• Assembling a number-crunching computer [closed]

  What is needed to make a GPU fully fed by CPU? Comparing their flops/s is enough? For example, if i could manage to make a very old(pentium-3) CPU with one of Nvidia-Fermi GPU, it would not be able to fed the gpu with data per sec. What is the criteria to fit CPU to GPU exactly when OpenCL or some similar work needed? Of course RAM and BUS will be chosen in a similar way but how exactly? Assume each GPU-core will calculate a sqrt and a division and an adding for 100 times for every itearation. Thanks.

• Which metric/list should be used to evaluate whole software development team?

  Title might be seem vague, so let me tell you a little bit history what i am trying to clarify question. I have been hired as a consultant for a corporate's small developement divison ( The company also owns a couple of software dev. companies) My ex manager runs a BI team, with reportes, analyts and developers. He asked me to evaluate overall design, software developement process and code quality . Here what i found, Lots of copy/paste code everywhere ( no reuse ) Even though they have everything TFS, VS Ultimate etc, No Build process , No Cruise Control.net / team city... No unit tests Web Pages with 3700 lines of code, Lots of huge functions ( which can be divided into smaller one's ) No naming convention both db and c# code No 3r party or open source project No IoC No Seperation Of Concerns No Code Quality Check ( NDepend or FxCope or nothing ) No Code Review No Communication within the team They claim they wrote an application framework ( 6 months 3 persons), but I would hardly call a framework ( of course no unit test, there are some but all commented out). Framework contains 14 projects but there are some projects with 1 file 20 lines of code . Honestly, what people are doing fixing bug all thr day( which will provide more bugs eventually), they are kind of isolated from community, some team members even dont know github or stackoverflow they probably went there with google but they dont know about it. So here is question, Is This list ok ? Or am i being picky? Since I dont have any grudge against them, I just want to be fair, honest and I would like to hear you suggestions, before I would submit this list. • How can I handle parameterized queries in Drupal?

  We have a client who is currently using Lotus Notes/Domino as their content management system and web server. For many reasons, we are recommending they sunset their Notes/Domino implementation and transition onto a more modern platform--such as Drupal. The client has several web applications which would be a natural fit for Drupal. However, I am unsure of the best way to implement one of the web applications in Drupal. I am running into a knowledge barrier and wondered if any of you could fill in the gaps. Situation The client has a Lotus Domino application which serves as a front-end for querying a large DB2 data store and returning a result set (generally in table form) to a user via the web. The web application provides access to approximately 100 pre-defined queries--50 of which are public and 50 of which are secured. Most of the queries accept some set of user selected parameters as input. The output of the queries is typically returned to users in a list (table) format. A limited number of result sets allow drill-down through the HTML table into detail records. The query parameters often involve database queries themselves. For example, a single query may pull a list of company divisions into a drop-down. Once a division is selected, second drop-down with the departments from that division is populated--but perhaps only departments which meet some special criteria--such as those having taken a loss within a specific time frame. Most queries have 2-4 parameters with the average probably being 3. The application involves no data entry. None of the back-end data is ever modified by the web application. All access is purely based around querying data and viewing results. The queries change relatively infrequently, and the current system has been in place for approximately 10 years. There may be 10-20 query additions, modifications, or other changes in a given year. The client simply desires to change the presentation platform but absolutely does not want to re-do the 100 database queries. Once the project is implemented, the client wants their staff to take over and manage future changes. The client's staff have no background in Drupal or PHP but are somewhat willing to learn as necessary. How would you transition this into Drupal? My major knowledge void relates to how we would manage the query parameters and access the queries themselves. Here are a few specific questions but feel free to chime in on any issue related to this implementation. Would we have to build 100 forms by hand--with each form containing the parameters for a given query? If so, how would we do this? Approximately how long would it take to build/configure each of these forms? Is there a better way than manually building 100 forms? (I understand using CCK to enter data into custom content types but since we aren't adding any nodes, I am a little stuck as to how this might work.) Would it be possible for the internal staff to learn to create these query parameter forms--even if they are unfamiliar with Drupal today? Would they be required to do any PHP programming? How would we take the query parameters from a form and execute a query against DB2? Would this require a custom module? If so, would it require one module total or one module per query? (Note: There is apparently a DB2 driver available for Drupal. See http://groups.drupal.org/node/5511.) Note: I am not looking for CMS recommendations other than Drupal as Drupal nicely fits all of the client's other requirements, and I hope to help them standardize on a single platform. • jQuery UI sortable('cancel') - this.helper is null

  I am trying to disable a sortable element from sorting when it has been double clicked. I don't need it to be this method. Literally anything thing that stops it will work. The problem is, sorting starts on a single click, but I have another action bound to double click. If it's double clicked, I don't want it to drag.

