  • Is a .Net membership database portable, or are accounts somehow bound to the originating Web site or

    - by Deane
I have an ASP.Net Web site using .Net Membership with a SQL Server provider, so the users and roles are stored in the SQL tables created by Aspnet_regsql.exe. Is this architecture totally self-contained and portable, or are users in it somehow bound to the specific Web site on which they create their account? Put another way, if we create a bunch of users in dev or UAT, the back up and restore this database to another server, accessed under another domain name, should it still work just fine? We're seeing some odd behavior when we move the database, like users losing group affiliation and such, and I'm curious how portable and environment-agnostic this database really is. I have a sneaking suspicion that something is bound to the machine key or the domain.

  • Django filter with two constraints on related model

    - by BJ Homer
I have a django app with models as follows: A Question model An Answer model, with a ForeignKey back to the Question. (A question can have multiple answers.) A Flag model, with a ForeignKey to the Answer. (An answer can be flagged as inappropriate.) All of the above also have a user field, defining the user that created that object. I'm trying to get a list of all Questions with answers from the current user which have been flagged. I tried this: Question.objects.filter(answer__user=user).\ filter(answer__flag__isnull=True).distinct() … but I believe that will return a list of Questions with answers from the current user and with answers which have been flagged, but will not necessarily guarantee that it is the user's answer that has been flagged. Is there an easy way to do this? Basically, I want to make the answer part of the filter refer to the same answer on both of them. Please let me know if something is unclear.

  • Convert the code from PHP to Ruby

    - by theband
public function getFtime() { $records=array(); $sql="SELECT * FROM `finishedtime`"; $result=mysql_query($sql); if(!$result){throw new Exception(mysql_error());} if(mysql_num_rows($result)==0){return $records;} while($row=mysql_fetch_assoc($result)){$records[]=$row;} return $records; } I am in the process of learning Ruby, can anyone convert this code into Ruby. This will make me construe on how to run a query and thrown the fetched result back.

  • MVC Entity Framework Model not returning correct data

    - by quagland
Hi, Run into a strange problem while writing an ASP.NET MVC site. I have a view in my SQL Server database that returns a few date ranges. The view works fine when running the query in SSMS. When the view data is returned by the Entity Framework Model, It returns the correct number of rows but some of the rows are duplicated. Here is an example of what I have done: SQL Server code: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[A]( [ID] [int] NOT NULL, [PhID] [int] NULL, [FromDate] [datetime] NULL, [ToDate] [datetime] NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK_A] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ([ID] ASC)) ON [PRIMARY] go CREATE TABLE [dbo].[B]( [PhID] [int] NOT NULL, [FromDate] [datetime] NULL, [ToDate] [datetime] NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK_B] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [PhID] ASC )) ON [PRIMARY] go CREATE VIEW C as SELECT A.ID, CASE WHEN A.PhID IS NULL THEN A.FromDate ELSE B.FromDate END AS FromDate, CASE WHEN A.PhID IS NULL THEN A.ToDate ELSE B.ToDate END AS ToDate FROM A LEFT OUTER JOIN B ON A.PhID = B.PhID go INSERT INTO B (PhID, FromDate, ToDate) VALUES (100, '20100615', '20100715') INSERT INTO A (ID, PhID, FromDate, ToDate) VALUES (1, NULL, '20100101', '20100201') INSERT INTO A (ID, PhID, FromDate, ToDate) VALUES (1, 100, '20100615', '20100715') INSERT INTO B (PhID, FromDate, ToDate) VALUES (101, '20101201', '20101231') INSERT INTO A (ID, PhID, FromDate, ToDate) VALUES (2, NULL, '20100801', '20100901') INSERT INTO A (ID, PhID, FromDate, ToDate) VALUES (2, 101, '20101201', '20101231') So now, if you select all from C, you get 4 separate date ranges In the Entity Framework Model (which I call 'Core'), the view 'C' is added. in MVC Controller: public class HomeController : Controller { public ActionResult Index() { CoreEntities db = new CoreEntities(); var clist = from c in db.C select c; return View(clist.ToList()); } } in MVC View: @model List<RM.Models.C> @{ foreach (RM.Models.C c in Model) { @String.Format("{0:dd-MMM-yyyy}", c.FromDate) <span>-</span> @String.Format("{0:dd-MMM-yyyy}", c.ToDate) <br /> } } When I run all this, it outputs this: 01-Jan-2010 - 01-Feb-2010 01-Jan-2010 - 01-Feb-2010 01-Aug-2010 - 01-Sep-2010 01-Aug-2010 - 01-Sep-2010 When it should do this (this is what the view returns): 01-Jan-2010 - 01-Feb-2010 15-Jun-2010 - 15-Jul-2010 01-Aug-2010 - 01-Sep-2010 01-Dec-2010 - 31-Dec-2010 Also, I've run the SQL profiler over it and according to that, the query being executed is: SELECT [Extent1].[ID] AS [ID], [Extent1].[FromDate] AS [FromDate], [Extent1].[ToDate] AS [ToDate] FROM (SELECT [C].[ID] AS [ID], [C].[FromDate] AS [FromDate], [C].[ToDate] AS [ToDate] FROM [dbo].[C] AS [C]) AS [Extent1] Which returns the correct data So it seems that the entity framework is doing something to the data in the meantime. To me, everything looks fine! Have I missed something? Cheers, Ben

