  • Migrating 10-15 Websites Running Linux, LAMP, RoR, WordPress

    - by Michael
Task is to move 10-15 websites running Linux to new servers hosted by Amazon. These boxes are currently on dedicated servers. Some sites are running WordPress, some have custom CMS, and others might have RoR applications. Unfortunately, there is sparse documentation regarding each site and how services/files are dependent on each other which means there is a lot of detective work that needs to take place. My goal is to properly document each site, what makes them work, etc., so future admins have at least something to work with. Currently my strategy is to download each site so I have a backup of the files then scan through them looking for configuration files -- db connections, apache configs, etc. Then, create a nice spreadsheet with these findings and migrate these out to the new server. My question to ServerFault is this, are there things you would look out for? Easier ways to handle this task that I'm missing? Points will be awarded to answers that help with efficiency. Thanks in advance.

  • Linux webserver tutorials (WordPress)

    - by HannesFostie
Hi I will be setting up a linux webserver to host WordPress on. The problem is that although I know how to do it, I don't know how to properly do it. So I'm now looking for semi-advanced tutorials that are complete and secure above anything else. I don't really mind trying a new distro, but I prefer ubuntu/debian. I read this post: Any good resources for setting up a webserver in Linux ? But these are very limited. So far not a lot of luck finding good guides and howtos. This should probably be a community wiki but I can't seem to transform it myself. Thanks

  • Network architecture when using Rackspace's Cloud

    - by brianz
I'm planning on launching a web application soon, and have decided on using Rackspace's Cloud offering with Debian. I'm not expecting that much traffic to start, but would rather get the architecture correct now even with the small VPSs. The thing I'm not quite sure about is how many VPSs I should get. At a minimum, I know I'll want three VPSs: Two Apache webservers One server for MySQL I'd also like: Nginx load balancer MySQL replication memcached I'm not sure where those last three processes should be running. Can the load balancer run on the same machine as the MySQL slave, or should they each run on their own machine? Does memcached run alongside the webservers or on different machines?

  • Apache is running the wrong version of PHP.

    - by The Rook
I am trying to enable CURL in php, and possibly update php as well. I have run into a road block where Apache seems to be running the wrong version of PHP. Here is some evidence. #lsof | grep php httpd 18397 nobody 135w REG 8,3 242 528537 /usr/local/apache/modules/libphp5.so I download the latest php 5.2.13 and build from source. I run a service httpd stop, do a make install and then I manually overwrite /usr/local/apache/modules/libphp5.so just to be safe. Using ldd i can see that its my fresh binary compiled with curl (the old one doesn't have curl.) ldd /usr/local/apache/modules/libphp5.so | grep curl libcurl.so.4 => /usr/local/lib/libcurl.so.4 (0x0064e000) I execute a phpinfo() and 5.2.3 is being executed instated of my new 5.2.13 and "curl" is nowhere to be found. What am I doing wrong? Why is curl disabled even though its statically linked? This is a RHEL 5.5 system.

  • Write permissions LAMP (Debian Lenny)

    - by letseatfood
I am working on a PHP script that transfers files using FTP functions. It has always worked on my production server (which is a hosting service). The development server I have just setup (I am a novice to servers) is Debian Lenny with Apache2, PHP5, and MySQL5. The file transfer works correctly, but once the file has been written to the server, it has permissions of 600. This makes it impossible for me to view the file (JPEG) in the web browser, as permission is denied. I have scoured the internet and even broken my server installation and reinstalled it trying to figure this out (which has been fun, nonetheless!). I know it is unwise to set 777 permissions on public accessible files, but even that will not solve the problem. The only thing that works is if I chmod 777 thefile.jpg after it has been transferred, which is not a working solution. I tried changing the owner of my site files to www-data per this post, but that also does not work. My user is mike, and it still does not work whether the owner of the files is mike or root. Would somebody point me in the right direction? Thanks! And, of course, let me know if I can clarify anything.

  • Which Linux distributive could you advise for a webserver with PIII-700MHz and 512Mb RAM?

    - by Andrei
Hi everybody, We need to update our webserver (PIII-700MHz and 512Mb RAM) and could not do that without reinstalling the whole system. However my choice to put Ubuntu 9.10 was probably not the best and the machine works very slow now. Actually, we need it just for simple LAPM configuration and we really want to use the old box for this purpose. It used to have old version of Linux Slackware in which I didn't manage to update PHP due to a very complicated non-standard setup. What would you recommend?