• Covering Earth with Hexagonal Map Tiles

  Many strategy games use hexagonal tiles. One of the main advantages is that the distance between the center of any tile and all its neighboring tiles is the same. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on marrying a hexagonal tile system with the traditional geographic system (longitude/latitude). I think it would be interesting to cover a globe with hexagonal tiles and be able to map a geographic coordinate to a tile. Has anyone seen anything remotely close to this before? UPDATE I'm looking for a way to subdivide the surface of a sphere so that each division has the same surface area. Ideally, the centers of adjacent sub-divisions would be equidistant.

  I was studying shift operators in C#, trying to find out when to use them in my code. I found an answer but for Java, you could: a) Make faster integer multiplication and division operations: *4839534 * 4* can be done like this: 4839534 << 2 or 543894 / 2 can be done like this: 543894 1 Shift operations much more faster than multiplication for most of processors. b) Reassembling byte streams to int values c) For accelerating operations with graphics since Red, Green and Blue colors coded by separate bytes. d) Packing small numbers into one single long... For b, c and d I can't imagine here a real sample. Does anyone know if we can accomplish all these items in C#? Is there more practical use for shift operators in C#?

• Remove Duplicates from LEFT OUTER JOIN

  Hey folk my question is quite similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/757957/restricting-a-left-join I have a variation in that request though and the comment didn't allow too many characters hence posting as a new question. I hope this doesn't go against the posting rules/etiquette. Assuming i have a table SHOP and another table LOCATION. Location is a sort of child table of table SHOP, that has two columns of interest, one is a Division Key (calling it just KEY) and a "SHOP" number. This matches to the Number "NO" in table SHOP. I tried this left outer join: SELECT S.NO, L.KEY FROM SHOP S LEFT OUTER JOIN LOCATN L ON S.NO = L.SHOP But i'm getting a lot of duplicates since there are many locations that belong to a single shop. I want to eliminate them and just get a list of "shop, key" entries without duplicates. any ideas how? (edit: ORACLE 10g Database)

• Ever any performance different between Java >> and >>> right shift operators?

  Is there ever reason to think the (signed) and (unsigned) right bit-shift operators in Java would perform differently? I can't detect any difference on my machine. This is purely an academic question; it's never going to be the bottleneck I'm sure. I know: it's best to write what you mean foremost; use for division by 2, for example. I assume it comes down to which architectures have which operations implemented as an instruction.

• Best practices for fixed-width processing in .NET

  I'm working a .NET web service that will be processing a text file with a relatively long, multilevel record format. Each record in the file represents a different entity; the record contains multiple sub-types. (The same record format is currently being processed by a COBOL job, if that gives you a better picture of what we're looking at). I've created a class structure (a DATA DIVISION if you will) to hold the input data. My question is, what best practices have you found for processing large, complex fixed-width files in .NET? My general approach will be to read the entire line into a string and then parse the data from the string into the classes I've created. But I'm not sure whether I'll get better results working with the characters in the string as an array, or with the string itself. I guess that's the specific question, string vs. char[], but I would appreciate any other pointers anyone has. Thanks.

• Should developers know how to use office suites?

  How deep is your knowledge on Office suites? Personally i don't like them, i hate create and manage word documents, excel datasheets etc. etc. I'm not talking about opening a word document and write some text or calculate sum and division on excel; i'm talking about advanced features like revisions, vba macros and so on. I have a co-worker, actually he's a talented functional analyst, that don't know anything about programming but he's kind a monster guru on Microsoft Office suite. When he sits on my desk and asks me to open and modify some of his hardly complicated Microsoft Excel multicolor multipivotal recursive datasheet, ehm, i feel like a baby in front of a nuclear plant console.It' not a great feeling if you know what i mean. As programmer, do you feel guilty about not knowing office suites enough?

• SQL SELECT: "Give me all documents where all of the documents procedures are 'work in progress'"

  This one really has me stumped. I have a documents table which hold info about the documents, and a procedures table, which is kind of like a revisions table for each document. What I need to do is write a select statement which gives me all of the documents where all of the procedures have the status "work_in_progress". Here's an example procedures table: document_id | status 1 | 'wip' 1 | 'wip' 1 | 'wip' 1 | 'approved' 2 | 'wip' 2 | 'wip' 2 | 'wip' Here, I would want my query to only return document id 2, because all of its statuses are work_in_progress. I DO NOT want document_id 1 since one of its statuses is 'approved'. I believe this is relational division I want, but I'm not sure where to start. This is MySQL 5.0 FYI.

