  • Parallelizing for loop

    - by vman049
    I have MATLAB code which I'm trying to parallelize with a simple change from "for" to "parfor." I'm unable to do so because of an error I'm receiving on the variable "votes" which states: Valid indices for 'votes' are restricted in PARFOR loops. Explanation: For MATLAB to execute parfor loops efficiently, the amount of data sent to the MATLAB workers must be minimal. One of the ways MATLAB achieves this is by restricting the way variables can be indexed in parfor iterations. The indicated variable is indexed in a way that is incompatible with parfor. Suggested Action: Fix the indexing. For a description of the indexing restrictions, see “Sliced Variables” in the Parallel Computing Toolbox documentation. Below is my code: votes = zeros(num_layers, size(spikes, 1), size(SVMs_layer1, 1)); predDir = zeros(size(spikes, 1), 1); chronProb = zeros([num_layers, size(chronDists)]); for i = 1:num_layers switch i case 1 B = B1; k_elem_temp = k_elem1; rest_elem_temp = rest_elem1; case 2 B = B2; k_elem_temp = k_elem2; rest_elem_temp = rest_elem2; case 3 B = B3; k_elem_temp = k_elem3; rest_elem_temp = rest_elem3; end for j = 1:length(chronPred) if chronDists(i, j, :) ~= 0 parfor k = 1:8 chronProb(i, j, k) = logistic(B{k}(1) + chronDists(i, j, k).*(B{k}(2))); votes(i, j, k_elem_temp(k, :)) = votes(i, j, k_elem_temp(k, :)) + chronProb(i, j, k)/num_k(i)/num_layers; votes(i, j, rest_elem_temp(k, :)) = votes(i, j, rest_elem_temp(k, :)) + (1 - chronProb(i, j, k))/num_rest(i)/num_layers; end end end end Do you have any suggestions as to how I could adjust my code so that it runs in parallel? Thank you!

  • Dynamic function arguments in C++, possible?

    - by Jeshwanth Kumar N K
    I am little new to C++, I have one doubt in variable argument passing. As I mentioned in a sample code below ( This code won't work at all, just for others understanding of my question I framed it like this), I have two functions func with 1 parameter and 2 parameters(parameter overloading). I am calling the func from main, before that I am checking whether I needs to call 2 parameter or 1 parameter. Here is the problem, as I know I can call two fuctions in respective if elseif statements, but I am curious to know whether I can manage with only one function. (In below code I am passing string not int, as I mentioned before this is just for others understanding purpose. #include<iostream.h> #include <string> void func(int, int); void func(int); void main() { int a, b,in; cout << "Enter the 2 for 2 arg, 1 for 1 arg\n"; cin << in; if ( in == 2) { string pass = "a,b"; } elseif ( in == 1) { string pass = "a"; } else { return 0; } func(pass); cout<<"In main\n"<<endl; } void func(int iNum1) { cout<<"In func1 "<<iNum1<<endl; } void func(int iNum1, int iNum2) { cout<<"In func2 "<<iNum1<<" "<<iNum2<<endl; }

  • Optimal (Time paradigm) solution to check variable within boundary

    - by kumar_m_kiran
    Hi All, Sorry if the question is very naive. I will have to check the below condition in my code 0 < x < y i.e code similar to if(x > 0 && x < y) The basic problem at system level is - currently, for every call (Telecom domain terminology), my existing code is hit (many times). So performance is very very critical, Now, I need to add a check for boundary checking (at many location - but different boundary comparison at each location). At very normal level of coding, the above comparison would look very naive without any issue. However, when added over my statistics module (which is dipped many times), performance will go down. So I would like to know the best possible way to handle the above scenario (kind of optimal way for limits checking technique). Like for example, if bit comparison works better than normal comparison or can both the comparison be evaluation in shorter time span? Other Info x is unsigned integer (which must be checked to be greater than 0 and less than y). y is unsigned integer. y is a non-const and varies for every comparison. Here time is the constraint compared to space. Language - C++. Now, later if I need to change the attribute of y to a float/double, would there be another way to optimize the check (i.e will the suggested optimal technique for integer become non-optimal solution when y is changed to float/double). Thanks in advance for any input. PS : OS used is SUSE 10 64 bit x64_64, AIX 5.3 64 bit, HP UX 11.1 A 64.