  • Permission forbidden on localhost with apache2

    - by N Alex
Here is what I am trying to do. I tried to add another folder to apache and I get the following error when trying to acces testing/index.html. The idea is that I would like to have for every customer a folder like /home/neagoe/Work/InterWebs/Projects/[PROJECT NAME]/CustomerProjects/website/dist. Forbidden You don't have permission to access /index.html on this server. Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu) Server at testing Port 80 Here are the steps that I followed: Step1: sudo chmod a+x /home/neagoe/Work/InterWebs/Projects/testing/CustomerProjects/website/dist Step2: sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /home/neagoe/Work/InterWebs/Projects/testing/CustomerProjects/website/dist sudo chmod -R 775 /home/neagoe/Work/InterWebs/Projects/testing/CustomerProjects/website/dist Step3: sudo adduser $USER www-data Step4: sudo a2enmod userdir Step5: sudo cp /etc/apache/sites-available/default /etc/apache/sites-available/testing I edited the file /etc/apache/sites-available/testing so it looks like this: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost ServerName testing DocumentRoot /home/neagoe/Work/InterWebs/Projects/testing/CustomerProjects/website/dist <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory /home/neagoe/Work/InterWebs/Projects/testing/CustomerProjects/website/dist/ > Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow, deny allow from all </Directory> ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ <Directory "/usr/lib/cgi-bin"> AllowOverride None Options +ExecCGI -MultiViews +SymLinksIfOwnerMatch Order allow, deny Allow from all </Directory> ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log # Possible values include: debug, info, notice, warn, error, crit, # alert, emerg. LogLevel warn CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined </VirtualHost> Step6: I edited hosts ("/etc/hosts") so it looks like this: 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.0.1 testing # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts ::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters Step7: sudo a2ensite testing sudo service apache2 restart I searched for about 2 hours on the internet but I can't figure out what went wrong. All the pages that I found following the same steps as described above. I know there are similar questions here on the internet, but the answer is to change permission to the directory which I did on Step2. I am sorry if this is really a duplicate but I could't find the right answer. Thank you! PS. I asked this also on AskUbuntu but didn't get any answers so I'm trying my luck here. Edit: There isn't much on the error log or the access log. • Should I split my website into different servers

    - by Nyxynyx
I have a website where a user uploads photos, the photos gets resized and thumbnailed, and stored on the server. At the same time, there are some INSERTS into a MySQL table regarding the photo uploaded (like description, user id etc). The site currently runs off a managed VPS, and I love the support it provides. However it is expensive to store the many small photos and the resizing and thumbnailing processes do cause spikes on the app performance. (Amazon S3 is pretty expensive, especially considering the costs for uploading many small files) Question: Will it be a good idea to move the image processing operations and image storage to another server which is an unmanaged dedicated server with a much lower cost/gb and keep the current VPS for its 24/7 support and hosting the webapp? Or should I move the entire site to the dedicated server? • UCEProtect Level 3 - Emails land in SPAM

    - by preetam
I am not sure how i can have remove the IP from UCEPROTECT Level 3. Or a way in which i can send emails without them landing into spam. The IP which i have used has only sent emails to the users which they have asked for and naturally not listed for spamming. But the Service provider is. Any suggestion?, as i don't see the institution for which the setup has been made would change the ISP at this stage. Thank You

  • Having trouble keeping a 1GB RAM Centos server running

    - by Josh
This is my first time configuring a VPS server and I'm having a few issues. We're running Wordpress on a 1GB Centos server configured per the internet (online research). No custom queries or anything crazy but closing in on 8K posts. At arbitrary intervals, the server just goes down. From the client side, it just says "Loading..." and will spin more or less indefinitely. On the server side, the shell will lock completely. We have to do a hard reboot from the control panel and then everything is fine. Watching "top" I see it hovering between 35 - 55% memory usage generally and occasional spikes up to around 80%. When I saw it go down, there were about 30 - 40 Apache processes showing which pushed memory over the edge. "error_log" tells me that maxclients was reached right before each reboot instance. I've tried tinkering with that but to no avail. I think we'll probably need to bump the server up to the next RAM level but with ~120K pageviews per month, it seems like that's a bit overkill since it was running fairly well on a shared server before. Any ideas? httpd.conf and my.cnf values to add? I'll update this with the current ones if that helps. Thanks in advance! This has been a fun and important learning experience but, overall, quite frustrating! I had a lighttpd server which works normally. I can access this website from outside(non-localhost) via http://vm.aaa.com:8080. Let's just assume that it's a simple static website, without php or mysql. Now I want to copy this website as a test one(using another port) in the same machine. And I do not want to use virtual host. So I just copy the whole files of original server, including lighttpd's bin/ conf/ htdocs/ lib/ and so on folders. And I made some required change, including changing lighttpd.conf. Now what I'm confused is, if change the port to a number that is less than 9000, it works perfectly. But if the port is changed to a number that is equal or greater than 9000, lighttpd can start, but I can not access the new website from outside, while I do can access the new website from INSIDE(I mean in the same LAN or localhost). The access log from INSIDE is like below: vm.aaa.com:9876 10.46.175.117 - - [08/Oct/2012:13:18:47 +0800] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 15 "-" " curl/7.12.1 (x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu) libcurl/7.12.1 OpenSSL/0.9.7a zlib/1.2.1.2 libidn/0.5.6" Command I used to start lighttpd is: bin/lighttpd -f conf/lighttpd.conf -m lib/ -D My lighttpd.conf is like: server.modules = ( "mod_access", "mod_accesslog", ) var.rundir = "/home/work/lighttpd_9876" server.port = 9876 server.bind = "0.0.0.0" server.pid-file = var.rundir + "/log/lighttpd.pid" server.document-root = var.rundir + "/htdocs/" var.cronolog_path = "/home/work/lighttpd_9876/cronolog/sbin/cronolog" server.errorlog = ... accesslog.filename = ... ... So why is this happening? I've tried several diffrent ports, still the same. Isn't that ports between 8000 and 65535 are the same?