  • How do I politely tell a colleague to RTFM?

    - by Jason Baker
I think by now, I've transitioned from a junior developer to an "intermediate" developer. Previously, whenever someone would ask me a question, I'd gleefully answer them simply because I was happy to be of use to someone and wanted to prove my worth as a developer. Now it's gotten to the point where I can't get work done because I'm constantly answering questions that can be answered just by spending a few seconds looking at documentation or searching google (sometimes from developers more senior than I). On one hand, I genuinely want to help them out and enjoy teaching other people. However, I just don't have enough bandwidth to keep answering these kinds of questions. How do I handle this kind of thing politely?

  • Preventing spam bots on site?

    - by Mike
We're having an issue on one of our fairly large websites with spam bots. It appears the bots are creating user accounts and then posting journal entries which lead to various spam links. It appears they are bypassing our captcha somehow -- either it's been cracked or they're using another method to create accounts. We're looking to do email activation for the accounts, but we're about a week away from implementing such changes (due to busy schedules). However, I don't feel like this will be enough if they're using an SQL exploit somewhere on the site and doing the whole cross site scripting thing. So my question to you: If they are using some kind of XSS exploit, how can I find it? I'm securing statements where I can but, again, its a fairly large site and it'd take me awhile to actively clean up SQL statements to prevent XSS. Can you recommend anything to help our situation?

  • Dynamically append number to PDF or make submit button change its URL based on that number.

    - by jamone
I'm serving up PDFs from a SQL db and presenting them in the browser. I'm trying to figure out a way to embed a number in the PDF dynamically that is the recordID for that PDFs SQL record so that when the user hits the submit button and the form submits its XML data to my submission page I can tell which PDF this is. If there is some way of changing the submission URL on the fly then I could do a query string to pass my self the recordID. I'm not generating the PDF in code, its being created by hand and then uploaded to my site.

  • Is ORM (Linq, Hibernate...) really that useful?

    - by Peter
I have been playing with some LINQ ORM (LINQ directly to SQL) and I have to admit I like its expressive powers . For small utility-like apps, It also works quite fast: dropping a SQL server on some surface and you're set to linq away. For larger apps however, the DAL never was that big of an issue to me to setup, nor maintain, and more often than not, once it was set, all the programming was not happening there anyway... My, honest - I am an ORM newbie - question : what is the big advantage of ORM over writing a decent DAL by hand? (seems like a double, couldn't find it though) UPDATE : OK its a double :-) I found it myself eventually : ORM vs Handcoded Data Access Layer

  • Linq query joining with a subquery

    - by Alan Fisher
I am trying to reproduce a SQL query using a LINQ to Entities query. The following SQL works fine, I just don't see how to do it in LINQ. I have tried for a few hours today but I'm just missing something. SELECT h.ReqID, rs.RoutingSection FROM ReqHeader h JOIN ReqRoutings rr ON rr.ReqRoutingID = (SELECT TOP 1 r1.ReqRoutingID FROM ReqRoutings r1 WHERE r1.ReqID = h.ReqID ORDER BY r1.ReqRoutingID desc) JOIN ReqRoutingSections rs ON rs.RoutingSectionID = rr.RoutingSectionID Edit*** Here is my table scema- Requisitions: ReqID PK string ReqDate datetime etc... ReqRoutings: ID PK int ReqID FK RoutingSection FK int RoutingDate ReqRoutingSections: Id PK int RoutingSection string The idea is that each Requisition can be routed many times, for my query I need the last RoutingSection to be returned along with the Requisition info. Sample data: Requisitions: - 1 record ReqID 123456 ReqDate '12/1/2012' ReqRoutings: -- 3 records id 1 ReqID 123456 RoutingSection 3 RoutingDate '12/2/2012' id 2 ReqID 123456 RoutingSection 2 RoutingDate '12/3/2012' id 3 ReqID 123456 RoutingSection 4 RoutingDate '12/4/2012' ReqRoutingSections: -- 3 records id 2 Supervision id 3 Safety id 4 Qaulity Control The results of the query would be ReqID = '123456' RoutingSection = 'QualityControl' -- Last RoutingSection requisition was routed to

  • Is an ORM redundant with a NoSQL API?