  • jQuery date calculator - show/hide IMG

    - by utopicam
    I have a problem with the following code. I tried changing many things (symbols, classes, imgs in the code) but this is killing me and I have no idea how to fix it. Sorry it's so specific, when solved I'll change the title to something more useful. I have two images. My jquery has to calculate the day and show one image or the other depending on that (using a class with display:none). My month has 24 days (it's a xmas thing). This is what I have so far: <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function(){ var currentTime = new Date() var day = currentTime.getDate(); if (day > 24){ day = 1; } $(".calDate").each(function(){ var curDate = $(this).attr("date"); if (curDate < day){ $(this).addClass("xMasPast"); } else if(curDate==day){ $(this).addClass("xMasActive"); } else { $(this).addClass("xMasInactive"); } }); $(".calDate2").each(function(){ var curDate = $(this).attr("date"); if (curDate > day){ $(this).addClass("xMasInactive"); } else if(curDate==day){ $(this).addClass("xMasActive"); } else { $(this).addClass("xMasActive"); } }); }); </script> But it's showing all the images. What am I missing? (any ideas on making the code simpler are more than welcomed). Thanks for your help! Update: simplified HTML <div><img src="day21.png" which="21"/></a></div> <img id="bola21" class="calDate2" src="day21.png"/>

  • switching on and off in jquery

    - by Mac Taylor
    hey my friends i wrote a code to switch on or off the status of a story ( activate or deactivate ) this is my html part : $status_link = $active==1 ? "active.gif" : "inactive.gif"; <span id='status_link'> <a class='change_status' href='javascript:void(0)' id='$pid'> <img src='images/$status_link' class='active_status' id='$active'></a> </span> and this is my jquery code : <script type="text/javascript">$(function(){ $('.change_status').each(function(){ var pid=$(this).attr('id'); $('.active_status').each(function(){ var type=$(this).attr('id'); .click(function(){ $.post("change_status.php"+"&type="+type+"&pid="+pid, function(data){ $('#status_link').html(data).fadeIn("slow"); }); return false; }); }); </script> and a php function that is easy, i dont think its needed i myself think there is a problem with my jquery code how can i change the picture of that image by clicking on it

  • Determining difference in timestamps for two values in the same MySQL table

    - by JayRizzo03
    I am relatively new to programming in PHP, so I apologize if this is a rather simple question. I have a MySQL database table called MachineReports that contains the following values: ReportNum(primary key, auto increment), MachineID and Timestamp Here is some example data: |ReportNum | MachineID | Timestamp | |1 | AD3203 | 2012-11-18 06:32:28| |2 | AD3203 | 2012-11-19 04:00:15| |3 | BC4300 | 2012-11-19 04:00:15| What I am attempting to do is find the difference in timestamps in seconds for each machine ID by iterating over each row set. I am getting stuck on the best way to do this, however. Here is the code I've written so far: <?php include '../dbconnect/dbconnect.php'; $machineID=[]; //Get a list of all MachineIDs in the database foreach($dbh->query('SELECT DISTINCT(MachineID) FROM MachineReports') as $row) { array_push($machineID, $row[0]); } for($i=0;$i<count($machineID);$i++){ foreach($dbh->query("SELECT MachineID FROM MachineReports WHERE MachineID='$machineID[$i]' ORDER BY MachineID") as $row) { //code to associate each machineID with two time stamps goes here } } ? This code just lists out the contents of the table row by row. My ultimate goal is to find the difference in timestamps for a certain MachineID. One of the things I've considered is using a multidimensional array in php - using the $machineID as the key and then storing the timestamp inside the array the key points to. However, I'm uncertain how to do that since my query parses row by row. I have quite a few questions. 1) Is this the most efficient way to be doing this? I suspect my database table design may not be the best. 2)What would be the best way to determine the difference in timestamps for a certain machineID? Even just a pointer to a topic that would prompt me to think about this in a different way would be helpful - I'm not afraid to do research. Thanks!