• Explanation of casting/conversion int/double in C#

  I coded some calculation stuff (I copied below a really simplifed example of what I did) like CASE2 and got bad results. Refactored the code like CASE1 and worked fine. I know there is an implicit cast in CASE 2, but not sure of the full reason. Any one could explain me what´s exactly happening below? //CASE 1, result 5.5 double auxMedia = (5 + 6); auxMedia = auxMedia / 2; //CASE 2, result 5.0 double auxMedia1 = (5 + 6) / 2; //CASE 3, result 5.5 double auxMedia3 = (5.0 + 6.0) / 2.0; //CASE 4, result 5.5 double auxMedia4 = (5 + 6) / 2.0; My guess is that /2 in CASE2 is casting (5 + 6) to int and causing round of division to 5, then casted again to double and converted to 5.0. CASE3 and CASE 4 also fixes the problem.

• Seemingly useless debugging environment for Android

  I've just started debugging my first three line long android app and I can't seem to use the debug tool like I want to. Here's my code: public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); int a = 1 / 0; } Now I expect the debugger to halt the thread and show me the line number of statement where the division by zero occurs. No, instead it shows some other method internal to the system for which I have no source. To make the matters worse, there is no exception message either. Prior to this app, I created one which would do something when a button was pressed. If any exception was raised, again no useful line number or exception message would be shown. As of right now, there is no way to debug my app. Any ideas? I'm using the latest SDK along with Eclipse ADT plugin and debugging on a real device (Nexus One).

• Storing DOM reference elements in a Javascript array

  Dear experts, I was trying to dynamically generate DOM elements using JS. I read from Douglas Crockford's book that DOM is very very poorly structured. Anyways, I would like to create a number of DIVISION elements and store the reference into an array so it could be accessed later. Here's the code for(i=0;i<3;i++){ var div=document.body.appendChild(document.createElement("div")); var arr=new Array(); arr.push(div); } Somehow this would not work..... There is only 1 div element created. When I use the arr.length to test the code there is only 1 element in the array. Is there another way to accomplish this? Thanks in advance

• getting detailed information about structured exceptions

  My Visual C++ application is compiled with /EHA option, letting me catch structured exceptions (division by zero, access violation, etc). I then translate those exceptions to my own exception class using _set_se_translator(). My goal is to improve our logging of those types of exceptions. I can get the type of exception from the EXCEPTION_RECORD structure, and the exception address. I would like to be able to gather more information, like the source file/location where the exception is thrown, the call stack, etc. Is that possible? I do create an exception minidump on structured exceptions - is there a tool to automatically get the call stack from that?

Not the best thing: v1 = (a,b) v2 = (c,d) d1 = (e,f) d2 = (h,i) l1: v1 + ?d1 l2: v2 + µd2 Equation to find vector intersection of l1 and l2 programatically by re-arranging for lambda. (a,b) + ?(e,f) = (c,d) + µ(h,i) a + ?e = c + µh b +?f = d + µi µh = a + ?e - c µi = b +?f - d µ = (a + ?e - c)/h µ = (b +?f - d)/i (a + ?e - c)/h = (b +?f - d)/i a/h + ?e/h - c/h = b/i +?f/i - d/i ?e/h - ?f/i = (b/i - d/i) - (a/h - c/h) ?(e/h - f/i) = (b - d)/i - (a - c)/h ? = ((b - d)/i - (a - c)/h)/(e/h - f/i) Intersection vector = (a + ?e,b + ?f) Not sure if it would even work in some cases. I haven't tested it. I need to know how to do this for values as in that example a-i. Thank you.

• Upon doing a XSL Transform to XML how do I remove white space from a Node's attribute or data?

  I have a part's list built out in XML and each part is labeled as such: <division> <parts> <part number="123456 " drawing="123456 " cad="y"> <attribute> <header>Header</header> <list>2</list> </attribute> </part> And I need to get the data behind the number and drawing attributes without the white space. I tried xsl:strip-space on the specific elements, and across the board, but that only strips the content in between the tags. I unfortunately have no access to the back-end that's producing the XML, so removing the spaces there doesn't look like an option.

  Let's suppose I want to inform the application about what happened / returned the SQL server. Let's have this code block: BEGIN TRY -- Generate divide-by-zero error. SELECT 1/0; END TRY BEGIN CATCH SELECT ERROR_NUMBER() AS ErrorNumber, ERROR_SEVERITY() AS ErrorSeverity, ERROR_STATE() as ErrorState, ERROR_PROCEDURE() as ErrorProcedure, ERROR_LINE() as ErrorLine, ERROR_MESSAGE() as ErrorMessage; END CATCH; GO and Let's have this code block: SELECT 1/0; My question is: Both return the division by zero error. What I don't understand clearly is that why I should surround it with the try catch clausule when I got that error in both cases ? Isn't it true that this error will be in both cases propagated to the client application ?