    - by Earlz
Hello, with MongoDB (and I assume other NoSQL database APIs worth their salt) the ways of querying the database are much more simplistic than SQL. There is no tedious SQL queries to generate and such. For instance take this from mongodb-csharp: using MongoDB.Driver; Mongo db = new Mongo(); db.Connect(); //Connect to localhost on the default port. Document query = new Document(); query["field1"] = 10; Document result = db["tests"]["reads"].FindOne(query); db.Disconnect(); How could an ORM even simplify that? Is an ORM or other "database abstraction device" required on top of a decent NoSQL API?

  • how to have defined connection within function for pdo communication with DB

    - by Scarface
    hey guys I just started trying to convert my query structure to PDO and I have come across a weird problem. When I call a pdo query connection within a function and the connection is included outside the function, the connection becomes undefined. Anyone know what I am doing wrong here? I was just playing with it, my example is below. include("includes/connection.php"); function query(){ $user='user'; $id='100'; $sql = 'SELECT * FROM users'; $stmt = $conn->prepare($sql); $result=$stmt->execute(array($user, $id)); // now iterate over the result as if we obtained // the $stmt in a call to PDO::query() while($r = $stmt->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)) { echo "$r[username] $r[id] \n"; } } query();

  • Best way to store 3 pieces of data as a single entry

    - by Matt
For a game server, I want to record details when a player makes a kill, store this, and then at intervals update to a sql database. The part i'm interested in right now is the best method of storing the kill information. What i'd like to pass to the sql server on update would be {PlayerName, Kills, Deaths}, where the kills and deaths are a sum for the period between updates. So i'm assuming i'd build a list along the lines of {bob, 1, 0} {frank, 0, 1} {tom, 1, 0} {frank, 0, 1} then on update, consolidate the list to {frank, 14, 3}etc Can someone offer some advice please?

  • Is it possible to convert Gregorian to Hijri date in Vb ?

    - by ahmed
Hi, I have a table in sql where the date format is stored in Hijri. Now I am working on a vb.net application where I have to let the user update that dateField. So is it possible that if I place a datepicker(which is in Gregorian) and user selects the date and its converts into Hijri date before updating. I mean when the user selects the date and clicks the save button the date should be updated in hijri format in the sql . For now , the user is entering the date manually on a tms AdvEdit. Is there any code available to accomplish this task. Thanking you all in advance for your time and consideration.

  • Best method to cleanly shut down an application launched via another.

    - by JYelton
I couldn't find any close answers to this, so I'm consulting the experience of SO users: Scenario: I have two small C# winforms applications where one behaves as a server or host, the other as a client. They share data via SQL Server, in terms of configuration settings. I am currently launching the client application (which only needs to run periodically) from the server application via Process.Start() and terminating it via Process.CloseMainWindow() (after finding it in the process list). While it seems clean enough, I wondered if there's a better way. Question: Which way would be best to instruct the client application to shut down: Continue using Process.CloseMainWindow()? Implement WCF between the applications? (I would need help on how to do this.) Set a variable in SQL that the client application checks for? Some other way?

  • Pros and cons of sorting data in DB?

    - by Roman
Let's assume I have a table with field of type VARCHAR. And I need to get data from that table sorted alphabetically by that field. What is the best way (for performance): add sort by field to the SQL-query or sort the data when it's already fetched? I'm using Java (with Hibernate), but I can't tell anything about DB engine. It could be any popular relational database (like MySQL or MS Sql Server or Oracle or HSQL DB or any other). The amount of records in table can vary greatly but let's assume there are 5k records.

  • Complain about jQuery Tag's

    - by jAndy
Hi Folks, I'm complaining about the growth of jQuery tagged questions at stackoverflow. There are so many people who ask, 'How to implement a specific plugin?' or 'How to use that plugin?' which makes me kinda sick. IMO: If you Tag a question to jQuery, javascript or C, it should be a question about the language itself and not some 'goofy' little plugin. Best case scenario, Tag those questions with jquery-plugins. I know I'm breaking my own rule along with this post, but I just realized that trend and I'm really interested in other opinions about that. Kind Regards --Andy

  • Is learning how to use C (or C++) a requirement in order to be a good (excellent) programmer?