  • CSS div and image opacity effect

    - by user1704514
    The following code shows the image in the div tag. <div class='item'> <img class='img' src="image1.png" alt="" /> </div> I am using the following css to add effects to the html image code: img{ width:50px; height:50px; opacity:0.4; filter:alpha(opacity=40); } img:hover{ opacity:1.0; filter:alpha(opacity=100); } I am using this to have opacity effects in css. With this code, the opacity effect works well when I hover over the image itself. But how do I make it so that the opacity effect on the image occurs when I hover over the div tag instead. I want to be able to hover over any part of the item div which encapsulated the image, to get the change opacity effect on the image. NB effect on just the image not the entire div. Can this be done in css? If so how?

  • Another way to handle a common JQuery event handling pattern

    - by bradgonesurfing
    I have the following code for example $("a.foo").bind(function (e){ var t; if ( $(e.target).is("a") ){ t = $(e.target); }else{ t = $(e.target).parent("a"); } var data = t.attr("data-info"); }); In english. I might have a list of anchors within which there may be a number of spans. Each anchor is declared as <a class="foo" href="#" data-info="1"> <span> ... </span> <span> ... </span> </a> <a class="foo" href="#" data-info="2"> <span> ... </span> <span> ... </span> </a> ... ... I bind a handler to the click event of the anchor but the event object comes back with the anchor OR one of the spans depending on where I click. So to get my html5 "data-info" value into the callback I have to insert a bit of messy code. This is now appearing throughout my code to the point where I am guessing there might be an idiomatic JQuery way of handling this.

  • Guidelines for creating a programming-language enjoyable to write programs in?

    - by sub
    I'm currently working on the topic of programming-languages and interpreter-design. I have already created several programming languages but couldn't reach my goal so far: Create a programming-language which focuses on giving the programmer a good feeling when writing code in it. It should just be fun and/or interesting and in no case annoying to write something in it. I get this feeling when writing code in Python. I sometimes get the opposite with PHP and in rare cases when having to reinvent some wheel in C++. So I've tried to figure out some syntactical features to make programming in my new language fun, but I just can't find any. Which concrete features, maybe mainly in terms of syntax, do/could make programming in a language fun? Examples: I find it enjoyable to program in Ruby because of it's use of code blocks. It would be nice if you could include exactly one example in your answer Those features do not have to already exist in any language! I'm doing this because I have experienced extreme rises in (my own) productivity when programming in languages I love (because of particular features).

  • Dynamic programming Approach- Knapsack Puzzle

    - by idalsin
    I'm trying to solve the Knapsack problem with the dynamical programming(DP) approach, with Python 3.x. My TA pointed us towards this code for a head start. I've tried to implement it, as below: def take_input(infile): f_open = open(infile, 'r') lines = [] for line in f_open: lines.append(line.strip()) f_open.close() return lines def create_list(jewel_lines): #turns the jewels into a list of lists jewels_list = [] for x in jewel_lines: weight = x.split()[0] value = x.split()[1] jewels_list.append((int(value), int(weight))) jewels_list = sorted(jewels_list, key = lambda x : (-x[0], x[1])) return jewels_list def dynamic_grab(items, max_weight): table = [[0 for weight in range(max_weight+1)] for j in range(len(items)+1)] for j in range(1,len(items)+1): val= items[j-1][0] wt= items[j-1][1] for weight in range(1, max_weight+1): if wt > weight: table[j][weight] = table[j-1][weight] else: table[j][weight] = max(table[j-1][weight],table[j-1][weight-wt] + val) result = [] weight = max_weight for j in range(len(items),0,-1): was_added = table[j][weight] != table[j-1][weight] if was_added: val = items[j-1][0] wt = items[j-1][1] result.append(items[j-1]) weight -= wt return result def totalvalue(comb): #total of a combo of items totwt = totval = 0 for val, wt in comb: totwt += wt totval += val return (totval, -totwt) if totwt <= max_weight else (0,0) #required setup of variables infile = "JT_test1.txt" given_input = take_input(infile) max_weight = int(given_input[0]) given_input.pop(0) jewels_list = create_list(given_input) #test lines print(jewels_list) print(greedy_grab(jewels_list, max_weight)) bagged = dynamic_grab(jewels_list, max_weight) print(totalvalue(bagged)) The sample case is below. It is in the format line[0] = bag_max, line[1:] is in form(weight, value): 575 125 3000 50 100 500 6000 25 30 I'm confused as to the logic of this code in that it returns me a tuple and I'm not sure what the output tuple represents. I've been looking at this for a while and just don't understand what the code is pointing me at. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Can't seem to get my like/dislike to work in PHP

