synchronised. To deal with Floatpoint inconsistencies, I've come across this method: http://joshblog.net/2007/01/30/flash-floating-point-number-errors/#comment-49912 which basically truncates off the nondeterministic part: return Math.round(1000 * float) / 1000; Howewer my concern is that every time there is a division, there is further chance of creating additional floatpoint errors, in essence making it worse? . So it occured to me, how about something like this: function floatSafe(number:Number) : Number {return Math.round(float* 1024) / 1024; } ie dividing with only powers of 2 ? What do you think? . Ironically with the above method I got less accurate results: trace( floatSafe(3/5) ) // 0.599609375 where as with the other method(dividing with 1000), or just tracing the raw value I am getting 3/5 = 0.6 or Maybe thats what 3/5 actually is, IE 0.6 cannot really be represented with a floatpoint datatype, and would be more consistent across different platforms?

  In my first iPad Gen1 and iPad Gen2 I received a 10W charger.  When you plugged in your devices to a lower rated source It would display a msg box telling you the device could not charge from that source.It seem now the latest update for the iPad minis permits the larger brother iPad2 to charge from the 5w charger.I will take longer!  However you are no longer stranded by a limited division of which charger can charge the apple devices -  as they all can, just at different rate now.Try it yourself and let me know if you charge the 3 and 4 with the 5w iphone ipod adapters.Peace,Kosher Koder.

  Intuitively, I think open source development should be much more "casual" than industrial development process (like in Microsoft). Because for OSS development: Duty separation is not that strict than in big companies (maybe developers == testers in open source development?) People come in and out of the open source community, much more frequently than in big companies However, above are just my guesses. I really want to know more about the major difference between the open source and industrial development. Is their division of duty totally different (e.g., is there a leader/manager-like role in open source development?)? Maybe it is their communication style that differs a lot? Or their workflow? • Bridge made out of blocks at an angle

  I'm having a bit of trouble with the math behind my project. I want the player to be able to select 2 points (vectors). With these 2 points a floor should be created. When these points are parallel to the x-axis it's easy, just calculate the amount of blocks needed by a simple division, loop through that amount (in x and y) and keep increasing the coordinate by the size of that block. The trouble starts when the 2 vectors aren't parallel to an axis, for example at an angle of 45 degrees. How do I handle the math behind this? If I wasn't completely clear, I made this awesome drawing in paint to demonstrate what I want to achieve. The 2 red dots would be the player selected locations. • Computer Freezes After GRUB

  Ok so I've just built my first computer and have got it running, here are the specs: Asus P8Z68-V PCI-E LX Motherboard, Intel Core i5-2500K, Patriot Memory 8GB (2 x 4GB), Viper Xtreme Series PC3-15000 1866MHz CL9 Division 2 Edition Memory (PXD38G1866ELK), Gigabyte ATI Radeon 6850 820MHz 1GB PCI-E HDMI OC Windforce 2x 500w Ezcool 24pin psu as standard. The only thing I haven't bought new is the hard drive, it's a 250gb that I removed from an Acer Aspire M5100 that I was using till now with no OS Problems. On start up it runs fine but is unresponsive after the GRUB menu disappears to load Ubuntu (Oneric Ocelot). The keyboard lights then turn off and the screen eventually returns that there is no signal. Is there anything that I could be missing from building? (This is my first attempt at building my own PC) Any input would be appreciated, thanks !