    - by blueberryfields
When I first started to learn how to program, real programmers could write assembly in their sleep. Any serious schooling in computer science would include a hefty bit of training and practice in programming using assembly. That has since changed, to the point where I see Computer Science degrees with assembly, if included at all, is relegated to one assignment, and one chapter, for a total of two weeks' work out of 4 years' schooling. C/C++ programming seems to have followed a similar path. I'm no longer surprised to interview university graduates who have not spent more than two weeks programming in C++, and have only read of C in a book somewhere. While the most serious CS degrees still seem to include significant time learning and using one or both of the languages, the trend is clearly towards less enforced C/C++ in school. It's clearly possible to make a career producing good work without ever reading or writing a single line of C or C++ code. Given all of that, is learning the two languages worth the effort? Are they at all required to excel? (beyond the obvious, non-language specific advice, such as "a good selection of languages is probably important for a comprehensive education", and "it's probably a good idea to keep trying out and learning new languages throughout a programmers' career, just to stretch the gray cells")

  • Echo mysql results in a loop?

    - by Roy D. Porter
    I am using turn.js to make a book. Every div within the 'deathnote' div becomes a new page. <div id="deathnote"> //starts book <div style="background-image:url(images/coverpage.jpg);"></div> //creates new page <div style="background-image:url(images/paper.jpg);"></div> //creates new page <div style="background-image:url(images/paper.jpg);"></div> //creates new page </div> //ends book What I am doing is trying to get 3 'content' (content being a name and cause of death) divs onto 1 page, and then generate a new page. So here is what i want: <div id="deathnote"> //starts book <div style="background-image:url(images/coverpage.jpg);"></div> //creates new page <div style="background-image:url(images/paper.jpg);"></div> //creates new page <div style="background-image:url(images/paper.jpg);"> //creates new page but leaves it open <div> CONTENT </div> <div> CONTENT </div> <div> CONTENT </div> </div> //ends the page </div> //ends book Seems simple enough, however the content is data from a MySQL DB, so i have to echo it in using PHP. Here is what i have so far <div id="deathnote"> <div style="background-image:url(images/coverpage.jpg);"></div> <div style="background-image:url(images/paper.jpg);"></div> <div style="background-image:url(images/paper.jpg);"></div> <div style="background-image:url(images/paper.jpg);"></div> <div style="background-image:url(images/paper.jpg);"></div> <div style="background-image:url(images/paper.jpg);"></div> <?php $pagecount = 0; $db = new mysqli('localhost', 'username', 'passw', 'DB'); if($db->connect_errno > 0){ die('Unable to connect to database [' . $db->connect_error . ']'); } $sql = <<<SQL SELECT * FROM `TABLE` SQL; if(!$result = $db->query($sql)){ die('There was an error running the query [' . $db->error . ']'); } //IGNORE ALL OF THE GARBAGE ABOVE. IT IS SIMPLE CONNECTING SCRIPT THAT I KNOW WORKS //THE METHOD I AM HAVING TROUBLE WITH IS BELOW $pagecount = 0; while($row = $result->fetch_assoc()){ //GETS THE VALUE (and makes sure it isn't nothing echo '<div style="background-image:url(images/paper.jpg);">'; //THIS OPENS A NEW PAGE while ($pagecount !== 3) { //KEEPS COUNT OF HOW MUCH CONTENT DIVS IS ON THE PAGE while($row = $result->fetch_assoc()){ //START A CONTENT DIV echo '<div class="content"><div class="name">' . $row['victim'] . '</div><div class="cod">' . $row['cod'] . '</div></div>'; //END A CONTENT DIV $pagecount++; //UP THE PAGE COUNT } } $pagecount=0; //PUT IT BACK TO 0 echo '</div>'; //END PAGE } $db->close(); ?> <div style="background-image:url(images/backpage.jpg);"></div> //BACK PAGE </div> At the moment i seem to be causing and infinite loop so the page won't load. The problem resides within the while loops. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys. :)

Hi all, a bit of advice required here :). I recently graduated(Computer Science), and need to decide a path to take programming/technology wise. I have knowledge of Java, C, SQL most of it is university level stuff. I work daily with PHP/SQL building web apps. Which language / technology would you advise me to learn. I am very interested in Database management, GIS etc. Web dev is also very interesting to me. It is all a bit confusing since i would like to learn something that will have a value at least in the near future. I would like to have some ideas on which language/technology is god choice in order to be marketable.