    - by user300371
    My table is comment_likedislike. It has the comment_counterid, comment_counter, comment_id(which is from another table) fields. And I have an url (LIKE) that when clicked would link to this code and get the comment_id and like_id. I want to do a count where if it is the first 'like', it would store a new comment_counter in the comment_likedislike table. But if there is already a 'like' for the comment in the table, it would just update the comment_counter to +1. Problem: When I run this code, it doesn't UPDATE(1st statement) but INSERT(2nd if statement) no matter if there is a like for the comment or not. I don't think the code is checking if the comment_id is in the table already. I am a novice php programmer. Thanks! if (isset($_GET['comment_id']) && isset($_GET['like_id'])) { $query5="SELECT * FROM comment_likedislike "; $data5=mysqli_query ($dbc, $query5); while ($row5= mysqli_fetch_array($data5)){ $comment_id2=$row5['comment_id']; } if ($comment_id2 == $_GET['comment_id']){ $counter=$row5['comment_counter']; $counter++; $query= "UPDATE comment_likedislike SET comment_counter ='$counter' WHERE comment_id= '".$_GET['comment_id']."' "; mysqli_query($dbc, $query); } if ($comment_id2 != $_GET['comment_id']) { $counter2=1; $query9 = "INSERT INTO comment_likedislike (comment_counter, comment_id) VALUES ('$counter2', '".$_GET['comment_id']."' )"; mysqli_query($dbc, $query9); } }

  • [javascript] Can I overload an object with a function?

    - by user257493
    Lets say I have an object of functions/values. I'm interested in overloading based on calling behavior. For example, this block of code below demonstrates what I wish to do. var main_thing = { initalized: false, something: "Hallo, welt!", something_else: [123,456,789], load: { sub1 : function() { //Some stuff }, sub2 : function() { //Some stuff }, all : function() { this.load.sub1(); this.load.sub2(); } } init: function () { this.initalized=true; this.something="Hello, world!"; this.something_else = [0,0,0]; this.load(); //I want this to call this.load.all() instead. } } The issue to me is that main_thing.load is assigned to an object, and to call main_thing.load.all() would call the function inside of the object (the () operator). What can I do to set up my code so I could use main_thing.load as an access the object, and main_thing.load() to execute some code? Or at least, similar behavior. Basically, this would be similar to a default constructor in other languages where you don't need to call main_thing.constructor(). If this isn't possible, please explain with a bit of detail.

  • How to open multiple socket connections and do callbacks in PHP

    - by Click Upvote
    I'm writing some code which processes a queue of items. The way it works is this: Get the next item flagged as needing to be processed from the mysql database row. Request some info from a google API using Curl, wait until the info is returned. Do the remainder of the processing based on the info returned. Flag the item as processed in the db, move onto the next item. The problem is that on step # 2. Google sometimes takes 10-15 seconds to return the requested info, during this time my script has to remain halted and wait. I'm wondering if I could change the code to do the following instead: Get the next 5 items to be processed as usual. Request info for items 1-5 from google, one after the other. When the info for item 1 is returned, a 'callback' should be done which calls up a function or otherwise calls some code which then does the remainder of the processing on items 1-5. And then the script starts over until all pending items in db are marked processed. How can something like this be achieved?