  • Password Self-serve Active Directory via LAMP environment

    - by keithosu
I would like to be able to change active directory passwords via a Linux/Apache based webpage. This would be a self serve web page for the user. I have SSL-LDAP setup on the Active Directory to make this happen. Is there any project or code out there that will do this? I've looked at this phpadadmin and I cannot get it to work. I think this is for IIS/php/mySQL Another thing to note is I would like the user to authenticate to change their own password. The product/service should not need a privileged account to run. Thanks Keith

  • Secure against c99 and similar shells

    - by Amit Sonnenschein
    I'm trying to secure my server as much as i can without limiting my options, so as a first step i've prevented dangerous functions with php disable_functions = "apache_child_terminate, apache_setenv, define_syslog_variables, escapeshellarg, escapeshellcmd, eval, exec, fp, fput, ftp_connect, ftp_exec, ftp_get, ftp_login, ftp_nb_fput, ftp_put, ftp_raw, ftp_rawlist, highlight_file, ini_alter, ini_get_all, ini_restore, inject_code, mysql_pconnect, openlog, passthru, php_uname, phpAds_remoteInfo, phpAds_XmlRpc, phpAds_xmlrpcDecode, phpAds_xmlrpcEncode, popen, posix_getpwuid, posix_kill, posix_mkfifo, posix_setpgid, posix_setsid, posix_setuid, posix_setuid, posix_uname, proc_close, proc_get_status, proc_nice, proc_open, proc_terminate, shell_exec, syslog, system, xmlrpc_entity_decode" but i'm still fighting directory travel, i can't seems to be able to limit it, by using a shell script like c99 i can travel from my /home/dir to anywhere on the disc. how can i limit it once and for all ?

  • Amazon EC2: Instances, IPs and a wordpress blog (LAMP)

    - by JustinXXVII
I had a link to my blog posted on Reddit yesterday and MySQL crashed on my EC2 Micro instance. I know I didn't have that many visitors because I used a marketing link that tracks hits. The link got 167 hits over the course of the last 18 hours, and MySQL crashed twice. So anyway, 167 visits is not a lot, so I've done some short term optimizations like restricting the number of Apache threads to limit the MySQL calls. I also set up WP Super Cache to serve static content. Soon I'm going to offload all of my images to S3 or CloudFront. So this leads me to my question. If this doesn't seem to help, and if i have another traffic "spike", how do AMIs work when you have a MySQL database? I think I understand that if you have more than one instance and assign the same Elastic IP to both of them, the incoming traffic gets distributed among both. But what happens when the MySQL database gets updated on one of the instances? I just need to wrap my mind around what happens when I create an AMI and then launch a new instance to help with traffic. Thanks for your suggestions.

  • VPS Memory Exchausted Even With Light Settings

    - by user101570
Linux noob here. I have a 256MB VPS on Ubuntu 11.04 server and when I run "free -m" the result shows all memory being used (including the second line re: buffers/cache). I found this very strange, considering I only have 5 Apache processes running each chewing up about 20MB each. MYSQL is taking up 30MB. To my knowledge, and according to "top", I have no other memory hogs operating. Settings that may be relevant: PHP memory_limit = 32M MYSQL key_buffer = 16M Prefork MPM Maxclients = 10 So when I reviewed these settings, I naturally thought maxclients was too high, so I tried switching it to 5. Now not only does my memory still show as being 100% used, my website loads much, much slower, despite not getting any traffic aside from mine at the moment. I don't understand this. I thought a single Apache process handles all requests from a client received within the "KeepAliveTimeout" window, which I've set to 2 seconds. With my initial config. of 10 maxclients, my page load times are around .3ms, so a single process should handle that no problem, correct? So next I went to an extreme level of 1 for maxclients. My memory is still at 100% usage and my site loads painfully slow. I'm a noob at a complete loss here. According to the many tutorials I've read on basic server setup, I should be good to go. Help! Please! Edit: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 256 256 0 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 256 0 Swap: 0 0 0