  • Identify words with ascending characters from text file

    - by user2914000
    I am having a fair amount of trouble trying to write a program that counts the amount of ascending words (words in which each character is larger than the previous character) in a text file. I have tried a few different methods to solve this but cannot seem to get it working. If anyone could help me revise the code to work properly it would be appreciated. The code will print about 5 of the words from the list of nearly 20000, but none considered are ascending (the file does have many ascending words) and it sometimes prints the same word twice. I am printing theWord to the console simply to see if the code works. import java.util.Scanner; import java.io.*; public class { public static void main (String [] args) throws FileNotFoundException{ String theWord; Scanner inputFile = new Scanner(new File("file.txt")); boolean ascending = true; int i = 1; while(inputFile.hasNextLine()){ theWord = inputFile.nextLine(); if(theWord.length() >= 2){ while(i < theWord.length() - 1){ if(theWord.charAt(i) <= theWord.charAt(i + 1)){ ascending = true; System.out.println("+ " + theWord); totalNum = totalNum + 1; } else{ ascending = false; System.out.println("= " + theWord); } i++; } } }

  • What is Rails way to DRY up the controller pattern of verifying :id is for a valid object (else redirect to error page)

    - by jpwynn
    One of my controllers has close to 100 methods (eg routes) and nearly every one starts out the same code to redirect to an error page if the id param is invalid, followed by a similar check if the user that id doesn't belong in the user's account: def something @foo = Foo.find_by_guid(params[:id]) unless @foo @msg ||= { :title => 'No such page!', :desc => "There is no such page!" } render :action => "error" and return end unless @foo.owner_id == current_user.id @msg ||= { :title => 'Really?', :desc => "There is no such page." } render :action => "error" and return end What is the best way to DRY up that sort of page id and owner id validation, given the code is doing a render ... and return? What I don't want to do at this point is offload it to a blackbox roles and permissions library like CanCan... my goal is simply to have the in-app code to handle this be as clean as possible.

  • F# why my recursion is faster than Seq.exists?

    - by user38397
    I am pretty new to F#. I'm trying to understand how I can get a fast code in F#. For this, I tried to write two methods (IsPrime1 and IsPrime2) for benchmarking. What's going on here and how I can make my code even faster?

  • Avoiding instanceof in Java

    - by Mark Lutton
    Having a chain of "instanceof" operations is considered a "code smell". The standard answer is "use polymorphism". How would I do it in this case? There are a number of subclasses of a base class; none of them are under my control. An analogous situation would be with the Java classes Integer, Double, BigDecimal etc. if (obj instanceof Integer) {NumberStuff.handle((Integer)obj);} else if (obj instanceof BigDecimal) {BigDecimalStuff.handle((BigDecimal)obj);} else if (obj instanceof Double) {DoubleStuff.handle((Double)obj);} I do have control over NumberStuff and so on. I don't want to use many lines of code where a few lines would do. (Sometimes I make a HashMap mapping Integer.class to an instance of IntegerStuff, BigDecimal.class to an instance of BigDecimalStuff etc. But today I want something simpler.) I'd like something as simple as this: public static handle(Integer num) { ... } public static handle(BigDecimal num) { ... } But Java just doesn't work that way. I'd like to use static methods when formatting. The things I'm formatting are composite, where a Thing1 can contain an array Thing2s and a Thing2 can contain an array of Thing1s. I had a problem when I implemented my formatters like this: class Thing1Formatter { private static Thing2Formatter thing2Formatter = new Thing2Formatter(); public format(Thing thing) { thing2Formatter.format(thing.innerThing2); } } class Thing2Formatter { private static Thing1Formatter thing1Formatter = new Thing1Formatter(); public format(Thing2 thing) { thing1Formatter.format(thing.innerThing1); } } Yes, I know the HashMap and a bit more code can fix that too. But the "instanceof" seems so readable and maintainable by comparison. Is there anything simple but not smelly?

  • C++ bit shifting

    Hi, I am new to working with bits & bytes in C++ and I'm looking at some previously developed code and I need some help in understanding what is going on with the code. There is a byte array and populating it with some data and I noticed that the data was being '&' with a 0x0F (Please see code snipped below). I don't really understand what is going on there....if somebody could please explain that, it would be greatly apperciated. Thanks! //Message Definition /* Byte 1: Bit(s) 3:0 = Unused; set to zero Bit(s) 7:4 = Message ID; set to 10 */ /* Byte 2: Bit(s) 3:0 = Unused; set to zero Bit(s) 7:4 = Acknowledge Message ID; set to 11 */ //Implementation BYTE Msg_Arry[2]; int Msg_Id = 10; int AckMsg_Id = 11; Msg_Arry[0] = Msg_Id & 0x0F; //MsgID & Unused Msg_Arry[1] = AckMsg_Id & 0x0F; //AckMsgID & Unused

  • Getting a Script Error Every Time I Click a Link

    - by Flip4Life
    I have everything working perfectly on my site, but for some reason, I get an error message in console whenever I click a link anywhere on my site. The error has to do with this line of coding here: jQuery(function($){ $('.navbar a, .scroll a, .smoothscroll a').bind('click',function(event){ var $anchor = $(this); $('html, body').stop().animate({ scrollTop: $($anchor.attr('href')).offset().top }, 850,'easeInOutExpo'); event.preventDefault(); }); }); And the error I am getting is this: "SCRIPT5007: Unable to get value of the property 'top': object is null or undefined custom.min.js, line 6 character 197" The exact code it is highlighting is this part of the above code: $('html, body').stop().animate({ scrollTop: $($anchor.attr('href')).offset().top }, 850,'easeInOutExpo') All I know is that when I remove the above code, my scroll-to links stop working on pages such as these: http://www.northtownsremodeling.com/things-to-know.php You can see the popup error happen and stay in the console easily by going to a page with a filter like this: http://www.northtownsremodeling.com/bathroom/ And clicking one of the filter buttons. Ultimately, I am trying to make it so my scroll-to setting still works, but not have that error come up anymore. I made this script a long time ago, and I'm really confused as to what could be causing this error when everything is functioning perfectly otherwise? Thanks!

  • Why I cannot get the output of ftp.exe ?

    - by smwikipedia
    I execute the ftp.exe cmd through a C# System.Diagnostics.Process type. And I use the following code to get the "ftp.exe" output after I programmatically enter a "help" command. But I can only get the first line of the result. And I never get to the "end" output part. The whole program seems blocked. Process p = new Process(); p.StartInfo.FileName = @"C:\Windows\System32\ftp.exe"; p.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = true; p.StartInfo.RedirectStandardInput = true; p.StartInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = true; p.StartInfo.RedirectStandardError = true; p.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = false; p.Start(); p.StandardInput.WriteLine("help"); Int32 c_int = p.StandardOutput.Read(); while (c_int != -1) { Char c = (Char)c_int; Console.Write(c); c_int = p.StandardOutput.Read(); } Console.WriteLine("end"); However, I write a simple program which only use Console.Writeline() to write some output to its StdOut stream. And I test it with the above code. It works fine. I just cannot figure out why the above code cannot work with ftp.exe? The only difference between my SimpleConsoleOutput program and the "ftp.exe" is that the ftp.exe has its own interactive command prompt.

    I've got a pretty standard call to a MySQL database and for some reason I can't get the code to work. Here's what I have: $mysqli = mysqli_connect("localhost","username","password"); if (!$mysqli) { die('Could not connect: ' . mysqli_error($mysqli)); } session_start(); $sql = "SELECT * FROM jobs ORDER BY id DESC"; $result = $mysqli->query($sql); $num_rows = mysqli_num_rows($result); Now, first, I know that it is connecting properly because I'm not getting the die method plus I added an else conditional in there previously and it checked out. Then the page displays but I get the errors: Warning: mysqli_num_rows() expects parameter 1 to be mysqli_result, boolean given in blablabla/index.php on line 11 Warning: mysqli_fetch_array() expects parameter 1 to be mysqli_result, boolean given in blablabla/index.php on line 12 I've double-checked my database and there is a table called jobs with a row of "id" (it's the primary row). The thing that confuses me is this is code that I literally copied and pasted from another site I built and for some reason the code doesn't work on this one (I obviously copy and pasted it and then just changed the table name and rows accordingly). I saw the error and tried: $num_rows = $mysqli_result->num_rows; $row_array = $mysqli_result->fetch_array; and that fixed the errors but resulted in no data being passed (because obviously $mysqli_result has no value). I don't know why the error is calling for that (is it a difference in version of MySQL or PHP from the other site)? Can someone help me track down the problem? Thanks so much. Sorry if it's something super simple that I'm overlooking, I've been at it for a while.

  • PHP form validation function

    - by Barbs
    I am currently writing some PHP form validation (I have already validated clientside) and have some repetitive code that I think would work well in a nice little PHP function. However I have having trouble getting it to work. I'm sure it's just a matter of syntax but I just can't nail it down. Any help appreciated. //Validate phone number field to ensure 8 digits, no spaces. if(0 === preg_match("/^[0-9]{8}$/",$_POST['Phone']) { $errors['Phone'] = "Incorrect format for 'Phone'"; } if(!$errors) { //Do some stuff here.... } I found that I was writing the validation code a lot and I could save some time and some lines of code by creating a function. //Validate Function function validate($regex,$index,$message) { if(0 === preg_match($regex,$_POST[$index],$message) { $errors[$index] = $message; } And call it like so.... validate("/^[0-9]{8}$/","Phone","Incorrect format for Phone"); Can anyone see why this wouldn't work? Note I have disabled the client side validation while I work on this to try to trigger the error, so the value I am sending for 'Phone' is invalid.

  • public String shorthand(String in)

    - by luvthug
    Hi All, I am stuck on this code. The code should use the class StringBuilder to build an output string by appending non-vowel characters from its argument in to the result it returns. It needs to identify vowels to be removed using the helper metod i created which is public boolean isVowel(char c). public String shorthand(String in) this is the method I need help with. I have created the stringbuilder but the if condition does not accept isVowel method. import java.io.*; import java.util.*; public class Shorthand { public boolean isVowel(char c) { if (c == 'a' || c == 'e' || c == 'i' || c == 'o' || c == 'u' || c == 'A'|| c == 'E'||c == 'I'|| c == 'O'|| c == 'U') { return true; } else { return false; } } //TODO Complete the shorthand method public String shorthand(String in) //this is the code I need help with { StringBuilder vowel = new StringBuilder(); if (isVowel() == false)strong text { vowel.append(in); } return vowel.toString(); } //TODO Complete the run method public void run() throws IOException { String yourLine; Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in); yourLine = sc.nextLine(); while(!yourLine.equals("*")); { System.out.println("Enter your line of text"); } yourLine = sc.nextLine(); } }

  • Is this the best way to grab common elements from a Hash of arrays?

    - by Hulihan Applications
    I'm trying to get a common element from a group of arrays in Ruby. Normally, you can use the & operator to compare two arrays, which returns elements that are present or common in both arrays. This is all good, except when you're trying to get common elements from more than two arrays. However, I want to get common elements from an unknown, dynamic number of arrays, which are stored in a hash. I had to resort to using the eval() method in ruby, which executes a string as actual code. Here's the function I wrote: def get_common_elements_for_hash_of_arrays(hash) # get an array of common elements contained in a hash of arrays, for every array in the hash. # ["1","2","3"] & ["2","4","5"] & ["2","5","6"] # => ["2"] # eval("[\"1\",\"2\",\"3\"] & [\"2\",\"4\",\"5\"] & [\"2\",\"5\",\"6\"]") # => ["2"] eval_string_array = Array.new # an array to store strings of Arrays, ie: "[\"2\",\"5\",\"6\"]", which we will join with & to get all common elements hash.each do |key, array| eval_string_array << array.inspect end eval_string = eval_string_array.join(" & ") # create eval string delimited with a & so we can get common values return eval(eval_string) end example_hash = {:item_0 => ["1","2","3"], :item_1 => ["2","4","5"], :item_2 => ["2","5","6"] } puts get_common_elements_for_hash_of_arrays(example_hash) # => 2 This works and is great, but I'm wondering...eval, really? Is this the best way to do it? Are there even any other ways to accomplish this(besides a recursive function, of course). If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. Otherwise, Feel free to use this code if you need to grab a common item or element from a group or hash of arrays, this code can also easily be adapted to search an array of arrays.
